Bioadhesive interface for marine sensors on diverse soft fragile species

Marine animals equipped with sensors provide vital information for understanding their ecophysiology and collect oceanographic data on climate change and for resource management. Existing methods for attaching sensors to marine animals mostly rely on invasive physical anchors, suction cups, and rigid glues. These methods can suffer from limitations, particularly for adhering to soft fragile marine species such as squid and jellyfish, including slow complex operations, unreliable fixation, tissue trauma, and behavior changes of the animals. However, soft fragile marine species constitute a significant portion of ocean biomass (>38.3 teragrams of carbon) and global commercial fisheries. Here we introduce a soft hydrogel-based bioadhesive interface for marine sensors that can provide rapid (time <22 s), robust (interfacial toughness >160 J m-2), and non-invasive adhesion on various marine animals. Reliable and rapid adhesion enables large-scale, multi-animal sensor deployments to study biomechanics, collective behaviors, interspecific interactions, and concurrent multi-species activity. These findings provide a promising method to expand a burgeoning research field of marine bio-sensing from large marine mammals and fishes to small, soft, and fragile marine animals.

The effect of dynamic twisting on the flow field and the unsteady forces of a heaving flat plate

Many marine animals can dynamically twist their pectoral fins while swimming. The effects of such dynamic twisting on the unsteady forces on the fin and its surrounding flow field are yet to be understood in detail. In this paper, a flat plate executing a heaving maneuver is subjected to a similar dynamic twisting. In particular, the effects of the direction of twist, non-dimensional heaving amplitude, and reduced frequency are studied using a force sensor and particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. Two reduced frequencies,k=0.105, and0.209, and two twisting modes are investigated. In the first twisting mode, the plate is twisted in the direction of the heave (forward-twist), and in the second mode, the plate is twisted opposite to the direction of the heave (backward-twist). Force sensor measurements show that the forward-twist recovers some of the lift that is usually lost during the upstroke of flapping locomotion. Additionally, the forward-twist maintains a near-constant lift coefficient during the transition between downstroke and upstroke, suggesting a more stable form of locomotion. PIV results show that forward-twist limits circulation and leading-edge vortex growth during the downstroke, keepingCd≈0at the cost of the reduced lift. By contrast, backward-twist increases the circulation during the downstroke, resulting in large increases in both lift and drag coefficients. Force sensor data also showed that this effect on the lift is reversed during the upstroke, where the backward-twist causes a negative lift. The effects of each twisting mode are mainly caused by the changes in the shear layer velocity that occur as a result of twisting about the spanwise axis along the mid-chord. The twisting performed by forward-twist reduces the effective angle of attack through the upstroke and downstroke, resulting in a reduced shear layer velocity and lower circulation. The twisting performed by backward-twist does the exact opposite, increasing the effective angle of attack through the upstroke and downstroke and consequently increasing the shear layer velocity and circulation.

Multiple behaviors for turning performance of Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis)

Tuna are known for exceptional swimming speeds, which are possible because of their thunniform lift-based propulsion, large muscle mass and rigid fusiform body. A rigid body should restrict maneuverability with regard to turn radius and turn rate. To test if turning maneuvers by the Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) are constrained by rigidity, captive animals were videorecorded overhead as the animals routinely swam around a large circular tank or during feeding bouts. Turning performance was classified into three different types: (1) glide turns, where the tuna uses the caudal fin as a rudder; (2) powered turns, where the animal uses continuous near symmetrical strokes of the caudal fin through the turn; and (3) ratchet turns, where the overall global turn is completed by a series of small local turns by asymmetrical stokes of the caudal fin. Individual points of the rostrum, peduncle and tip of the caudal fin were tracked and analyzed. Frame-by-frame analysis showed that the ratchet turn had the fastest turn rate for all points with a maximum of 302 deg s-1. During the ratchet turn, the rostrum exhibited a minimum global 0.38 body length turn radius. The local turn radii were only 18.6% of the global ratchet turn. The minimum turn radii ranged from 0.4 to 1.7 body lengths. Compared with the performance of other swimmers, the increased flexion of the peduncle and tail and the mechanics of turning behaviors used by tuna overcomes any constraints to turning performance from the rigidity of the anterior body morphology.

