Abstract
BACKGROUND For decades, various agrochemicals have been successfully repurposed for mosquito control. However, preexisting resistance caused in larval and adult populations by unintentional pesticide exposure or other cross-resistance mechanisms poses a challenge to the efficacy of this strategy. A better understanding of larval adaptation to the lethal and sublethal effects of residual pesticides in aquatic habitats would provide vital information for assessing the efficacy of repurposed agrochemicals against mosquitoes. METHODS We reared field-collected mosquito larvae in water containing a concentration of agrochemical causing 100% mortality in susceptible mosquitoes after 24 h (lethal concentration). Using this experimental setup, we tested the effect of lethal concentrations of a pyrrole (chlorfenapyr, 0.10 mg/l), a pyrethroid (deltamethrin, 1.5 mg/l), and three neonicotinoids including imidacloprid (0.075 mg/l), acetamiprid (0.15 mg/l), and clothianidin (0.035 mg/l) on mortality rates, growth, and survival in third-instar larvae of the two sibling species Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles coluzzii collected from Yaoundé, Cameroon. RESULTS We found that An. gambiae and An. coluzzii larvae were susceptible to chlorfenapyr and were killed within 24 h by a nominal concentration of 0.10 mg/l. Consistent with strong resistance, deltamethrin induced low mortality in both species. Lethal concentrations of acetamiprid, imidacloprid, and clothianidin strongly inhibited survival, growth, and emergence in An. coluzzii larvae. By contrast, depending on the active ingredient and the population tested, 5-60% of immature stages of An. gambiae were able to grow and emerge in water containing a lethal concentration of neonicotinoids, suggesting cross-resistance to this class of insecticides. CONCLUSIONS These findings corroborate susceptibility profiles observed in adults and suggest that unintentional pesticide exposure or other cross-resistance processes could contribute to the development of resistance to neonicotinoids in some Anopheles populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early and exclusive breastfeeding may reduce neonatal and post-neonatal mortality in low-resource settings. However, prelacteal feeding (PLF), the practice of giving food or liquid before breastfeeding is established, is still a barrier to optimal breastfeeding practices in many South Asian countries. We used a prospective cohort study to assess the association between feeding non-breastmilk food or liquid in the first three days of life and infant size at 3-5 months of age. METHODS The analysis used data from 3,332 mother-infant pairs enrolled in a randomized controlled trial in northwestern rural Bangladesh conducted from 2018 to 2019. Trained interviewers visited women in their households during pregnancy to collect sociodemographic data. Project staff were notified of a birth by telephone and interviewers visited the home within approximately three days and three months post-partum. At each visit, interviewers collected data on breastfeeding practices and anthropometric measures. Infant length and weight measurements were used to produce length-for-age (LAZ), weight-for-age (WAZ), and weight-for-length (WLZ) Z-scores. We used multiple linear regression to assess the association between anthropometric indices and PLF practices, controlling for household wealth, maternal age, weight, education, occupation, and infant age, sex, and neonatal sizes. RESULTS The prevalence of PLF was 23%. Compared to infants who did not receive PLF, infants who received PLF may have a higher LAZ (Mean difference (MD) = 0.02 [95% CI: -0.04, 0.08]) score, a lower WLZ (MD=-0.06 [95% CI: -0.15, 0.03]) score, and a lower WAZ (MD=-0.02 [95% CI: -0.08, 0.05]) score at 3-5 months of age, but none of the differences were statistically significant. In the adjusted model, female sex, larger size during the neonatal period, higher maternal education, and wealthier households were associated with larger infant size. CONCLUSION PLF was a common practice in this setting. Although no association between PLF and infant growth was identified, we cannot ignore the potential harm posed by PLF. Future studies could assess infant size at an earlier time point, such as 1-month postpartum, or use longitudinal data to assess more subtle differences in growth trajectories with PLF. Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic exposure of mosquito larvae to pesticide residues and cross-resistance mechanisms are major drivers of tolerance to insecticides used for vector control. This presents a concern for the efficacy of clothianidin, an agricultural neonicotinoid prequalified for Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS). METHODS Using standard bioassays, we tested if reduced susceptibility to clothianidin can affect the efficacy of SumiShield® 50WG, one of four new IRS formulations containing clothianidin. We simultaneously monitored susceptibility to clothianidin and to SumiShield 50WG, testing adults of Anopheles gambiae, An. coluzzii and Culex sp sampled from urban, suburban and agricultural areas of Yaoundé, Cameroon. RESULTS We found that in this geographic area, the level of susceptibility to the active ingredient predicted the efficacy of SumiShield 50WG. This formulation was very potent against populations that reached 100% mortality within 72 h of exposure to a discriminating concentration of clothianidin. By contrast, mortality leveled off at 75.4 ± 3.5% within 7 days of exposure to SumiShield 50WG in An. gambiae adults collected from a farm where the spraying of the two neonicotinoids acetamiprid and imidacloprid for crop protection is likely driving resistance to clothianidin. CONCLUSIONS Despite the relatively small geographic extend of the study, the findings suggest that cross-resistance may impact the efficacy of some new IRS formulations and that alternative compounds could be prioritized in areas where neonicotinoid resistance is emerging.

