Abstract
Using culture enrichment methods, 100 strains of bacilli of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from honeybee Apis mellifera intermissa and fresh honey, collected from apiaries located in the north-east of Algeria. Amongst all of the isolated LAB, 19 selected strains were closely affiliated to four species-Fructobacillus fructosus (10), Apilactobacillus kunkeei (5), Lactobacillus kimbladii and/or Lactobacillus kullabergensis (4)-using phylogenetic and phenotypic approaches. The in vitro probiotic characteristics (simulated gastrointestinal fluids tolerance, autoaggregation and hydrophobicity abilities, antimicrobial activity and cholesterol reduction) and safety properties (hemolytic activity, antibiotic resistance and absence of biogenic amines) were evaluated. The results indicated that some strains showed promising potential probiotic properties. In addition, neither hemolytic activity nor biogenic amines were produced. The carbohydrate fermentation test (API 50 CHL) revealed that the strains could efficiently use a broad range of carbohydrates; additionally, four strains belonging to Apilactobacillus kunkeei and Fructobacillus fructosus were found to be exopolysaccharides (EPS) producers. This study demonstrates the honeybee Apis mellifera intermissa and one of her products as a reservoir for novel LAB with potential probiotic features, suggesting suitability for promoting host health.

Abstract
Bee pollen is a hive product made up of flower pollen grains, nectar, and bee salivary secretions that beekeepers can collect without damaging the hive. Bee pollen, also called bee-collected pollen, contains a wide range of nutritious elements, including proteins, carbs, lipids, and dietary fibers, as well as bioactive micronutrients including vitamins, minerals, phenolic, and volatile compounds. Because of this composition of high quality, this product has been gaining prominence as a functional food, and studies have been conducted to show and establish its therapeutic potential for medical and food applications. In this context, this work aimed to provide a meticulous summary of the most relevant data about bee pollen, its composition—especially the phenolic compounds—and its biological and/or therapeutic properties as well as the involved molecular pathways.

Abstract
This paper evaluated the chemical and biological properties of bee pollen samples from Romania. Firstly, the bee pollen alcoholic extracts (BPEs) were obtained from raw bee pollen harvested by Apis mellifera carpatica bees. The chemical composition of BPE was obtained by determination of total phenol content and total flavonoid content, UHPLC-DAD-ESI/MS analysis of phenolic compounds, and GC-MS analysis of fatty acids, esters, and terpenes. Additionally, the antioxidant activity was evaluated by the Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity method. Furthermore, the biological properties of BPE were evaluated (antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity). The raw BP samples studied in this paper had significant phenolic acid and flavonoid content, and moderate fatty acid, ester, and terpene content. P1, P2, and P4 have the highest TPC and TFC levels, and the best antioxidant activity. All BPEs studied had antimicrobial activity on pathogenic strains isolated from the clinic or standard strains. A synergistic antimicrobial effect of the BPEs was observed along with the soluble compounds of L. rhamnosus MF9 and E. faecalis 2M17 against some pathogenic (clinical) strains and, considering the tumour proliferation inhibitory activity, makes BP a potential prebiotic and antitumour agent for the gut environment.

