The Desire to Dissociate Scale: factor analysis, cross-cultural findings, and links to substance-induced dissociation

BACKGROUND

Past research identified that a desire for dissociative experiences, rather than dissociative tendencies, mediate the relationship between early sexual abuse and problem drinking in college students. Desire to dissociate was conceptualized as a mechanism facilitating substance-induced dissociation or the use of substances to achieve dissociative-like experiences and was measured using a modified version of the Dissociative Experiences Scale-II. The validity and cross-cultural generalizability of the modified scale are not yet known.

OBJECTIVES

The current study examined the psychometric properties of the modified scale, exploring findings across U.S. and Filipino college samples, and explored how the desire to dissociate construct related to other variables linked to substance-induced dissociation. Methods: Participants were recruited across two U.S. samples and one Filipino sample (N = 2404; 72% female). Instead of asking "how often do you experience" dissociative items, 14-items from the original scale were selected and individuals were asked "how often would you like to experience" items.

RESULTS

Results supported the validity of the Desire to Dissociate Scale (DDS) with a bifactor model best fitting the data in U.S. and Filipino samples. The bifactor model identified that the DDS primarily measured a general 'desire to dissociate' factor and two specific factors comprised smaller portions of the variance. DDS scores were positively correlated with trauma-related and alcohol use variables including drinking to cope, variables conceptually consistent with theories of substance-induced dissociation.

CONCLUSION

Clinical implications address avoidant coping patterns and differences in specific factor findings between U.S. and Filipino samples.

Culture, trauma and dissociation: A broadening perspective for our field

In the field of trauma and dissociation, culture has a significant influence on the clinical presentation of patients. A growing body of literature addresses the relationship between culture and dissociation. Studies of this relationship though, evoke the important, but at the same time extremely sensitive issue of cross-cultural comparisons. In this editorial, I provide a limited overview of various ways in which cultural influences have been addressed in the field of trauma and dissociation. Most studies have examined the occurrence of dissociative disorders in clinical populations in different cultures and countries. Some have focused on normative dissociation as a response to traumatic events in non-clinical samples from different cultures. This editorial also explores the concepts of double consciousness and black consciousness, which have emerged from the fields of social psychology and black psychology; and how these concepts influence our thinking about non-clinical dissociation. Culture-related challenges in the field of trauma and dissociation create opportunities for training in cultural competence for therapists. Qualitative research methods might be best suited to future research on the relationship between culture, trauma and dissociation. The chances of reaching a thorough and deep understanding of the influence of culture on trauma and dissociation might be best if the entire spectrum of dissociation is studied - from normal to pathological dissociation, and in its different manifestations from universal to those unique to certain cultural groups.

Experiences of possession and paranormal phenomena among women in the general population: are they related to traumatic stress and dissociation?

This study sought to determine the prevalence of experiences of possession and paranormal phenomena (PNP) in the general population and their possible relations to each other and to traumatic stress and dissociation. The study was conducted on a representative female sample recruited from a town in central eastern Turkey. The Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule, the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder sections of the Structured Clinical Interviews for DSM-IV Axis-I and Personality Disorders, and the Childhood Abuse and Neglect Questionnaire were administered to 628 women. Of these, 127 (20.2%) women reported at least 1 type of PNP and 13 (2.1%) women reported possession. Women with a dissociative disorder reported all types of possession and PNP (except telepathy) more frequently than those without. Whereas women with a trauma history in childhood and adulthood or PTSD reported possession more frequently than those without, PNP were associated with childhood trauma only. Factor analysis yielded 4 dimensions: possession by and/or contact with nonhuman entities, extrasensory communications, possession by a human entity, and precognition. These factors correlated with number of secondary features of dissociative identity disorder and Schneiderian symptoms. Latent class analysis identified 3 groups. The most traumatized group, with predominantly dissociative and trauma-related disorders, had the highest scores on all factors. Notwithstanding their presence in healthy individuals, possession and PNP were associated with trauma and dissociation in a subgroup of affected participants. Both types of experience seem to be normal human capacities of experiencing that may be involved in response to traumatic stress. Given the small numbers, this study should be considered preliminary.

Comparison of brazilian spiritist mediumship and dissociative identity disorder

We studied the similarities and differences between Brazilian Spiritistic mediums and North American dissociative identity disorder (DID) patients. Twenty-four mediums selected among different Spiritistic organizations in São Paulo, Brazil, were interviewed using the Dissociative Disorder Interview Schedule, and their responses were compared with those of DID patients described in the literature. The results from Spiritistic mediums were similar to published data on DID patients only with respect to female prevalence and high frequency of Schneiderian first-rank symptoms. As compared with individuals with DID, the mediums differed in having better social adjustment, lower prevalence of mental disorders, lower use of mental health services, no use of antipsychotics, and lower prevalence of histories of physical or sexual childhood abuse, sleepwalking, secondary features of DID, and symptoms of borderline personality. Thus, mediumship differed from DID in having better mental health and social adjustment, and a different clinical profile.
