Heptagonal Molecular Tiling via Self-Assembly of Heptagonal Phenylene-Ethynylene Macrocycle at the Liquid-Solid Interface

The molecular-level scrutinization of on-surface tiling garners considerable interest among scientists. Herein, we demonstrate molecular-level heptagonal tiling using the self-assembly of a heptagonal meta-phenylene-ethynylene macrocycle featuring 14 long alkoxy substituents at the liquid-graphite interface using scanning tunneling microscopy. This heptagonal macrocycle produces an antiparallel pattern at the 1-phenyloctane-graphite interface through van der Waals interactions between the alkoxy chains. This pattern resembles the densely packed pattern of heptagonal tiles, albeit with variations in the orientations and spacing of heptagonal cores owing to intermolecular interactions between the alkoxy chains. Conversely, at the 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene-graphite interface, the heptagonal molecule forms an oblique pattern composed of four independent molecular orientations. This phenomenon arises from core distortion induced by the coadsorption of the solvent molecules within the intrinsic macrocyclic pores. This study elucidates the design strategy - specifically, the choice of heptagonal molecular building block - for heptagonal tiling and fills a crucial gap in the field of two-dimensional crystal engineering.

Formation of Supramolecular Heterostacks at the Liquid-Solid Interface: Impact of Symmetry Mismatching on Structural Growth

The construction of intricate three-dimensional (3D) nanoarchitectures on surfaces through molecular self-assembly attracts attention not only from a crystal engineering viewpoint but also because of its potential in a range of applications, given the current interest in van der Waals heterostructures. We herein report the formation of porous structures on alkane buffer layers on graphite. A dehydrobenzo[12]annulene (DBA) derivative having six decyloxy chains forms hexagonal structures on n-pentacontane and n-hexacontane buffer layers through van der Waals interactions at the 1-octanoic acid/graphite interface. The structural features are very similar to those on the graphite surface, except for the slight structural distortion, which is attributed to the p2 symmetry of the buffer layer underneath. Moreover, based on the observation of small clusters of the DBA molecules, we discussed the nucleation and structural growth of the DBA network on a buffer layer. Finally, a hierarchical multicomponent structure was formed through the coadsorption of a heteromolecular cluster formed by a hydrogen-bonded isophthalic acid cyclic hexamer hosting a coronene molecule on the buffer layer. This study on supramolecular heterostacks provides insights into the construction of intricate 3D nanoarchitectures using self-assembly at interfaces.

Two-dimensional molecular networks at the solid/liquid interface and the role of alkyl chains in their building blocks

Nanoarchitectonics has attracted increasing attention owing to its potential applications in nanomachines, nanoelectronics, catalysis, and nanopatterning, which can contribute to overcoming global problems related to energy and environment, among others. However, the fabrication of ordered nanoarchitectures remains a challenge, even in two dimensions. Therefore, a deeper understanding of the self-assembly processes and substantial factors for building ordered structures is critical for tailoring flexible and desirable nanoarchitectures. Scanning tunneling microscopy is a powerful tool for revealing the molecular conformations, arrangements, and orientations of two-dimensional (2D) networks on surfaces. The fabrication of 2D assemblies involves non-covalent interactions that play a significant role in the molecular arrangement and orientation. Among the non-covalent interactions, dispersion interactions that derive from alkyl chain units are believed to be weak. However, alkyl chains play an important role in the adsorption onto substrates, as well as in the in-plane intermolecular interactions. In this review, we focus on the role of alkyl chains in the formation of ordered 2D assemblies at the solid/liquid interface. The alkyl chain effects on the 2D assemblies are introduced together with examples documented in the past decades.

Thermally Stable Array of Discrete C60s on a Two-Dimensional Crystalline Adlayer of Macrocycles both in Vacuo and under Ambient Pressure

A periodic monolayer array of discrete C₆₀s was generated on an atomically flat Au(111) surface with the aid of a template adlayer. The template was a two-dimensional (2D) array of molecular pits prepared on an Au(111) surface through 2D crystallization of shape-persistent macrocycles composed of four carbazole and four salphens/Ni-salphens with a 1 nm hollow. Scanning tunneling microscopy imaging under ultra-high vacuum revealed that the square-shaped macrocycles, with 1.5 nm sides, were arranged with a periodic spacing of approximately 4.0 nm on the Au(111) surface, where the orientation and periodicity of the macrocycles were dependent on their chemical structures. After sublimation of C₆₀s onto the adlayer, a single C₆₀ molecule was entrapped in each pit, and an ordered molecular array of C₆₀s was attained with a pattern similar to that of the macrocycles. The periodic pattern of C₆₀s on the surface was thermally stable up to approximately 200 °C, even under ambient pressure. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy suggested the existence of an electronic interaction between the C₆₀s and the Au(111) surface that was influenced by the macrocycle template on the surface.

