Selective monooxygenation of diphosphenes with molecular oxygen

The O2 splitting mediated by the bulky Rind-based diphosphenes resulted in the clean formation of the mixed-valent diphosphorus compounds, diphosphene oxides, with P2O moieties. Their structural features and electronic properties have been clearly characterized by experimental and theoretical methods.

Weakly Bound Dimer of a Diaryloxygermylene Derived from a tBuPh2Si-Substituted 2,2′-Methylenediphenol

Novel diaryloxygermylenes have been prepared by the reaction of Lappert’s germylene, Ge[N(SiMe3)2]2, with 2,2′-methylenediphenols bearing different substituents. The bulkiness of the substituents on the ortho positions of the phenolic oxygen (6 and 6′ positions) affects the structure of the products both in the solid-state and in solution. When the ortho substituents are SitBuPh2, the diaryloxygemylene crystalizes as a weakly bound dimer with intermolecular Ge…O distances of ca. 3.0 Å and exists as a monomer in solution. In contrast, the germylene with SiMePh2 groups as the ortho substituents form a tightly bound dimer featuring a Ge2O2 rhombus with cis-oriented terminal aryloxy groups in the crystalline state, which is confirmed to be maintained in solution through the VT (variable-temperature)-1H NMR studies. To the best of our knowledge, the former dimeric structure is unprecedented in the family of dioxytetrylenes.

Muonium Addition to a peri-Trifluoromethylated 9-Phosphaanthracene Producing a High-Energy Paramagnetic π-Conjugated Fused Heterocycle

In this communication, we report muon spin rotation/resonance (μSR) studies for understanding radical reactivity of 10-mesityl-1,8-bis(trifluoromethyl)-9-phosphaanthracene. Transverse-field muon spin rotation (TF-μSR) and muon avoided level-crossing resonance (μLCR) measurements successfully visualized a paramagnetic species produced by regioselective addition of muonium (Mu) to the skeletal phosphorus atom. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the P-muoniation product suggested two possible isomers. Whereas the most stable isomer including the envelope-type phosphorus heterocycle shows considerably different hyperfine coupling constants (hfcs) from those of the TF-μSR and μLCR, the metastable structure accompanying the almost planar tricyclic π-conjugated skeleton could simulate the experimentally determined hfcs. The metastable planar π-conjugated paramagnetic tricyclic-fused skeleton is promoted by the larger zero-point energy due to the light muon (μ⁺ ), one ninth of the proton mass.

Long-lived localised singlet diradicaloids with carbon-carbon π-single bonding (C-π-C)

Localised singlet cyclopentane-1,3-diyl diradicaloids have been considered promising candidates for constructing carbon-carbon π-single bonds (C-π-C). However, the high reactivity during formation of the σ-bond has limited a deeper investigation of its unique chemical properties. In this feature article, recent progress in kinetic stabilisation based on the "stretch effect" and the "solvent dynamic effect" induced by the macrocyclic system is summarised. Singlet diradicaloids S-DR4a/b and S-DR4d containing macrocyclic rings showed much longer lifetimes at 293 K (14 μs for S-DR4a and 156 μs for S-DR4b in benzene) compared to the parent singlet diradicaloid S-DR2 having no macrocyclic ring (209 ns in benzene). Furthermore, the dynamic solvent effect in viscous solvents was observed for the first time in intramolecular σ-bond formation, the lifetime of S-DR4d increased to 400 μs in the viscous solvent glycerin triacetin at 293 K. The experimental results proved the validity of the "stretch effect" and the "solvent dynamic effect" on the kinetic stabilisation of singlet cyclopentane-1,3-diyl diradicaloids, and provided a strategy for isolating the carbon-carbon π-single bonded species (C-π-C), and towards a deeper understanding of the nature of chemical bonding.

