Abstract
BACKGROUND Liver transplantation (LT) for nonresectable colorectal liver metastasis (NRCRLM) has become accepted for select patients meeting strict inclusion criteria. Advancements in patient selection and understanding of cancer biology may expand benefits to patients with colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM). In this meta-analysis, we sought to assess survival outcomes, recurrence patterns, and quality of life (QoL) after LT for CRLM. METHODS PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases were searched. A random-effect meta-analysis was conducted to obtain pooled overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) rates and to compare QoL from baseline. Continuous data were analyzed, and standardized mean differences were reported. RESULTS Overall, 16 studies (403 patients, 58.8% male sex) were included. The pooled 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS after LT for NRCRLM was 96% (95% CI: 92%-99%), 77% (95% CI: 62%-89%), and 53% (95% CI: 45%-61%), respectively. Moreover, the pooled 1-, 3-, and 5-year DFS was 58% (95% CI: 43%-72%), 33% (95% CI: 9%-61%), and 13% (95% CI: 4%-27%), respectively. Overall, 201 patients (49.8%) experienced recurrence during the follow-up period with the lungs being the most common site (45.8%). There was no significant differences in physical and emotional functioning, fatigue, and pain components of QoL at 6 months after LT compared with baseline (all P > .05). CONCLUSION LT for NRCRLM demonstrated good OS outcomes with no differences in the QoL at 6 months after transplantation. Transplantation may represent a viable treatment option for NRCRLM.

Abstract
Transplant oncology is a relatively new field in which transplantation is used to treat patients who would otherwise be unresectable. New anticancer treatment paradigms using tumor and transplant immunology and cancer immunogenomics are emerging. In turn, liver transplantation (LT) has become a potential therapy for certain patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) with liver metastasis, hepatocellular (HCC), cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), and metastatic neuroendocrine tumor (NET) of the liver. Although there are established criteria for LT in HCC, evidence regarding LT as a treatment modality for certain gastrointestinal malignancies is still debated. The aim of this review is to highlight updates in the role of LT for certain malignancies, including HCC, metastatic CRC, hilar CCA, and neuroendocrine tumor (NET), as well as contextualize LT use and discuss controversies in transplant oncology.

Abstract
Background Previous studies have shown that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a key role in cancer, including colon cancer (CC). However, the exact role of long noncoding RNA 01124 (LINC01124) in CC and its mechanisms of action remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the functional effects and the possible mechanism of LINC01124 in CC. Methods We first determined the expression of LINC01124 in CC tissues (The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database) and cell lines (quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR)). Functional analysis via Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), colony formation, cell cycle, wound healing and Transwell assays were performed, and a mechanistic experiment was performed with the western blotting. The function of LINC01124 was also determined in vivo using nude BALB/c mice. Results The results showed that LINC01124 was upregulated in CC tissues and cell lines. Functional studies showed that knockdown of LINC01124 significantly suppressed the proliferation, migration, and invasion of colon cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Subsequent mechanistic experiments indicated that LINC01124 acted as a sponge to suppress microRNA 654-5p, which targeted HAX-1. Downregulation of LINC01124 decreased the expression of HAX-1, and overexpression of the miR-654-5p inhibitor attenuated the sh-LINC01124-induced inhibition of CC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Conclusion Collectively, this study revealed that the knockdown of LINC01124 inhibited the malignant behaviors of CC via the miR-654-5p/HAX-1 axis, suggesting that LINC01124 might be a therapeutic target for CC treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Liver metastases (LM) occur in about 50% of patients with colorectal cancer. Besides the multimodal treatment of the primary tumor, the only way to cure patients with colorectal LM (CRLM) is complete resection. Different surgical procedures for this purpose are available depending on location, size, and number of LM. Additional concepts for patients with primary unresectable LM exist, ranging from Chemotherapy to induction of liver hypertrophy and even liver transplantation. This review intends to provide an overview of the surgical approach. SUMMARY Surgical options in the treatment of CRLM are defined and limited by their intraparenchymal location and their proximity to major vessels and intrahepatic bile ducts. Lesions located in the periphery can be excised in a parenchymal sparing fashion with a small tumor-surrounding resection margin of healthy liver parenchyma. If this is not possible, anatomical resections based on segmental boundaries are performed. In these cases, a sufficient functional volume of liver parenchyma after resection (future liver remnant volume [FLRV]) has to be preserved. This FLRV depends on various factors such as bodyweight and possible preexisting liver damage, such as cirrhosis, fibrosis, or chemotherapy-induced liver impairment. Liver hypertrophy via partial occlusion of the portal venous system is a standard procedure for patients with primary unresectable LM to increase FLRV. Furthermore, discussion of liver transplantation in cases of unresectable LM is gaining importance again. A combination of surgery and adjuvant and/or neoadjuvant chemotherapy may be indicated in individual cases, but general evidence-based recommendations cannot be given without further studies. KEY MESSAGES Surgical removal of all metastases represents the only option of a potentially curative treatment of UICC stage IV colorectal carcinoma with liver involvement. An interdisciplinary approach consisting of chemotherapeutical downsizing and hypertrophy of the FLRV offers potential curative treatment for patients with initially unresectable metastases. For all others, liver transplantation is seeing a revival showing promising results in overall survival compared to chemotherapy alone.

