GIS-based spatial analysis for lightning scenario in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has witnessed alarmingly rising lightning frequency, particularly during pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons. This has resulted in significant annual death tolls from lightning strikes over the past decade. Recognizing this crisis, the country officially declared lightning casualties a natural disaster in 2016. This study delves deeper into the landscape of lightning fatalities and causalities in Bangladesh. Utilizing secondary data sources, this research introduces a unique approach by integrating Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) data and NASA's Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) data from the International Space Station's (ISS) Near-real Time (NRT) mission. This combined dataset allows for a more comprehensive analysis. Furthermore, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was employed to analyze spatial distributions and generate maps. The Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) interpolation tool was used to create detailed spatial distribution maps of lightning fatalities, thunderstorm days (TSDs), and lightning flash frequency (LFF) across Bangladesh. The analysis revealed that farmers and fishermen were the most vulnerable populations, with the northeastern regions experiencing the highest impact. Sylhet division emerged as the area with the most fatalities, highlighting the northeastern zone's susceptibility. The study also identified monsoons as the period with the highest occurrences of lightning deaths and injuries. By combining innovative data integration and spatial analysis, this study offers valuable insights into the alarming trend of lightning fatalities in Bangladesh. These findings can inform targeted prevention strategies and interventions to safeguard vulnerable populations and communities.

The Report of Lightning in Himalayan Locale

A few normal calamities (disasters) as often as possible happen within the Himalayan locale in Nepal. The height of this locale ranges from 59 m to "8848.86 m" along the range of 160 km. As a result, there is a significant variety of temperatures within the locale. In addition, Nepal includes a heterogeneous geography. All these highlights impact different normal fiascos counting the lightning action. This report points at analyzing the varieties of lightning inside and over a long time from January 2011 to present. For this report, the information was taken from the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) portal of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA). The investigation indicated that there was no lightning occasion in November, and the lightning stroke density was higher in the premonsoon period, and the number of harmed individuals was almost three times the number of individuals passing due to the lightning.

Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices towards Lightning in Bangladesh

Despite the significant number of fatalities and injuries, there is currently a lack of data on public knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding lightning in Bangladesh. This study aims to assess the public’s knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) towards lightning in the country. A total of 1641 individuals participated in an online KAP survey. Where appropriate, the Kruskal–Wallis or Mann–Whitney U test, Spearman’s rank correlation, and logistic regression models were performed. About 65% of the survey population reported frequent lightning; most (72.64%) did not receive any warning messages, and small proportions (22.12%) had lightning safety precautions. Individuals with numerous lightning experiences perceived considerably unsafe places against lightning compared to infrequent lightning experiences (p < 0.05). Respondents reported good knowledge (56.06%), positive attitudes (82.27%), and good preventive practices (72.33%). The logistic regression demonstrated that having good knowledge and positive attitudes can help people practice lightning safety. Females demonstrated better lightning attitudes and practices compared to males. In comparison to urban residents, rural residents had poor practices. In addition, individuals’ educational levels might also play a crucial role in preparing them for lightning. Overall, extensive lightning campaign activities combined with effective education are required for the behavioral changes in this lightning-vulnerable society.

Health impacts of climate change on smallholder farmers

The health of smallholder farmers is crucial for ensuring food and nutritional security for two billion people. However, their health is in jeopardy for several reasons including challenges from climate change impacts. Using a narrative literature review supported by field observations and informal interviews with key informants in India, Bangladesh and Malawi, this paper identifies and discusses the health impacts of climate change under four categories: (i) communicable diseases, (ii) non-communicable diseases, (iii) mental health, and (iv) occupational health, safety and other health issues. The health impacts of climate change on smallholder farmers will hamper the realization of many of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, and a series of recommendations are made to regional and country governments to address the increasing health impacts of accelerating climate change among smallholder farmers.