Morphological and histochemical characterization of the pectoral fin muscle of batoids

Batoids differ from other elasmobranch fishes in that they possess dorsoventrally flattened bodies with enlarged muscled pectoral fins. Most batoids also swim using either of two modes of locomotion: undulation or oscillation of the pectoral fins. In other elasmobranchs (e.g., sharks), the main locomotory muscle is located in the axial myotome; in contrast, the main locomotory muscle in batoids is found in the enlarged pectoral fins. The pectoral fin muscles of sharks have a simple structure, confined to the base of the fin; however, little to no data are available on the more complex musculature within the pectoral fins of batoids. Understanding the types of fibers and their arrangement within the pectoral fins may elucidate how batoid fishes are able to utilize such unique swimming modes. In the present study, histochemical methods including succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) and immunofluoresence were used to determine the different fiber types comprising these muscles in three batoid species: Atlantic stingray (Dasyatis sabina), ocellate river stingray (Potamotrygon motoro) and cownose ray (Rhinoptera bonasus). All three species had muscles comprised of two muscle fiber types (slow-red and fast-white). The undulatory species, D. sabina and P. motoro, had a larger proportion of fast-white muscle fibers compared to the oscillatory species, R. bonasus. The muscle fiber sizes were similar between each species, though generally smaller compared to the axial musculature in other elasmobranch fishes. These results suggest that batoid locomotion can be distinguished using muscle fiber type proportions. Undulatory species are more benthic with fast-white fibers allowing them to contract their muscles quickly, as a possible means of escape from potential predators. Oscillatory species are pelagic and are known to migrate long distances with muscles using slow-red fibers to aid in sustained swimming.

Kinematic and hydrodynamic analyses of turning manoeuvres in penguins: body banking and wing upstroke generate centripetal force

Penguins perform lift-based swimming by flapping their wings. Previous kinematic and hydrodynamic studies have revealed the basics of wing motion and force generation in penguins. Although these studies have focused on steady forward swimming, the mechanism of turning manoeuvres is not well understood. In this study, we examined the horizontal turning of penguins via 3D motion analysis and quasi-steady hydrodynamic analysis. Free swimming of gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) at an aquarium was recorded, and body and wing kinematics were analysed. In addition, quasi-steady calculations of the forces generated by the wings were performed. Among the selected horizontal swimming manoeuvres, turning was distinguished from straight swimming by the body trajectory for each wingbeat. During the turns, the penguins maintained outward banking through a wingbeat cycle and utilized a ventral force during the upstroke as a centripetal force to turn. Within a single wingbeat during the turns, changes in the body heading and bearing also mainly occurred during the upstroke, while the subsequent downstroke accelerated the body forward. We also found contralateral differences in the wing motion, i.e. the inside wing of the turn became more elevated and pronated. Quasi-steady calculations of the wing force confirmed that the asymmetry of the wing motion contributes to the generation of the centripetal force during the upstroke and the forward force during the downstroke. The results of this study demonstrate that the hydrodynamic force of flapping wings, in conjunction with body banking, is actively involved in the mechanism of turning manoeuvres in penguins.

Snapping for high-speed and high-efficient butterfly stroke-like soft swimmer

Natural selection has tuned many flying and swimming animals to share the same narrow design space for high power efficiency, e.g., their dimensionless Strouhal numbers St that relate flapping frequency and amplitude and forward speed fall within the range of 0.2 < St < 0.4 for peak propulsive efficiency. It is rather challenging to achieve both comparably fast-speed and high-efficient soft swimmers to marine animals due to the naturally selected narrow design space and soft body compliance. Here, bioinspired by the flapping motion in swimming animals, we report leveraging snapping instabilities for soft flapping-wing swimmers with comparable high performance to biological counterparts. The lightweight, butterfly stroke-like soft swimmer (2.8 g) demonstrates a record-high speed of 3.74 body length/s (4.8 times faster than the reported fastest flapping soft swimmer), high power efficiency (0.2 < St = 0.25 < 0.4), low energy consumption cost, and high maneuverability (a high turning speed of 157°/s).