Abstract
Vaginal inflammation is a common disease of the dairy cows' reproductive tract. Lactic acid bacteria can combat purulent inflammation caused by pathogenic bacteria and regulate the NF-κB signaling pathway mediated by toll-like receptors (TLRs) in the inflammatory response. We studied the effect of Lactobacillus johnsonii SQ0048, an isolate with antibacterial activity, on the NF-κB signaling pathway in cow vaginal epithelial cells. The expression levels of serial effectors related to the TLRs-MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway (TLR2, TLR4, MyD88, IKK, NF-κB, IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-10) were measured with real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), ELISA, and Western blot analyses. TLR2 and TLR4 were activated by SQ0048 cells, as noted by increased mRNA expression levels of TLR2 and TLR4 in SQ0048-treated bovine vaginal epithelial cells relative to control cells (P <0.01). SQ0048 treatment also significantly increased MyD88 and IKK expression, and activated NF-κB in vaginal epithelial cells (P <0.01). In addition, SQ0048 treatment also significantly increased mRNA expression levels of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, but decreased IL-10 mRNA expression levels (P <0.01). These data indicate that strain SQ0048 presence can improve the immune functions of cow vaginal epithelial cells by activating TLRs-MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathways. However, further in vivo studies are required to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Healing and regeneration of periodontium are considered as a complex physiological process. Therefore, treatments need to be addressed with highly effective components modulating the multiple pathways. In this study, exopolysaccharide (EPS) produced by Weissella cibaria EIR/P2, was partially purified from the culture supernatant and subjected to characterization within the aim of evaluating its potential for periodontal regeneration. High-Performance Liquid Chromatography analysis revealed a single-peak corresponding to the glucose which identified the EPS as dextran. Fourier transform-infrared spectra were also displayed characteristic peaks for polysaccharides. According to the results of gel permeation/size exclusion-chromatography, the molecular mass was determined to be 8 × 106 Da. To clarify its anti-bacterial activity on Streptococcus mutans, effects on viability and biofilm formation was evaluated. At 50 mg/mL, dextran exhibited a bactericidal effect with 70% inhibition on biofilm formation. Besides, dose-dependent antioxidant effects were also detected. The efficacy of dextran in enhancing the viability of human periodontal ligament fibroblast cells (hPDLFCs) was evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium-bromide (MTT) assay, and an increase was observed in the viability of hPDLFCs. In conclusion, dextran derived from W. cibaria can be potentially used as a multi-functional bioactive polymer in the design of new therapeutic strategies to promote healing and regeneration of periodontium.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Lactic acid bacteria are generally recognized as safe that could be beneficial for several uses in food industry to get their health benefits. The present study was focused on the isolation and identification of some new lactic acid bacteria that might be naturally occurred in the honeybees stomach and tried to explore their benefits. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty five isolates of lactic acid bacteria were isolated from the stomach of three different types of Egyptian bees (Apis mellifera lamarckii ), Carniolan bees (A.m. carnica) and hybrid Carniolan bees. Identification of isolates was carried out based on phenotypical tests and carbohydrate assimilation using API50 CHL and 16S rDNA sequencing. RESULTS In the present study, the results emphasized Lactobacillus plantarum to be the predominant species (62.5%), other strains were identified as Pediococcus pentosaceus (12.5%), Lactobacillus pentosus (12.5%) and Lactobacillus sakei (12.5%). Eight of 25 isolates showed a potential antibacterial activity especially against Salmonella senftenberg strain. The novel isolates (HBMSS1, HBMSS3, HBMSS4, HBMSS5, HBMSS6 and HBMSS8) showed a significant antimicrobial activity against C. botulinum, E. coli, S. Senftenberg and S. epidermidis as food borne pathogens and P. larvae and M. plutonius as honeybee pathogens. CONCLUSION These promising findings might be beneficial for discovering novel preservatives in food industry and substitution of antibiotic drugs used in the treatment of honeybees' infection.

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to reveal the role of the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in the beebread transformation/preservation, biochemical properties of 25 honeybee endogenous LAB strains, particularly: antifungal, proteolytic, and amylolytic activities putatively expressed in the beebread environment have been studied. Seventeen fungal strains isolated from beebread samples were identified and checked for their ability to grow on simulated beebread substrate (SBS) and then used to study mycotic propagation in the presence of LAB. Fungal strains identified as Aspergillus niger (Po1), Candida sp. (BB01), and Z. rouxii (BB02) were able to grow on SBS. Their growth was partly inhibited when co-cultured with the endogenous honeybee LAB strains studied. No proteolytic or amylolytic activities of the studied LAB were detected using pollen, casein starch based media as substrates. These findings suggest that some honeybee LAB symbionts are involved in maintaining a safe microbiological state in the host honeybee colonies by inhibiting beebread mycotic contaminations, starch, and protein predigestion in beebread by LAB is less probable. Honeybee endogenous LAB use pollen as a growth substrate and in the same time restricts fungal propagation, thus showing host beneficial action preserving larval food. This study also can have an impact on development of novel methods of pollen preservation and its processing as a food ingredient.

