Abstract
Light-mediated processes have received significant attention, since they have re-surfaced unconventional reactivity platforms, complementary to conventional polar chemistry. γ-Lactones and cyclopropanes are prevalent moieties, found in numerous natural products and pharmaceuticals. Among various methods for their synthesis, light-mediated protocols are coming to the spotlight, although these are contingent upon the use of photoorgano- or metal-based catalysts. Herein, we introduce a novel photochemical activation of iodo-reagents via the use of cheap sodium ascorbate or ascorbic acid to enable their homolytic scission and addition onto double bonds. The developed protocol was applied successfully to the formal [3+2] cycloaddition for the synthesis of γ-lactones, traditional atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) reactions and the one-pot two-step conversion of alkenes to cyclopropanes. In all cases, the desired products were obtained in good to high yields, while the reaction mechanism was thoroughly investigated. Depending on the nature of the iodo-reagent, a halogen or a hydrogen-bonded complex is formed, which initiates the process.

Abstract
A reductive (3+2) annulation of lactams through iridium-catalyzed hydrosilylation and photoredox coupling with α-bromoacetic acid was developed. The iridium-catalyzed hydrosilylation of the lactam carbonyl group and subsequent elimination provide a transient cyclic enamine, which undergoes iridium-catalyzed photoredox coupling with α-bromoacetic acid in a one-pot process. The developed conditions show high functional-group tolerance and provide cyclic N,O-acetals containing a quaternary carbon center. The resulting N,O-acetals undergo a variety of acid-mediated nucleophilic addition reactions via iminium ions to give substituted cyclic amines. The developed sequence including reductive (3+2) annulation and acid-mediated nucleophilic addition was successfully applied to the four-step total synthesis of (±)-eburnamonine.

Abstract
Spirocyclic butyrolactones and butenolides are widespread structural motifs in bioactive substances. Despite their prevalence, a simple method ensuring their direct preparation from exocyclic alkenes, ideally in a late-stage context, remains elusive. Herein, we report direct aminolactone formation using unactivated alkenes which addresses this gap, employing cheap and readily available reactants. The method relies on the hijacking of a cationic aminoalkylation pathway and affords (spiro)aminolactones with excellent functional group tolerance and chemoselectivity. The synthetic versatility of the products is demonstrated through a range of transformations, notably exploiting stereospecific rearrangement chemistry to produce sterically congested scaffolds.

Abstract
Chiral lactones are found in many natural products. The reaction of simple alkenes with iodoacetic acid is a powerful method to build lactones, but the enantioselective version of this reaction has not been implemented to date. Herein, we report the efficient catalytic radical enantioselective carbo-esterification of styrenes enabled by a newly developed CuI -perfluoroalkylated PyBox system. Simple styrenes have been converted to useful chiral lactones, whose synthetic applications are showcased. Mechanistic studies reveal that this reaction is a rare example of an efficient ligand-decelerated system, in which the ligand decelerates the reaction, but the reaction is still efficient with reduced amounts of ligand. This uncommon catalytic system may inspire further consideration of the effect of ligands in asymmetric catalysis.

Abstract
Various protected β2-amino acids can be prepared by radical addition of β-phthalimido-α-xanthyl propionic acid, both as the free acid or as the ethyl ester. Successive radical additions provide access to more complex structures. In the case of the free acid, addition to certain heteroaromatics leads directly to β-heteroarylethylamines through spontaneous decarboxylation of the intermediate adduct. Forcing the decarboxylation in some cases generated a vinyl group by decarboxylative elimination of the phthalimido group.

Abstract
An abundant and low toxicity iron catalyst has enabled regioselective annulation of alkenes with α-halocarboxylic acids and their derivatives. The reaction proceeds smoothly without any additional ligands, bases, and additives to afford a variety of γ-lactones in good yields. A proposed reaction pathway through radical annulation is supported by some mechanistic studies, involving radical clock and isotope labeling experiments. The present method was applied to the practical iron-powder-promoted synthesis of γ-lactones.

Abstract
A novel smart hierarchical ultrasound-responsive mesoporous silica nanocarrier for cancer therapy is presented here. This dynamic nanosystem has been designed to display different surface characteristics during its journey towards tumor cells. Initially, the anticancer-loaded nanocarriers are shielded with a polyethylene glycol layer. Upon exposure to high frequency ultrasound, the polymer shell detaches from the nanoparticles, exposing a positively charged surface. This favors the internalization in human osteosarcoma cells, where the release of topotecan takes place, drastically enhancing the cytotoxic effect.

Abstract
The efficiency and selectivity of hydrogen atom transfer from organic molecules are often difficult to control in the presence of multiple potential hydrogen atom donors and acceptors. Here, we describe the mechanistic evaluation of a mode of catalytic activation that accomplishes the highly selective photoredox α-alkylation/lactonization of alcohols with methyl acrylate via a hydrogen atom transfer mechanism. Our studies indicate a particular role of tetra-n-butylammonium phosphate in enhancing the selectivity for α C-H bonds in alcohols in the presence of allylic, benzylic, α-C=O, and α-ether C-H bonds.

Abstract
The development of a silica-promoted highly selective synthesis of 1,2 or 1,3-dithioethers via solvent-free one-pot tandem reactions of an allyl bromide with excess thiol at room temperature is described. The choice of silica gel, either pre-calcined or moistened with water, exhibited notable regioselectivity in the formation of dithioethers. Plausible mechanistic routes were explored and postulated.

Abstract
Tetrabutylammonium decatungstate (TBADT, 2 x 10(-3) m) is an effective photocatalyst for the alkylation of electrophilic alkenes (0.1 m, alpha,beta-unsaturated nitriles, esters, ketones) by alkanes, alcohols, and ethers. The products are in most cases obtained in >70 % isolated yields, through an experimentally very simple procedure. The kinetics of the radical processes following initial hydrogen abstraction by excited TBADT in deoxygenated MeCN have been studied. In the absence of a trap, back hydrogen transfer from reduced tungstate is the main pathway for alkyl radicals, while alpha-hydroxyalkyl radicals are oxidized to ketones by ground-state TBADT. With both radical types the reaction ceases at a few percent conversion. However, trapping by electrophilic alkenes is followed by reduction of the radical adduct and regeneration of the catalyst, which allows the alkylation to proceed up to complete alkene conversion with the mentioned good yields of products. With a nucleophilic (alpha-hydroxyalkyl) radical, alkylation is efficient (Phi = 0.58) and can also be carried out when degassing is omitted, the only difference being a short induction period. With a less reactive (cyclohexyl) radical, the quantum yield is lower (Phi = 0.06) and the reaction is considerably slowed in aerated solutions, but the chemical yield remains good.

Abstract
The representative examples of beneficial effects of hydrophilic groups in aqueous organic reactions are described, including the Diels-Alder reactions, hetero Diels-Alder reactions, Claisen rearrangement, radical reactions, and transition metal-catalyzed reactions. Although the low solubility of organic molecules in water has been a bane in aqueous organic reactions, the incorporation of hydrophilic groups into the substrate structure can overcome the solubility problem and at the same time enhance the hydrophobic effect. In some cases, interesting micellar effects are observed because of the amphiphilic natures of such molecules. The emerging concept of "removable hydrophilic group," in which the solubility problems have been alleviated, yet the initial product can still be transformed into a variety of products with the removal of the hydrophilic groups, is also described.