Vectored jets power arms-first and tail-first turns differently in brief squid with assistance from fins and keeled arms

Squids maneuver to capture prey, elude predators, navigate complex habitats, and deny rivals access to mates. Despite the ecological importance of this essential locomotive function, limited quantitative data on turning performance and wake dynamics of squids are available. To better understand the contribution of the jet, fins, and arms to turns, the role of orientation (i.e., arms-first vs tail-first) in maneuvering, and relationship between jet flow and turning performance, kinematic and 3D velocimetry data were collected in tandem from brief squid Lolliguncula brevis. The pulsed jet, which can be vectored to direct flows, was the primary driver of most turning behaviors, producing flows with the highest impulse magnitude and angular impulse about the main axis of the turn (yaw) and secondary axes (roll and pitch). The fins and keeled arms played subordinate but important roles in turning performance, contributing to angular impulse, stabilizing the maneuver along multiple axes, and/or reducing rotational resistance. Orientation affected turning performance and dynamics, with tail-first turns being associated with greater impulse and angular impulse, longer jet structures, higher jet velocities, and greater angular turning velocities than arms-first turns. Conversely, arms-first turns involved shorter, slower jets with less impulse, but these directed short pulses resulted in lower minimum length-specific turning radii. Although the length-to-diameter ratio (L/D) of ejected jet flow was a useful metric for characterizing vortical flow features, it, by itself, was not a reliable predictor of angular velocity or turning radii, which reflects the complexity of the squid multi-propulsor system.

Effects of Bionic Pectoral Fin Rays’ Spanwise Flexibility on Forwarding Propulsion Performance

Oscillating pectoral fins’ spanwise flexibility is a key factor influencing the forwarding propulsion performance of bionic cownose rays, including thrust and heave-pitch stability. This study explores the effects of the bionic pectoral fin ray’s spanwise flexibility on its propulsion performance via experiments. Inspired by the cownose ray, a pair of bionic pectoral fins with fin rays and fabric skin was designed, and two motors drive the controllable flapping motion. The bionic pectoral fins’ flexibility can be quantified by using fin rays’ bending stiffness. The experiments were carried out in a water tank to measure the thrust, the lift force, and the pitch moment of the bionic cownose ray. The fin rays are divided into plastic sheets of five thicknesses and three fin rays with more obvious stiffness variations. The movement parameters included the following: the flapping frequency of 0.3–0.7 Hz, the flapping amplitude of 20–40°, and the phase difference of 20–40°. The experimental results show that the stiffness of the bionic pectoral fin rays plays an important role in the thrust, lift force, and pitch moment. The fin rays with high stiffness root segment and low stiffness tip segment have lower lift and pitch moment while maintaining a high thrust. This shows that the pectoral fins’ flexible characteristics of the cownose ray are of great significance to the design of the bionic prototype.

Using Drones to Assess Volitional Swimming Kinematics of Manta Ray Behaviors in the Wild

Drones have become increasingly popular tools to study marine megafauna but are underutilized in batoid research. We used drones to collect video data of manta ray (Mobula cf. birostris) swimming and assessed behavior-specific kinematics in Kinovea, a semi-automated point-tracking software. We describe a ‘resting’ behavior of mantas making use of strong currents in man-made inlets in addition to known ‘traveling’ and ‘feeding’ behaviors. No significant differences were found between the swimming speed of traveling and feeding behaviors, although feeding mantas had a significantly higher wingbeat frequency than traveling mantas. Resting mantas swam at a significantly slower speed and wingbeat frequency, suggesting that they were continuously swimming with the minimum effort required to maintain position and buoyancy. Swimming speed and wingbeat frequency of traveling and feeding behaviors overlapped, which could point to other factors such as prey availability and a transitional behavior, influencing how manta rays swim. These baseline swimming kinematic data have valuable applications to other emerging technologies in manta ray research.

