Chemistry of Several Sterically Bulky Molecules with P=P, P=C, and C≡P Bond. Molecules 2022; 27:molecules27051557. Abstract
Several sterically protected, low-coordinate organophosphorus compounds with P=P, P=C, and C≡P bond are described in this study. Molecules such as diphosphenes, phosphaalkenes, 1-phosphaallenes, 1,3-diphosphaallenes, 3,4-diphosphinidenecyclobutenes, and phosphaalkynes are stabilized with an extremely bulky 2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyl (Mes*) group. The synthesis, structures, physical, and chemical properties of these molecules are discussed, together with some successful applications in catalytic organic reactions.

Abstract
Treatment of Mes*P=C(Si(CH3)3)Br with CH2=CHMgBr in the presence of Pd(0) affords 1-phosphabutadiene Mes*P=C(Si(CH3)3)–CH=CH2 (1) selectively as the Z isomer. Remarkably, treatment of Z-1 with n-BuLi (0.1 equiv.) resulted in quantitative formation of E-1. The exact role of the n-BuLi is unknown; however, it appears to be required to promote the isomerization in the absence of light. The isomerization of Z-1 to E-1 was also mediated by sunlight with the reaction mixture consisting of a ca. 1:9 ratio of Z-1 to E-1. DFT calculations were consistent with the thermodynamic favorability of the isomerization of Z-1 to E-1.

Abstract
A facile method for the efficient synthesis of 3H-phosphaallenes, R-P=C=C(H)-R', is presented, which comprises treatment of dialkynylphosphines with dialkylaluminium hydrides (hydroalumination) and elimination of aluminium alkynides from intermediate alkenyl-alkynylphosphines. The stability of the phosphaallenes depends on steric shielding by the substituents at phosphorus (aryl or CH(SiMe3 )2 groups). Only supermesityl compounds are persistent at room temperature in solution. This simple method starting with easily accessible dialkynylphosphines and commercially available aluminium hydrides (HAlEt2 , HAliBu2 ) allows the generation of transient species, which were trapped by coordination to transition metals. The η1 -coordination via a P-W bond was observed for tungsten, while the side-on coordination via the P=C bond resulted with platinum. Decomposition of the mesityl derivative yielded an unprecedented product, which may be formed by 1,3-H shift to the P atom, hydrophosphination of the P=C bond of a second phosphaallene and formation of a P-P bond.

Abstract
Abstract
Utilizing 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl as a sterically demanding group (abbreviated as Mes*), we have been successful in isolation, characterization, physical and chemical property investigation of low-coordinate organophosphorus compounds such as those carrying P=P and P=C bonds. Diphosphene, 1-phosphaethene, 1,3-diphosphaallene, 1-phosphaallene, and 3,4-diphosphinidenecyclobutenes are discussed in terms of stereochemistry including E/Z isomerization around P=P or P=C bond and R/S resolution of rotational isomers around crowded P–C bonds with chiral HPLC column. (π-Allyl)palladium complexes ligated with 3,4-diphosphinidenecyclobutene are useful in such catalytic organic reactions as the Tsuji-Trost reaction by which from a chiral s-alcohol, the corresponding chiral amine is obtained with retention of chirality suggesting double inversion process.

Abstract
Reactions of sterically protected 2-bromo-3-phenyl-1-phosphapropenes with bases such as tert-butyllithium and potassium tert-butoxide successfully afforded a bulky 1,4-diphosphafulvene (Mes = 2,4,6-tBu(3)C(6)H(2)) through a novel and formal dimerization pathway of 1-phosphaallene, together with small amounts of 3-phenyl-1-phosphaallene and 3,4-diphosphanylidenecyclobutene. The structure of the 1,4-diphosphafulvene was confirmed by X-ray crystallography indicating somewhat flattened phosphorus atoms due to the bulky Mes groups. The electrochemical properties of the 1,4-diphosphafulvene were investigated to show promising suitability as an electron donor, and indeed, it afforded a charge-transfer complex with TCNQ. Preparation and structural elucidation of an alkoxy-functionalized 1-phosphaallene was also performed, and the effect of the alkoxy group on the 1-phosphaallene moiety was characterized.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] Sterically protected 3,4-diphosphinidenecyclobutenes, having ring-fused structures, were prepared. Structures of 8,9-bis[(2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl)phosphinidene]bicyclo[5.2.0]non-1(7)-ene and its dichloropalladium(II) complex were analyzed by X-ray crystallography. A geometrical change induced by the complex formation was exhibited by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The geometrical change in solution was also suggested by (1)H NMR spectroscopy in CDCl(3).