Abstract
The first two years of life is a critical window for good nutrition. Promoting infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices in the first two years can help improve child survival and promote healthy growth and development. Assessment of IYCF practices is important, especially in developing countries like India where optimal IYCF practices can potentially prevent 12% of all deaths under 5 years of age, to promote awareness and intervene appropriately. The objective of our study is to generate evidence for the association between different types of mass media and appropriate IYCF practices in India, including optimal breastfeeding and appropriate complementary feeding practices. A positive association between them can point to intervention at scale. We analyzed data from India's National Family Health Survey 5 (NFHS-5), 2019-2021. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the association of appropriate IYCF practices with mass media exposure. After controlling for demographics and socioeconomic status, the analyses showed that, overall, women who had exposure to television followed by newspaper and movies, had higher odds of adopting the recommended IYCF practices. The results also showed that the association of media exposure varied for different IYCF practices by geography. For instance, in the rural areas, television exposure was positively associated with all the IYCF practices, but in the urban areas, television exposure was positively associated with only early initiation of breastfeeding [OR 1.25; (95% CI 1.1-1.42)]. The study strengthens our understanding that an appropriate selection of mass media channels for intervention programs can promote IYCF practices at scale. Appropriately selecting the type of mass media to create awareness about different IYCF practices, in specific urban-rural settings, could help customize intervention programs to successfully influence IYCF behaviors.

Abstract
Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a neglected mosquito-borne parasitic disease, widely caused by Wuchereria bancrofti (Wb) in tropical and sub-tropical countries. During a blood meal, the filarial nematodes are transmitted to humans by the infected mosquito. To counter attack the invaded nematodes, the human immune system produces reactive oxygen species. However, the anti-oxidant enzymes of nematodes counteract the host oxidative cytotoxicity. Cu/Zn Superoxide dismutase (SOD1), a member of antioxidant enzymes and are widely used by the nematodes to sustain the host oxidative stress across its lifecycle, hence targeting SOD1 to develop suitable drug molecules would help to overcome the problems related to efficacy and activity of drugs upon different stages of nematodes. In order to find the potent inhibitors, a three-dimensional structure of Cu/Zn WbSOD1 was modelled and the structural stability was analysed through simulation studies. The structure-guided virtual screening approach has been used to identify lead molecules from the ChemBridge based on the docking score, ADMET properties and protein-ligand complex stability analysis. The identified compounds were observed to interact with the copper, metal binding residues (His48, His63, His80 and His120) and catalytically important residue Arg146, which play a crucial role in the disproportionation of incoming superoxide radicals of Cu/Zn WbSOD1. Further, in vitro validation of the selected leads in the filarial worm Setaria digitata exhibited higher inhibition and better IC50 compared to the standard drug ivermectin. Thus, the identified leads could potentially inhibit enzyme activity, which could subsequently act as drug candidates to control LF.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
Mosquito-borne disease remains a significant burden on global health. In the United States, the major threat posed by mosquitoes is transmission of arboviruses, including West Nile virus by mosquitoes of the Culex genus. Virus metagenomic analysis of mosquito small RNA using deep sequencing and advanced bioinformatic tools enables the rapid detection of viruses and other infecting organisms, both pathogenic and non-pathogenic to humans, without any precedent knowledge. In this study, we sequenced small RNA samples from over 60 pools of Culex mosquitoes from two major areas of Southern California from 2017 to 2019 to elucidate the virome and immune responses of Culex. Our results demonstrated that small RNAs not only allowed the detection of viruses but also revealed distinct patterns of viral infection based on location, Culex species, and time. We also identified miRNAs that are most likely involved in Culex immune responses to viruses and Wolbachia bacteria, and show the utility of using small RNA to detect antiviral immune pathways including piRNAs against some pathogens. Collectively, these findings show that deep sequencing of small RNA can be used for virus discovery and surveillance. One could also conceive that such work could be accomplished in various locations across the world and over time to better understand patterns of mosquito infection and immune response to many vector-borne diseases in field samples.