Bio-Inspired Propulsion: Towards Understanding the Role of Pectoral Fin Kinematics in Manta-like Swimming

Through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of a model manta ray body, the hydrodynamic role of manta-like bioinspired flapping is investigated. The manta ray model motion is reconstructed from synchronized high-resolution videos of manta ray swimming. Rotation angles of the model skeletal joints are altered to scale the pitching and bending, resulting in eight models with different pectoral fin pitching and bending ratios. Simulations are performed using an in-house developed immersed boundary method-based numerical solver. Pectoral fin pitching ratio (PR) is found to have significant implications in the thrust and efficiency of the manta model. This occurs due to more optimal vortex formation and shedding caused by the lower pitching ratio. Leading edge vortexes (LEVs) formed on the bottom of the fin, a characteristic of the higher PR cases, produced parasitic low pressure that hinders thrust force. Lowering the PR reduces the influence of this vortex while another LEV that forms on the top surface of the fin strengthens it. A moderately high bending ratio (BR) can slightly reduce power consumption. Finally, by combining a moderately high BR = 0.83 with PR = 0.67, further performance improvements can be made. This enhanced understanding of manta-inspired propulsive mechanics fills a gap in our understanding of the manta-like mobuliform locomotion. This motivates a new generation of manta-inspired robots that can mimic the high speed and efficiency of their biological counterpart.

Scaling of maneuvering performance in baleen whales: larger whales outperform expectations

Despite their enormous size, whales make their living as voracious predators. To catch their much smaller, more maneuverable prey, they have developed several unique locomotor strategies that require high energetic input, high mechanical power output and a surprising degree of agility. To better understand how body size affects maneuverability at the largest scale, we used bio-logging data, aerial photogrammetry and a high-throughput approach to quantify the maneuvering performance of seven species of free-swimming baleen whale. We found that as body size increases, absolute maneuvering performance decreases: larger whales use lower accelerations and perform slower pitch-changes, rolls and turns than smaller species. We also found that baleen whales exhibit positive allometry of maneuvering performance: relative to their body size, larger whales use higher accelerations, and perform faster pitch-changes, rolls and certain types of turns than smaller species. However, not all maneuvers were impacted by body size in the same way, and we found that larger whales behaviorally adjust for their decreased agility by using turns that they can perform more effectively. The positive allometry of maneuvering performance suggests that large whales have compensated for their increased body size by evolving more effective control surfaces and by preferentially selecting maneuvers that play to their strengths.

Course Control of a Manta Robot Based on Amplitude and Phase Differences

Due to external interference, such as waves, the success of underwater missions depends on the turning performance of the vehicle. Manta rays use two broad pectoral fins for propulsion, which provide better anti-interference ability and turning performance. Inspired by biological yaw modes, we use the phase difference between the pectoral fins to realize fast course adjustment and the amplitude difference to realize precise adjustment. We design a bionic robot with pectoral fins and use phase oscillators to realize rhythmic motion. An expected phase difference transition equation is introduced to realize a fast and smooth transition of the output, and the parameters are adjusted online. We combine the phase difference and amplitude difference yaw modes to realize closed-loop course control. Through course interference and adjustment experiments, it is verified that the combined mode is more effective than a single mode. Finally, a rectangular trajectory swimming experiment demonstrates continuous mobility of the robot under the combined mode.

