Abstract
Organodiselenides are an important class of compounds characterized by the
presence of two adjacent covalently bonded selenium nuclei. Among them,
diaryldiselenides and their parent compound diphenyl diselenide attract continuing interest
in chemistry as well as in close disciplines like medicinal chemistry, pharmacology and
biochemistry. A search in SCOPUS database has revealed that in the last three years 105
papers have been published on the archetypal diphenyl diselenide and its use in organic
catalysis and drug tests. The reactivity of the Se-Se bond and the redox properties of selenium
make diselenides efficient catalysts for numerous organic reactions, such as Bayer-
Villiger oxidations of aldehydes/ketones, epoxidations of alkenes, oxidations of alcohols
and nitrogen containing compounds. In addition, organodiselenides might find application
as mimics of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), a family of enzymes, which, besides performing other functions,
regulate the peroxide tone in the cells and control the oxidative stress level. In this review, the essential synthetic
and reactivity aspects of organoselenides are collected and rationalized using the results of accurate
computational studies, which have been carried out mainly in the last two decades. The results obtained in
silico provide a clear explanation of the anti-oxidant activity of organodiselenides and more in general of their
ability to reduce hydroperoxides. At the same time, they are useful to gain insight into some aspects of the enzymatic
activity of the GPx, inspiring novel elements for rational catalyst and drug design.

Abstract
A new series of imidazole-5-carboxamide derivatives were prepared and tested for their anti-hyperlipidemic activity in Triton-WR-1339-induced hyperlipidemic Wistar rats. The purpose of this research was to improve benzophenone carboxamides water solubility maintaining at the same time the antihyperlipidemic activity. Compounds 4, 6, 10, and 11 were synthesized through a coupling reaction between imidazoles-5-carbonyl chloride and amino benzophenones. The tested animals (n=48) were divided into six groups: the first group (hyperlipidemic control group; HCG) received an intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) of (300 mg/kg) Triton WR-1339. The second group received i.p. injection of Triton WR-1339 followed by an intra-gastric administration of bezafibrate (100 mg/kg) (bezafibrate; BF). The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth groups received i.p. injection of Triton WR-1339 followed by an intra-gastric administration of (30 mg/kg) of compounds 4, 6, 10, and 11, respectively. At a dose of 30 mg/kg body weight compounds 4, 6, 10, and 11 significantly (p<0.0001) decreased the plasma level of triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and total cholesterol (TC) levels after 18 h of treatment. Additionally, compounds 4, 6, 11 and bezafibrate (100 mg/kg) significantly (p<0.0001) increased the plasma level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels, which is known for its preventive role against atherogenesis. These results demonstrate the possibility of pharmacokinetic properties improvement maintaining the biological and pharmacological profile of these compounds.

Abstract
Studies have shown that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients are more prone to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Zinc and selenium deficiency are common in NAFLD. But the effects of zinc and selenium co-supplementation before and/or after disease progression on CVD markers are not clear in NAFLD patients. This study aimed to compare the effects of zinc and selenium co-supplementation before and/or after disease progression on some of the CVD markers in an experimental model of NAFLD. Forty male Sprague Dawley rats (197 ± 4 g) were randomly assigned into four dietary groups: control group (C; received 9% of calorie as fat), model group (M; received 82% of calorie as fat), and supplementation before (BS) or after (AS) disease progression. Animals were fed diets for 20 weeks in all groups. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG), insulin, HOMA-IR, ALT, AST, lipid profile, malondialdehyde (MDA) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels were measured as CVD indices. Serum ALT, AST, FPG, insulin, MDA, VEGF and HOMA-IR were significantly higher in the M than C group. Co-supplementation reduced serum ALT and AST levels in the BS and AS groups compared with the M group. FPG, insulin, HOMA-IR, VEGF, MDA, LDL/HDL-c and TC/HDL-c ratio were significantly reduced in the AS compared with the M group. TG/HDL-c ratio was significantly reduced in the BS and AS compared with the M group. Serum MDA, VEGF, Insulin and HOMA-IR were significantly lowered in the AS than BS group (p < 0.05). Zinc and selenium co-supplementation after NAFLD progression reduced CVD risk indices in an experimental model.

Abstract
Selenium is an essential mineral naturally found in soil, water, and some of the food. As an antioxidant, it is one of the necessary trace elements in human body and has been suggested as a dietary supplement for health benefit. Although the human body only needs a trace amount of selenium every day, plenty of recent studies have revealed that selenium is indispensable for maintaining normal functions of metabolism. In this study, we reviewed the antioxidant role of nutritional supplementation of selenium in the management of major chronic metabolic disorders, including hyperlipidaemia, hyperglycaemia, and hyperphenylalaninemia. Clinical significance of selenium deficiency in chronic metabolic diseases was elaborated, while clinical and experimental observations of dietary supplementation of selenium in treating chronic metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, arteriosclerosis, and phenylketonuria, were summarized. Toxicity and recommended dose of selenium were discussed. The mechanism of action was also proposed via inspecting the interaction of molecular networks and predicting target protein such as xanthine dehydrogenase in various diseases. Future direction in studying the role of selenium in metabolic disorders was also highlighted. In conclusion, highlighting the beneficial role of selenium in this review would advance our knowledge of the dietary management of chronic metabolic diseases.

