Residual additives in marine microplastics and their risk assessment - A critical review

This review summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the risk assessment of plastic-associated residual additives, i.e. residual monomers, degradation products and additives, in the marine environment, also considering effects of weathering and bioavailability. Experimental studies have found a number of organic and metal additive compounds in leachates from plastics, and the analysis of weathered plastic particles, such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene particles sampled on beaches and shorelines, has identified residual additives, such as flame retardants, plasticizers, UV stabilizers and antioxidants. While the transfer of e.g. PBDEs to organisms upon ingestion has been demonstrated, studies on uptake and bioaccumulation of plastic-associated chemicals are inconclusive. Studies on hazard and risk assessments are few, and focus on monomers and/or a limited number of high concentration additives, such as phthalates and flame retardants. The risk assessment results vary between low, moderate and high risks of specific additives, and are not necessarily consistent for the same compound. Given the large number of chemicals potentially introduced into the marine environment with plastic particles and the challenges associated with the correct quantification of exposure concentrations and toxicity thresholds, the question arises whether new risk assessment concepts may be needed.

Risk assessment of added chemicals in plastics in the Danish marine environment

A risk assessment framework for direct exposure of residual additives and monomers present in ingested plastic particles, including microplastics, in the Danish marine environment, was presented. Eight cases of different polymer types and product groups were defined that represent the most significant exposures, and thus potential high-risk cases, towards marine organisms. Risk Quotients (RQ) were calculated for three trophic levels, i.e. pelagic/planktonic zooplankton: copepod, benthopelagic fish: Atlantic cod and seabird: northern fulmar. European and Danish Environmental Quality Standard (EQS) values were used as Predicted No-Effect Concentrations (PNEC). RQ larger than unity, indicating potential risks, were found for copepod and cod (pelagic community) and the flame-retardant pentabromodiphenyl ether (PeBDE) used in polyurethane (PUR), the biocide tributyltin (TBT) present as impurity in polyvinylchloride (PVC) and PUR, and the flame-retardant hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) used in expanded polystyrene (EPS). A potential risk was found for fulmar (secondary poisoning) and PeBDE used in PUR.

Dermal exposure to toluene diisocyanate and respiratory cancer risk

Human exposure to toluene diisocyanate (TDI) occurs mainly through inhalation of vapors in occupational settings where TDI is produced or used, but dermal exposure to TDI is also possible during some operations. Because of a recent epidemiology study reporting a possible association with lung cancer risk in workers with potential dermal exposure to TDI, we evaluated the evidence from epidemiological, toxicological, and toxicokinetic studies to assess whether it is likely that dermal exposure to TDI can cause human respiratory cancers. We found that the reported associations with respiratory cancers in the epidemiology studies do not support TDI as a causal factor, as there are other explanations that are more likely than causation, such as confounding by smoking and low socioeconomic status. Experimental animal and genotoxicity studies indicate that the carcinogenic potential of TDI depends on its conversion to toluene diamine (TDA), and there is no evidence of systemic availability of TDA after dermal or inhalation exposure to TDI. Also, systemic uptake of TDI is very low after dermal exposure, and any absorbed TDI is more likely to react with biomolecules on or below the skin surface than to form TDA. Even if some TDA formation occurred after dermal exposure to TDI, TDA does not induce respiratory tract tumors in experimental animals after either dermal or oral exposure. We conclude that the available evidence indicates that dermal TDI exposure does not cause respiratory cancers in humans.

Sorption of imidazolium-based ionic liquids to aquatic sediments

Ionic liquids (ILs) have received much attention as "green" alternatives to traditional solvents because they do not evaporate, eliminating concerns over fugitive emissions. However, if ionic liquids are used in industrial applications, they may enter aquatic systems via effluent, and their fate and transport may be influenced by sorption to sediments. In this study, we conducted batch mixing experiments with four alkylmethylimidizolium-based ILs and four types of aquatic sediments to asses the capacity for natural aquatic sediments to remove these chemicals from the water column. The concentration isotherms were non linear with point estimates of the distribution coefficient (K(d)) decreasing with increasing concentration. Apparent distribution coefficients ranged from 7.9 to 95.7l kg(-1) at an initial concentration of 0.5mM and were positively related to sediment organic matter (SOM) content. These K(d) values indicate that the ILs did not sorb strongly to the tested sediments. Increased alkyl chain length did not lead to increased sorption suggesting that hydrophobic interactions were not the most important sorption mechanism. We conclude that aquatic sediments have a limited capacity to sorb alkylmethylimidazolium ILs and that the transport of these contaminants in aquatic systems will not be strongly attenuated by sediments.
