Correlates of Participation in a Family-Based HIV Prevention Program: Exploring African-American Women's Motivations and Understanding of the Program

Cognitive behavioral therapy: a meta-analysis of race and substance use outcomes

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective intervention for reducing substance use. However, because CBT trials have included predominantly White samples caution must be used when generalizing these effects to Blacks and Hispanics. This meta-analysis compared the impact of CBT in reducing substance use between studies with a predominantly non-Hispanic White sample (hereafter NHW studies) and studies with a predominantly Black and/or Hispanic sample (hereafter BH studies). From 322 manuscripts identified in the literature, 16 met criteria for inclusion. Effect sizes between CBT and comparison group at posttest had similar effects on substance abuse across NHW and BH studies. However, when comparing pre-posttest effect sizes from groups receiving CBT between NHW and BH studies, CBT's impact was significantly stronger in NHW studies. T-test comparisons indicated reduced retention/engagement in BH studies, albeit failing to reach statistical significance. Results highlight the need for further research testing CBT's impact on substance use among Blacks and Hispanics.

Family process and content: comparing families of suicide attempters, human immunodeficiency virus positive patients and general population in southern iran, 2012

Background:

Family is considered as the smallest social unit, which is the basis of forming a society and one of the effective factors for individual behaviors. When family pattern is useful, the family will be productive and otherwise it becomes nonproductive.

Aim:

This study aimed to investigate family process and content among families of suicide attempters, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive patients, and general population in Shiraz, Southern Iran.

Subjects and Methods:

This was a causal-comparative study. Our study population included three groups of single men, including suicide attempters, HIV positive patients and general population in Southern Iran. Our sample size was 180 male individuals including 60 suicide attempters referring to one of hospitals in Shiraz, 60 HIV positive patients referring to Behavioral Health Consultation Center, and 60 individuals from the general population who were selected using simple sampling method and were being investigated by Samani's family process and family content questionnaires. Data were being analyzed by ANCOVA and MANCOVA.

Results:

The two clinical groups had a poorer situation than the general population (P < 0.001) in some dimensions of family process including decision-making and coping (P < 0.001), mutual respect, and communication (P = 0.02) when compared with the general population. HIV positive patients had significantly lower scores than suicide attempters in some dimensions of family content including financial resources, social position (P < 0.001), and place of residence (P = 0.04). The two clinical groups had a poor situation in most of the dimensions when compared with the general population (P < 0.001).

Conclusions:

The results of this study indicate the importance of education in the field of communication, decision-making and coping skills.

Predictors of engagement in a school-based family preventive intervention for youth experiencing behavioral difficulties

The researchers longitudinally assessed parent and child levels of engagement in an evidence-based preventive intervention for children. The sample included 114 fifth graders with aggressive, disruptive behaviors and their parents who participated in the Coping Power Program. Findings indicate that levels of engagement differentially fluctuated for children and parents throughout the course of the intervention. Results also suggest that child levels of engagement early in the course of the program influenced parent mid-intervention levels of engagement. Further, these relationships persisted when the influence of family environment variables were included in analyses.