Abstract
It is estimated that 50% of patients with colorectal cancer will develop liver metastasis. Surgical resection significantly improves survival and provides a chance of cure for patients with colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM). Increasing the resectability of primary unresectable liver metastasis provides more survival benefit for those patients. Considerable surgical innovations have been made to increase the resection rate and decrease the potential risk of hepatic failure postoperation. Liver transplantation (LT) has been explored as a potential curative treatment for unresectable CRLM. However, candidate selection criteria, chemotherapy strategies, refined immunity regimens and resolution for the shortage of grafts are lacking. This manuscript discusses views on surgical indication, peritransplantation anti-tumor and anti-immunity therapy and updated advances in LT for unresectable CRLM. A literature review of published articles and registered clinical trials in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Clinicaltrials.gov was performed to identify studies related to LT for CRLM. Some research topics were identified, including indications for LT for CRLM, oncological risk, antitumor regimens, graft loss, administration of anti-immunity drugs and solutions for graft deficiency. The main candidate selection criteria are good patient performance, good tumor biological behavior and chemosensitivity. Chemotherapy should be administered before transplantation but is not commonly administered posttransplantation for preventive purposes. Mammalian target of rapamycin regimens are recommended for their potential oncological benefit, although there are limited cases. In addition to extended criterion grafts, living donor grafts and small grafts combined with two-stage hepatectomy are efficient means to resolve organ deficiency. LT has been proven to be an effective treatment for selected patients with liver-only CRLM. Due to limited donor grafts, high cost and poorly clarified oncological risks, LT for unresectable CRLM should be strictly performed under a well-organized study plan in selected patients. Some vital factors, like LT indication and anti-tumor and anti-immune treatment, remain to be confirmed. Ongoing clinical trials are expected to delineate these topics.

Abstract
Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) serve a key role in different types of cancer, including colorectal cancer (CRC). The exact roles and mechanisms underlying lncRNA00963 [long intergenic non‑protein coding RNA 963 (LINC00963)] in CRC are not completely understood. The present study aimed to identify the effects and mechanisms underlying LINC00963 in CRC. Firstly, the LINC00963 expression was detected using reverse transcription‑quantitative PCR and the results demonstrated that LINC00963 expression levels were significantly increased in CRC tissues and cell lines compared with healthy tissues and HpoEpiC cells, respectively. Online database analysis indicated that high levels of LINC00963 were associated with low survival rates. The results of functional experiments, such as CCK‑8 assay, colony formation assay, wound healing assay and Transwell invasion assay, indicated that LINC00963 knockdown significantly inhibited CRC cell proliferation, colony formation, migration and invasion compared with the small interfering RNA (si)‑negative control (NC) group. Furthermore, the luciferase reporter indicated that LINC00963 competitively regulated microRNA (miR)‑10b by targeting fibroblast growth factor 13 (FGF13). Compared with si‑NC, LINC00963 knockdown decreased the expression levels of FGF13, vimentin and N‑cadherin, and increased the expression of E‑cadherin as detecting by western blotting. miR‑10b inhibitors partly attenuated si‑LINC00963‑induced inhibition of CRC cell proliferation, migration and invasion. Collectively, the results of the present study suggested a potential role of the LINC00963/miR-10b/FGF13 axis in the tumorigenesis and progression of CRC, indicating a novel lncRNA-based diagnostic or therapeutic target for CRC.