Biasing the Hierarchy Motifs of Nanotoroids: from 1D Nanotubes to 2D Porous Networks

Hierarchical organization of self-assembled structures into superstructures is omnipresent in Nature but has been rarely achieved in synthetic molecular assembly due to the absence of clear structural rules. We herein report on the self-assembly of scissor-shaped azobenzene dyads which form discrete nanotoroids that further organize into 2D porous networks. The steric demand of the peripheral aliphatic units diminishes the trend of the azobenzene dyad to constitute stackable nanotoroids in solution, thus affording isolated (unstackable) nanotoroids upon cooling. Upon drying, these nanotoroids organize at graphite surface to form well-defined 2D porous networks. The photoirradiation with UV and visible light enabled reversible dissociation and reconstruction of nanotoroids through the efficient trans↔cis isomerization of azobenzene moieties in solution.

Revisiting Dehydrothiopheno[12]annulenes: Synthesis, Electronic Properties, and Aromaticity

The aromaticity and electronic properties of acetylene-bridged hexadehydrotristhiopheno[12]annulenes (HDTAs) were revisited using a combined experimental and theoretical approach. Moreover, we attempted the synthesis of the butadiyne-bridged octadehydrobisthiopheno[12]annulenes (ODTAs). While the formation of ODTAs was indicated by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and UV-vis absorption measurements, our attempts to isolate ODTAs were unsuccessful on account of its instability. Instead, their structure and energetic properties were predicted using DFT calculations. HDTA isomers in which the position where the thiophene rings are fused to the 12-membered ring differs (b- vs c-position) show distinct differences in their HOMO-LUMO energy gaps (E_Gap). ODTAs also show large E_Gap differences depending on the fusion position of the thiophene rings. The diene character of the thiophene ring significantly changes the electronic properties; i.e., E_Gap differences of >1 eV were observed between the isomers of both HDTAs and ODTAs. A theoretical evaluation of HDTAs and ODTAs revealed significant variation in the local aromaticity/antiaromaticity between the b- and c-isomers. The antiaromatic character of the 12-membered ring is attenuated for the b-isomers, whereas it is decreased substantially for the c-isomers. The results of this study are useful for a detailed understanding of the fundamental aspects of dehydrothiopheno[12]annulenes.

Fluorescent molecular glass based on hexadehydrotribenzo[12]annulene

We prepared octylbenzoate-substituted [12]DBA (C8[12]DBA) as an organic molecular glass material. Even with a central large, planar π unit of [12]DBA, which is generally advantageous for the formation of a crystalline/liquid crystalline state, this compound formed a thermally stable glass state due to its small intermolecular π contact between [12]DBA units and twisted geometries around the terminal benzoate units. C8[12]DBA showed a unique dielectric anomaly and isolated fluorescence properties in the glass state.

Chirality in porous self-assembled monolayer networks at liquid/solid interfaces: induction, reversion, recognition and transfer

Chirality in two dimensions (2D) has attracted increasing attention with regard to interesting fundamental aspects as well as potential applications. This article reports several aspects of supramolecular chirality control as exemplified by self-assembled monolayer networks (SAMNs) formed by a class of chiral building blocks consisting of a triangular conjugated core and alkoxy chains on the periphery. It highlights 2D chirality induction phenomena through a classic "sergeants-and-soldiers" mechanism, in which the inducer is incorporated into a network component, as well as through a "supramolecular host-guest" mechanism, in which the inducer is entrapped in the porous space, leading to counterintuitive chirality reversal. Stereochemical control can be extended to three dimensions too, based on interlayer hydrogen bonding of the same class of building blocks bearing hydroxy groups, exhibiting diastereospecific bilayer formation at both single molecule level and supramolecular level arising from orientation between the top and bottom layers. Finally, we showcase that homochiral SAMNs can also be used as templates for the grafting of in situ generated aryl radicals, by covalent bond formation to the basal graphitic surface, thereby yielding topologically chiral functionalized graphite, and thus extending the potential of chiral SAMNs.