Abstract
Listeria monocytogenes causes listeriosis, a disease characterized by a high mortality rate (up to 30%). Since the pathogen is highly tolerant to changing conditions (high and low temperature, wide pH range, low availability of nutrients), it is widespread in the environment, e.g., water, soil, or food. L. monocytogenes possess a number of genes that determine its high virulence potential, i.e., genes involved in the intracellular cycle (e.g., prfA, hly, plcA, plcB, inlA, inlB), response to stress conditions (e.g., sigB, gadA, caspD, clpB, lmo1138), biofilm formation (e.g., agr, luxS), or resistance to disinfectants (e.g., emrELm, bcrABC, mdrL). Some genes are organized into genomic and pathogenicity islands. The islands LIPI-1 and LIPI-3 contain genes related to the infectious life cycle and survival in the food processing environment, while LGI-1 and LGI-2 potentially ensure survival and durability in the production environment. Researchers constantly have been searching for new genes determining the virulence of L. monocytogenes. Understanding the virulence potential of L. monocytogenes is an important element of public health protection, as highly pathogenic strains may be associated with outbreaks and the severity of listeriosis. This review summarizes the selected aspects of L. monocytogenes genomic and pathogenicity islands, and the importance of whole genome sequencing for epidemiological purposes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Despite the health benefits of breastfeeding, Saudi women do not exclusively breastfeed their babies. The purpose of this article was to synthesize Saudi women's breastfeeding knowledge, attitude, and practices and identify the factors that women reported for their breastfeeding cessation. METHODOLOGY A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials and cross-sectional studies was undertaken. RESULTS Saudi women reported poor knowledge in managing breastfeeding challenges and had a positive attitude toward formula feeding. Giving premade formula and sugar water was a common practice. The breastfeeding initiation rate (31.5%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: [22%, 41.8%]) and exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months were low (15.15, 95% CI: [8%, 24%]). Perceived low milk supply, returning to work, and using contraception were the main reasons for early breastfeeding cessation. DISCUSSION The integration of Islamic, political, and economic cultures in Saudi Arabia can influence women's breastfeeding practices. There is a need for culturally appropriate breastfeeding educational programs for Saudi women.

Abstract
Although universal biometrics have been broadly called for, and there are many validated technologies to recognize adults, these technologies have been ineffective in newborns and young children. The present work describes the development and clinical testing of a fingerprint capture system for longitudinal biometric recognition of newborns and young children to support vaccination and clinical follow-up. The reader consists of a high-resolution monochromatic imaging system with an ergonomic industrial design to comfortably support and align infant fingers for imaging without a platen. This imaging approach without a platen, also called free-space imaging, reduces fingerprint distortion and ensures a more consistent finger placement. This system was tested in a newborn ward and immunization clinic at an urban hospital in Baja, California, Mexico, from 2017 to 2019. Nearly five hundred children were enrolled and followed for up to 24 months. With a protocol of imaging all ten fingers, the failure to enroll (FTE) rate was < 1% when acquiring at least two fingers for all ages and < 2% when enrolling at least four fingers. The verification (1:1) true accept rate (TAR) was 77% for newborns enrolled at ≤ 3 days of age and 96% for those enrolled at ≥ 4 days of age, both at a time gap of 15-30 days after enrollment at a false accept rate (FAR) of 0.1%. Using the top-ranked match score, the identification rate (1:many) was 86% for the ≤ 3 days enrollment age and 97% for age ≥ 4 days for a single finger at 15-30 days after enrollment. The enrollment protocol and the frequency of updating will increase for infants compared to adults. However, these data suggest that a high-resolution, free space imaging technique may fill the final gap for universal biometrics across all populations called for by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16.9.

