Abstract
Methacrylate monomers functionalized with pendant carbazole and oxadiazole moieties were copolymerized into random copolymers with varying carbazole/oxadiazole ratios. Specifically, the monomers of 2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)ethyl 2-methylacrylate (CE) and 4-[5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl]phenyl 2-methylacrylate (tBPOP) were copolymerized in various ratios, and the inherent hole drift mobilities were assessed through time-of-flight techniques. At a field strength of 345 kV/cm, the homopolymer PCE exhibited a hole mobility of 5.9 x 10(-7) cm(2)/V.s, which was approximately twice the value of the technologically important poly(9-vinylcarbazole), which exhibited a value of 2.8 x 10(-7) cm(2)/V.s. The range of hole mobilities in the copolymers varied from 2.4 x 10(-8) cm(2)/V.s for copolymers containing 50 mol % of the carbazole-containing monomer residue to 3.0 x 10(-7) cm(2)/V.s for copolymers that incorporated 88 mol % of the residue. Density functional theory (B3LYP/6-21G*) and optical absorption derived highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energies of CE were -5.39 and -1.94 eV, respectively, while the corresponding oxadiazole monomer (tBPOP) had a HOMO energy of -5.99 eV and a LUMO energy of -2.23 eV. The mean luminous efficiency of coumarin 6 doped single-layer devices constructed from the poly(CE-co-tBPOP) copolymers indicated a relatively flat efficiency of ca. 0.25 cd/A over a wide carbazole mole fraction content of 0.30-0.70.

Abstract
We have studied the magnetic field effects (MFEs) on the charge-transfer fluorescence and transient photocurrent of a 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene-doped poly(N-vinylcarbazole) film, which reflect the recombination and escape yields of the carriers, respectively. The recombination yield dependence of the external magnetic field (B) clearly shows two types of the MFEs, growth with increasing B due to the hyperfine mechanism (HFM) and a negative dip due to the level-crossing mechanism (LCM). On the other hand, the escape yield indicates complementary MFEs with a sharp decrease in yield with increasing B and then a positive dip. Simultaneous observation of the HFM- and LCM-MFEs proves the stepwise hole-hopping mechanism rather the long-range hole-jumping one. The quantitative analysis of the recombination and escape MFEs is performed using the stochastic Liouville equations (SLE) for a one-dimensional lattice model in which the stepwise hole hops take place between the nearest neighbor carbazole units with spin conservation. The SLE analysis provides the recombination and hole transfer rate constants of 7.0 x 10(7) and 4.5 x 10(8) s(-1), respectively. The boundary site number for the ion pairs in the one-dimensional model is estimated by the best fit to the experimental results. The interionic distance of the boundary ion pair in the one-dimensional model including eight sites agrees with the thermalization distance in the Onsager model. Hence, it is concluded that the elementary processes in the Onsager model applied to molecular amorphous solids are the stepwise hole hops rather than a long-range hole jump.

Abstract
Fluorescence techniques, including quenching and anisotropy measurements, have been used to study the photophysical behavior of the carbazole-based oligoethers poly{9-(2,3-epoxypropyl)carbazole}, PEPCz, and poly{1,2-epoxy-6-(9-carbazolyl)-4-oxahexane}, PECzOH, and their model compounds, in dilute fluid solutions in THF. These compounds show no evidence of excimer formation under these conditions and their fluorescences exhibit first-order decay behavior regardless of the degree of polymerization of the oligomer. Both steady-state and time-resolved anisotropy measurements upon dilute, glassy solutions show that intramolecular energy migration occurs in the oligomers. Fluorescence quenching experiments, using both dimethylterephthalate and oxygen as quenchers, produced evidence which supports the supposition that in the absence of excimer trapping sites, intramolecular energy migration will be encouraged in dilute fluid solutions of the oligoethers. Unfortunately, the fluorescence quenching data did not permit evaluation of the extents of energy migration in the various polymers or the relative efficiencies with which migration occurs in the two different types of oligoether. This limitation would appear to be a general feature of fluorescence quenching measurements, despite their frequent adoption, in the past, in studies of energy migration in polymers.
