Imaging of renal lesions: evaluation of fast MRI and helical CT

ACR Appropriateness Criteria® Staging of Renal Cell Carcinoma: 2022 Update

Renal cell carcinoma is a complex group of highly heterogenous renal tumors demonstrating variable biological behavior. Pretreatment imaging of renal cell carcinoma involves accurate assessment of the primary tumor, presence of nodal, and distant metastases. CT and MRI are the key imaging modalities used in the staging of renal cell carcinoma. Important imaging features that impact treatment include tumor extension into renal sinus and perinephric fat, involvement of pelvicalyceal system, infiltration into adrenal gland, involvement of renal vein and inferior vena cava, as well as the presence of metastatic adenopathy and distant metastases. The American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria are evidence-based guidelines for specific clinical conditions that are reviewed annually by a multidisciplinary expert panel. The guideline development and revision process support the systematic analysis of the medical literature from peer reviewed journals. Established methodology principles such as Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation or GRADE are adapted to evaluate the evidence. The RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method User Manual provides the methodology to determine the appropriateness of imaging and treatment procedures for specific clinical scenarios. In those instances where peer reviewed literature is lacking or equivocal, experts may be the primary evidentiary source available to formulate a recommendation.

Metabolic tumour volume on 18F-FDG PET/CT predicts extended pathological T stages in patients with renal cell carcinoma at staging

We evaluated the predictive value of ¹⁸F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake on positron emission tomography/CT (PET/CT) for extended pathological T (pT) stages (≥ pT3a) in Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients at staging. Thirty-eight RCC patients who underwent ¹⁸F-FDG PET/CT at staging, followed by radical nephrectomy between September 2016 and September 2018, were included in this prospective study. Patients were classified into two groups (limited pT stage: stage T1/2, n = 17; extended pT stage: T3/4, n = 21). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify clinicopathological and metabolic variables to predict extended pT stages. ¹⁸F-FDG metabolic parameters were compared in relation to International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) grade and lymphovascular invasion (LVI). In univariate analysis, maximum standardised uptake value, metabolic tumour volume (MTV), and ISUP grade were significant. In multivariate analysis, MTV was the only significant factor of extended pT stages. With a cut-off MTV of 21.2, an area under the curve was 0.944, which was higher than 0.824 for clinical T stages (p = 0.037). In addition, high MTV, but not tumour size, was significantly correlated with aggressive pathologic features (ISUP grade and LVI). High glycolytic tumour volume on ¹⁸F-FDG PET/CT in RCC patients at staging is predictive of extended pT stages which could aid decision-making regarding the best type of surgery.

Multiscale brain MRI super-resolution using deep 3D convolutional networks

The purpose of super-resolution approaches is to overcome the hardware limitations and the clinical requirements of imaging procedures by reconstructing high-resolution images from low-resolution acquisitions using post-processing methods. Super-resolution techniques could have strong impacts on structural magnetic resonance imaging when focusing on cortical surface or fine-scale structure analysis for instance. In this paper, we study deep three-dimensional convolutional neural networks for the super-resolution of brain magnetic resonance imaging data. First, our work delves into the relevance of several factors in the performance of the purely convolutional neural network-based techniques for the monomodal super-resolution: optimization methods, weight initialization, network depth, residual learning, filter size in convolution layers, number of the filters, training patch size and number of training subjects. Second, our study also highlights that one single network can efficiently handle multiple arbitrary scaling factors based on a multiscale training approach. Third, we further extend our super-resolution networks to the multimodal super-resolution using intermodality priors. Fourth, we investigate the impact of transfer learning skills onto super-resolution performance in terms of generalization among different datasets. Lastly, the learnt models are used to enhance real clinical low-resolution images. Results tend to demonstrate the potential of deep neural networks with respect to practical medical image applications.

