Abstract
Background We aimed to evaluate the level of knowledge, awareness, and perceptions regarding osteoporosis (OP) and risk factors in China. Methods The databases of PubMed, Medline, Embase, Web of science, VIP, and CNKI were searched for papers published before December 2022 using Chinese and English keywords and their combinations: "knowledge", "osteoporosis", "risk factor", "bone health", "perception", "awareness". The levels of knowledge, awareness, and perception about OP, as well as risk factors, clinical symptoms, and health information sources were narratively synthesized. Results Sixteen papers were finally included for analysis. Participants all showed poor levels of knowledge and perception regarding osteoporosis and risk factors. Investigation of clinical symptoms was rarely involved in the included studies due to the asymptomatic features of OP. The findings also suggest a strong association between poor level of knowledge regarding OP and educational attainment, type of participant, and gender. The majority of participants are increasingly turning to the Internet and social media to access information about OP. Conclusion The findings of this paper provide useful information for intervention providers to prevent and control OP and encourage them to carry out health promotion campaigns to enhance knowledge and awareness of OP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The number and proportion of the elderly population have been continuously increasing in China, leading to the elevated prevalence of chronic diseases and multimorbidity, which ultimately brings heavy burden to society and families. Meanwhile, the status of multimorbidity tends to be more complex in elderly inpatients than community population. In view of the above concerns, this study was designed to investigate the health status of elderly inpatients by analyzing clinical data in Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) General Hospital from 2008 to 2019, including the constitution of common diseases, comorbidities, the status of multimorbidity, in-hospital death and polypharmacy among elderly inpatients, so as to better understand the diseases spectrum and multimorbidity of elderly inpatients and also to provide supporting evidence for targeted management of chronic diseases in the elderly. METHODS A clinical inpatients database was set up by collecting medical records of elderly inpatients from 2008 to 2019 in Chinese PLA General Hospital, focusing on diseases spectrum and characteristics of elderly inpatients. In this study, we collected data of inpatients aged ≥ 65 years old, and further analyzed the constitution of diseases, multimorbidity rates and mortality causes in the past decade. In addition, the prescriptions were also analyzed to investigate the status of polypharmacy in elderly inpatients. RESULTS A total of 210,169 elderly patients were hospitalized from January 1st, 2008 to December 31st, 2019. The corresponding number of hospitalizations was 290,833. The average age of the study population was 72.67 years old. Of the total population, 73,493 elderly patients were re-admitted within one year, with the re-hospitalization rate of 25.27%. Malignant tumor, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, diabetes mellitus and cerebrovascular disease were the top 5 diseases. Among the study population, the number of patients with two or more long-term health conditions was 267,259, accounting for 91.89%, with an average of 4.68 diseases. In addition, the average number of medications taken by the study population was 5.4, among which, the proportion of patients taking more than 5 types of medications accounted for 55.42%. CONCLUSIONS By analyzing the constitution of diseases and multimorbidity, we found that multimorbidity has turned out to be a prominent problem in elderly inpatients, greatly affecting the process of healthy aging and increasing the burden on families and society. Therefore, multidisciplinary treatment should be strengthened to make reasonable preventive and therapeutic strategies to improve the life quality of the elderly. Meanwhile, more attention should be paid to reasonable medications for elderly patients with multimorbidity to avoid preventable side effects caused by irrational medication therapy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Current research evaluating the association between tea consumption and bone health still has inconsistent findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS The electronic databases of Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were systematically searched from inception until December 2022 to identify eligible studies. The calculation of summary relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) was carried out using random-effects models. I2 statistics and Forest plots were used to assess the heterogeneity of RR values across studies. RESULTS The pooled relative risks for bone health-related outcomes of interest among tea drinkers, compared to non-drinkers, were 0.910 (95% confidence interval 0.845 to 0.980) for fractures, based on 20 studies, 0.332 (0.207-0.457) for BMD (13 studies), 0.800 (0.674-0.950) for osteoporosis (10 studies), and 1.006 (0.876-1.156) for osteopenia (5 studies). Subgroup analysis of locations showed that the pooled relative risks were 0.903 (0.844-0.966) for the hip, 0.735 (0.586-0.922) for the femur, 0.776 (0.610-0.988) for the lumbar, 0.980 (0.942-1.021) for the forearm and wrist, 0.804 (0.567-1.139) for the phalanges, and 0.612 (0.468-0.800) for Ward's triangle. One-stage dose-response analysis revealed that individuals who consumed less than 4.5 cups of tea per day had a lower risk of bone health-related outcomes than those who did not consume tea, with statistically significant results. CONCLUSION There is an association between tea consumption and a reduced risk of fractures, osteoporosis, hip, femur, and lumbar, as well as increased BMD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The specific risk factors contributing to the development of osteoporosis and the appropriate timing of treatment in Chinese prostate cancer (PCa) patients remain unclear. Our objective was to develop and validate a nomogram capable of predicting the occurrence of osteoporosis in PCa patients. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study with PCa patients attending the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University, collecting data from June 2021 to February 2023. The patients were divided into training and validation sets in a 7:3 ratio. The LASSO regression was used to identify the most relevant predictive variables, and the multivariable logistic regression was used to construct the nomogram. The nomogram's performance was validated through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, C-index, calibration curves, and decision curve analysis (DCA) in both the training and validation sets. RESULTS We collected data from a total of 596 patients and then constructed the nomogram using age, body mass index, hemoglobin, vitamin D3, testosterone, and androgen deprivation therapy duration. The C-index of the nomogram was 0.923 in the training set and 0.859 in the validation set. The nomogram showed good consistency in both sets. DCA demonstrated the clinical benefit of the nomogram across various prediction thresholds. Furthermore, a separate nomogram was constructed to predict bone loss in patients undergoing ADT, exhibiting equally favorable diagnostic performance and clinical benefit. CONCLUSION This study constructed two reliable nomograms to predict osteoporosis and bone loss, integrating personal health information and PCa-specific treatment data. These nomograms offer an easy and individualized approach to predict the occurrence of osteoporosis and bone loss in PCa patients.