Environmental neurology in the tropics

We address the impact of the tropical environment on the human nervous system using the multifaceted approach characteristic of environmental neurology. First, environmental factors are examined according to their nature (physical, chemical and biological) and in relation to human activity and behavior. Some factors are specific to the tropics (climate and infections), while others are non-specific (chemicals, human communities and their way of life). Second, we examine the major role of human adaptation to the success of Homo sapiens, with emphasis on the linkage between thermoregulation and sleep-wake regulation. Third, we examine the performance of environmental neurology as a clinical discipline in tropical climates, with focus on the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges posed by human African trypanosomiasis. Finally, the prevention, early detection and monitoring of environmental neurological diseases is examined, as well as links with political and economic factors. In conclusion, practitioners of environmental neurology seek a global, multidisciplinary and holistic approach to understanding, preventing and treating neurological disorders within their purview. Environmental neurology integrates an expanded One Health concept by linking health and wellness to the interaction of plants, animals, humans and the ecosystem. Recent epidemics and the current COVID-19 pandemic exemplify the need for worldwide action to protect human health and biodiversity.

A rare manifestation of burns after lightning strike in rural Ghana: a case report

Background

Lightning is a natural phenomenon that mostly affects countries in the tropical and subtropical regions of the globe, including Ghana. Lightning strikes pose a global public health issue. Although strikes to humans are uncommon, it is associated with high morbidity and mortality.

Case presentation

We present a case of a 10-year-old Ghanaian girl who got second-degree burns after being struck by lightning. She was put on an intravenous broad-spectrum antibiotic (ceftriaxone), Ringer’s lactate, and her burns were dressed with sterile gauze impregnated with Vaseline (petroleum jelly) and silver sulfadiazine ointment. There was marked improvement on the 16^th day of treatment despite the lack in capacity of the hospital to carry out some laboratory diagnostic tests. On the 21^st day of treatment, the burns were completely healed without scars and contractures.

Conclusions

This is evidence of burns due to lightning strike, despite its rare occurrence. This report will help inform those in doubt, particularly in communities where lightning injuries are associated with widespread superstition. The case report also revealed how rural healthcare can be challenging amid a lack of basic diagnostic equipment and logistics. However, in resource-limited settings, Vaseline (petroleum jelly) and silver sulfadiazine could be used in the treatment of burns.

Epidemiology of adulthood drowning deaths in Bangladesh: Findings from a nationwide health and injury survey

Background: Annual global death due to drowning accounts for 372,000 lives, 90% of which occur in low and middle income countries. Life in Bangladesh exposes adults and children to may water bodies for daily household needs, and as a result drowning is common. In Bangladesh, due to lack of systemic data collection, drowning among adults is unknown; most research is focused on childhood drowning. The aim of the present study was to explore the epidemiology of adulthood drowning deaths in Bangladesh.

Methodology: A nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted from January to December in 2003 among 171,366 rural and urban households, with a sample of 819,429 individuals to determine the epidemiology of adulthood drowning in Bangladesh.  

Results:  Annual fatal drowning incidence among adults was 5.85/100,000 individuals. Of these, 71.4% were male and 28.6% were female (RR 2.39). In total, 90% of the fatalities were from rural areas. Rural populations were also found to have a 8.58 times higher risk of drowning than those in urban areas. About 95% of drowning occurred in natural water bodies. About 61.6% of the deaths occurred at the scene followed by 33.5% at the home. Of the drowning fatalities, 67% took place in water bodies within 100 meters of the household. Among the drowning fatalities 78.4% occurred in daylight between 7.00 and 18.00. Over 97% of the victims were from poor socio economic conditions with a monthly income tk. 6,000 ($94) or less. Only 25.5% of incidences were reported to the police station.

Conclusions: Every year a significant number of adults die due to drowning in Bangladesh.  Populations living in rural areas, especially men, were the main victims of drowning. This survey finding might help policy makers and scientists to understand the drowning scenario among adults in Bangladesh.
