Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent randomized phase III trials have demonstrated the efficacy of anti-programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in treating patients with recurrent or metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (RMHNSCC). However, a large proportion of such patients still have poor response. This study aimed to identify biomarkers for predicting anti-PD-1 ICI treatment outcomes . METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 144 patients with RMHNSCC who received anti-PD-1 ICIs after progression to platinum-based chemotherapy between January 2017 and December 2022 at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Data on clinicopathological parameters, albumin levels, calcium levels, and other pretreatment peripheral blood biomarkers, including total lymphocyte count, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) were collected and correlated with the treatment outcome of anti-PD-1 ICIs. RESULTS Low tumor proportion score (TPS), low combined positive score (CPS), NLR ≥ 5, PLR ≥ 300, hypercalcemia, hypoalbuminemia, and PNI < 45 were significantly correlated with poor response of ICIs. The overall response rates were 25% and 3% in patients with calcium < 10 mg/dL and calcium ≥ 10 mg/dL, respectively (P = 0.007). The overall response rates were 6% and 33% in patients with albumin < 4 g/dL and albumin ≥ 4 g/dL, respectively (P < 0.001). Univariate survival analysis showed that low TPS, low CPS, NLR ≥ 5,, hypercalcemia, hypoalbuminemia, and PNI < 45 were significantly associated with worse progression-free survival (PFS) and inferior overall survival (OS). Multivariate analysis revealed that calcium ≥ 10 mg/dL and albumin < 4 g/dL were independent poor prognosticators for worse PFS and inferior OS. The two-year OS rates were 26% and 9% in patients with calcium < 10 mg/dL and ≥ 10 mg/dL, respectively (P < 0.001). The two-year OS rates were 10% and 33% in patients with albumin < 4 g/dL and ≥ 4 g/dL, respectively (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Hypercalcemia and hypoalbuminemia can potentially predict poor treatment outcomes of anti-PD-1 ICIs in patients with RMHNSCC. Blood calcium and albumin levels may be helpful in individualizing treatment strategies for patients with RMHNSCC.

Abstract
To improve outcomes, to decrease the rate of local recurrence and development of distant metastases neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapies are employed in cancer patients in forms of radiation, chemo-, endocrine-, targeted-, and immunotherapy or their combination. Nutrition therapy plays important role in all phases of the cancer journey. From neoadjuvant therapy to prehabilitation, early postoperative nutrition, and long-term nutrition care during the adjuvant phase and survivorship determines the survival and quality of life of cancer patients. During the neoadjuvant phase patients may be in poor nutritional condition which can be aggravated by the applied oncological treatment. Beside this apparent threat this period also gives an excellent opportunity to maintain or even improve the nutritional status of the patients by nutrition therapy. After surgery the burdening effects of the operation may jeopardize the execution of adjuvant therapy. After early postoperative feeding a long-term nutrition strategy should be developed for cancer patients in order to avoid nutritional deterioration during the usually lengthy postoperative therapy. In this narrative review we discuss how preoperative nutritional status and medical nutrition therapy influence the results of surgery and after the operation what is the available evidence about nutritional status and outcome and the potentials to influence them by nutrition therapy.

Abstract
PURPOSE The present study aimed to develop a nomogram to predict the prognosis of patients with secondary bone tumors in the intensive care unit to facilitate risk stratification and treatment planning. METHODS We used the MIMIC IV 2.0 (the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV) to retrieve patients with secondary bone tumors as a study cohort. To evaluate the predictive ability of each characteristic on patient mortality, stepwise Cox regression was used to screen variables, and the selected variables were included in the final Cox proportional hazard model. Finally, the performance of the model was tested using the decision curve, calibration curve, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULTS A total of 1028 patients were enrolled after excluding cases with missing information. In the training cohort, albumin, APSIII (Acute Physiology Score III), chemotherapy, lactate, chloride, hepatic metastases, respiratory failure, SAPSII (Simplified Acute Physiology Score II), and total protein were identified as independent risk factors for patient death and then incorporated into the final model. The model showed good and robust prediction performance. CONCLUSION We developed a nomogram prognostic model for patients with secondary bone tumors in the intensive care unit, which provides effective survival prediction information.