Abstract
With the growing awareness of a healthy life, tea pigments (TPGs) are in focus for their health benefits. TPGs not only provide specific color to tea liquor but also possess health benefits such as anti-obesity, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-oxidative, and bacteriostatic properties. Also, TPGs can benefit bone, liver, kidney, cardiovascular, gut microbiome, and sleep health. Based on previous reports, this review provides a brief introduction to the health benefits of TPGs, focusing on the prevention of human diseases and the protection of organs. Also, the latest research on the functional mechanism(s), practical application, and development strategies of TPGs is discussed.

Abstract
Breast cancer is a significant global health concern, and the discovery of endocrine therapy has played a crucial role in the treatment of estrogen-positive breast cancer. However, these therapies are often associated with osteoporosis-related adverse events, which increase the risk of fractures in breast cancer patients and can result in limited mobility and reduced quality of life. Previous studies have shown that osteoporosis is essential side effects of the breast cancer therapy, although the exact mechanisms remain mostly unclear. Current clinical treatments, such as bisphosphonates, cause side effects and may impact the therapeutic response to endocrine drugs. In this review, we explore the likelihood of endocrine therapy-induced osteoporosis in estrogen-positive breast cancer therapy and discuss the involved mechanisms as well as the therapeutic potential of drugs and drug combination strategies.

Abstract
Supplemental n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on bone metabolism have yielded inconsistent results. This study aimed to examine the effects of n-3 PUFA supplementation on bone metabolism markers and bone mineral density through a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. A systematic literature search was conducted using the PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCO databases, updated to 1 March 2023. The intervention effects were measured as standard mean differences (SMD) and mean differences (MD). Additionally, n-3 PUFA with the untreated control, placebo control, or lower-dose n-3 PUFA supplements were compared, respectively. Further, 19 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (22 comparisons, n = 2546) showed that n-3 PUFA supplementation significantly increased blood n-3 PUFA (SMD: 2.612; 95% CI: 1.649 to 3.575). However, no significant effects were found on BMD, CTx-1, NTx-1, BAP, serum calcium, 25(OH)D, PTH, CRP, and IL-6. Subgroup analyses showed significant increases in femoral neck BMD in females (0.01, 95% CI: 0.01 to 0.02), people aged <60 years (0.01, 95% CI: 0.01 to 0.01), and those people in Eastern countries (0.02, 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.03), and for 25(OH)D in people aged ≥60 years (0.43, 95% CI: 0.11 to 0.74), treated with n-3 PUFA only (0.36, 95% CI: 0.06 to 0.66), and in studies lasting ≤6 months (0.29, 95% CI: 0.11 to 0.47). NTx-1 decreased in both genders (-9.66, 95% CI: -15.60 to -3.71), and serum calcium reduction was found in studies lasting >6 months (-0.19, 95% CI: -0.37 to -0.01). The present study demonstrated that n-3 PUFA supplementation might not have a significant effect on bone mineral density or bone metabolism markers, but have some potential benefits for younger postmenopausal subjects in the short term. Therefore, additional high-quality, long-term randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are warranted to fully elucidate the potential benefits of n-3 PUFA supplementation, as well as the combined supplementation of n-3 PUFA, on bone health.