Rare case of an upper urinary tract carcinoma (UTUC) in renal pelvis and ureter associated to renal vein thrombosis: diagnostic imaging with CECT, MRI and CEUS

A 58-year-old woman complaining of dyspnea and mild flank pain was admitted to our radiology department after undergoing ultrasonography in another institution. She showed hydronephrosis and left kidney swelling. We performed a contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) that confirmed the hydronephrosis and revealed a widely hypoperfused left kidney, a concentric thickening of the proximal ureter, and a slight and diffuse thickening of the renal pelvic wall, with a hyperdense content in the unenhanced CT phase and poor contrast enhancement in the post-contrast phases. A proximal ipsilateral renal vein thrombosis was associated. Non-contrast magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the CECT findings. At the same time, we performed a contrast-enhanced ultrasonography examination, which proved to be helpful for the characterization of the lesion and for patient management.

Comparison of MDCT, MRI and MRI with diffusion-weighted imaging in evaluation of focal renal lesions: The defender, challenger, and winner!

Purpose:

To compare the diagnostic performance of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and MRI with diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in the characterization of focal renal lesions. We also compared MDCT and MRI in the staging of renal cell carcinoma (RCC).

Materials and Methods:

One hundred and twenty adult patients underwent MDCT (40-row and 128-row scanners), MRI (at 1.5 T), and DWI (at b-values of 0 and 500 s/mm²) for characterization of 225 renal lesions. There were 65 malignant neoplasms (44 RCCs), 25 benign neoplasms, 25 abscesses, 45 pseudotumors, 15 hemorrhagic cysts, and 50 benign cysts. A composite gold standard including histology, typical imaging criteria, and follow-up imaging was employed. To determine the diagnostic performance of imaging modalities, area-under-curve (AUC) was calculated by receiver-operating-characteristic analysis and compared. Fisher's exact test was used to compare the diagnostic accuracies and confidence levels with MDCT, MRI, and MRI + DWI. Cross-tabulation was used to assess the precision of MDCT and MRI in RCC staging.

Results:

AUC for MDCT (0.834) and MRI (0.841) in the classification of benign and malignant lesions were within corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) (P = 0.88) whereas MRI + DWI had significantly better performance (AUC 0.968, P = 0.0002 and 0.0004, respectively). Both CT and MRI had low specificity (66.9% and 68.8%, respectively), which increased substantially with DWI (93.8%) owing to correct diagnosis of pseudotumors. MRI was superior to CT in diagnosing necrotic RCC and hemorrhagic cysts. MRI + DWI had the highest accuracy (94.2%) in assigning the definitive diagnosis and 97.6% lesions were diagnosed with very high confidence, significantly better than CT and MRI. Both CT and MRI had the same accuracy (86.1%) in RCC staging and evaluation of intravascular thrombi.

Conclusions:

Characterization of renal lesions was most accurate with MRI + DWI. The latter is also the most suitable modality in diagnosing pseudotumors and evaluating patients with renal dysfunction. CT and MRI were equivalent in RCC staging.

Haematuria: an imaging guide

This paper discusses the current status of imaging in the investigation of patients with haematuria. The physician must rationalize imaging so that serious causes such as malignancy are promptly diagnosed while at the same time not exposing patients to unnecessary investigations. There is currently no universal agreement about the optimal imaging work up of haematuria. The choice of modality to image the urinary tract will depend on individual patient factors such as age, the presence of risk factors for malignancy, renal function, a history of calculus disease and pregnancy, and other factors, such as local policy and practice, cost effectiveness and availability of resources. The role of all modalities, including conventional radiography, intravenous urography/excretory urography, ultrasonography, retrograde pyelography, multidetector computed tomography urography (MDCTU), and magnetic resonance urography, is discussed. This paper highlights the pivotal role of MDCTU in the imaging of the patient with haematuria and discusses issues specific to this modality including protocol design, imaging of the urothelium, and radiation dose. Examination protocols should be tailored to the patient while all the while optimizing radiation dose.

Magnetic Resonance Image Example-Based Contrast Synthesis

The performance of image analysis algorithms applied to magnetic resonance images is strongly influenced by the pulse sequences used to acquire the images. Algorithms are typically optimized for a targeted tissue contrast obtained from a particular implementation of a pulse sequence on a specific scanner. There are many practical situations, including multi-institution trials, rapid emergency scans, and scientific use of historical data, where the images are not acquired according to an optimal protocol or the desired tissue contrast is entirely missing. This paper introduces an image restoration technique that recovers images with both the desired tissue contrast and a normalized intensity profile. This is done using patches in the acquired images and an atlas containing patches of the acquired and desired tissue contrasts. The method is an example-based approach relying on sparse reconstruction from image patches. Its performance in demonstrated using several examples, including image intensity normalization, missing tissue contrast recovery, automatic segmentation, and multimodal registration. These examples demonstrate potential practical uses and also illustrate limitations of our approach.

