Structure and Thermodynamics of Silicon Oxycarbide Polymer-Derived Ceramics with and without Mixed-Bonding

Silicon oxycarbides synthesized through a conventional polymeric route show characteristic nanodomains that consist of sp² hybridized carbon, tetrahedrally coordinated SiO_4, and tetrahedrally coordinated silicon with carbon substitution for oxygen, called “mixed bonds.” Here we synthesize two preceramic polymers possessing both phenyl substituents as unique organic groups. In one precursor, the phenyl group is directly bonded to silicon, resulting in a SiOC polymer-derived ceramic (PDC) with mixed bonding. In the other precursor, the phenyl group is bonded to the silicon through Si-O-C bridges, which results in a SiOC PDC without mixed bonding. Radial breathing-like mode bands in the Raman spectra reveal that SiOC PDCs contain carbon nanoscrolls with spiral-like rolled-up geometry and open edges at the ends of their structure. Calorimetric measurements of the heat of dissolution in a molten salt solvent show that the SiOC PDCs with mixed bonding have negative enthalpies of formation with respect to crystalline components (silicon carbide, cristobalite, and graphite) and are more thermodynamically stable than those without. The heats of formation from crystalline SiO₂, SiC, and C of SiOC PDCs without mixed bonding are close to zero and depend on the pyrolysis temperature. Solid state MAS NMR confirms the presence or absence of mixed bonding and further shows that, without mixed bonding, terminal hydroxyls are bound to some of the Si-O tetrahedra. This study indicates that mixed bonding, along with additional factors, such as the presence of terminal hydroxyl groups, contributes to the thermodynamic stability of SiOC PDCs.

High-performance of activated biocarbon based on agricultural biomass waste applied for 2,4-D herbicide removing from water: adsorption, kinetic and thermodynamic assessments

Activated biocarbons were prepared using biomass wastes: sugarcane bagasse, coconut shell and endocarp of babassu coconut; as a renewable source of low-cost raw materials and without prior treatments. These activated biocarbons were characterized by textural analysis, solid-state ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electronic microscopy. Textural analysis results revealed that those activated biocarbons were microporous, with specific surface area values of 547, 991 and 1,068 m² g^-1 from sugarcane bagasse, coconut shell and endocarp of babassu coconut, respectively. The innovation of this work was to evaluate which biomass residue was able to offer the best performance in removing 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid herbicide (2,4-D) from water by adsorption. Adsorption process of 2,4-D was investigated and the Langmuir and Redlich-Peterson models described best the adsorption process, with R² values within 0.96-0.99. The 2,4-D removal performance were 97% and 99% for the coconut and babassu biocarbons, respectively. q_M parameter values obtained from Langmuir model were 153.9, 233.0 and 235.5 mg g^-1 using sugarcane bagasse, coconut shell and endocarp of babassu, respectively. In addition, the adsorption kinetics were described nicely by the second-order model and the Gibbs free energy parameter values were negative, pointing to a spontaneous adsorption, as well.

Stable dark pulses produced by a graphite oxide saturable absorber in a fiber laser cavity

In this paper, we report for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the experimental generation of dark pulses in the 1.5 µm band from a passively $Q$Q-switched fiber laser employing graphite oxide as the saturable absorber, generating tunable microsecond pulses with kHz repetition rates. The graphite oxide samples were obtained by recycling the graphite present in Li-ion batteries used in cell phones through a chemical separation and oxidation process. Sample characterization employing x-ray diffraction, solid-state $ ^{{13}}{\rm C} $¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance, and Raman spectroscopy showed that the produced graphite oxide exhibited a homogeneously oxidized structure. Dark pulse emission could be observed at a relatively low pump threshold of 35 mW in a short 20 m laser cavity, indicating that the graphite oxide acted as a saturable absorber, significantly enhancing the nonlinearity of the laser cavity. Additionally, dark pulse operation was demonstrated at a high stability with a signal-to-noise ratio of 56 dB and a pulse-to-pulse timing jitter of 159.84 fs.