Abstract
UNLABELLED To elucidate the association of coffee and bone health would help fracture risk reduction via dietary intervention. Although those who had higher coffee consumption were less likely to have osteoporosis, the associations between coffee consumption and fracture risk need further investigations with better study designs. INTRODUCTION The associations between coffee consumption and the risk of osteoporosis and fracture remain inconclusive. We aimed to better quantify these associations by conducting meta-analyses of observational studies. METHODS Relevant studies were systematically searched on PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane library, and Embase Database up to November 25, 2021. The odds ratio (OR) or relative risk (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was pooled and a dose-response analysis was performed. RESULTS Four studies with 7114 participants for osteoporosis and thirteen studies with 391,956 participants for fracture incidence were included in the meta-analyses. High versus low coffee consumption was associated with a lower risk of osteoporosis [pooled OR (95% CI): 0.79 (0.65-0.92)], while it was non-significantly associated with fracture incidence [pooled OR (95% CI): 0.86 (0.67-1.05) at hip and 0.89 (0.42-1.36) at non-hip]. A non-linear association between the level of coffee consumption and hip fracture incidence was shown (P = 0.004). The pooled RR (95% CI) of hip fracture risk in those who consumed 1, 2-3, 4, and ≥ 9 cups of coffee per day was 0.92 (0.87-0.97), 0.89 (0.83-0.95), 0.91 (0.85-0.98), and 1.10 (0.76-1.59), respectively. The significance in the association between coffee consumption and the hip fracture incidence decreased in those studies that had larger sample size, higher quality, and more adjustments. CONCLUSIONS A dose-dependent relationship may exist between coffee consumption and hip fracture incidence. The effect of high versus low coffee consumption was influenced by study designs. Further studies with dedicated designs are needed to confirm the independent effects of coffee consumption on bone health.

Abstract
Few studies compared the effects of non-fermented and fermented tea among the general population. We aimed to compare the risk of incident osteoporosis (OP) between non-fermented tea and fermented tea drinkers by this retrospective nationwide population-based analysis from the Taiwan Biobank. Participants ≥ 40 years who drink fermented tea (n = 2205) were compared with those who drink non-fermented tea (n = 1034) from 2008 to 2015 with a mean follow-up period of 3.64 years. OP was defined by T-score ≤ − 2.5. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models were performed to estimate the risk of developing OP between the two groups. Separate models were used to determine the relationship between tea consumption and OP stratified by sex and age. There was a significant interaction between sex, age, and type of tea consumed. In men aged ≥ 60 years, the risk of developing OP decreased by 79% for those who drank non-fermented tea (hazard ratio, 0.21; 95% confidence level, 0.05–0.94) than those who drank fermented tea. Additionally, those with a family history of OP had a higher risk of developing osteoporosis. This study suggests that male elderly who consume non-fermented tea have a lower risk of OP. Drinking non-fermented tea, such as green tea, could be suggested, especially for those with a family history of osteoporosis.