Image-Guided Abdominal Surgery and Therapy Delivery

Image-Guided Surgery has become the standard of care in intracranial neurosurgery providing more exact resections while minimizing damage to healthy tissue. Moving that process to abdominal organs presents additional challenges in the form of image segmentation, image to physical space registration, organ motion and deformation. In this paper, we present methodologies and results for addressing these challenges in two specific organs: the liver and the kidney.

Wunderlich syndrome: cross-sectional imaging review

Wunderlich syndrome (WS) is a rare condition characterized by acute onset of spontaneous, nontraumatic renal hemorrhage into the subcapsular and perirenal spaces. Wunderlich syndrome is classically characterized by the Lenk's triad: acute flank pain, flank mass, and hypovolemic shock. However, the clinical manifestations can be varied and nonspecific. A wide spectrum of neoplastic and nonneoplastic renal pathologies may result in WS. Renal neoplasms are the most common cause for WS, with angiomyolipoma being the most common benign neoplasm, whereas renal cell carcinoma is the most common malignant neoplasm. Other causative conditions of WS include vascular causes (vasculitis [polyarteritis nodosa being the most common cause], renal artery aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and fistulas, and venous thrombosis), cystic renal diseases, renal infections, calculus disease, nephritis, and coagulation disorders. Cross-sectional imaging findings help in the detection of the subcapsular and/or perinephric hemorrhage and may identify underlying etiology. Renal angiography not only helps in diagnosis of the underlying cause in select cases but also allows control of active bleeding, which can avoid unnecessary emergent radical surgery.

Minor head injury in children

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

This review will examine mild closed head injury (CHI) and the current evidence on head computed tomography (CT) imaging risks in children, prediction rules to guide decisions on CT scan use, and issues of concussion after initial evaluation.

RECENT FINDINGS

The current literature offers preliminary evidence on the risks of radiation exposure from CT scans in children. A recent study introduces a validated prediction rule for use in mild CHI, to limit the number of CT scans performed. Concurrent with this progress, fast (or short sequence) MRI represents an emerging technology that may prove to be a viable alternative to CT scan use in certain cases of mild CHI where imaging is desired. The initial emergency department evaluation for mild CHI is the start point for a sequence of follow-up to assure that postconcussive symptoms fully resolve. The literature on sports-related concussion offers some information that may be used for patients with non-sports-related concussion.

SUMMARY

It is clear that CT scan use should be as safe and limited in scope as possible for children. Common decisions on the use of CT imaging for mild head injury can now be guided by a prediction rule for clinically important traumatic brain injury. Parameters for the follow-up care of patients with mild CHI after emergency department discharge are needed in the future to assure that postconcussive symptoms are adequately screened for full resolution.

[Diagnostic procedures in upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma]

Upper urinary tract transitional cell carcinomas represent 5-6% of all urothelial carcinomas. Macroscopic hematuria is the most common symptom. The diagnostic algorithm contains medical history, clinical investigation, cystoscopy, urinary cytology, ultrasound and intravenous urography. When suspected, a complementary retrograde pyeloureterography with collecting selective urinary cytology is conducted. When radiological findings are doubted or when conservative treatment is planned, an ureterorenoscopy for biopsy of the suspected area is indicated. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance tomography is used to define the local extension of invasive tumors and to detect metastases. The use of urinary markers in the diagnosis of upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma has to be evaluated in prospective trials.

Radiologic evaluation of small renal masses (I): pretreatment management

When characterizing a small renal mass (SRM), the main question to be answered is whether the mass represents a surgical or nonsurgical lesion or, in some cases, if followup studies are a reasonable option. Is this a task for a urologist or a radiologist? It is obvious that in the increasing clinical scenario where this decision has to be made, both specialists ought to work together. This paper will focus on the principles, indications, and limitations of ultrasound, CT, and MRI to characterize an SRM in 2008 with a detailed review of relevant literature. Special emphasis has been placed on aspects regarding the bidirectional information between radiologists and urologists needed to achieve the best radiological approach to an SRM.