Antibiotic susceptibility profile of Pediococcus spp. from diverse sources. 3 Biotech 2018; 8:489. Abstract
The aim of the present study was to assess the antibiotic susceptibility profile of Pediococcus strains from diverse sources. From a total of 115 dairy and non-dairy samples, 40 Pediococcus strains were isolated. Their biochemical and molecular characterization confirmed them as P. pentosaceus and P. acidilactici. All the 40 identified isolates were evaluated for antibiotic susceptibility using disc diffusion assay against a total of 20 antibiotics. The isolates exhibited varied range of responses towards the antibiotics depending on the strain type, source and location of isolation. All the isolates were either sensitive or intermediate resistant to amoxycillin, erythromycin, ceftriaxone, cloxacillin, cefoperazone, penicillin, netillin, gentamycin and chloramphenicol. Resistance towards vancomycin and nalidixic acid was exhibited by most of the isolates. A total of 16 strains belonging to dosa batter (n = 4; n = number of isolates), fermented vegetables (n = 4), fermented grape juice (n = 4), idly batter (n = 3) and the only isolate from butter milk exhibited sensitivity/intermediate towards 80-90% of the studied antibiotics. No considerable difference in susceptibility pattern was observed between the two Pediococcus species, i.e., P. pentosaceus and P. acidilactici. Overall, the maximum resistance was exhibited by isolates belonging to silage (Sil-2; 50%) followed by cow milk (PD-41), dosa batter (8-PD) and human isolate (PD-45) which showed resistance towards 40% of studied antibiotics. The susceptibility profiling of Pediococcus strains will be helpful in their safer selection for future food and feed applications.

Abstract
Pediococcus pentosaceus MZF16 has been isolated from artisanal Tunisian meat so called "Dried Ossban," an original ecological niche, and identified by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and 16S rDNA sequencing. This bacterium showed a high tolerance to gastric stress conditions, and toward bile salts. P. pentosaceus MZF16 also demonstrated a hydrophobic surface profile (high adhesion to xylene), autoaggregation, and adhesive abilities to the human intestinal Caco-2/TC7 cell line. These properties may help the bacterium colonizing the gut. Furthermore, MZF16 was found to be resistant to gentamycin and chloramphenicol but did not harbor any transferable resistance determinants and/or virulence genes. The data also demonstrated absence of cytotoxicity of this strain. Conversely, P. pentosaceus MZF16 can slightly stimulate the immune system and enhance the intestinal epithelial barrier function. Moreover, this bacterium has been shown to be highly active against Listeria spp. due to bacteriocin production. Characterization of the bacteriocin by PCR amplification, sequencing and bioinformatic analyses revealed that MZF16 produces a bacteriocin 100% identical to coagulin, a pediocin-like inhibitory substance produced by Bacillus coagulans. To our knowledge, this is the first report that highlights the production of a pediocin 100% identical to coagulin in a Pediococcus strain. As coagulin, pediocin MZF16 has the consensus sequence YYGNGVXCXXXXCXVXXXXA (X denotes any amino acid), which confirms its belonging to class IIa bacteriocins, and its suitability to preserve foods from Listeria monocytogenes development. According to these results, P. pentosaceus MZF16 can be proposed as a probiotic and bioprotective agent for fermented foods, including Tunisian dry meat and sausages. Further investigations will aim to study the behavior of this strain in meat products as a component of functional food.