Is Infant and Young Child-feeding (IYCF) a potential double-duty strategy to prevent the double burden of malnutrition among children at the critical age? Abstract
BACKGROUND This study characterized undernutrition among children (0-24 months) by age groups specified for Infant and Young Child-feeding (IYCF) and determined the association between child malnutrition and IYCF. METHODS This cross-sectional survey recruited mother-children dyads (N = 1443). WHO standards were used to assess nutritional status and IYCF indicators. Multivariate analyses were performed to assess the association between IYCF and nutritional indicators. RESULTS Stunting, underweight, wasting, overweight, and obesity were prevalent in 33.1%, 26%, 20.2%, 4.6%, and 2.9% of the children, respectively. Age-wise distribution of undernutrition identified severity of stunting and underweight at 10-24 months (median < -1.6 SD; < -1.2 SD; 25th percentile at -2.6 & -2.2 SD respectively) and wasting highest at 0-6 months (25th percentile close to -2SD). Boys manifested higher stunting (lower value -5.2 SD) and were more wasted (lower value -4.7 SD). IYCF prevalence recorded early initiation at 45.2%, exclusive breastfeeding at 23.1%, and prelacteal and bottle-feeding at 37.5 and 22.5% respectively. Child minimum diet diversity (MDD) ≥4 was not achieved by 84%. Minimum meal frequency and minimum acceptable diet were achieved by 75% and 14% respectively. Bottle-feeding increased the odds of wasting [AOR: 1.501 (95% CI: 1.062-2.121)], severe stunting [AOR: 1.595 (95% CI: 1.079-2.358)] and underweight [AOR: 1.519 (95% CI 1.102-2.094)]. Wasting according to BAZ scores was associated with delayed initiation of breastfeeding [AOR: 1.387 (95% CI: 1.018-1.889)] and bottle feeding [AOR: 1.538 (95% CI: 1.087-2.175)]. Delayed introduction of complementary feeding increased the odds of severe stunting [AOR: 2.189 (95% CI: 1.090-4.399)]. Formula feeding increased the odds of underweight [AOR: 1.738 (95% CI: 1.046-2.888)] and obesity [AOR: 4.664 (95% CI: 1.351-16.10)]. Prelacteal feeding increased the odds of severe forms of stunting and underweight by 56% and 79% respectively, and overweight by 96%. CONCLUSION Setting and age-specific interventions to improve age-appropriate child-feeding practices are vital to address the double burden of malnutrition in the critical age group.

Abstract
Background Malnutrition among children, adolescent girls and women is a serious public health issue in India. Malnutrition among adolescent girls is likely to carry on this vicious cycle by giving birth to low birthweight babies. Moreover, low birthweight babies who survive are likely to suffer growth retardation and illness throughout their childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Present situation analysis highlights not only the overall nutrition picture of Devbhumi Dwarka but also narrates the uptake of current nutrition and healthcare services in the Devbhumi Dwarka district. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 3,738 study population (1,301 children, 1,185 pregnant and lactating women and 1,252 adolescent girls) across four blocks of the Devbhumi Dwarka district of Gujarat. Anthropometric assessments were carried out and the WHO Asia Pacific classification was used for the assessment of malnutrition. Results The prevalence of wasting, underweight and stunting was 14%, 17% and 32%, respectively, in children under two years of age. The prevalence of anaemia among pregnant women (Hb <11 g/dL) was 72.92%; 91.36% of lactating women were anaemic (Hb <12 g/dL). The prevalence of underweight (<-2 SD) among adolescent girls was 19.6%. Block-wise variation in prevalence was observed. Overall, utilization of integrated child development services and health services by these target groups remained sub-optimal. Conclusion The study has revealed the suboptimal nutritional status of children, pregnant and lactating women and adolescent girls of Devbhumi Dwarka, which signifies the need for urgent attention. Several areas of priority have been identified and discussed to improve the overall nutrition status in the district.