[Imaging capabilities in upper urothelial malignancies differentiation]

Aim of our study is to analyze sensitivity and specificity of imaging procedures in characterization upper urothelial malignancies, according to algorithm suggested by American Urology Association.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

We analyzed 242 patients with kidney tumor masses who had been operated during 2006/2007 at Urological clinic in Belgrade. Due to pathohistological exam 210 patients had kidney parenchyma and 32 patients upper urothelial kidney tumor.

RESULTS

According to tumor stage, computed tomography was sufficient and definitive diagnostic tool concerning both renal epithelial and upper urothelial malignancy. Only in four cases 1.60% (4/242; CT in 3/4, MRI 1/4) preoperative site of origin was different from histopathology findings. This mislead to inappropriate surgery plan.

CONCLUSION

Familiarity with limitations and capabilities of imaging modalities is crucial for appropriate diagnosis. It should respect algorithm but has to be individual adapted.

Renal tumour size measured radiologically before surgery is an unreliable variable for predicting histopathological features: benign tumours are not necessarily small

OBJECTIVE

To compare histopathological findings as a function of radiological tumour size, as published data suggest that small renal tumours are often benign and large tumours are renal cell cancer (RCC).

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Data from 543 surgically treated patients with solid renal tumours were analysed retrospectively. Tumour size measured by computed tomography (CT) before surgery was stratified into seven subgroups (cm): 0-2, 2.1-3, 3.1-4, 4.1-5, 5.1-6, 6.1-7 and >7, and correlated with final histology.

RESULTS

In all, 80 lesions (14.7%) were benign on final histology; tumour size did not correlate with benign histology (P=0.660). Histopathological tumour size was not statistically significant different (P=0.521) from measured tumour size on CT, and there was no statistical significance between CT and histopathological tumour size (P=0.528). Only 13 (17%) of lesions were correctly defined as benign on CT before surgery, whereas 67 (83%) were considered to be suspicious for malignant disease. Only one patient with a tumour correctly defined as benign had a radical nephrectomy; by contrast, 28 of 67 (42%) had a radical nephrectomy for benign lesions not correctly identified as benign on CT before surgery (P<0.001).

CONCLUSION

Substantially many renal masses are benign, independent of tumour size. Radical nephrectomy could potentially have been avoided in 42% of patients with benign renal tumours. These data provide a good argument for the use of a more refined preoperative diagnostic evaluation, in particular needle biopsy.

Renal Mass Core Biopsy: Accuracy and Impact on Clinical Management

OBJECTIVE

The objective of our study was to determine the accuracy of imaging-guided percutaneous renal mass biopsy and its impact on clinical management.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

With institutional review board approval, we retrospectively reviewed imaging-guided renal biopsies performed by radiologists at our institution between February 1999 and July 2005. Patient records, pathology reports, and imaging studies were reviewed. Concordance of biopsy diagnosis and follow-up data was assessed. Significant impact on clinical management was determined in collaboration with two experienced urologists and was defined as a change from no therapy to therapy, including surgery, tumor ablation, chemotherapy, or radiation.

RESULTS

Two hundred seventy-six renal biopsies were performed during the study period. Of these, 123 were random biopsies and fine-needle technique was used for one; these 124 were excluded. One hundred fifty-two renal mass biopsies were performed using coaxial 18-gauge core needle technique in 125 patients (55 women, 70 men; average age, 60 years; range, 28-90 years). There were two (1.3%) postprocedural hematomas (one [0.7%] requiring blood transfusion) and one (0.7%) delayed renal pseudoaneurysm attributed to biopsy. No tumor seeding was identified. In 85 biopsies (56%), malignant neoplasm was found, 61 biopsies (40%) yielded benign findings, and six (4%) were nondiagnostic. The sensitivity for malignancy was 97.7%; specificity, 100%; positive predictive value, 100%; and negative predictive value, 100%. At least 92 (60.5%) biopsy results significantly impacted clinical management.

