Web-based E-survey in identifying current physiotherapy practices in paediatric burns

INTRODUCTION

Physiotherapy practices in pediatric burns involves relaxation techniques and exercise training for attaining physical fitness, improving quality of life and, thereby to prevent primary and secondary complications. Physical activity and exercise act as a meaningful and purposeful tool for attaining physical fitness after burn injury.

AIM

The aim of this e-survey is to identify the current practices of physiotherapy interventions in pediatric burn rehabilitation among physiotherapy students and professionals.

METHODS

The e-survey was created with validated questionnaire using a Google Forms to gather the information related to current physiotherapy practices in pediatric burns. After the sample size estimation, survey link were sent to identified 144 physiotherapy students and professionals using social networking sites which includes, WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram for this cross-sectional e-survey. The frequency and percentage of survey responses were analyzed.

RESULTS

Among 144 identified participants, 62 participants completed the survey, resulting in the response rate of (43.0%). The findings of this study revealed that> 50% of physiotherapy students, and professionals, are performing pain and scar assessment, along with their regular physiotherapy management in children with burns. In addition to these, they also practice physiotherapy for burn conditions in pediatric intensive care units (PICU), pediatric wards, and clinical outpatient department (OPD) settings.

CONCLUSION

Physiotherapy students and professionals have sufficient knowledge regarding pediatric burns complications, and also, they are well aware regarding recent physiotherapy practices in pediatric burn care management.

Bedtime Smart Phone Usage and Its Effects on Work-Related Behaviour at Workplace

The over usage and over dependency on digital devices, like smartphones, has been considered as a growing international epidemic. The increased dependency on gadgets, especially smartphones for personal and official uses, has also brought many detrimental effects on individual users. Hence it is vital to understand the negative effects of smartphone usage on human. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of bedtime smartphone usage on work performances, interpersonal conflicts, and work engagement, via the mediating role of sleep quality among employees. Using a cross-sectional study design, a questionnaire-based field survey was conducted on 315 employees who participated as respondents. The results confirmed the negative effects of bedtime smartphone usage on sleep quality. Along with it, the effects of sleep quality on work performances, work engagements and interpersonal conflicts were also proven to be statistically significant. Regarding the mediating role of sleep quality, it was empirically evident that sleep quality mediates the relationship between bedtime smartphone usage with work performances and interpersonal conflicts. The findings revealed that bedtime smartphone usage reduces sleep quality among the employees, resulting in lower work performances and engagements while contributing to higher interpersonal conflicts. The findings concluded that smartphone usage before sleep increases the prospects of employees to be less productive, less engaged, and have more workplace conflicts. The findings warrant the continued managerial as well as academic research attention, as the smartphones are now used by many organisations to run businesses as well.

Social Media and Health Care, Part I: Literature Review of Social Media Use by Health Care Providers

BACKGROUND

As the world continues to advance technologically, social media (SM) is becoming an essential part of billions of people's lives worldwide and is affecting almost every industry imaginable. As the world is becoming more digitally oriented, the health care industry is increasingly visualizing SM as an important channel for health care promotion, employment, recruiting new patients, marketing for health care providers (HCPs), building a better brand name, etc. HCPs are bound to ethical principles toward their colleagues, patients, and the public in the digital world as much as in the real world.

OBJECTIVE

This review aims to shed light on SM use worldwide and to discuss how it has been used as an essential tool in the health care industry from the perspective of HCPs.

METHODS

A literature review was conducted between March and April 2020 using MEDLINE, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science for all English-language medical studies that were published since 2007 and discussed SM use in any form for health care. Studies that were not in English, whose full text was not accessible, or that investigated patients' perspectives were excluded from this part, as were reviews pertaining to ethical and legal considerations in SM use.

RESULTS

The initial search yielded 83 studies. More studies were included from article references, and a total of 158 studies were reviewed. SM uses were best categorized as health promotion, career development or practice promotion, recruitment, professional networking or destressing, medical education, telemedicine, scientific research, influencing health behavior, and public health care issues.

CONCLUSIONS

Multidimensional health care, including the pairing of health care with SM and other forms of communication, has been shown to be very successful. Striking the right balance between digital and traditional health care is important.

Impact of Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) lockdown on physical activity and energy expenditure among physiotherapy professionals and students using web-based open E-survey sent through WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram messengers

Background

Coronavirus disease - 19 (COVID-19) spread throughout the world and become pandemic. To stop and control the rapid infection of COVID-19 lockdown is the best option. Sudden lockdown implies change in entire lifestyle of the population. Social isolation affects individual's lives by greater reduction in their physical activity, which might increase the chance of infection by reducing immunity. To what extent, the physical activity is reduced during this lockdown period among physiotherapy professionals, and students who propagate physical activity is not known. Hence, we aimed to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on physical activity level and energy expenditure among physiotherapy professionals and students.

Material and methods

One hundred and forty three volunteered physiotherapy professionals and students participated in web-based open E-survey. The survey was carried out by sending the Google Forms link for International Physical activity questionnaire-short form (IPAQ-SF) through social networking sites using Google Forms to gather the amount of PA before and during COVID-19 lockdown period and analysed using Wilcoxon signed rank test.

Results

Among identified 261 potential survey participants, 143 responded, reaching a response rate of 54.8%. Total physical activity before and during COVID-19 lockdown period were 7809.7 (3849.7-11769.8) MET-min/week and 4135.7 (867.2-7404.1) MET-min/week; p < 0.0001. While energy expenditure before and during COVID-19 lockdown period were 8189.8 (4242.1-12137.6) kcal/wk and 4221.7 (1004.6-7438.8) kcal/wk; p < 0.0001.

Conclusion

A significant reduction in self-report physical activity and energy expenditure levels were observed among physiotherapy professionals and students during the COVID-19 lockdown period.

Impact of nomophobia: A nondrug addiction among students of physiotherapy course using an online cross-sectional survey

BACKGROUND

Smartphone addiction is known as nomophobia (NMP) which is a fear of not using mobile phone. More researches are available regarding NMP among the students of various professions. However, till date, to the best of our knowledge, there is no literature available on the impact of NMP on the academic performance among students pursuing physiotherapy course (SPPC).

AIM

To determine the impact of NMP among SPPC.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

An online cross-sectional survey was conducted by using Google Form platform utilizing validated NMP questionnaires (NMP-Q). A self-reported questionnaire regarding demographic data, information regarding smartphone use, last academic performance, and presence of musculoskeletal disorders was collected. A total of 157 students participated in this survey. Google Form automatically analyzed the collected data.

RESULTS

The mean age of students was 22.2 ± 3.2 years; among them, 42.9% were male and 57.1% were female. Nearly 45% of students have been using smartphone for >5 years and 54% students have musculoskeletal disorders during their prolonged smartphone use. The mean NMP score with 95% confidence interval was 77.6 (72.96-82.15). There exists an inverse relation between the NMP scores (NMPS) and student's academic performance and no significant difference between NMP scores, P = 0.152.

CONCLUSION

NMP among the SPPC have been established. There might be a negative impact between NMP and academic performance.