Purpose of Review
Accumulating evidence suggest that selected patients with nonresectable liver only metastases from colorectal cancer can be offered liver transplantation with acceptable outcome. This review provides an update on the scientific literature.
Recent Findings
The SECA-I study showed an estimated 5-year survival of 60% in a heterogenous patient population and guided the development of the first clinical selection criteria. In the sequel SECA-II trial, an estimated 5-year survival of 83% was obtained. A recent study shows that an Oslo score of 0–2, a metabolic tumor volume below 70 cm3 on PET-CT or Fong score of 0–2 at time of listing, can stratify patients with superior survival. Recurrence is common, but about 70% are slow-growing lung metastases, whereof the majority are resectable.
Summary
Liver transplantation for colorectal liver metastasis is an option in highly selected patients. Futile use of grafts can be avoided by applying stringent selection criteria.

Abstract
In contrast to donor factors predicting outcomes of liver transplantation (LT), few suitable recipient parameters have been identified. To this end, we performed an in-depth analysis of hospitalization status and duration prior to LT as a potential risk factor for posttransplant outcome. The pretransplant hospitalization status of all patients undergoing LT between 2005 and 2016 at the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin was analyzed retrospectively using propensity score matching. At the time of organ acceptance, 226 of 1134 (19.9%) recipients were hospitalized in an intensive care unit (ICU), 146 (12.9%) in a regular ward (RW) and 762 patients (67.2%) were at home. Hospitalized patients (RW and ICU) compared with patients from home showed a dramatically shorter 3-month survival (78.7% versus 94.4%), 1-year survival (66.3% versus 87.3%), and 3-year survival (61.7% versus 81.7%; all P < 0.001), whereas no significant difference was detected for 3-year survival between ICU and RW patients (61.5% versus 62.3%; P = 0.60). These results remained significant after propensity score matching. Furthermore, in ICU patients, but not in RW patients, survival correlated with days spent in the ICU before LT (1-year survival: 1-6 versus 7-14 days: 73.7% versus 60.5%, P = 0.04; 7-14 days versus >14 days, 60.5% versus 51.0%, P = 0.006). In conclusion, hospitalization status before transplantation is a valuable predictor of patient survival following LT.