CONCLUSION

Imaging-guided percutaneous core needle biopsy of renal masses is safe and highly accurate. Tissue diagnosis alters clinical decision making in a majority of the cases and may allow a number of unnecessary nephrectomies to be avoided.

Are Small Renal Tumors Harmless? Analysis of Histopathological Features According to Tumors 4 Cm or Less in Diameter

PURPOSE

Small renal tumors detected incidentally are considered to have less aggressive potential. This assumption is mainly based on the low tendency to increase in size on serial imaging studies, but histopathological parameters of progression in larger patient series are scant.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We reviewed data of 287 tumor bearing kidneys in which solid tumors 4 cm or less in diameter were detected by cross-sectional imaging and subsequently removed surgically. Tumor size as documented by preoperative computerized tomography was correlated to histological diagnosis, and in cases of malignancy correlated to tumor type, pathological TNM stage and nuclear (Fuhrman) grade. With multifocal lesions the largest single tumor was considered the reference lesion but multifocality was also considered a separate parameter.

RESULTS

At a mean tumor diameter of 2.94 +/- 0.87 cm 65 (22.6%) tumors were 2 cm or less, 103 (35.9%) were 2.1 to 3.0 cm and 119 (41.5%) were 3.1 to 4 cm in diameter. A total of 56 (19.5%) tumors were benign with no correlation to tumor size (Pearson test p = 0.660). Renal cell cancer was found in 227 (79.1%) patients with 159 (70.0%) clear cell, 47 (20.7%) papillary, 11 (4.8%) chromophobe and 10 others with no correlation to tumor diameter. Of the kidneys 31 (13.6%) had multifocal renal cell carcinoma, with a significant correlation to larger tumor diameter (linear regression p = 0.048) and papillary renal cell carcinoma subtype (linear regression p = 0.018). Two (4.2%), 4 (5%) and 25 (25.5%) cases of renal cell carcinoma 2 cm or less, 2.1 to 3 cm and 3.1 to 4 cm in diameter had Fuhrman grade G3/4, respectively (Pearson p = 0.0007). Advanced stage (pT3a or greater) was documented in 2 (4.2%), 12 (14.9%) and 35 (35.7%) cases for the same categories, respectively (p = 0.0023). Whereas distant metastases were diagnosed in only 4 patients with renal cell carcinoma with tumors 3 cm or less, distant metastases were in 10 (8.4%) patients with tumors 3.1 to 4 cm (p = 0.045).

CONCLUSIONS

The aggressive potential of small renal cell carcinoma increases dramatically beyond a tumor diameter of 3 cm. Given the difficulty in measuring tumor diameters reliably with sequential imaging studies, the threshold for selecting patients for a surveillance strategy should be set well under this parameter.

Venous spread of renal cell carcinoma: MDCT

BACKGROUND

The purpose of our study was to present multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) findings in venous spread of renal cell carcinoma (RCC), to determine the superior extent of tumor thrombus and to compare MDCT findings with surgical report.

METHODS

The prospective MDCT study was performed on 31 patients diagnosed with RCC with venous spread (19 males and 12 females; age range 39-80 years; mean age 62.6 years). CT scans were obtained by MDCT scanner, in triphasic scanning protocol. All postprocessing techniques were performed by two independent radiologists, and the findings were reported in their consensus. MDCT diagnosis was compared with surgical and pathohistological findings.

RESULTS

Tumor thrombus extension into renal vein only (T3b stage) was found in 13/31 (42%) patients. Involvement of infradiaphragmatic level of inferior vena cava (IVC) (T3c stage) was found in 14/31 (45%) patients and supradiaphragmatic level of IVC (T4b stage) in 4/31 (13%) patients. In 27/31 (87%) patients surgery was performed, while 4/31 (13%) could not undergo surgery. In comparison with surgical report, in 25/27 (93%) operated patients the upper extent of the tumor thrombus was correctly diagnosed by MDCT, and 2/27 (7%) patients were falsely diagnosed.

CONCLUSION

MDCT represents a fast, relatively inexpensive, and reliable diagnostic method for evaluating the venous spread of RCC as well as the level of its upper extent. Triphasic MDCT is often the only diagnostic method necessary for planning the surgical procedure. Surgery should be performed as soon as possible for MDCT findings to be valid.