Synthesis and structures of diaryloxystannylenes and -plumbylenes embedded in 1,3-diethers of thiacalix[4]arene

New types of diaryloxystannylenes and -plumbylenes have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Lappert's diaminostannylene and -plumbylene E[N(SiMe3)2]2 (E = Sn, Pb) react with 1,3-diethers of tetrathiacalix[4]arene bearing benzyl or SiiPr3 groups to give the corresponding diaryloxystannylenes and -plumbylenes embedded in thiacalix[4]arene, respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that these tetrylenes exist as monomers in the solid-state. The structure of the thiacalix[4]arene scaffold is highly dependent on the substituents on the phenolic oxygen atoms. The benzyl derivatives adopt apparently C2-symmetric structures with a strong intramolecular SnOBn coordination, whereas the SiiPr3 derivatives have a distorted thiacalix[4]arene skeleton with relatively weak intramolecular EOSiiPr3 and ES interactions. On the basis of the 119Sn{1H} and 207Pb NMR studies in solution, the tin and lead atoms in the benzyl derivatives are strongly coordinated by the ethereal oxygen atoms, whereas those in the SiiPr3 derivatives are weakly coordinated by the bridging sulfur atoms or ethereal oxygen atoms. The tetrylene complexes of thiacalix[4]arene presented here do not show any isomerization in a temperature range from 20 to 110 °C, which is in sharp contrast to the fact that related diaryloxygermylenes and -stannylenes embedded in calix[4]arene underwent isomerization under heating conditions. This difference could be attributable to the ring size of thiacalix[4]arene larger than that of calix[4]arene.

Synthesis of a copper-supported triplet nitrene complex pertinent to copper-catalyzed amination

Terminal copper-nitrenoid complexes have inspired interest in their fundamental bonding structures as well as their putative intermediacy in catalytic nitrene-transfer reactions. Here, we report that aryl azides react with a copper(I) dinitrogen complex bearing a sterically encumbered dipyrrin ligand to produce terminal copper nitrene complexes with near-linear, short copper-nitrenoid bonds [1.745(2) to 1.759(2) angstroms]. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and quantum chemistry calculations reveal a predominantly triplet nitrene adduct bound to copper(I), as opposed to copper(II) or copper(III) assignments, indicating the absence of a copper-nitrogen multiple-bond character. Employing electron-deficient aryl azides renders the copper nitrene species competent for alkane amination and alkene aziridination, lending further credence to the intermediacy of this species in proposed nitrene-transfer mechanisms.

Cu(i) complex bearing a PNP-pincer-type phosphaalkene ligand with a bulky fused-ring Eind group: properties and applications to FLP-type bond activation and catalytic CO2 reduction

Herein, we report the synthesis of [Cu(Eind2-BPEP)][PF6] (2) (Eind2-BPEP = 2,6-bis(2-Eind-2-phosphaethenyl)pyridine, Eind = 1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7-octaethyl-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydro-s-indacen-4-yl), a three-coordinated Cu(i) complex bearing a PNP-pincer-type phosphaalkene ligand with bulky fused-ring Eind groups. The Gutmann-Beckett test revealed that complex 2 is highly Lewis acidic and comparable in strength to B(C6F5)3, which is a relatively strong Lewis acid. In addition, 2 is more Lewis acidic than [Cu(Mes*2-BPEP)][PF6] (3), the analogous complex with less-bulky Mes* instead of Eind groups. DFT calculations using model compounds revealed that the higher Lewis acidity of 2 compared to 3 is not due to the electronic effects of the ligand, but due to a reduction in the LUMO energy caused by the steric effect of the bulky Eind groups. When combined with a tertiary amine, the highly Lewis acidic and bulky 2 exhibits the reactivity of a frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) and can activate hydrogen and phenylacetylene. Complexes 2 and 3 were found to catalyze the hydrogenation and hydrosilylation of CO2 in the presence of DBU under relatively mild conditions.

Linking Low-Coordinate Ge(II) Centers via Bridging Anionic N-Heterocyclic Olefin Ligands

We introduce a large-scale synthesis of a sterically encumbered N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO) and illustrate the ability of its deprotonated form to act as an anionic four-electron bridging ligand. The resulting multicenter donating ability has been used to link two low oxidation state Ge(II) centers in close proximity, leading to bridging Ge-Cl-Ge and Ge-H-Ge bonding environments supported by Ge₂C₂ heterocyclic manifolds. Reduction of a dimeric [RGeCl]₂ species (R = anionic NHO, [(MeCNDipp)₂C═CH]^-; Dipp = 2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃) did not give the expected acyclic RGeGeR analogue of an alkyne, but rather ligand migration/disproportionation transpired to yield the known diorganogermylene R₂Ge and Ge metal. This process was examined computationally, and the ability of the reported anionic NHO to undergo atom migration chemistry contrasts with what is typically found with bulky monoanionic ligands (such as terphenyl ligands).