Abstract
Patients with nonresectable colorectal cancer receiving palliative chemotherapy have a 5-year overall survival rate of about 10%. Liver transplant provided a Kaplan-Meier-estimated 5-year overall survival of up to 83%. The objective of the study was to evaluate the ability of different scoring systems to predict long-term overall survival after liver transplant. Patients with colorectal cancer with nonresectable liver-only metastases determined by computed tomography (CT)/magnetic resonance imaging/positron emission tomography (PET)-CT scans from 2 prospective studies (SECA-I and -II) were included. All included patients had previously received chemotherapy. PET-CT was performed within 90 days of the liver transplant. Overall survival, disease-free survival, and survival after relapse based on the Fong Clinical Risk Score, total PET liver uptake (metabolic tumor volume), and Oslo Score were compared. At median follow-up of 85 months for live patients, Kaplan-Meier overall survival rates at 5 years were 100%, 78%, and 67% in patients with Fong Clinical Risk Score 0 to 2, metabolic tumor volume-low group, and Oslo Score 0 to 2, respectively. Median overall survival was 101, 68, and 65 months in patients with Fong Clinical Risk Score 0 to 2, metabolic tumor volume-low, and Oslo Score 0 to 2. These selection criteria may be used to obtain 5-year overall survival rates comparable to other indications for liver transplant.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous dismal clinical studies have stated that colorectal cancer with unresectable liver metastases is an absolute contraindication for liver transplantation (LT). During recent decades, it has been shown that patients with colorectal cancer with liver metastasis benefited from LT, but 100% recurrence was inevitable in progressive colorectal cancer with liver metastasis. CASE PRESENTATION A 61-year-old man was found at the first visit to be suffering from unresectable liver metastases of colorectal cancer. This patient underwent colorectal radical surgery and palliative treatment after the operation. During a 2-year follow-up, we found that CEA and CA199 rebounded sharply to high levels, and liver metastasis lesions increased significantly, so we made the decision to perform LT 2 years after the first surgery. Chemotherapy and sirolimus were given post-LT. Slow-growing pulmonary metastases after transplantation were found 4 months post-LT. This patient survived the next 4 months tumor-free and by now has survived 34 months free of liver tumors. Here, we review the literature on LT for progressive liver metastasis of colorectal cancer and summarize our experience from this successful case. CONCLUSION This case provides vital evidence that LT is an option and can provide curative therapy for patients with advanced unresectable liver metastasis. Careful selection of patients, postoperative comprehensive treatments, and rational application of immunosuppressive agents are vital factors for favorable prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND During the last decades, deceased-donor liver transplantation (DDLT) has gained a place in the therapeutic algorithm of well-selected patients harbouring non-resectable secondary liver tumors. Living-donor LT (LDLT) might represent a valuable means to further expand this indication for LT. METHODS Between 1985 and 2016, twenty-two adults were transplanted because of neuroendocrine (n = 18, 82%) and colorectal metastases (n = 4, 18%); 50% received DDLT and 50% LDLT. In LDLT, 4 (36%) right and 7 (64%) left grafts were used; the median graft-to-recipient-weight ratios (GRWR) were 1.03% (IQR 0.86%-1.30%) and 0.59% (IQR 0.51%-0.91%), respectively. Median post-LT follow-up was 64 months (IQR 17-107) in the DDLT group and 40 months (IQR 35-116) in the LDLT group. DDLT and LDLT recipients were compared in terms of overall survival, graft survival, postoperative complications and recurrence. RESULTS The 1- and 5-year actuarial patient survivals were 82% and 55% after DDLT, 100% and 100% after LDLT, respectively (P < 0.01). One- and 5-year actuarial graft survivals were 73% and 36% after DDLT, 91% and 91% after LDLT (P < 0.01). The outcomes of right or left LDLT were comparable. Donor hepatectomy proved safe, and one donor experienced a Clavien IIIb complication. Bilirubin peak was significantly lower after left hepatectomy compared with that after right hepatectomy [1.3 (IQR 1.2-2.2) vs. 3.3 (IQR 2.3-5.2) mg/dL; P = 0.02]. CONCLUSIONS The more recent LDLT series compared favorably to our DDLT series in the treatment of secondary liver malignancies. The absence of portal hypertension and the use of smaller left grafts make recipient and donor surgeries safe. The safety of the procedures and lack of interference with the scarce allograft pool are expected to lead to a more frequent use of LDLT in the field of transplant oncology.

Abstract
Liver transplantation (LT) has become the standard of care for selected primary and secondary malignancies. Considered a contra-indication to transplantation until recently, unresectable colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) have gained interest since the publication of the SECA trial by the University of Oslo. It showed a 5-year overall survival of 60%, comparable to the one of standard transplant indication. This report generated multiple questions about the place of LT for CRLM and gave raise to several trials aiming at answering them. The present review is exploring this topic, defining the current state of the field, and extrapolating the future milestones.

Abstract
Accumulated studies have strongly implicated aberrantly expressed microRNAs (miRNAs) in carcinogenesis and cancer progression of various cancers, including colorectal cancer (CRC). Hence, a comprehensive study of miRNAs and their association with CRC may be a promising therapeutic method for patients with this malignancy. MicroRNA-744 (miR-744) is abnormally expressed in several types of human cancer. Thus far, little is known about the expression, biological roles, and exact mechanisms of miR-744 in CRC. Thus, the present study measured the expression level of miR-744 and investigated its roles and associated molecular mechanisms in CRC. This study demonstrated that miR-744 expression was significantly underexpressed in CRC tissues and cell lines. Low miR-744 expression was positively associated with lymphatic metastasis and TNM stage. Functional experiments revealed that miR-744 overexpression obviously inhibited the proliferation and invasion of CRC cells. Furthermore, Notch1 was identified as a direct target of miR-744 in CRC. Moreover, the inhibition of Notch1 phenocopied the inhibitory effects of miR-744 overexpression on CRC cells. Restored Notch1 expression markedly rescued the tumor-suppressive effects of miR-744 overexpression on CRC cells. Overall, miR-744 exhibits an essential role in CRC progression, and the miR-744/Notch1 axis may provide novel insights into future treatments for patients with CRC.

