Abstract
BACKGROUND A significant proportion of patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO) are antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) carriers. Relapsing disease occurs in nearly 10 % of cases and the role of aPL has not been established. The adjusted global antiphospholipid syndrome score (aGAPSS) was developed to assess the risk of clinical events in aPL carriers and its role in the management of RVO patients is unknown. OBJECTIVE To analyze the values of aGAPSS in a large cohort of patients with RVO and population-based controls, and to assess its usefulness to predict RVO relapses. METHODS Case-control study of RVO patients and population-based controls of similar age and sex. We have assessed and compared the aPL profile and the aGAPSS score in patients with and without relapsing disease and controls. RESULTS Four-hundred and seventy-two RVO patients and 346 controls were included. Fifty-seven RVO patients had antiphospholipid syndrome (RVO-APS). Of them, 75.4 % had a high-risk profile compared to 3 % in controls (p = 0.0001). The median aGAPSS values were 8 [7-13], 3 [1-4], and 3 [0-4], in RVO-APS, RVO no-APS, and controls. Nineteen patients had had a recurrence of RVO before inclusion and 8 during the follow-up. APS was more prevalent in relapsing patients. In the adjusted multivariable regression model, the best predictor for RVO recurrence during the follow-up was an aGAPSS score ≥6 (OR 5.5, CI95% 1.3-23.7; p = 0.023). CONCLUSIONS In patients with RVO, once the control of vascular risk factors has been optimized, the aGAPSS might help to identify those at risk of relapsing disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is mainly related with vascular risk factors (VRF). OBJECTIVES To analyze the lipid profile and serum folate, vitamin B12 and homocysteine levels, in patients with RVO and a population-based control group. PATIENTS AND METHODS Case-control study. Patients with RVO were assessed during an 11-year period. RESULTS We included 368 patients and 325 controls of similar age and sex. HDL cholesterol and folate levels were lower (52 [43-63] mg/dL vs. 55 [46-66]; p = 0.016 and 7 [5-10] ng/mL vs. 9 [7-13]; p < 0.0001, respectively) and non-HDL cholesterol and homocysteine levels higher (148.9 ± 37.3 mg/dL vs. 142.9 ± 34.5; p = 0.03 and 13.4 [11.2-18.2] μmol/L vs. 11.1 [9.0-14.4]; p < 0.001) in patients with RVO than controls. Although total cholesterol, LDL-C, and triglyceride levels were higher and serum vitamin B12 levels were lower in RVO patients, these differences did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS RVO-patients have lower serum HDL-C and folate levels and higher non-HDL-C and serum homocysteine levels than population-based controls of similar age and sex. In patients with RVO, apart from the lipid profile, determination of serum homocysteine, folate and vitamin B12 levels might be useful, as well as the treatment of their alterations.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Data on prevalence, association with vascular risk factors, clinical management and outcome of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) in retinal vein occlusion (RVO) are scarce. METHODS Patients diagnosed with RVO at a tertiary-care hospital, and two additional groups; population-based controls and patients with APS (RVO-APS) were studied. Prevalence, association with vascular risk factors, antiphospholipid antibody profile, clinical management, genetic thrombophilia profile, carotid ultrasound and outcome of RVO-APS patients were assessed and compared with controls. RESULTS Some 331 consecutive patients with RVO and 281 controls were included. Overall, aPLs were more prevalent in RVO-patients than in controls (33, 10% vs. 12, 4.3%; adjusted OR 2.47; 95% CI 1.25-4.88; p = 0.009). Patients with RVO-APS showed a high-risk "aPL profile" (lupus anticoagulant or triple-positive). We did not find any difference regarding classic vascular risk factors, hyperhomocysteinemia, prior vascular events, and carotid plaque, in RVO-patients with or without APS. The phenotype of RVO-APS also differed from APS. Seven patients received anticoagulation and 24 were on low-dose aspirin. After a median follow-up of 62 months, 7 patients suffered a RVO relapse (4 of them had APLs) and no RVO-APS patient had a new thrombotic or vascular event outside the retina. CONCLUSIONS aPLs were more prevalent in RVO-patients than in controls, and in all patients, APS was not associated with any connective-tissue disease. RVO in the setting of APS seems not only related to atherosclerosis, but also to the "aPL profile". In most of our RVO-patients with APS, low-dose aspirin was effective to prevent new or recurrent thrombotic events outside the retinal vessels. In these patients, we suggest that RVO could behave as an organ-specific manifestation of APS.