Abstract
Behavioral studies have suggested that (p-ClPhSe)2 elicits an anorectic-like action in rats by inducing multiple effects such as satiety-enhancing effect, malaise and specific flavor; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying its anorexigenic action remain unclarified. Here, male Sprague-Dawley rats received acute and sub-chronic intraperitoneal treatments with (p-ClPhSe)2; thereafter, in vivo and ex vivo analyses were carried out. The present study reveals that the reduction of food intake resulting from a single treatment with (p-ClPhSe)2 (1mg/kg, i.p.) was associated with decreased hypothalamic levels of pro-melanin-concentrating hormone (pro-MCH) and orexin precursor. In addition, repeated administrations of (p-ClPhSe)2 (10mg/kg; i.p.) for 7 days induced sustained food intake suppression, body weight loss and white fat reduction. Measurements of brown adipose tissue content and temperature as well as data obtained from a pair-fed group indicated that the effects of (p-ClPhSe)2 on the body weight are closely related to its anorexigenic actions, ruling out the possibility of increased thermogenesis. Furthermore, (p-ClPhSe)2 reduced the hypothalamic orexin precursor levels when repeatedly administered to rats. Sub-chronic treatment with (p-ClPhSe)2 caused a decrease of serum triglyceride levels and down-regulation of hepatic cholesterol content. Therefore, the current study characterized the anorectic and reducing body weight actions of (p-ClPhSe)2 in Sprague-Dawley rats. Besides, the set of results suggests that food intake suppressant effects triggered after (p-ClPhSe)2 administration to rats are mainly related with the lower orexin levels in hypothalamus after acute and sub-chronic treatments.

Abstract
CONTEXT Dyslipidemia is a major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases. Many dyslipidemic patients do not achieve their target lipid levels with the currently available medications, and most of them may experience many side effects. OBJECTIVE The present work aimed toward identifying a new class of novel nicotinic acid-carboxamide derivatives as promising antihyperlipidemic compounds. MATERIALS AND METHODS Six novel N-(benzoylphenyl)pyridine-3-carboxamide derivatives were synthesized using acid chloride pathways. All structures were confirmed using 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, IR, and HRMS. The evaluation of biological activity was conducted using Triton WR-1339-induced hyperlipidemic rats model. RESULTS This study revealed that some of the newly synthesized novel N-(benzoylphenyl)pyridine-3-carboxamide derivatives mainly C4 and C6 possessed significant antihyperlipidemic activities on lipid components TG and TC (p value <0.05). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION This research opens the door for new potential antihyperlipidemic compounds derived from nicotinic acid that need further optimization of their biological activities.

Abstract
The present study investigated whether a p,p'-methoxyl-diphenyl diselenide (MeOPhSe)2-supplemented diet causes toxicity in rats. A second aim of this study was to determine whether a 10 ppm (MeOPhSe)2-supplemented diet has hypolipidemic effect on Triton WR-1339-induced hyperlipidemia in rats. To rule out the antioxidant property of (MeOPhSe)2 in its hypolipidemic action, parameters of oxidative stress were carried out. Wistar rats were fed with 3, 10, or 30 ppm of (MeOPhSe)2-supplemented diet for 30 days. None of (MeOPhSe)2-supplemented diets caused alteration in general parameters of toxicity and lipid profile of rats. The hypolipidemic effect of 10 ppm of (MeOPhSe)2-supplemented diet on rats treated with Triton WR-1339 (400 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) was investigated. The (MeOPhSe)2-supplemented diet partially protected against the levels of total cholesterol (TC) and non-HDL-C and reduced the atherogenic index (AI) increased by Triton WR-1339 in rats. A positive correlation between TC and triglyceride levels (r = 0.679) and non-HDL-C levels (r = 0.929) and AI (r = 0.889) was demonstrated. Triton WR-1339 altered parameters of oxidative stress in livers of rats but (MeOPhSe)2-supplemented diet did not protect against these alterations. The results demonstrated that the hypolipidemic action of (MeOPhSe)2-supplemented diet is not directly related to its antioxidant property and devoid of systemic toxicity in rats at the parameters analyzed.