Abstract
Background More than one-third of the total world population is infected by Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii). T. gondii has been linked to various diseases, such as cancer, mental disorders, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), etc. However, the effects of T. gondii infection on the risk of osteoporosis are unclear. Our study aimed to uncover evidence to determine whether patients exposed to T. gondii have an increased or decreased risk of osteoporosis in people with abnormal bone mineral density (BMD) by using case–control study. Methods A total of 729 patients, including 316 osteopenia and 413 osteoporosis patients of Han Chinese ancestry were selected in the study. Their blood samples were collected and the levels of specific IgG antibodies against T. gondii were measured using ELISA assay. We obtained some information about the patients from the medical record that included demographic indexes and clinical data. A logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the effects of T. gondii infection on femur osteoporosis, lumbar osteoporosis and compound osteoporosis. Potential interaction was analyzed using multifactor dimensionality reduction software 1.0.0 (MDR 1.0.0). Results 113 positive patients with T. gondii infections have been detected, including 80 cases of osteoporosis and 33 cases of osteopenia, the infection rates of T. gondii were 19.37% (80/413) and 10.44% (33/316), respectively. The patients with T.gondii infections were at a 2.60 times higher risk of suffering from compound osteoporosis than those without T. gondii infections (OR = 2.60, 95% CI 1.54–4.39, P < 0.001), but not associated with femur osteoporosis (OR = 1.01, 95% CI 0.43–2.34, P = 0.989) and lumbar osteoporosis (OR = 0.84, 95% CI 0.34–2.07, P = 0.705) after adjusting for the covariates. Moreover, a significantly higher risk of compound osteoporosis in the individuals with all two factors (T. gondii infection, Female) was observed compared with reference group (without T. gondii infection, male) under the interaction model (OR = 11.44, 95%CI = 5.44–24.05, P < 0.001). And the individuals with all two factors (T. gondii infection, over 70 years) exhibited a 8.14-fold higher possibility of developing compound osteoporosis compared with reference group (without T. gondii infection, under 70 years) (OR = 8.14, 95% CI 3.91–16.93, P < 0.001). We further stratified by age and sex, and found that women with T. gondii infection was more likely to develop compound osteoporosis than those without infection(OR = 3.12, 95% CI 1.67–5.81, P < 0.001), but we not found the association between T. gondii infection and compound osteoporosis in males (OR = 1.36, 95% CI 0.37–4.94, P = 0.645). Conclusions T. gondii infection is a risk factor for osteoporosis, especially compound osteoporosis. Meanwhile, it is very necessary for patients with osteoporosis to further diagnose and treat T. gondii infection, especially women. Graphical Abstract ![]()

Abstract
UNLABELLED Individuals with low socio-economic status (SES) have a more than 25% higher risk of fragility fractures than individuals with high SES. Body mass index and lifestyle appear to mediate the effect of SES on fracture risk. Strategies to prevent fractures should aim to reduce unhealthy behaviours through tackling structural inequalities. INTRODUCTION This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the impact of socio-economic status (SES) on fragility fracture risk. METHODS Medline, Embase, and CINAHL databases were searched from inception to 28 April 2021 for studies reporting an association between SES and fragility fracture risk among individuals aged ≥50 years. Risk ratios (RR) were combined in meta-analyses using random restricted maximum likelihood models, for individual-based (education, income, occupation, cohabitation) and area-based (Index of Multiple Deprivation, area income) SES measures. RESULTS A total of 61 studies from 26 different countries including more than 19 million individuals were included. Individual-based low SES was associated with an increased risk of fragility fracture (RR 1.27 [95% CI 1.12, 1.44]), whilst no clear association was seen when area-based measures were used (RR 1.08 [0.91, 1.30]). The strength of associations was influenced by the type and number of covariates included in statistical models: RR 2.69 [1.60, 4.53] for individual-based studies adjusting for age, sex and BMI, compared with RR 1.06 [0.92, 1.22] when also adjusted for health behaviours (smoking, alcohol, and physical activity). Overall, the quality of the evidence was moderate. CONCLUSION Our results show that low SES, measured at the individual level, is a risk factor for fragility fracture. Low BMI and unhealthy behaviours are important mediators of the effect of SES on fracture risk. Strategies to prevent fractures and reduce unhealthy behaviours should aim to tackle structural inequalities in society thereby reducing health inequalities in fragility fracture incidence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoporosis is one of the most common bone system diseases that is associated with an increased risk of bone fractures and causes many complications for patients. With age, the prevalence of this disease increases so that it has become a serious problem among the elders. In this study, the prevalence of osteoporosis among elders around the world is examined to gain an understanding of its prevalence pattern. METHODS In this systematic review and meta-analysis, articles that have focused on prevalence of osteoporosis in the world's elders were searched with these key words, such as Prevalence, Osteoporosis, Elders, Older adult in the Science Direct, Embase, Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science (WoS) databases and Google Scholar search engine, and extracted without time limit until March 2020 and transferred to information management software (EndNote). Then, duplicate studies were eliminated and the remaining studies were evaluated in terms of screening, competence and qualitative evaluation based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data analysis was performed with Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (Version 2) and Begg and Mazumdar test was used to check the publication bias and I2 test was used to check the heterogeneity. RESULTS In a review of 40 studies (31 studies related to Asia, 5 studies related to Europe and 4 studies related to America) with a total sample size of 79,127 people, the prevalence of osteoporosis in the elders of the world; 21.7% (95% confidence interval: 18.8-25%) and the overall prevalence of osteoporosis in older men and women in the world, 35.3% (95% confidence interval: 27.9-43.4%), 12.5% (95% confidence interval: 9.3-16.7%) was reported. Also, the highest prevalence of osteoporosis in the elders was reported in Asia with; 24.3% (95% confidence interval: 20.9-28.1%). CONCLUSION The results of the present study showed that the prevalence of osteoporosis in the elders and especially elders' women is very high. Osteoporosis was once thought to be an inseparable part of elders' lives. Nowadays, Osteoporosis can be prevented due to significant scientific advances in its causes, diagnosis, and treatment. Regarding the growing number of elderly people in the world, it is necessary for health policy-makers to think of measures to prevent and treat osteoporosis among the elders.