Abstract
Several inflammation scores have shown association with survival outcomes for patients with neuroendocrine tumours (NET) treated with peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT). However, whether these scores add value to established prognostic factors remains unknown. In this retrospective, cohort study of 557 NET patients undergoing PRRT in a tertiary referral centre from 2005 to 2015, we examined inflammatory markers and scores previously associated with cancer outcomes, using Cox proportional hazard models and Akaike's information criterion. Lower albumin (hazard ratio [95% confidence interval], .91 [.87-.95] per unit), as well as higher C-reactive protein (CRP; 1.02 [1.01-1.02]), Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS; 1 vs. 0: 1.67 [1.14-2.44], 2 vs. 0 3.60 [2.24-5.79]), CRP/albumin ratio (1.84 [1.43-2.37]) and platelet count (Plt) × CRP, but not white blood cell, neutrophil and thrombocyte counts or derived neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (dNLR), were associated with shorter median overall survival (OS) in an adjusted analysis. The addition of parameters based on albumin and CRP, but not dNLR, to a base model including age, chromogranin A, the cell proliferation marker Ki-67, performance status, tumour site and previous treatments improved the predictive accuracy of the base model. In an exploratory analysis of patients with available erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and CRP, ESR emerged as the most powerful predictor. When added to a prognostic model for OS in NET patients treated with PRRT, most inflammation scores further improved the model. Albumin was the single marker adding most value to the set of established prognostic markers, whereas dNLR did not seem to improve the model's prognostic ability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prognostic nutritional index has been found to be related to the clinical outcomes of patients with cancer. However, its role in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) patients is unclear. We aimed to assess the value of nutritional status in predicting the prognosis of MDS patients. METHODS Totally 121 MDS patients were analyzed retrospectively. The prognostic nutritional index (PNI) was used to assess nutritional status of the patients. The bio-informatics tool X-tile was used to define the threshold, and accordingly patients were divided into PNIlow and PNIhigh groups, the characteristics were compared between two groups. RESULTS The PNIhigh was associated with better OS (Overall Survival) than PNIlow in MDS patients (Median OS, 28.03 months versus 19.63 months, P = 0.0205). But there were no statistical differences in PFS (Progression-Free-Survival) between the two groups (P = 0.9373). The univariable and multivariable COX proportional hazard analysis adjusted for age, gender, platelet count, HB level and IPSS-R scores, and the results showed that PNI is a useful index in the evaluation of the OS of MDS (HR 0.588, 95%CI 0.374-0.926, P = 0.024). CONCLUSION PNI would be a simple and immediately available tool for predicting the prognosis of MDS.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS Advanced schistosomiasis is the late stage of schistosomiasis, seriously jeopardizing the quality of life or lifetime of infected people. This study aimed to develop a nomogram for predicting mortality of patients with advanced schistosomiasis japonica, taking Dongzhi County of China as a case study. METHOD Data of patients with advanced schistosomiasis japonica were collected from Dongzhi Schistosomiasis Hospital from January 2019 to July 2022. Data of patients were randomly divided into a training set and validation set with a ratio of 7:3. Candidate variables, including survival outcomes, demographics, clinical features, laboratory examinations, and ultrasound examinations, were analyzed and selected by LASSO logistic regression for the nomogram. The performance of the nomogram was assessed by concordance index (C-index), sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV). The calibration of the nomogram was evaluated by the calibration plots, while clinical benefit was evaluated by decision curve and clinical impact curve analysis. RESULTS A total of 628 patients were included in the final analysis. Atrophy of the right liver, creatinine, ascites level III, N-terminal procollagen III peptide, and high-density lipoprotein were selected as parameters for the nomogram model. The C-index, sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of the nomogram were 0.97 (95% [CI]: [0.95-0.99]), 0.78 (95% [CI]: [0.64-0.87]), 0.97 (95% [CI]: [0.94-0.98]), 0.78 (95% [CI]: [0.64-0.87]), 0.97 (95% [CI]: [0.94-0.98]) in the training set; and 0.98 (95% [CI]: [0.94-0.99]), 0.86 (95% [CI]: [0.64-0.96]), 0.97 (95% [CI]: [0.93-0.99]), 0.79 (95% [CI]: [0.57-0.92]), 0.98 (95% [CI]: [0.94-0.99]) in the validation set, respectively. The calibration curves showed that the model fitted well between the prediction and actual observation in both the training set and validation set. The decision and the clinical impact curves showed that the nomogram had good clinical use for discriminating patients with high risk of death. CONCLUSIONS A nomogram was developed to predict prognosis of advanced schistosomiasis. It could guide clinical staff or policy makers to formulate intervention strategies or efficiently allocate resources against advanced schistosomiasis.