Abstract
Liver resection is the only potentially curative treatment option in patients with liver metastases from colorectal cancer, but only about 20% of the patients are resectable. Liver transplantation of patients with unresectable liver metastases was attempted in the early era but it was abandoned due to poor survival. During the last decade, several case reports, a controlled pilot study, and a retrospective cohort study indicated that prolonged disease-free survival and overall survival can be obtained in a proportion of these patients. Strict selection criteria have not yet been well defined, but tumor load, response to chemotherapy, pretransplant carcinoembryonic antigen level, and time interval from resection of the primary tumor to transplant are all factors related to outcome. Carefully selected patients may obtain 5-year overall survival that approaches conventional indications for liver transplant. The scarcity of liver grafts is a significant problem, but this can possibly to some extent be addressed by use of extended criteria grafts and novel surgical techniques. There is an increasing interest in liver transplantation in these patients in the transplant community, and currently 4 clinical trials are active and are recruiting.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common type of diagnosed cancer and the fourth leading cause of cancer‑associated mortalities worldwide. Increasing studies have demonstrated that the deregulation of microRNAs (miRNAs or miRs) is associated with the occurrence and development of multiple types of human cancer, including CRC. miR‑329 has been identified to be downregulated in various types of cancer; however, its expression pattern, functions and mechanisms in CRC remain unclear. The present study demonstrated that miR‑329 was lowly expressed in CRC tissue samples and cell lines. Low expression of miR‑329 was correlated with tumor‑node‑metastasis stage and lymph node metastasis in patients with CRC. In vitro experiments revealed that resumption expression of miR‑329 suppressed cell proliferation and invasion in CRC. Furthermore, the results of the present study indicated that miR‑329 targets transforming growth factor‑β1 (TGF‑β1) directly in vitro. TGF‑β1 was demonstrated to be upregulated in CRC tissue samples and inversely correlated with miR‑329 expression. Upregulation of TGF‑β1 was able to partially counteract the antitumor roles of miR‑329 on CRC cell proliferation and invasion. The results of the current study revealed that miR‑329 suppresses CRC cell proliferation and invasion through targeting TGF‑β1, thus suggesting that targeting miR‑329/TGF‑β1 may provide a novel effective therapeutic approach for the treatment of patients with CRC.

Abstract
Blastocyst complementation refers to the injection of cells into a blastocyst. The technology allows for the creation of chimeric animals, which have the potential to be used as an unlimited source of organ donors. Pluripotent stem cells could be generated from a patient in need of a transplantation and injected into a large animal blastocyst (potentially of a pig), leading to the creation of organ(s) allowing immunosuppression-free transplantation. Various chimera combinations have already been generated, but one of the most recent steps leads to the creation of human-pig chimeras, which could be studied at an embryo stage. Although still far from clinical reality, the potential application is almost unlimited. The present review illustrates the historical steps of intra- and interspecific blastocyst complementation in rodents and large animals, specifically looking at its potential for generation of organ grafts. We also speculate on how it could change transplant indications, on its economic impact, and on the linked ethical concerns.