Flexible tensegrity wing design and insights in principles of swimming kinematics of batoid rays

A novel tensegrity wing design is first proposed which can emulate the kinematic waves of the pectoral fin of batoid rays and has a simple structure for manufacture. The attitude control and the regulation of wing natural frequency are realized by wing morphing. Then analytical insights in batoid ray swimming are gained by analyzing the analytical wing (cable)-fluid interaction model, whose parameters are determined based on the biological data. The stride length (traveled distance per cycle normalized by the body length (BL)) is shown to be almost invariant among different-sized rays if the phase and amplitude of wing flexion angles remain unchanged. This result is supported by biological data, 1.5 and 1.47 respectively for the manta ray and cownose ray, though their flapping frequencies (0.15-0.45 Hz and 0.64-1.25 Hz respectively) and body sizes (1.25 m and 0.15 m respectively) are very different, and similar to the expression for the carangiform fish swimming. In other words, the swimming kinematics of two different swimming forms are described by a similar analytical equation when the body resonance is exploited. The fluid force and cable tension are both found to be proportional to the fourth power of the body size and the square of the wing flapping frequency, which may tell that the flapping frequency of the manta ray (BL = 1.25 m) is much smaller than that of the cownose ray (BL = 0.15 m) is to avoid both the large actuation tension and fluid force density due to the size increase.

Volitional Swimming Kinematics of Blacktip Sharks, Carcharhinus limbatus, in the Wild

Recent work showed that two species of hammerhead sharks operated as a double oscillating system, where frequency and amplitude differed in the anterior and posterior parts of the body. We hypothesized that a double oscillating system would be present in a large, volitionally swimming, conventionally shaped carcharhinid shark. Swimming kinematics analyses provide quantification to mechanistically examine swimming within and among species. Here, we quantify blacktip shark (Carcharhinus limbatus) volitional swimming kinematics under natural conditions to assess variation between anterior and posterior body regions and demonstrate the presence of a double oscillating system. We captured footage of 80 individual blacktips swimming in the wild using a DJI Phantom 4 Pro aerial drone. The widespread accessibility of aerial drone technology has allowed for greater observation of wild marine megafauna. We used Loggerpro motion tracking software to track five anatomical landmarks frame by frame to calculate tailbeat frequency, tailbeat amplitude, speed, and anterior/posterior variables: amplitude and frequency of the head and tail, and the body curvature measured as anterior and posterior flexion. We found significant increases in tailbeat frequency and amplitude with increasing swimming speed. Tailbeat frequency decreased and tailbeat amplitude increased as posterior flexion amplitude increased. We found significant differences between anterior and posterior amplitudes and frequencies, suggesting a double oscillating modality of wave propagation. These data support previous work that hypothesized the importance of a double oscillating system for increased sensory perception. These methods demonstrate the utility of quantifying swimming kinematics of wild animals through direct observation, with the potential to apply a biomechanical perspective to movement ecology paradigms.

A study on the hydrodynamic performance of manta ray biomimetic glider under unconstrained six-DOF motion

A manta ray biomimetic glider is designed and studied with both laboratory experiments and numerical simulations with a new dynamic update method called the motion-based zonal mesh update method (MBZMU method) to reveal its hydrodynamic performance. Regarding the experimental study, an ejection gliding experiment is conducted for qualitative verification, and a hydrostatic free-fall experiment is conducted to quantitatively verify the reliability of the corresponding numerical simulation. Regarding the numerical simulation, to reduce the trend of nose-up movement and to obtain a long lasting and stable gliding motion, a series of cases with the center of mass offset forward by different distances and different initial angles of attack have been calculated. The results show that the glider will show the optimal gliding performance when the center of mass is 20mm in front of the center of geometry and the initial attack angle range lies between A0 = -5° to A0 = -2.5° at the same time. The optimal gliding distance can reach six times its body length under these circumstances. Furthermore, the stability of the glider is explained from the perspective of Blended-Wing-Body (BWB) configuration.

