Structure and Dynamic Rearrangements of the Pt2dba3 and Pd2dba3 Complexes in Solution

Although the tris(dibenzylideneacetone)diplatinum complex (Pt2dba3) is an important source of Pt(0) used in catalysis and materials science, its structure has not yet been fully elucidated. A thorough study of the three-dimensional structure of Pt2dba3 and its dynamic behavior in solution was carried out using NMR spectroscopy methods at a high field (600 MHz) and molecular modeling. The complex was shown to contain three dba ligands in the s-cis,s-trans, s-trans,s-cis, and s-trans,s-trans conformations, which are uniformly oriented around the Pt2 backbone. In solution, the Pt2dba3 and Pd2dba3 complexes undergo rapid dynamic rearrangements, as evidenced by the exchange between the signals of the olefin protons of various dba ligands in the EXSY NMR spectra. According to the experimental measurements, the activation energies of the rearrangements were estimated to be 19.9 ± 0.2 and 17.9 ± 0.2 kcal/mol for the platinum and palladium complexes, respectively. Three possible mechanisms for this chemical exchange process were considered within the framework of DFT calculations. According to the calculated data, M2dba3 complexes undergo fluxional isomerization involving successive rotations of the dihedral angles formed by the carbonyl group and the C═C bond. Dissociation of dba ligands does not occur within these processes.

Inorganometallics (Transition Metal-Metalloid Complexes) and Catalysis

While the formation and breaking of transition metal (TM)-carbon bonds plays a pivotal role in the catalysis of organic compounds, the reactivity of inorganometallic species, that is, those involving the transition metal (TM)-metalloid (E) bond, is of key importance in most conversions of metalloid derivatives catalyzed by TM complexes. This Review presents the background of inorganometallic catalysis and its development over the last 15 years. The results of mechanistic studies presented in the Review are related to the occurrence of TM-E and TM-H compounds as reactive intermediates in the catalytic transformations of selected metalloids (E = B, Si, Ge, Sn, As, Sb, or Te). The Review illustrates the significance of inorganometallics in catalysis of the following processes: addition of metalloid-hydrogen and metalloid-metalloid bonds to unsaturated compounds; activation and functionalization of C-H bonds and C-X bonds with hydrometalloids and bismetalloids; activation and functionalization of C-H bonds with vinylmetalloids, metalloid halides, and sulfonates; and dehydrocoupling of hydrometalloids. This first Review on inorganometallic catalysis sums up the developments in the catalytic methods for the synthesis of organometalloid compounds and their applications in advanced organic synthesis as a part of tandem reactions.

Radical Germylzincation of Aryl- and Alkyl-Substituted Internal Alkynes

The stereoselective germylzincation of internal alkynes delivering trisubstituted vinylgermanes is achieved via a radical chain process involving Ph₃GeH and Et₂Zn with AIBN as the initiator. Excellent levels of regiocontrol are observed for nonsymmetric (aryl, alkyl)-substituted alkynes and for propargylic alcohols with aryl-, alkyl-, or silyl-substituted alkynes. The germylzincation reaction can be combined in one pot with the Cu(I)-mediated electrophilic substitution of the C(sp²)-Zn bond to obtain synthetically challenging tetrasubstituted vinylgermanes.

Tetryl-Tetrylene Addition to Phenylacetylene

Phenylacetylene adds [Ar*GeH2 -SnAr'], [Ar*GeH2 -PbAr'] and [Ar'SnH2 -PbAr*] at rt in a regioselective and stereoselective reaction. The highest reactivity was found for the stannylene, which reacts immediately upon addition of one equivalent of alkyne. However, the plumbylenes exhibit addition to the alkyne only in reaction with an excess of phenylacetylene. The product of the germylplumbylene addition reacts with a second equivalent of alkyne and the product of a CH-activation, a dimeric lead acetylide, were isolated. In the case of the stannylplumbylene the trans-addition product was characterized as the kinetically controlled product which isomerizes at rt to yield the cis-addition product, which is stabilized by an intramolecular Sn-H-Pb interaction. NMR chemical shifts of the olefins were investigated using two- and four-component relativistic DFT calculations, as spin-orbit effects can be large. Hydride abstraction was carried out by treating [Ar'SnPhC=CHGeH2 Ar*] with the trityl salt [Ph3 C][Al(OC{CF3 })4 ] to yield a four membered ring cation.

Reactions of Palladium Germylene Complexes: Formation of Sulfide Bridges

Reactivity of three novel Pd germylene species is presented. (Et(3)P)(2)PdGe[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2) (1) and (dppe)PdGe[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2) (6) react with COS to give the sulfide bridged species (Et3P)2Pd(mu S)Ge[N(SiMe3)2]2 (2) and (dppe)Pd(mu S)Ge-[N(SiMe3)2]2 (7) (dppe = (diphenylphosphino)ethane). (Ph(3)P)(2)PdGe[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2) (4) reacts with COS to give the disulfide bridged complex (Ph(3)P)(2)Pd(muS)(2)Ge[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2) (5) resulting in Pd-Ge bond cleavage. This phosphine dependent reactivity is explored. Crystal structures of 2, 5, 7, and the dimeric form of complex 2, (8), are reported. In the presence of excess germylene, complexes 2 and 5 are shown to partially regenerate their parent palladium germylene complexes, 1 and 4, respectively, via photolysis or heating.