Incomplete Electrocyclization of a Sterically Hindered 1,4-Diphosphabutadiene

Butadiene is the simplest neutral acyclic closed-shell π-conjugated system and is typically sufficiently stable enough to avoid electrocyclization to cyclobutene. In contrast, most congeners of butadiene containing heavier elements are easily converted into the corresponding 4-membered cyclobutene system. Herein, we demonstrate that the gauche 1,4-diphosphabutadiene (P=C-C=P) skeleton in a sterically encumbered 2,3-bis(phosphanylidene)-1,4-disilinane can be remarkably perturbed due to "incomplete electrocyclization" where P=C-C=P partially form the corresponding 1,2-dihydrodiphosphete (3,4-diphosphacyclobutene) by [2+2] electrocyclization. ³¹ P NMR data obtained in solution indicated that the coexistence of a closed ring substantially reduces the open-ring characteristics of the P=C-C=P moiety. However, the ³¹ P CP-MAS spectrum of 2,3-bis(phosphanylidene)-1,4-disilinane showed that the P=C-C=P structure is predominant in the solid-state. Single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed that decreasing the temperature promoted the generation of small amounts of incomplete 1,2-dihydrodiphosphete system in the crystalline state. Furthermore, the 1,2-dihydrodiphosphete units disappeared upon warming the single crystal, and this unique solid-state electrocyclization reaction was reversible.

A stable free tetragermacyclobutadiene incorporating fused-ring bulky EMind groups

The first free cyclobutadiene (CBD) germanium analogue was obtained as room-temperature stable dark red crystals via the reaction of the bulky EMind-substituted 1,2-dichlorodigermene with lithium naphthalenide. The cyclic 4π-electron antiaromaticity is essentially stabilized by the polar Jahn-Teller distortion in the germanium CBD producing a planar rhombic-shaped charge-separated structure.

π-Electron systems containing Si=Si double bonds

Sterically large substituents can provide kinetic stabilization to various types of low-coordinate compounds. For example, regarding the chemistry of the group 14 elements, since West et al. introduced the concept of kinetic protection of the otherwise highly reactive Si=Si double bond by bulky mesityl (2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) groups in 1981, a number of unsaturated compounds of silicon and its group homologs have been successfully isolated by steric effects using the appropriate large substituents. However, the functions and applications of the Si-Si π-bonds consisting of the 3pπ electrons on the formally sp2-hybridized silicon atoms have rarely been explored until 10 years ago, when Scheschkewitz and Tamao independently reported the model systems of the oligo(p-phenylenedisilenylene)s (Si-OPVs) in 2007. This review focuses on the recent advances in the chemistry of π-electron systems containing Si=Si double bonds, mainly published in the last decade. The synthesis, characterization, and potential application of a variety of donor-free π-conjugated disilene compounds are described.

1,2-Dihalodigermenes bearing bulky Eind groups: synthesis, characterization, and conversion to halogermylenoids

Cleavage of a P=P Double Bond Mediated by N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

The reaction of the bulky diphosphenes (Rind)P=P(Rind) (1; Rind=1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7-octa-R-substituted s-hydrindacen-4-yl) with two molecules of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC; 1,3,4,5-tetramethylimidazol-2-ylidene) resulted in the quantitative formation of the NHC-bound phosphinidenes NHC→P(Rind) (2), along with the cleavage of the P=P double bond. The reaction times are dependent on the steric size of the Rind groups (11 days for 2 a (R=Et) and 2 h for 2 b (R=Et, Me) at room temperature). The mechanism for the double bond-breaking is proposed to proceed via the formation of the NHC-coordinated, highly polarized diphospehenes 3 as an intermediate. Approach of a second NHC to 3 induces P-P bond cleavage and P-C bond formation, which proceeds through a transition state with a large negative Gibbs energy change to afford the two molecules of 2, thus being the rate-determining step of the overall reaction with the activation barriers of 80.4 for 2 a and 29.1 kJ mol^-1 for 2 b.

Solid surface vs. liquid surface: nanoarchitectonics, molecular machines, and DNA origami

Comparisons of science and technology between these solid and liquid surfaces would be a good navigation for current-to-future developments.