Abstract
Low bone mineral density (BMD) was significantly related to the fracture of distal radius. Serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) level was closely related to BMD in spine and osteoporotic fractures. In this study, we aimed to explore the association of BDNF polymorphisms (rs6265 and rs7124442) with BMD and the fracture of distal radius.This retrospective study included 152 patients with distal radius fractures and 148 healthy controls. BDNF polymorphisms were detected via TaqMan allelic discrimination assay. BMD was evaluated through X-ray. Difference in features between cases and controls were compared adopting Chi-square test or t test. The associations of BDNF polymorphisms with fracture risk of distal radius and BMD were assessed employing χ2 test and expressed by odd ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs).BMD was significantly decreased in patients with the fracture of distal radius than in healthy controls. The polymorphism rs6265 significantly increased the risk of distal radius fracture (adjustment: GA: OR = 1.724, 95%CI = 1.003 -2.951, P = .049; GG: OR = 2.415, 95%CI = 1.0219 -3.674, P = .005). Moreover, rs6265 genotypes GA (OR = 4.326, 95%CI = 1.725 -11.896, P = .003) and GG (OR = 13.285, 95%CI = 3.659 -51.072, P = .001) significantly increased BMD reduction. However, BDNF polymorphism rs7124442 had no obvious correlation with BMD or fracture risk.BMD was associated with BDNF rs6265 polymorphism. Abstract
Patients suffering from Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are at higher risk of osteoporosis due to lower bone mineral density. Risk factors of osteoporosis are divided into unmodifiable, namely, age, gender, genetic factors, as well as modifiable, including diet, level of physical activity, and the use of stimulants. Coffee and tea contain numerous compounds affecting bone metabolism. Certain substances such as antioxidants may protect bones; other substances may increase bone resorption. Nevertheless, the influence of coffee and tea on the development and course of inflammatory bowel diseases is contradictory.

Is there an association between peptic ulcer disease and osteoporosis: a systematic review and cumulative analysis. Eur J Gastroenterol Hepatol 2021; 33:9-16. Abstract
BACKGROUND Mounting studies have emerged indicating that patients with peptic ulcer disease (PUD) are at a high risk of developing osteoporosis, but the evidence has not been previously synthesized. The present study aims to examine whether patients with PUD have a significantly higher prevalence of osteoporosis than the healthy normal subjects. METHODS Four electronic databases were systematically searched for eligible studies up to February 2020. The association between PUD and osteoporosis was evaluated by calculating the relative risk (RR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS Six observational studies were finally included, enrolling a total of 216 122 individuals. Synthetic results from the six included studies providing the number of cases for both sexes demonstrated that PUD was significantly associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis (95% CI, 1.37-1.89; P < 0.001). In line with this finding, the combined effect from the three studies independently reporting the male subjects also yielded to a positive relationship between PUD and osteoporosis (RR = 2.08; 95% CI,1.10-3.93; P = 0.023). However, when restricted to female participants, pooled results indicated that women patients with PUD would not suffer significantly more risk of osteoporosis than the general women population (RR = 1.36; 95% CI, 0.84-2.21, P = 0.212). CONCLUSIONS This is the first study for quantifying the positive association between PUD and the risk of osteoporosis by conducting a meta-analysis. In clinical practice, assessment of the bone mineral density and antiosteoporosis treatments are recommended for those potential patients with PUD.