Over one century after discovery: pyrylium salt chemistry emerging as a powerful approach for the construction of complex macrocycles and metallo-supramolecules

Over one century after its discovery, pyrylium salt chemistry has been extensively applied in preparing light emitters, photocatalysts, and sensitizers. In most of these studies, pyrylium salts acted as versatile precursors for the preparation of small molecules (such as furan, pyridines, phosphines, pyridinium salts, thiopyryliums and betaine dyes) and poly(pyridinium salt)s. In recent decades, pyrylium salt chemistry has emerged as a powerful approach for constructing complex macrocycles and metallo-supramolecules. In this perspective, we attempt to summarize the representative efforts of synthesizing and self-assembling large, complex architectures using pyrylium salt chemistry. We believe that this perspective not only highlights the recent achievements in pyrylium salt chemistry, but also inspires us to revisit this chemistry to design and construct macrocycles and metallo-supramolecules with increasing complexity and desired function.

Dynamic host-guest behavior in halogen-bonded two-dimensional molecular networks investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy at the solid/liquid interface

The fabrication of supramolecularly engineered two-dimensional (2D) networks using simple molecular building blocks is an effective means for studying host-guest chemistry at surfaces toward the potential application of such systems in nanoelectronics and molecular devices. In this study, halogen-bonded molecular networks were constructed by the combination of linear halogen-bond donor and acceptor ligands, and their 2D structures at the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite/1-phenyloctane interface were studied by scanning tunneling microscopy. The bi-component blend of the molecular building blocks possessing tetradecyloxy chains formed a lozenge structure via halogen bonding. Upon the introduction of an appropriate guest molecule (e.g., coronene) into the system, the 2D structure transformed into a hexagonal array, and the central pore of this array was occupied by the guest molecules. Remarkably, the halogen bonding of the original structure was maintained after the introduction of the guest molecule. Thus, the halogen-bonded molecular networks are applicable for assembling guest species on the substrate without the requirement of the conventional rigid molecular building blocks with C 3 symmetry.

Combining Soft- and Hard-Templating Approaches in MWW-Type Zeolites

A combination of hard-templating (HT) and soft-templating (ST) approaches was studied to obtain MWW-type materials with intermediate physicochemical properties. The HT methodology involved the introduction of carbon particles as hard templates during gel synthesis to obtain a layered zeolitic precursor (LZP) with particles possessing a microspherical morphology. The LZP obtained was treated with surfactants as soft templates to expand the layers of the LZP, followed by a pillaring procedure. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, elemental analysis and N₂ adsorption. The results demonstrate that the obtained material possesses intermediate properties from both approaches, with interparticle mesopores/macropores and pore sizes between 18 and 46 Å. However, the ST procedure causes a partial disruption of some microspheres, forming small crystallite aggregates, and results in a decrease in the number of interparticle mesopores/macropores previously formed by the HT method. All synthesized solids presented catalytic activity, which was evaluated by the cracking of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as a probe reaction.

Trapping a pentagonal molecule in a self-assembled molecular network: an alkoxylated isosceles triangular molecule does the job

We herein report a unique example of on-surface adaptive self-assembly. A pentagon-shaped macrocycle, cyclic [5]meta-phenyleneacetylene [5]CMPA, is trapped by the adaptive supramolecular network formed by an isosceles triangular molecule, alkoxy substituted dehydrobenzo[14]annulene [14]ISODBA at the liquid/graphite interface, leading to a highly ordered and large-area bicomponent self-assembled molecular network (SAMN), as revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).

Stereospecific Epitaxial Growth of Bilayered Porous Molecular Networks

Stereocontrolled multilayer growth of supramolecular porous networks at the interface between graphite and a solution was investigated. For this study, we designed a chiral dehydrobenzo[12]annulene (DBA) building block bearing alkoxy chains substituted at the 2 position with hydroxy groups, which enable van der Waals stabilization in a layer and potential hydrogen-bonding interactions between the layers. Bias voltage-dependent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments revealed the diastereospecificity of the bilayer with respect to both the intrinsic chirality of the building blocks and the supramolecular chirality of the self-assembled networks. Top and bottom layers within the same crystalline domain were composed of the same enantiomers but displayed opposite supramolecular chiralities.

