Abstract
AbstractA series of organic/inorganic hybrid materials containing the single-molecule magnet [Mn12(CH3COO)16(H2O)4O12]·2CH3COOH·4H2O with the photochromic compounds azobenzene or disperse red 1 cast into polymethyl methacrylate films was prepared. To understand the photomodulation of analogous mixtures’ AC susceptibility, we investigated the molecular alignment based on Weigert’s effect accompanying cycles of cis-trans photoisomerization by alternate irradiations with polarized UV and visible light. Polarized electronic spectra of the hybrid materials demonstrated gradually increasing anisotropy. These features suggest interactions between photochromic compounds and the Mn12 complex in polymethyl methacrylate.

Abstract
The magnetic properties of many magnetic materials can be controlled by external stimuli. The principal focus here is on the thermal, photochemical, electrochemical, and chemical control of phase transitions that involve changes in magnetization. The molecular compounds described herein range from metal complexes, through pure organic compounds to composite materials. Most of the Review is devoted to the properties of valence-tautomeric compounds, molecular magnets, and spin-crossover complexes, which could find future application in memory devices or optical switches.

Abstract
The optical switching of coupled plasmons of silver nanoparticles derivatised with a photoisomerisable azobenzene ligand is presented. It is shown that nanoparticle clusters, linked with an azobenzene dithiol molecule, display switchable optical properties. The photoisomerisation of the linker molecule was used to vary the separation between nanoparticles, which was monitored by changes in the UV-Vis-spectra of the plasmon band of adjacent nanoparticles. A red-shift due to the appearance of a coupled longitudinal plasmon band was observed resulting from the formation of nanoparticle clusters. The maximum absorbance wavelength of this secondary plasmon band was altered by isomerisation of the linker and the spectral changes observed were in good agreement with theory and earlier measurements for gold. Evidence of energy transfer between a nanoparticle and an azobenzene terminated monothiol attached to it was also observed in the UV-Vis spectra.