Abstract
Background
Although transplant benefit appears superior for patients with advanced hepatocellular cancer (HCC), liver transplantation remains limited to selected low-risk HCC patients to keep their outcomes similar to heterogeneous group of non-HCC patients. The purpose of this study was to assess the rationale for current policy of restricting access to liver transplantation to minority of HCC patients based on utility principle. Methods This retrospective cohort study comprised 1246 liver transplant recipients, including 206 HCC and 1040 non-HCC patients. Patient survival was the primary outcome measure. Patients with HCC and benign diseases were divided into low-, moderate-, and high-risk subgroups basing on independent risk factors for disease-free survival and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score (<30, 30–40, >40), respectively. Results MELD (p < 0.001) and presence of HCC (p = 0.008) were independent risk factors for early and late mortality, respectively. Total tumor volume (p = 0.008) and alpha-fetoprotein (p = 0.013) were independent predictors of recurrence and mortality used for division of HCC patients into low-, moderate-, and high-risk subgroups, with disease-free survival rates of 74.9% (5 years), 51.7% (5 years), and 8.0% (3 years), respectively (p < 0.001). There were no differences in 5-year overall survival between low-risk HCC (74.9%) and non-HCC (81.9%) patients (p = 0.210), moderate-risk HCC (63.3%) and non-HCC (68.0%) patients (p = 0.372), and high-risk HCC (55.0%) and non-HCC (56.0%) patients (p = 0.559). Conclusions The principle of utility is unequally applied for restriction of access to liver transplantation for HCC patients. The results provide rationale for discussion on reinitiation of liver transplantation for advanced HCCs. Abstract
The use of liver transplantation (LT) for liver metastases attempted in the early 1990's was associated with poor perioperative outcomes and unacceptably low overall survival. Recently, there has been renewed interest in LT as a treatment option for colorectal liver metastases (CLM) in countries where organ supply is high. To date, no meticulous analysis about the efficacy, safety and outcomes of LT in CLM patients has been published. We present the first systematic review on the subject.

Abstract
Studies have shown that homeobox D10 (HOXD10) is the target gene of microRNA-10b (miR-10b) and is closely associated with the inhibition of cell migration and invasion. Ras homolog family member C (RhoC) has been reported to promote tumor metastasis in various types of cancer. The effect of miR-10b on colorectal cancer (CRC) metastasis and the associated molecular mechanisms remain elusive. The present study aimed to investigate whether miR-10b could promote invasion by targeting HOXD10 in CRC by exploring the association between miR-10b and HOXD10 expression in CRC patients. The findings revealed that miR-10b levels were elevated in the CRC specimens and significantly correlated with advanced clinical stage and lymph node metastasis. In addition, HOXD10 was a direct target of miR-10b, and the increased expression of RhoC and downregulation of HOXD10 correlated with the increased expression level of miR-10b. HOXD10 protein level was also markedly attenuated in lymph node metastasis-positive tumor tissues compared with lymph node metastasis-free tumor tissues. These findings suggest that miR-10b may stimulate the upregulation of RhoC through targeting HOXD10, thus promoting the invasion and migration in CRC tumor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) can offer long-term survival to patients with resectable peritoneal metastasis (PM) from colorectal cancer (CRC), a condition with otherwise dismal prognosis. This study describes short- and long-term outcome in a national patient cohort and aims to identify prognostic factors. METHODS All patients treated with CRS-HIPEC for non-appendiceal PM-CRC in Norway 2004-2013 were included (n = 119), and outcome and potential prognostic factors were examined using survival- and ROC-curve analysis. RESULTS Five-year overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were 36% and 14%, respectively, with 45 months median follow-up. The only factor associated with OS in multivariable analysis was peritoneal cancer index (PCI), with HR 1.05 (1.01-1.09) for every increase in PCI-score (P = 0.015). Peritoneal relapse was associated with shorter OS than distant metastasis (P = 0.002). ROC-curves identified PCI > 12 as a marker with 100% specificity for prediction of disease relapse. Severe postoperative complications (Clavien-Dindo ≥ 3) occurred in 15% of patients and there was no 100-day mortality. CONCLUSIONS Long-term outcome was in line with published results, morbidity was acceptable and there was no 100-day mortality. The results reemphasize CRS-HIPEC as an important treatment option in PM-CRC, with particularly good results in patients with PCI < 12. J. Surg. Abstract
Surgical resection is the only curative modality for colorectal liver metastases (CLM) and 5-year overall survival after resection is about 40%. Nonresectable CLM is not curable and 5-year overall survival is currently about 10%. Before 1995, several liver transplantations for CLMs were performed, but outcome was poor (5-year survival rate: 18%). Liver transplantation for CLMs was abandoned and CLMs were even considered a contraindication to the procedure. Since then, the survival rate after liver transplantation in general has improved by almost 30%. In a prospective pilot study of liver transplantation for nonresectable CLM, a 5-year overall survival rate of 60% was demonstrated, however 19 of 21 patients experienced recurrence of disease. Here, current knowledge and ongoing research in this field is reviewed, and the potential role for liver transplantation as one of several treatment modalities for CLM discussed.
