Abstract
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide. For this reason, the development of new therapies is still essential. In this work we have analyzed the antitumor potential of levoglucosenone, a chiral building block derived from the pyrolysis of cellulose-containing materials such as soybean hulls, and three structurally related analogues. Employing human and murine mammary cancer models, we have evaluated the effect of our compounds on cell viability through MTS assay, apoptosis induction by acridine orange/ethidium bromide staining and/or flow cytometry and the loss of mitochondrial potential by tetramethylrhodamine methyl ester staining. Autophagy and senescence induction were also evaluated by Western blot and β-galactosidase activity respectively. Secreted metalloproteases activity was determined by quantitative zymography. Migratory capacity was assessed by wound healing assays while invasive potential was analyzed using Matrigel-coated transwell chambers. In vivo studies were also performed to evaluate subcutaneous tumor growth and experimental lung colonization. All compounds impaired in vitro proliferation with IC50 values in a range of low micromolar. Apoptosis was identified as the main mechanism responsible for the reduction of monolayer cell content induced by the compounds without detecting modulations of autophagy or senescence processes. Two of the four compounds (levoglucosenone and its brominated variant) were able to modulate in vitro events associated with tumor progression, such as migratory potential, invasiveness, and proteases secretion. Furthermore, tumor volume and metastatic spread were significantly reduced in vivo after the treatment these two compounds. Here, we could obtain from soybean hulls, a material with almost no commercial value, a variety of chemical compounds useful for breast cancer treatment.

Abstract
Billion tons of post-consumer Tetra Pak cartons are discarded annually as land and ocean wastes, creating significant environmental problems and resource losses. Recycling of the carton wastes is hindered by its multi-material compositions and low values of the recycled products. In this study, a novel upcycling of the cartons was investigated. A post-consumer carton consisting of paper, polyolefin, and polyamide was directly converted in 210-230 °C tetrahydrofuran containing 10-20 mM acid to produce up to 19.2% of levoglucosenone and 8.6% of furfural by selectively decomposing paper fraction. The remaining solids containing mostly intact polyethylene and polyamide but also a smaller fraction of paper-derived char were separated using a solvent-dissolution method. The xylene-soluble fraction was a recycled polymer similar to the original polyethylene, which was verified by its functional groups, the composition of the pyrolysis products, and the melt rheology results. The xylene-insoluble fraction was a mixture of polyamide and paper-derived char. Upon pyrolysis, caprolactam was produced as the only major vapor product. The remaining, thermally stable paper-derived char could be used as a high-quality solid fuel. Overall, the demonstrated recycling method could potentially maximize the values of the products recovered from carton wastes.

Abstract
Abstract
Zinc oxide (ZnO) has been proven to be highly effective in converting biomass into fine chemicals. It possesses several limitations, such as leaching in hydrothermal reactions and difficulty with regard to its recovery. Supporting ZnO on silica improves its recovery, stability and recyclability. In this study, we produced silica-supported ZnO by incipient wetness impregnation (IWI) method for the conversion of glucose into lactic acid. The presence of the ZnO provided active sites for isomerization to occur. The highest yield of lactic acid was 39.2% at 180 °C for 60 min. Prolonged reaction time and higher reaction temperature promoted further degradation of lactic acid into acetic acid. The yield of lactic acid decreased after the first cycle and decreased slightly for the nine consecutive cycles.

Abstract
Levoglucosenone has been used as template for the synthesis of a wide variety of compounds with an impressive structural variability. However, scarce work has been done regarding the generation of new bioactive entities. Here we report the cytotoxic effect of levoglucosenone and some related derivatives against hepatocarcinoma cell lines. Compounds were obtained in only one synthetic step and one of them showed an activity within the range of IC50 values of cisplatin, a frequently administered chemotherapy drug.

Abstract
A novel convenient approach for the synthesis of densely functionalized pyrano[3,4-c]pyrrole derivatives was developed. Cascade transformation of the simple adducts of tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) and ketones (4-oxoalkane-1,1,2,2-tetracarbonitriles) in the presence of aldehyde under the action of acetic acid led to the diastereoselective formation of targeted pyrano[3,4-c]pyrroles. The reaction pathway was thoroughly investigated, and proposed intermediates were shown to be consistent with experiment.