Abstract
Background: The albumin levels may potentially be used as a prognostic biomarker in patients with cancertreated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) due to its close relationship with nutritional and inflammatory status. However, the available data is limited with heterogeneous patient cohorts, sample sizes and variable cut-offs. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the association between survival outcomes and albumin levels in patients treated with ICIs. Methods: We conducted a systematic review using the PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases to filter the published studies up to 1 June 2022. The meta-analyses were performed with the generic inverse-variance method with a random-effects model due to the high degree of heterogeneity. The primary outcome measure was hazard ratio (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). The study protocol was registered with the PROSPERO registry (Registration Number: CRD42022337746). Results: Thirty-six studies encompassing 8406 cancer patients with advanced disease were included in the meta-analyses. Almost half of the studies were conducted in NSCLC cohorts (n = 15), and 3.5 gr/dL was the most frequently used albumin cut-off in the included studies (n = 20). Patients with lower albumin levels had a significantly increased risk of death (HR: 1.65, 95% CI: 1.52-1.80, p < 0.0001) than patients with higher albumin levels. Subgroup analyses for study location, sample size, tumor type and albumin cut-off were demonstrated consistent results. Furthermore, in the subgroup analysis of eight studies using albumin levels as a continuous prognostic factor, every 1 gr/dL decrease in albumin levels was associated with significantly increased risk of death by a factor of 10% (HR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.05-1.16, p = 0.0002). Similar to analyses with overall survival, the patients with lower albumin levels had an increased risk of progression or death compared to patients with higher albumin levels (HR: 1.76, 95% CI: 1.40-2.21, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The available evidence demonstrates that albumin levels may be a prognostic biomarker in advanced cancer patients treated with ICIs. Further research is needed to delineate the role of albumin levels in patients treated with ICIs in the adjuvant setting, as well as the possible benefit of therapeutic approaches to improve hypoalbuminemia.

Abstract
Background Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a heterogeneous spectrum of clonal hematopoietic disorders with varying degrees of cytopenia and morphologic dysplasia. The controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score, an easy-to-use tool for assessing the nutritional status, was reported as an independent prognostic factor in cancer patients. However, its role in patients with MDS is unclear. Objective We aimed to explore the impact of CONUT score on the prognosis of patients with MDS, which is of great significance for clinical treatment. Methods A total of 121 patients with MDS were analyzed. The CONUT score was calculated prior to therapy. The bio-informatics tool X-tile was used to define the CONUT score and the threshold of 4 points was determined to predict the prognosis. Patients were divided into CONUTlow and CONUThigh groups, and the characteristics were compared between two groups. Results Results show that CONUTlow was associated with better overall survival (OS) than CONUThigh patients (Median OS, 30.20 vs. 19.63 months, p = 0.0003). However, there were no statistical differences in progression-free survival (PFS) between the two groups (p = 0.2683). Results of univariate and multivariate COX proportional hazard analysis adjusted for bone marrow blasts level, platelet count, International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS) scores, gender, and hemoglobin (Hb) level showed that the CONUT score was useful in the evaluation standard of OS of MDS (hazard ratio (HR) 2.297, 95% CI 1.441–3.663, p < 0.001). Conclusions The CONUT, as a novel immuno-nutritional biomarker, may be useful in predicting the OS of MDS.

Abstract
Background Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) combined with chemotherapy have been widely employed to improve the outcome of gastric cancer patients. In the present study, the impact of posttreatment growth hormone (GH) levels on the treatment efficacy of ICIs for advanced gastric cancer (AGC) patients was assessed. Methods Seventy-five AGC patients treated with anti-PD-1 antibodies at The Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University were involved. We divided AGC patients into two groups as high-GH group and low-GH group based on the GH level. Immunotherapy efficacy was assessed in terms of objective response rate, disease control rate (DCR), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) based on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines. The enumeration data were compared by χ2 test or Fisher’s exact test. Survival curves were drawn by the Kaplan–Meier method, and comparisons between the curves were made using the log-rank test. Multivariate survival analysis was performed using a Cox proportional hazards model. Results The higher GH levels were associated with a lower DCR of ICIs with a DCR of 30.0% in the high-GH group and 53.3% in the low-GH group (P = 0.046). The subsequent univariate analysis showed that a high GH level was associated with both shorter PFS (P = 0.016) and shorter OS at the borderline statistical level (P = 0.052) in AGC patients treated with ICIs. Cox model analysis also proved that the GH level was an independent risk factor for the outcome of AGC patients (PFS: P = 0.013, HR, 2.424, 95% CI, 1.202–4.890; OS: P = 0.014, HR, 3.301, 95% CI, 1.279–8.519). Conclusions The post-treatment GH level might be a predictor for ICIs treatment in AGC patients.
