Methylenealkane-Based Low-Viscosity Ester Oils: Synthesis and Outlook

Both Group 4 poly-α-olefin (PAO) and Group 5 ester oil basestocks are used in formulations of synthetic engine oils, transmission fluids, and lubricants with leading characteristics such as low viscosity (providing fuel saving), high stability, and environmental safety. The modern technologies of the production of PAOs use catalytic oligomerization of α-olefins, which is complicated by the formation of low-molecular-weight α-olefin dimers (methylenealkanes) as imminent side products. The use of methylenealkanes as raw materials for the synthesis of Group 5 base stocks appears to be highly promising. In the present work, we report the use of methyl 3-butylnonanoate and methyl 3-hexylundecanoate, the products of catalytic methoxycarbonylation of hex-1-ene and oct-1-ene dimers, in the synthesis of two series of branched isomeric esters. These esters demonstrated excellent rheological behavior and may be considered as low-viscosity engine oils with leading characteristics.

Theoretical insights into the nature of PtSn bond: Reevaluating the bonding/back-bonding properties of trichlorostannate with comparison to the cyano ligand

The coordinating properties of the trichlorostannate ligand in hydrido platinum trichlorostannato and platinum bis-trichlorostannato complexes, containing various phosphine ligands, have been elucidated by means of charge decomposition analysis, the Ziegler-Rauk Energy Decomposition with the Natural Orbitals for Chemical Valence, Domain-Averaged Fermi Hole, and natural bond orbital methods. Trichlorostannate has been found to be a strong σ-donor and a weak π-acceptor ligand with coordination properties not far from those of the cyano ligand. For back-bonding, the tin-chlorine σ∗ orbitals are mostly responsible. In contrast to previous assumptions, the 5d orbitals of tin play no role at all in the interaction with the platinum center. QTAIM calculations suggest, that the platinum-tin interaction should be interpreted as donor-acceptor, rather than covalent type. Trichlorostannate has been found to have weaker trans influence in comparison to the cyano ligand. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Catalytic applications of small bite-angle diphosphorus ligands with single-atom linkers

Diphosphorus ligands connected by a single atom (R₂PEPR₂; E = CR₂, CCR₂and NR) give chelating ligands with very small bite-angles as well as enable access to other properties such as bridging modes and hemilability. ThisPerspectivereviews the properties of diphosphorus ligands featuring a single-atom linker and their applications in catalysis, including transformations of alkenes and transfer hydrogenation and hydrogen-borrowing reactions.

This review is to focus on computational studies on hydroformylation and theoretical coordination chemistry results related to hydroformylation.

Platinum(II)-catalyzed intermolecular hydroamination of monosubstituted allenes with secondary alkylamines

A 1:1 mixture of (dppf)PtCl(2) and AgOTf (5 mol%) catalyzed the intermolecular hydroamination of monosubstituted allenes with secondary alkylamines at 80 degrees C to form allylic amines in good yield with selective formation of the E-diastereomer.

Platinum-catalyzed hydroformylation of terminal and internal octenes

A brief historic overview of Pt/Sn-catalyzed hydroformylation as well as recent advances in the hydroformylation of internal alkenes is provided. This serves as background for the results obtained with the [Pt(Sixantphos)Cl(2)] system, for which the molecular structure and the spectroscopic data are described. Insitu UV/Vis-spectroscopic studies have revealed rapid formation of the corresponding Pt-stannate complex upon reaction with SnCl(2), whereas high-pressure insitu IR-spectroscopy showed formation of a Pt-CO species and a short-lived Pt-H species under syngas, as well as rapid evolution of aldehyde product upon addition of 1-octene to the preformed catalyst in the IR autoclave. The hydroformylation of 1-octene and the i-octenes has been performed. For the internal alkenes, selective tandem isomerization/hydroformylation towards n-nonanal is observed with this catalyst system.