Abstract
Although Weissella confusa was established as a species over 25 years ago, it has been understudied until very recently. Several independent observations have driven the recent interest in this important microorganism. First, this Leuconostoc-like species of Lactic Acid Bacteria is associated with agricultural environments, many spontaneous food fermentations-especially carbohydrate-rich vegetable fermentations-and silage. Second, Weissella confusa are members of the autochthonous microbiota of healthy humans and livestock. Third, Weissella confusa-in a strain-specific fashion-are postulated to be good candidates for the development of novel direct-fed microbial products. Fourth, Weissella confusa-in a strain-specific fashion-have been described as opportunistic pathogens-especially in immunocompromised individuals. Last, a distantly related species (Weissella ceti) is the etiologic agent of weissellosis, a disease that affects farmed fish that are important for commercial aquaculture. The purpose of this literature-based safety assessment is to consolidate findings from primary research related to Weissella confusa and its natural associations with and effects on animals, humans, and their agricultural environments. Based on these assessments, it is reasonable to conclude that many Weissella confusa are safe for use in direct-fed microbial products for poultry.

Abstract
The primary mission of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is to enforce the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and regulate food, drug, and cosmetic products. Thus, this agency monitors the presence of pathogenic microorganisms in these products, including canned foods, as one of the regulatory action criteria and also ensures that these products are safe for human consumption. This study was carried out to investigate the effectiveness of pathogen control and integrity of ready-to-eat canned food containing Black Bean Corn Poblano Salsa. A total of nine unopened and recalled canned glass jars from the same lot were examined initially by conventional microbiologic protocols that involved a two-step enrichment, followed by streaking on selective agar plates, for the presence of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Of the eight subsamples examined for each sample, all subsamples of one of the containers were found positive for the presence of slow-growing rod-shaped, gram-positive, facultative anaerobic bacteria. The recovered isolates were subsequently sequenced at rRNA and gyrB loci. Afterward, multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was performed characterizing 11 additional known MLST loci (clpX, dnaA, dnaK, groEL, murC, murE, pepX, pyrG, recA, rpoB, and uvrC). Analyses of the nucleotide sequences of rRNA, gyrB, and 11 MLST loci confirmed these gram-positive bacteria recovered from canned food to be Lactobacillus fermentum . Thus, the DNA sequencing of housekeeping MLST genes can provide species identification of L. fermentum and can be used in the canned food monitoring program of public health importance.

Abstract
Bacteria assigned to the genus Weissella are Gram-positive, catalase-negative, non-endospore forming cells with coccoid or rod-shaped morphology (Collins et al., 1993; Björkroth et al., 2009, 2014) and belong to the group of bacteria generally known as lactic acid bacteria. Phylogenetically, the Weissella belong to the Firmicutes, class Bacilli, order Lactobacillales and family Leuconostocaceae (Collins et al., 1993). They are obligately heterofermentative, producing CO2 from carbohydrate metabolism with either d(-)-, or a mixture of d(-)- and l(+)- lactic acid and acetic acid as major end products from sugar metabolism. To date, there are 19 validly described Weissella species known. Weissella spp. have been isolated from and occur in a wide range of habitats, e.g., on the skin and in the milk and feces of animals, from saliva, breast milk, feces and vagina of humans, from plants and vegetables, as well as from a variety of fermented foods such as European sourdoughs and Asian and African traditional fermented foods. Thus, apart from a perceived technical role of certain Weissella species involved in such traditional fermentations, specific Weissella strains are also receiving attention as potential probiotics, and strain development of particularly W. cibaria strains is receiving attention because of their high probiotic potential for controlling periodontal disease. Moreover, W. confusa and W. cibaria strains are known to produce copius amounts of novel, non-digestible oligosaccharides and extracellular polysaccharides, mainly dextran. These polymers are receiving increased attention for their potential application as prebiotics and for a wide range of industrial applications, predominantly for bakeries and for the production of cereal-based fermented functional beverages. On the detrimental side, strains of certain Weissella species, e.g., of W. viridescens, W. cibaria and W. confusa, are known as opportunistic pathogens involved in human infections while strains of W. ceti have been recently recongnized as etiological agent of "weissellosis," which is a disease affecting farmed rainbow trouts. Bacteria belonging to this species thus are important both from a technological, as well as from a medical point of view, and both aspects should be taken into account in any envisaged biotechnological applications.
