Diffuse bilateral hemangiosarcoma of the uterus in a dog

Uterine haemangiosarcoma in a Netherland Dwarf rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus Netherland dwarf)

A 7-year-old intact Netherlands Dwarf rabbit with bloody discharge from the vulva underwent ovariohysterectomy. Grossly, both sides of the uterus were enlarged. Histologically, the tumour had formed protruded from the myometrial wall toward the serosa and was composed of irregular small capillaries with irregularly shaped structures and bundled proliferation of spindle-shaped cells. No tumour cells infiltrated the endometrium. The tumour cells were positive for CD31, and histological and immunohistochemical staining confirmed the diagnosis of haemangiosarcoma. Vascular tumours in the uterus of animals are uncommon, and only one case has been reported in the uterus of rabbits.

Primary Uterine Hemangiosarcoma in a Thoroughbred: A Case Report

A 1.8-year-old maiden Thoroughbred filly, without previous history of mating or reproductive management, was referred for clinical inspection due to the presence of sanguineous vaginal discharge and severe abdominal pain. Transrectal palpation indicated uterine asymmetry, and transrectal ultrasonography revealed a mass near the cervix measuring 8.3 cm in diameter, with heterogeneous echogenicity, a trabeculated center, and a well-defined hyperechoic border. Smaller masses surrounded the larger uterine mass. During the examination, the mare expelled a uterine mass through the vulva. Histological and immunohistochemical (CD31 and Factor VIII) examinations of the expelled mass suggested a diagnosis of hemangiosarcoma. Therefore, a therapeutic hysterectomy was performed, and examinations of the uterine tissue confirmed the diagnosis. However, the mare was euthanized 2 weeks later due to postoperative complications. The animal was subjected to necropsy, and intestinal adhesions in the surgical incision were diagnosed as postoperative complications. No other neoplasms were found during necropsy, establishing the primary origin of the tumor. This case study presents the first known report of uterine hemangiosarcoma in an equine species.

First report of an endometrial adenoacanthoma in a dog

Uterine adenoacanthoma, a subtype of primary endometrial adenocarcinoma, was found in a tissue specimen removed during ovariohysterectomy from an 8-year-old German Shepherd dog. Multifocal, benign squamous metaplastic islands were identified in the parenchyma of the malignant endometrial tumour. The tumour was highly infiltrative but did not metastasise to other organs. Detailed immunohistochemical analyses were carried out in order to characterise the immunophenotype of the tumour.

Uterine leiomyosarcoma and pyometra in a dog

A seven-year-old entire female, mixed-breed dog, weighing 19 kg, was presented with a 2-day history of abdominal distension, reduced appetite and general dullness. Abdominal palpation revealed a large mass. Radiography showed a large mass occupying the left mid-abdominal area and convoluted loops of tubular fluid opacity occupying the right mid-abdominal area. Ultrasonography revealed a large heterogeneous mass with an anechoic area and some hyperechoic foci, indicative of calcification, in the mid-abdominal area. Furthermore, hypoechoic areas were found in the middle and caudal abdominal area and were presumed to be the fluid-filled uterine horns. At laparotomy, a 10·5×14·5-cm firm mass was found in the uterine body, while the uterine horns were filled with a thick red-brownish exudate; ovariohysterectomy was subsequently performed. A diagnosis of uterine leiomyosarcoma associated with pyometra was established by histopathology and immunohistochemistry.

Haemangiosarcoma in the uterine remnant of a spayed female dog

A 11-year-old, female, spayed greyhound was presented with a haemorrhagic discharge from the vulva. Clinical examination, vaginoscopy and a computed tomography scan showed an irregular egg-sized mass in the region of the cervix and uterine stump. An endoscopic grab biopsy (incisional) suggested a malignant mesenchymal tumour. Following this, surgical excision of the cranial vagina, cervix and the uterine remnant was performed. The final diagnosis of haemangiosarcoma was based on histological examination of the larger excisional biopsy specimen and was confirmed by positive immunolabelling of the neoplastic endothelial cells for the von Willebrand factor.

Endometrial adenocarcinoma and mucometra in a 6-year-old Alaska Malamute dog

A 6-year-old female Alaska Malamute dog was presented for evaluation of abdominal enlargement referred by a local veterinarian. On the history, the owner complained of chronic abdominal enlargement initiated more than 4 months ago, reduced appetite, occasional vomiting and general dullness. He also complained of greenish mucous intermittent vaginal discharge starting 10 days ago. The bitch was chronically treated with medroxiprogesterone acetate. A laparatomy was performed and fluid in the abdomen was found and aspirated during the surgery. Also a very fluid-filled distended uterus and a mass in the distal part of the left uterine horn were found. The mass was encapsulated by the omentum, but areas of necrosis and calcification were identified. Histopathological diagnosis was endometrial adenocarcinoma.

Reproductive oncology

The actual incidence of reproductive tract tumors is difficult to ascertain, presumably because a significant percentage of dogs and cats are neutered, particularly in the United States. Data from European countries, where elective neutering is less common, provides insights. Several studies document the relative frequency of reproductive tumors. Larger studies of the more common tumors, e.g., testicular tumors, provide a substantial amount of information on the clinical presentation and response to treatment of dogs, but overall there is less information available on cats. Numerous case reports document the less commonly reported tumors and will be included in the following discussion.