The control of routine fish maneuvers: Connecting midline kinematics to turn outcomes

Maneuverability is an important factor in determining an animal's ability to navigate its environment and succeed in predator-prey interactions. Although fish are capable of a wide range of maneuvers, most of the literature has focused on escape maneuvers while less attention has been paid to routine maneuvers, such as those used for habitat navigation. The quantitative relationships between body deformations and maneuver outcomes (displacement of the center of mass and change in trajectory) are fundamental to understanding how fish control their maneuvers, yet remain unknown in routine maneuvers. We recorded high-speed video of eight giant danios (Devario aquepinnatus) performing routine and escape maneuvers and quantified the deformation of the midline, the heading of the anterior body, and the kinematics of the centroid (a proxy for center of mass). We found that both routine and escape behaviors used qualitatively similar independent body bending events, which we curvature pulses, that propagate from head to tail but show quantitative differences in midline kinematics and turn outcomes. In routine maneuvers, the direction change and acceleration of the fish are influenced by both the magnitude of the bending pulse and by the duration of the pulse, whereas in escape maneuvers, only pulse duration influenced direction change and turn acceleration. The bending pulse appears to be the smallest functional unit of a turn, and can function independently or in combination, enabling a fish to achieve a wide range of complex maneuvers.

Jellyfish and Fish Solve the Challenges of Turning Dynamics Similarly to Achieve High Maneuverability

Turning maneuvers by aquatic animals are essential for fundamental life functions such as finding food or mates while avoiding predation. However, turning requires resolution of a fundamental dilemma based in rotational mechanics: the force powering a turn (torque) is favored by an expanded body configuration that maximizes lever arm length, yet minimizing the resistance to a turn (the moment of inertia) is favored by a contracted body configuration. How do animals balance these opposing demands? Here, we directly measure instantaneous forces along the bodies of two animal models—the radially symmetric Aurelia aurita jellyfish, and the bilaterally symmetric Danio rerio zebrafish—to evaluate their turning dynamics. Both began turns with a small, rapid shift in body kinematics that preceded major axial rotation. Although small in absolute magnitude, the high fluid accelerations achieved by these initial motions generated powerful pressure gradients that maximized torque at the start of a turn. This pattern allows these animals to initially maximize torque production before major body curvature changes. Both animals then subsequently minimized the moment of inertia, and hence resistance to axial rotation, by body bending. This sequential solution provides insight into the advantages of re-arranging mass by bending during routine swimming turns.

Advantages of aquatic animals as models for bio-inspired drones over present AUV technology

Robotic systems are becoming more ubiquitous, whether on land, in the air, or in water. In the aquatic realm, aquatic drones including ROVs (remotely operated vehicles) and AUVs (autonomous underwater vehicles) have opened new opportunities to investigate the ocean depths. However, these technologies have limitations related to shipboard support, programing, and functionality in complex marine environments. A new form of AUV is being developed to become operational. These drones are based on animal designs and capabilities. Biological AUVs (BAUVs) promise to improve performance in the varied environments of the ocean. Comparison of animal swimming performance with conventional AUVs and BAUVs demonstrates that natural systems still have swimming capabilities beyond the current state of AUV technology. However, the performances of aquatic animals with respect to swimming speed, efficiency, maneuverability, and stealth can serve as benchmarks to direct the development of bio-inspired AUV technology with enhanced capabilities.

Swimming Turned on Its Head: Stability and Maneuverability of the Shrimpfish (Aeoliscus punctulatus)

The typical orientation of a neutrally buoyant fish is with the venter down and the head pointed anteriorly with a horizontally oriented body. However, various advanced teleosts will reorient the body vertically for feeding, concealment, or prehension. The shrimpfish (Aeoliscus punctulatus) maintains a vertical orientation with the head pointed downward. This posture is maintained by use of the beating fins as the position of the center of buoyancy nearly corresponds to the center of mass. The shrimpfish swims with dorsum of the body moving anteriorly. The cross-sections of the body have a fusiform design with a rounded leading edge at the dorsum and tapering trailing edge at the venter. The median fins (dorsal, caudal, anal) are positioned along the venter of the body and are beat or used as a passive rudder to effect movement of the body in concert with active movements of pectoral fins. Burst swimming and turning maneuvers by yawing were recorded at 500 frames/s. The maximum burst speed was 2.3 body lengths/s, but when measured with respect to the body orientation, the maximum speed was 14.1 body depths/s. The maximum turning rate by yawing about the longitudinal axis was 957.5 degrees/s. Such swimming performance is in line with fishes with a typical orientation. Modification of the design of the body and position of the fins allows the shrimpfish to effectively swim in the head-down orientation.

