Evolution of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory

Dr. Theodore Millon (1928-2014) was a primary architect for the personality disorders in the DSM-III, a structure that has endured into the DSM-5. His 1969 book, Modern Psychopathology, created an elegant framework into which the well-known personality prototypes could be fitted and understood. His theoretical work soon led into the creation of several psychological inventories, most notably the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI). The MCMI, now in preparation for its 4th major edition, has been a very popular instrument among clinicians. This article explores the history of the MCMI's development from its origins, through 2 distinct theoretical phases, and to its current status as the MCMI-IV is finalized.

Stability and change in dimensional ratings of personality disorders in drug abuse patients during treatment

The objective of the study was to determine the extent of change in dimensional scores of personality disorders during treatment of drug abuse patients. The drug abuse patients were monitored prospectively during treatment. Over a period of 6 years, at 3-monthly intervals, all residents in a therapeutic community for drug abuse patients were administered the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II (MCMI-II), a questionnaire developed to measure Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd ed., revised) personality disorders. Subjects who completed the MCMI-II at least at four different times were selected for this study (n = 72). Results of the study showed that treatment had resulted in significant changes in the dimensional scores of some personality disorders, whereas other dimensional scores did not change at all. Implications for treatment are discussed.

Testimony based on the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory: review, commentary, and guidelines

Test results from the MCMI have been ruled admissible in court for a variety of clinical and forensic issues. This article addresses MCMI issues such as the test's applicability and admissibility of test results in forensic evaluations, test administration, test scoring, malingering and deception, prediction and diagnosis of behavior, reliability, validity, operating characteristics and diagnostic efficiency statistics, and use of computer-assisted interpretation of test results for forensic presentation. Recommendations are suggested for dealing with each of these issues in a forensic context.

Concurrent validity of the MCMI-II modifier indices

The relationships between the three Modifier Indices (Disclosure X, Desirability Y, and Debasement Z) of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II (MCMI-II) and the validity and clinical scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) were explored. A sample of 125 psychiatric inpatients was administered both personality measures within 7 days of admission. The pattern of Pearson correlation coefficients and principal component factors was seen as generally supporting the validity of the three MCMI-II Modifier Indices. However, the Disclosure and Debasement Indices were highly intercorrelated and similar in their MMPI-2 associations. The Desirability Index functioned in a more unique manner and demonstrated both convergent and divergent relationships with MMPI-2 Validity and Clinical scales.