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The main aim of this study was to assess prelacteal feeding practice and its determinant factors among mothers having children less than 6 months of age in Bure district, Northwest Ethiopia. DESIGN Community-based cross-sectional study design. SETTING Northern Ethiopia. PARTICIPANTS The present study was conducted among 621 mothers who had children less than 6 months of age in Bure district, Northwest Ethiopia, from 1 March 2019 to 30 March 2019. PRIMARY OUTCOME Mothers prelacteal feeding practice, modelled using multivariable logistic regression. SECONDARY OUTCOME Determinant factors of prelacteal feeding practice. RESULTS This study found that the prevalence of prelacteal feeding practice was 11.6% ((95% CI 9.0% to 14.2%)). Delayed initiation of breast feeding (adjusted OR, AOR=5.4, 95% CI 2.2 to 13.5), mothers who did not get counselling of breast feeding (AOR=2.9, 95% CI 1.2 to 7.2), home delivery (AOR=6.9, 95% CI 2.2 to 21.5), primiparous mothers (AOR=4.1, 95% CI 1.4 to 12.2), a newborn with history of neonatal illness (AOR=3.3, 95% CI 1.3 to 8.5) and lack of postnatal care visits (AOR=3.9, 95% CI 1.3 to 11.8) were determinant factors of prelacteal feeding practice. CONCLUSIONS Delayed initiation of breast feeding, mothers who did not get counselling of breast feeding, home delivery, primiparous mothers, newborns with a history of neonatal illness and lack of postnatal care visits were determinant factors of prelacteal feeding practice. Therefore, healthcare workers should provide a home to home health education for mothers on the merits of early initiation of breast feeding, promote institutional delivery, enhance maternal health-seeking behaviour and encourage mothers to have postnatal care visits is recommended.

Abstract
Objectives To assess of the time of breastfeeding initiation, identify reasons for delay, if any and to assess if any prelacteal feeds were offered. Methods An observational study was conducted among the inpatients of a tertiary care centre in Bhubaneswar, India. A total of 385 mothers, without contraindications to breastfeeding were interviewed at the earliest after childbirth. Results Only 36.4% mothers initiated breastfeeding "timely." Those who had undergone vaginal delivery scored better than cesarean sections with 41.3% (CI 95%; P = 0.016). Rooming in helped at 37.6% (CI 95%; P = 0.006). Multiparous homemakers from nuclear families and those who had previously breast fed initiated earlier than their counterparts. Less than 5% (CI 95%; P = 0.056) offered prelacteal feeds, mostly water. Conclusions Our study reveals an alarming decline in the timely initiation of breastfeeding in Odisha, India from 68.5% to 41.6%.

Abstract
Background. Prelacteal feeding is defined as administration of
any substances other than breast milk to newborn babies during the first 3 days
after birth. Despite its negative health outcomes, it is commonly practiced in
developing countries. Therefore, this study aimed at assessing the prevalence of
pre-lacteal feeding practices and associated factors among mothers of children
aged less than 2 years of age in Kersa district, Eastern Ethiopia.
Method. A community-based cross-sectional study design was
conducted among 465 mothers having children aged less than 2 years in Kersa
district. A multistage sampling technique was used to select study participants.
Binary logistic regression analysis was fitted to identify factors associated
with prelacteal feeding practices. Variables with a P-value
<.05 were identified as statistically significant factors.
Results. The prevalence of pre-lacteal feeding in Kersa
district was 46.4% (95% CI; 42.0%, 51.5%). Initiating breastfeeding after 1 hour
of delivery (AOR = 10.80, 95% CI: (5.79, 20.17)), giving birth at home
(AOR = 2.77, 95% CI: (1.41, 5.46)), not knowing risks associated with
pre-lacteal feeding (AOR = 3.25, 95% CI: (1.72, 6.15)) and perceiving
pre-lacteal feeding as beneficial (AOR = 9.56, 95% CI: (4.45, 20.52)) were
factors significantly associated with practice pre-lacteal feeding practices.
Conclusion. Significant proportions of mothers were
practicing pre-lacteal feeding in the study area. Late initiation of
breastfeeding, home delivery, not knowing risks of prelacteal feeding, and
perceiving pre-lacteal feeding as beneficial were contributing factors for
practicing of pre-lacteal feeding. Therefore, promoting institutional delivery
and timely initiation of breastfeeding would reduce prelacteal feeding in Kersa
district.