Hierarchically Chiral Lattice Self-Assembly Induced Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Biomaterials in nature often exhibit hierarchical chiral structures with an intriguing mechanism involving hierarchical chirality transfer from molecular to supramolecular and the nano- or microscale level. To mimic the cross-level chirality transfer, we present here one kind of host-guest complex system built of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and fluorescent dyes, which show multilevel chirality, including molecular chirality of β-CD, induced supramolecular chirality of β-CD/SDS host-guest complexes, a chiral lattice self-assembled nanosheet, mesoscopic chirality of an assembled helical tube, induced chirality of a dye-doped chiral tube. The hierarchical chirality involved a chiral lattice self-assembly process, which can be identified by small-angle X-ray scattering, optical studies, circular dichroism, and circularly polarized luminescence spectral measurements. Benefiting from the chiral lattice self-assembly, intense circularly polarized luminescence was observed from the achiral dye-doped complexes with a large dissymmetry factor up to +0.1. This work thus provides a feasible insight for developing hierarchical chiroptical materials based on the lattice self-assembly.

Engineering Long-Range Order in Supramolecular Assemblies on Surfaces: The Paramount Role of Internal Double Bonds in Discrete Long-Chain Naphthalenediimides

Achieving long-range order with surface-supported supramolecular assemblies is one of the pressing challenges in the prospering field of non-covalent surface functionalization. Having access to defect-free on-surface molecular assemblies will pave the way for various nanotechnology applications. Here we report the synthesis of two libraries of naphthalenediimides (NDIs) symmetrically functionalized with long aliphatic chains (C₂₈ and C₃₃) and their self-assembly at the 1-phenyloctane/highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (1-PO/HOPG) interface. The two NDI libraries differ by the presence/absence of an internal double bond in each aliphatic chain (unsaturated and saturated compounds, respectively). All molecules assemble into lamellar arrangements, with the NDI cores lying flat and forming 1D rows on the surface, while the carbon chains separate the 1D rows from each other. Importantly, the presence of the unsaturation plays a dominant role in the arrangement of the aliphatic chains, as it exclusively favors interdigitation. The fully saturated tails, instead, self-assemble into a combination of either interdigitated or non-interdigitated diagonal arrangements. This difference in packing is spectacularly amplified at the whole surface level and results in almost defect-free self-assembled monolayers for the unsaturated compounds. In contrast, the monolayers of the saturated counterparts are globally disordered, even though they locally preserve the lamellar arrangements. The experimental observations are supported by computational studies and are rationalized in terms of stronger van der Waals interactions in the case of the unsaturated compounds. Our investigation reveals the paramount role played by internal double bonds on the self-assembly of discrete large molecules at the liquid/solid interface.

A Chiral Bis-Naphthylated Tetrandrine Dibromide: Synthesis, Self-Assembly into an Organic Framework Based On Nanosized Spherical Cages, and Inclusion Studies

Crystalline framework materials have gained interest because of their many potential applications. A novel chiral tetrandrine salt (DNT) has been synthesized and characterized by conventional analytical techniques and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, and its self-assembly behavior studied. In the solid state, 48 molecules of the compound self-assemble into an organic framework based on nanospherical aggregates formed exclusively through weak noncovalent interactions. Additionally, it was demonstrated by UV-vis spectroscopy and TGA that assembled DNT can include the Nile Red dye, giving a fluorescent material. To the best of our knowledge, these spherical assemblies are the largest among the purely synthetic organic self-assembled molecular crystals reported to date.

Aerobic Cu-catalyzed oxidative 1 : 2 coupling of benzynes with terminal alkynes

One-shot preparation of topologically chimeric nanofibers via a gradient supramolecular copolymerization

Supramolecular polymers have emerged in the last decade as highly accessible polymeric nanomaterials. An important step toward finely designed nanomaterials with versatile functions, such as those of natural proteins, is intricate topological control over their main chains. Herein, we report the facile one-shot preparation of supramolecular copolymers involving segregated secondary structures. By cooling non-polar solutions containing two monomers that individually afford helically folded and linearly extended secondary structures, we obtain unique nanofibers with coexisting distinct secondary structures. A spectroscopic analysis of the formation process of such topologically chimeric fibers reveals that the monomer composition varies gradually during the polymerization due to the formation of heteromeric hydrogen-bonded intermediates. We further demonstrate the folding of these chimeric fibers by light-induced deformation of the linearly extended segments.