A Square-Planar Complex of Platinum(0)

The Pt⁰ complex [Pt(PPh₃ )(Eind₂ -BPEP)] with a pyridine-based PNP-pincer-type phosphaalkene ligand (Eind₂ -BPEP) has a highly planar geometry around Pt with ∑(Pt)=358.6°. This coordination geometry is very uncommon for formal d¹⁰ complexes, and the Pd and Ni homologues with the same ligands adopt distorted tetrahedral geometries. DFT calculations reveal that both the Pt and Pd complexes are M⁰ species with nearly ten valence electrons on the metals whereas their atomic orbital occupancies are evidently different from one another. The Pt complex has a higher occupancy of the atomic 6s orbital because of strong s-d hybridization due to relativistic effects, thereby adopting a highly planar geometry reflecting the shape and orientation of the partially unoccupied dx2-y2 orbital.

Activation of Dihydrogen by Masked Doubly Bonded Aluminum Species

Activation of dihydrogen by masked dialumenes (Al=Al doubly bonded species) is reported. Reactions of barrelene-type dialumanes, which have the reactivity as masked equivalents of 1,2-diaryldialumenes ArAl=AlAr, with H2 afforded dihydroalumanes ArAlH2 at room temperature (Ar: bulky aryl groups). These dihydroalumanes form hydrogen-bridged dimers [ArHAl(μ-H)]2 in the crystalline state, while a monomer-dimer equilibrium was suggested in solution. The 1,2-diaryldialumenes generated from the barrelene-type dialumanes are the putative active species in the cleavage of H2 .

Synthesis and Structural Characterization of Lithium and Titanium Complexes Bearing a Bulky Aryloxide Ligand Based on a Rigid Fused-Ring s-Hydrindacene Skeleton

The bulky aryl alcohols, (Rind)OH (1) [Rind = EMind (a) and Eind (b)], based on the rigid fused-ring 1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7-octa-R-substituted s-hydrindacene skeleton were prepared by the reaction of (Rind)Li with nitrobenzene followed by protonation. The treatment of 1 with (n)BuLi affords the lithium aryloxide dimers [(Rind)OLi(THF)]2 (2) or trimers [(Rind)OLi]3 (3), depending on the employed solvents (THF = tetrahydrofuran). The salt metathesis reaction of [(EMind)OLi(THF)]2 (2a) with TiCl4(THF)2 leads to the formation of the mononuclear diamagnetic mono- and bis(aryloxide) Ti(IV) complexes, [(EMind)O]TiCl3(THF) (4a) and [(EMind)O]2TiCl2 (5a). We also isolated a trace amount of the tris(aryloxide) Ti(IV) complex, [(EMind)O]3TiCl (6a). The reaction between 2a and TiCl3(THF)3 resulted in the isolation of the mononuclear paramagnetic mono- and bis(aryloxide) Ti(III) complexes, [(EMind)O]TiCl2(THF)2 (7a) and [(EMind)O]2TiCl(THF)2 (8a). The discrete monomeric structures of the titanium complexes 4a, 5a, 6a, 7a, and 8a were determined by X-ray crystallography.

Coplanar Oligo(p-phenylenedisilenylene)s as Si═Si Analogues of Oligo(p-phenylenevinylene)s: Evidence for Extended π-Conjugation through the Carbon and Silicon π-Frameworks

A series of oligo(p-phenylenedisilenylene)s (Si-OPVs 1-4), silicon analogues of oligo(p-phenylenevinylene)s, up to the tetramer have been synthesized and isolated by the introduction of a newly developed protecting group [(HexO)MEind] for improving their solubility. The experimental and theoretical studies of the Si-OPVs 1-4 demonstrate the fully extended π-conjugation of the Si-OPV main chains. Single crystal X-ray analyses of the monomer 1 and the dimer 2 revealed the highly coplanar Si-OPV backbones facilitating the effective extension of the π-conjugation, which has further been validated by the significant increases in the absorption maxima from 465 nm for the monomer 1 to 610 nm for the tetramer 4. The absorption maxima exhibit an excellent fit to Meier's equation, leading to the estimation of an effective conjugation length (ECL) of 9 repeat units (nECL = 9) and the absorption maximum of 635 nm for the infinite chain (λ∞ = 635 nm). In sharp contrast to other nonemissive disilenes, the Si-OPVs 2-4 show an intense fluorescence from 613 to 668 nm at room temperature with the quantum yields up to 0.48. All the data presented here provide the first evidence for the efficient extended π-conjugation between the Si═Si double bonds and the carbon π-electron systems over the entire Si-OPV skeleton. This study reveals the possibility for developing the conjugated disilene π-systems, in which the Si═Si double bonds would be promising building blocks, significantly optimizing the intrinsic photophysical and electrochemical properties of the carbon-based π-conjugated materials.