Body Flexibility Enhances Maneuverability in the World's Largest Predator

Blue whales are often characterized as highly stable, open-ocean swimmers who sacrifice maneuverability for long-distance cruising performance. However, recent studies have revealed that blue whales actually exhibit surprisingly complex underwater behaviors, yet little is known about the performance and control of these maneuvers. Here, we use multi-sensor biologgers equipped with cameras to quantify the locomotor dynamics and the movement of the control surfaces used by foraging blue whales. Our results revealed that simple maneuvers (rolls, turns, and pitch changes) are performed using distinct combinations of control and power provided by the flippers, the flukes, and bending of the body, while complex trajectories are structured by combining sequences of simple maneuvers. Furthermore, blue whales improve their turning performance by using complex banked turns to take advantage of their substantial dorso-ventral flexibility. These results illustrate the important role body flexibility plays in enhancing control and performance of maneuvers, even in the largest of animals. The use of the body to supplement the performance of the hydrodynamically active surfaces may represent a new mechanism in the control of aquatic locomotion.

Body and Pectoral Fin Kinematics During Routine Yaw Turning in Bonnethead Sharks (Sphyrna tiburo)

Maneuvering is a crucial locomotor strategy among aquatic vertebrates, common in routine swimming, feeding, and escape responses. Combinations of whole body and fin movements generate an imbalance of forces resulting in deviation from an initial path. Sharks have elongate bodies that bend substantially and, in combination with pectoral fin rotation, play a role in yaw (horizontal) turning, but previous studies focus primarily on maximal turning performance rather than routine maneuvers. Routine maneuvering is largely understudied in fish swimming, despite observations that moderate maneuvering is much more common than the extreme behaviors commonly described in the literature. In this study, we target routine maneuvering in the bonnethead shark, Sphyrna tiburo. We use video reconstruction of moving morphology to describe three-dimensional pectoral fin rotation about three axes to compare to those previously described on yaw turning by the Pacific spiny dogfish. We quantify kinematic variables to understand the impacts of body and fin movements on routine turning performance. We also describe the anatomy of bonnethead pectoral fins and use muscle stimulation to confirm functional hypotheses about their role in actuating the fin. The turning performance metrics we describe for bonnethead sharks are comparable to other routine maneuvers described for the Pacific spiny dogfish and manta rays. These turns were substantially less agile and maneuverable than previously documented for other sharks, which we hypothesize results from the comparison of routine turning to maneuvering under stimulated conditions. We suggest that these results highlight the importance of considering routine maneuvering in future studies. Three-dimensional movements of the pectoral fin during yaw turns in the Pacific spiny dogfish, Squalus suckleyi

Fish pectoral fins move in complex ways, acting as control surfaces to affect force balance during swimming and maneuvering. Though objectively less dynamic than their actinopterygian relatives, shark pectoral fins undergo complex conformational changes and movements during maneuvering. Asynchronous pectoral fin movement is documented during yaw turning in at least two shark species but the three-dimensional (3D) rotation of the fin about the body axes is unknown. We quantify the 3D actuation of the pectoral fin base relative to the body axes. We hypothesized that Pacific spiny dogfish rotate pectoral fins with three degrees of freedom relative to the body during volitional turning. The pectoral fin on the inside of the turn is consistently protracted, supinated and depressed. Additionally, turning angular velocity increased with increasing fin rotation. Estimated drag on the fin increased and the shark decelerated during turning. Based on these findings, we propose that Pacific spiny dogfish uses drag-based turning during volitional swimming. Post-mortem muscle stimulation revealed depression, protraction and supination of the pectoral fin through stimulation of the ventral and cranial pterygoideus muscles. These data confirm functional hypotheses about pectoral fin musculature and suggest that Pacific spiny dogfish actively rotate pectoral fins to facilitate drag-based turning.This article has an associated First Person interview with the first author of the paper.