2D Co-crystallization of molecular homologues promoted by size complementarity of the alkyl chains at the liquid/solid interface

Co-crystallization of organic molecules is an important strategy for the fabrication of molecular materials. In this contribution, we investigated the mixing behavior of 5-(benzyloxy)-isophthalic acid homologues (BIC-Cn, n = 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14) at the liquid/solid interface using a scanning tunneling microscope. Deposition of the single component of BIC-Cn always results in typical honeycomb networks, whereas co-deposition of two BIC-Cn homologues leads to hybrid double-walled honeycomb networks or phase separation depending on the difference in the length of their alkyl chains. 2D co-crystallization can only be realized for BIC-C6/BIC-C10 or BIC-C8/BIC-C12 which have a four-methyl unit difference in their alkyl chains. The size complementarity of the alkyl chains in the two components suggests that it is responsible for the 2D co-crystallization, though hydrogen bonding contributes a lot both to the pristine honeycomb network and to the hybrid co-crystal. This result is of importance for understanding the role of van der Waals interaction and its interplay with hydrogen bonding in 2D co-crystallization.

Not always what closes best opens better: mesoporous nanoparticles capped with organic gates

Four types of calcined MCM-41 silica nanoparticles, loaded with dyes and capped with different gating ensembles are prepared and characterized. N1 and N2 nanoparticles are loaded with rhodamine 6G and capped with bulky poly(ethylene glycol) derivatives bearing ester groups (1 and 2). N3-N4 nanoparticles are loaded with sulforhodamine B and capped with self-immolative derivatives bearing ester moieties. In the absence of esterase enzyme negligible cargo release from N1, N3 and N4 nanoparticles is observed whereas a remarkable release for N2 is obtained most likely due to the formation of an irregular coating on the outer surface of the nanoparticles. In contrast, a marked delivery is found in N1, N3, and N4 in the presence of esterase enzyme. The delivery rate is related to the hydrophilic/hydrophobic character of the coating shell. The use of hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) derivatives as gating ensembles on N1 and N2 enables an easy access of esterase to the ester moieties with subsequent fast cargo release. On the other hand, the presence of a hydrophobic monolayer on N3 and N4 partially hinders esterase enzyme access to the ester groups and the rate of cargo release was decreased.

Hexagonal array formation by intermolecular halogen bonding using a binary blend of linear building blocks: STM study

Hexagonal arrays were fabricated via intermolecular halogen bonding between two linear molecular building blocks in a bicomponent blend. The substitution position of the pyridine N atom involved in the halogen bond plays an important role in the formation of the hexagonal structures.

Langmuir Nanoarchitectonics from Basic to Frontier

Methodology to combine nanotechnology and these organization processes has been proposed as a novel concept of nanoarchitectonics, which can fabricate functional materials with nanolevel units. As an instant nanoarchitectonics approach, confining systems within a two-dimensional plane to drastically reduce translational motion freedom can be regarded as one of the rational approaches. Supramolecular chemistry and nanofabrication and their related functions at the air-water interface with the concept of nanoarchitectonics would lead to the creation of a novel methodology of Langmuir nanoarchitectonics. In this feature article, we briefly summarize research efforts related to Langmuir nanoarchitectonics including the basics for anomalies in molecular interactions such as highly enhanced molecular recognition capabilities. It is also extended to frontiers including the fabrication of supramolecular receptors and two-dimensional patterns with subnanometer-scale structural regulation, manual control of molecular machines and receptors by hand-motion-like macroscopic actions, and the regulation of cell fates at nanoarchitected arrays of nanocarbon assemblies and at direct liquid interfaces.

Materials Nanoarchitectonics for Mechanical Tools in Chemical and Biological Sensing

In this Focus Review, nanoarchitectonic approaches for mechanical-action-based chemical and biological sensors are briefly discussed. In particular, recent examples of piezoelectric devices, such as quartz crystal microbalances (QCM and QCM-D) and a membrane-type surface stress sensor (MSS), are introduced. Sensors need well-designed nanostructured sensing materials for the sensitive and selective detection of specific targets. Nanoarchitectonic approaches for sensing materials, such as mesoporous materials, 2D materials, fullerene assemblies, supported lipid bilayers, and layer-by-layer assemblies, are highlighted. Based on these sensing approaches, examples of bioanalytical applications are presented for toxic gas detection, cell membrane interactions, label-free biomolecular assays, anticancer drug evaluation, complement activation-related multiprotein membrane attack complexes, and daily biodiagnosis, which are partially supported by data analysis, such as machine learning and principal component analysis.

Pore structure control factors of polyamine-bridged polysilsesquioxanes by sol-gel method and their structure-adsorption properties for Au(III)

A series of bridged polysilsesquioxane (BPS) materials was synthesized by the sol-gel method from 3-chloropropyl trimethoxysilane, diethylenetriamine (DETA) or ethylenediamine. Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and/or one of the two templates, hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) or P123, were used in the co-condensation process to construct some of the porous adsorbents. The adsorption of Au(III) was the highest for samples without TEOS, especially for the DETA series with CTAB template. This study elucidates the synthesis and applications of BPS materials.