Abstract
Total 25(OH)D levels were determined to assess bone health in elderly populations; however, the bioavailability of 25(OH)D is regulated by the albumin and vitamin D binding protein (DBP) levels and DBP variations. Whether bioavailable 25(OH)D level is a superior biomarker for vitamin D than total 25(OH)D level regarding the BMD and the bone metabolism were not yet fully understood. With a community based cross-sectional study of 967 postmenopausal women, we found that the variant rs7041, but not rs4588, of DBP was significantly associated with the blood DBP level, which was positively correlated with the total 25(OH)D level but negatively associated with bioavailable 25(OH)D levels. Both total and bioavailable 25(OH)D levels were significantly correlated with the BMD value in postmenopausal women; however, only the bioavailable 25(OH)D level was an independent determinant of the BMD values when adjusted for age, body mass index and bone turnover biomarkers (OST and β-CTX). The bioavailable and total 25(OH)D were negatively correlated with bone formation biomarkers (OST, PINP and ALP) and PTH levels, while they were positively correlated with osteoprotegerin (OPG) level; however, the bone resorption biomarker (β-CTX) was not correlated with the 25(OH)D levels. An increment of PTH level, along with reduced bioavailable 25(OH)D levels, was evident when the bioavailable 25(OH)D level was < 5 ng/mL, which may be the optimal cutpoint for sufficient vitamin D in Chinese elderly women. The blood calcium, magnesium, ALP, TSH, FGF23, and phosphorus levels were not correlated with the total or the bioavailable 25(OH)D levels. These results suggested that high bioavailable 25(OH)D levels were correlated with reduced bone turnover processes and were a biomarker superior to total 25(OH)D for vitamin D in assessing the risks of bone-related diseases. The results indicate that the bioavailable 25(OH)D level should be determined in assessing the bone health. DBP levels and variants on DBP were associated with the total and bioavailable 25(OH)D levels in the elderly populations. Both the total and bioavailable 25(OH)D levels were correlated with the BMD in postmenopausal women. Multivariate analyses suggested that the bioavailable but not total 25(OH)D was an independent determinant for the BMD. Higher bioavailable 25(OH)D levels were correlated with reduced bone turnover and lower PTH in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential of the systemic administration of different doses of rosuvastatin (RSV) on autogenous grafted critical-sized cortical bone defects. Twenty-four rats were divided into three groups: Group C (control), Group RSV-2 and Group RSV-5. A 5-mm diameter critical-size defect was created in the calvarium of each animal. In Group C, the defect was filled by autogenous graft only and rats were given saline solution with oral gavage for 28 days. In Group RSV-2 defects were filled with autogenous graft and rats were given 2 mg/kg rosuvastatin with oral gavage for 28 days. In Group RSV-5 defects were filled with autogenous graft and rats were given 5 mg/kg rosuvastatin with oral gavage for 28 days. All animals were euthanized at 28 days postoperative. Stereologic and micro-CT analyses were performed. New bone area (NBA) and connective tissue volumes were measured. Stereologic analysis showed that Group RSV-5 and RSV-2 had significantly more new bone at 4 weeks compared with group C. Connective tissue volumes were also significantly higher in RSV applicated groups. New bone and connective tissue volumes' difference were not statistically significant between RSV groups. Micro-CT results were similar with stereologic analyses. Orally administered RSV enhances bone regeneration in critical size calvarial rat defects filled with autogenous graft furthermore possible inflammatory effect should be investigated.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study analyzes the association between serum uric acid levels and heel quantitative ultrasound (QUS) parameters in men aged 50 or more from the Camargo cohort. We found that higher serum uric acid levels are positively associated with all QUS measurements, suggesting a better bone quality in men with elevated serum uric acid values. INTRODUCTION Higher serum uric acid concentrations have been associated with higher bone mineral density and lower prevalence of fractures. However, there are no studies that have assessed the bone quality properties in Caucasians. Therefore, we have analyzed the association between quantitative ultrasound (QUS) and serum uric acid levels in adult men from a population-based cohort. METHODS A total of 868 men older than 50 were recruited from a larger cohort (Camargo Cohort) after excluding those with any known condition or drug treatment with a possible influence on bone metabolism, or those with a previous diagnosis of gout or taking hipouricemic agents. Bone turnover markers (PINP and CTX), 25OH-vitamin D and PTH levels were measured by electrochemiluminiscence. BMD was determined by DXA, and heel QUS with a gel-coupled device. RESULTS Lumbar, femoral neck and total hip BMD was significantly higher in men with higher serum uric acid levels. QUS parameters were also significantly higher in men with high uric acid levels than those with lower values, and increased continuously across quartiles after adjustment for confounding variables. In multiple regression analysis, serum uric acid was significantly associated with all QUS parameters. Finally, men with serum acid levels above median showed higher values in all the QUS parameters than men with lower values. CONCLUSIONS Higher serum uric acid levels in men older than 50 years are positively associated with QUS parameters. These data might suggest a better bone quality in men with elevated serum uric acid values.

Abstract
CONTEXT The role of endogenous vitamin D and vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphism in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is still controversial. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to investigate for the first time in women with "classic" PCOS phenotype and healthy controls the role of the serum endogenous vitamin D level and VDR gene polymorphisms in PCOS etiology. DESIGN Ninety-two women with "classic" PCOS phenotype and 85 controls from lower Silesia with comparable body mass index (BMI) were studied. In all women the waist circumference, android/gynoid fat deposit, parameters of lipid and glucose metabolism, testosterone, free androgen index, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and vitamin D were evaluated. Also, VDR gene polymorphisms rs731236, rs7975232, rs1544410 and rs10735810 were assessed. RESULTS Serum vitamin D levels in both groups were comparable. Also high, comparable frequencies of hypovitaminosis and vitamin D deficiency in both groups were observed. Women with "classic" PCOS phenotype had statistically significantly higher values of all measured parameters, except serum SHBG and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, which were lower. The frequency of VDR genotype polymorphism was also comparable in both groups. CONCLUSIONS For the first time, we show that endogenous vitamin D deficiency and VDR polymorphisms are not associated with homogeneous "classic" PCOS phenotype.