Abstract
RATIONALE The searching for safe and effective antiobesity drugs has been the subject of intense research. Previous studies have shown several pharmacological applications of organoselenium compounds; however, their possible anorectic-like actions have not been investigated. OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate the effects of (PhSe)2 and (p-ClPhSe)2 on feeding behavior of rats and their potential as weight-reducing agents. METHODS The effects of intraperitoneal administration of diselenides were investigated through the microstructural pattern of feeding behavior, behavioral satiety sequence (BSS), hypothalamic serotonin (5-HT) uptake, body weight, and epididymal fat content of male rats. RESULTS Our findings demonstrated that food intake of fasted rats was reduced by both diselenides (1 and 10 mg/kg). Diphenyl diselenide [(PhSe)2] (1 mg/kg) and p-chloro-diphenyl diselenide [(p-ClPhSe)2] (10 mg/kg) decreased the frequency, mean duration, and mean size of meals compared with the control treatment. The BSS structure was preserved when organoselenium compounds (1 mg/kg) were administered, and it was associated to a displacement to the left when the resting period started indicating a satiating action. Inhibition of 5-HT uptake in the hypothalamus (∼20 %) was also found in rats treated with low doses of (PhSe)2 and (p-ClPhSe)2 (1 mg/kg). Treatments with a high dose of both diselenides (10 mg/kg) carried out for 7 days induced weight loss and epididymal fat reduction in sated rats. CONCLUSION This study suggests that diselenides caused a satiating action in rats that could be partially explained by the inhibition of hypothalamic 5-HT uptake. These organoselenium compounds were potential weight-reducing agents when repeatedly administered.

Abstract
The present study investigated the effect of diphenyl diselenide [(PhSe)2 ] on metabolic disorders induced by acephate acute exposure in rats. We also investigated a possible mechanism of action of (PhSe)2 against hyperglycemia induced by acephate. (PhSe)2 was administered to rats at a dose of 10 or 30 mg/kg by oral gavage (p.o.) 1 hour prior to acephate administration (140 mg/kg; p.o.). Glucose and corticosterone levels as well as the lipid status were determined in plasma of rats. Cardiovascular risk factors and the atherogenic index were calculated. Glycogen levels as well as tyrosine aminotransferase (TAT) and glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase) activities were determined in livers of rats. Cerebral acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was assayed. Acephate induced an increase in glucose and corticosterone levels as well as in TAT and G6Pase activities. AChE activity was inhibited by acephate. Triglyceride (TG) levels and the cardiovascular risk factor TG/high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL) were increased by acephate. (PhSe)2 was effective against the metabolic disorders induced by acephate acute exposure in rats.

Abstract
Chrysin (5,7-dihydroxyflavone) is a flavonoid, natural component of traditional medicinal herbs, present in honey, propolis and many plant extracts. The objective of this study was to investigate the hypolipidemic properties of chrysin on Triton WR-1339-induced hyperlipidemia in female C57BL/6 mice. Triton WR-1339 was administered intraperitoneally (400 mg/kg) to overnight-fasted mice to develop acute hyperlipidemia. Chrysin was administered orally (10 mg/kg) 30 min before Triton WR-1339. At 24 h after Triton WR-1339 injection, blood samples were collected to measure plasma lipid levels. The hepatic thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), carbonyl content, non-protein sulfhydryl (NPSH) and ascorbic acid (AA) levels, as well as catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were recorded. Chrysin administration significantly decreased total cholesterol levels. In addition, it partially decreased non-high density lipoprotein-cholesterol and triglycerides levels in plasma of hyperlipidaemic mice. In addition chrysin administration prevented the increase on TBARS levels and prevented the decrease in SOD activity induced by Triton WR-1339. These findings indicated that chrysin was able to decrease plasma lipids concentration and that its antioxidant properties was, at least in part, involved in the hypolipidaemic action of chrysin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with increased oxidative stress. Certain essential trace minerals have shown to play an important role in the maintenance of redox homeostasis. We determined the concentrations of trace minerals in OSA patients and assessed their relationships to OSA severity as indicated by the apnea/ hypopnea index (AHI). METHODS We enrolled 44 patients with newly diagnosed mild to moderate OSA and 20 without OSA. The following parameters were measured: polysomnographic values of nocturnal sleep; plasma trace minerals zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and erythrocyte selenium (Se); oxidative stress status; and plasma high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). RESULTS Compared to controls matched for age, gender, and body mass index, OSA patients had lower concentrations of plasma Zn and erythrocyte Se and higher plasma concentrations of Cu and Fe. OSA patients had significantly higher plasma concentrations of hs-CRP, TNF-α, and malondialdehyde (MDA), and lower erythrocyte antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase activities. Significant differences in all the above parameters were also found in patients with moderate OSA compared to those with mild OSA. Furthermore, AHI values correlated significantly with neck circumference, GPx activity, and MDA, hs-CRP, and TNF-α concentrations in OSA patients. AHI values were also negatively associated with concentrations of plasma Zn and erythrocyte Se, but were positively linked to plasma concentrations of Fe and Cu. CONCLUSIONS Abnormal concentrations of these trace minerals may reflect oxidative damage and inflammatory response, thus increasing the severity of OSA.