Mechanochemically assisted hydrothermal synthesis of Sn-substituted MFI-type silicates

Substitution of Al atoms in a zeolite framework by catalytic metal atoms has attracted considerable attention because the catalytic behavior can be tuned by the substituted atoms. In the present study, Sn-substituted MFI-type silicates were synthesized using a hydrothermal reaction of an amorphous Si-O-Sn precursor prepared by mechanochemical grinding of SiO₂ and Sn(OH)₄. The mechanochemical treatment was found to be a key technique for obtaining the amorphous Si-O-Sn precursor, where tetrahedral Sn⁴⁺ species were incorporated into the amorphous matrix. The Sn content in the framework of the MFI-type silicates was successfully controlled by the initial HCl/Si molar ratio of the hydrothermal procedures. Optical reflectance measurements revealed that the Sn⁴⁺ ions were dispersedly incorporated into the silicate framework while preserving the initial tetrahedrally coordinated species. Infrared results imply that the resulting Sn-substituted MFI-type silicate has Brønsted acid character. Precise control of the Brønsted and Lewis acid properties by Sn doping is a promising approach to the development of novel types of zeolite-based catalytic materials.

Surface Separation and in Situ Structural Regulation of Photosensitive Oligomer in a Flexible Template

Surface-selective adsorption and separation are very important for the application of surface functional materials. In this study, a photosensitive diazo-macrocycle has been synthesized by the solvent method with a very low yield, which can adsorb onto the substrate surface modified with a template molecule. By using this flexible template on the graphite surface, a simple separation strategy for the macrocyclic molecule with specific shape and size from reaction mixtures was developed. Additionally, one of the two azo units in this trapped photosensitive macrocycle could convert from trans to cis conformation under UV irradiation due to the steric effect. Our results provide a new way to construct functional nanodevices using a surface flexible template as the separation and regulation medium.

Nanoarchitectonics from Molecular Units to Living-Creature-Like Motifs

Important points for the fabrication of functional materials are the creation of nanoscale/molecular-scale units and architecting them into functional materials and systems. Recently, a new conceptual paradigm, nanoarchitectonics, has been proposed to combine nanotechnology and other methodologies including supramolecular chemistry, self-assembly and self-organization to satisfy major features of nanoscience and promote the creation of functional materials and systems. In this account article, our recent research results in materials development based on the nanoarchitectonics concept are summarized in two stories, (i) nanoarchitectonics from fullerenes as the simplest nano-units and (ii) dimension-dependent nanoarchitectonics from various structural units. The former demonstrates creativity of the nanoarchitectonics concept only with simple construction stuffs on materials fabrications, and a wide range of material applicability for the nanoarchitectonics strategy is realized in the latter ones.

Hexagonal Molecular Tiling by Hexagonal Macrocycles at the Liquid/Solid Interface: Structural Effects on Packing Geometry

We present here hexagonal tiling using hexagonal phenylene-ethynylene and phenylene-butadiynylene macrocycles attached by alkyl ester groups, PEM-C6 and PBM-C8, respectively, or triethylene glycol ester groups, PEM-TEG and PBM-TEG, respectively, at each vertex of the macrocyclic periphery at the liquid/solid interface. In this study, we focused on the effects of macrocyclic core size and the chemical properties of side chains attached to macrocyclic cores as well as solute concentrations on the hexagonal geometry of self-assembled monolayers. STM observations at the 1,2,4-trichrolobenzene/graphite interface revealed that PEM-C6 formed a honeycomb structure by van der Waals interactions between the interdigitated alkyl chains. However, upon increasing solute concentration, it changed to more dense hexagonal structure (tentatively called loose hexagonal structure I). In contrast, PBM-C8 formed loose hexagonal structure II of a slightly different packing mode at low concentration, while at high concentration it formed a high-density hexagonal structure in which alkyl chains are not adsorbed on the surface (dense hexagonal structure). In the dense hexagonal structure, macrocyclic cores are linked by hydrogen bonds between the ester carbonyl oxygen and the aromatic hydrogen atoms of the neighboring macrocycles. The packing geometries of loose hexagonal structures of PEM-C6 and PBM-C8 are different due to the different distance between the attachment of the alkyl ester groups which are located in confined space. On the other hand, PEM-TEG and PBM-TEG formed dense hexagonal structures, similar to PBM-C8 at high concentration, with their TEG units not adsorbed on the surface.