Comparison of 16-MDCT and MRI for Characterization of Kidney Lesions

OBJECTIVE

The objective of our study was to compare the diagnostic performance of 16-MDCT with that of MRI in the characterization of kidney lesions.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

Twenty-eight patients with kidney lesions detected with sonography and requiring further evaluation were examined. MDCT was performed in the unenhanced, arterial, and portal venous phases. MRI was performed at 1.5 T with T2- and T1-weighted and dynamic gadolinium-enhanced sequences. Consensus reading was done by two radiologists. Image quality was rated on a four-point scale. Classification of lesions as surgical or nonsurgical was done with five levels of confidence, and it was required that a definite diagnosis be assigned to each lesion. The 1997 TNM classification was used for staging. Statistical analysis was done by receiver operating characteristic analysis or paired Student's t test. Histologic or follow-up findings at least 12 months after the primary diagnosis served as the standard of reference.

RESULTS

The image quality of MDCT (mean grade, 2.79 on a 0-3 scale) was superior to that of MRI (1.93; p < 0.01). The area under the curve for differentiating surgical from nonsurgical lesions was 0.979 for MDCT and 0.957 for MRI with resulting sensitivity and specificity values of 92.3% and 96.3% for MDCT and 92.3% and 91.3% for MRI. Sensitivity and specificity for definite classification of the lesions were 93.8% and 68.4% for MDCT and 93.8% and 71.4% for MRI.

CONCLUSION

Both MDCT and MRI are excellent for differentiating surgical from nonsurgical kidney lesions. Both methods have low specificity for the differentiation of benign from malignant lesions.

Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the Upper Urinary Tract: Spectrum of Imaging Findings

Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) accounts for up to 10% of neoplasms of the upper urinary tract and usually manifests as hematuria. Imaging plays an important role in assessment of upper tract disease, unlike in bladder TCC, diagnosis of which is usually made at cystoscopy. Traditional imaging modalities, such as excretory urography, retrograde pyelography, and ultrasonography, still play pivotal roles in diagnosis of upper tract TCC, in combination with endourologic techniques. The multicentric nature of TCC makes assessment of the entire urothelium essential before treatment. The advent of minimally invasive surgery, which allows renal preservation in selected patients, makes accurate tumor staging mandatory to determine the appropriate therapy; staging is usually performed with computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Vigilant urologic and radiologic follow-up is warranted to assess for metachronous lesions and recurrence. The emerging technique of CT urography allows detection of urinary tract tumors and calculi, assessment of perirenal tissues, and staging of lesions; it may offer the opportunity for one-stop evaluation in the initial assessment of hematuria and in follow-up of TCC. Similar MR imaging protocols can be used in patients who are not candidates for CT urography, although detection of urinary tract calcifications may be suboptimal.

Renal magnetic resonance imaging

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Current magnetic resonance imaging systems allow the visualization of normal and diseased kidney, with exquisite resolution of renal structures. Dynamic contrast magnetic resonance imaging has the potential, unique among all noninvasive modalities, to differentiate diseases that affect different portions of the vascular-nephron system. This article reviews the most important recently published studies in selected topics chosen because of their clinical relevance or potential for technical developments.

RECENT FINDINGS

Magnetic resonance imaging is used increasingly to evaluate renal masses, the prenatal genitourinary system, urinary obstruction and infection, renal vasculature, and the kidneys of transplant donors and recipients. Dynamic contrast magnetic resonance renography based on gadolinium chelated to diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid, a safe (non-nephrotoxic) paramagnetic agent, emerges as the functional renal imaging modality of choice. Both perfusion and filtration rates can be assessed in individual kidney.

SUMMARY

Magnetic resonance imaging has the potential to provide a complete anatomic, physiologic, kidney-specific evaluation. With future advances in automated image analysis methods we can expect functional renal magnetic resonance imaging to play an influential role in management of renal disease.

MR evaluation of solid renal masses

After diagnosis of a suspicious renal mass on ultrasound or CT, renal MR imaging typically is ordered to characterize the mass further, stage the mass, or resolve discordant ultrasound and CT results. MR imaging may also be ordered in cases in which ultrasound is poor or in instances in which contrast-enhanced CT may be ill advised.
