Abstract
ABSTRACT
A 12 yr old spayed female mixed-breed dog presented for evaluation of a recurrent soft-tissue sarcoma. On physical examination, a firm mass was palpated ventral to the left ramus of the mandible. A fine-needle aspirate of the mass was suggestive of a round-cell neoplasm. A complete blood count, serum biochemical profile, and an abdominal ultrasound with liver and splenic aspirates were performed, and no clinically relevant abnormalities were identified. Advanced imaging of the skull identified an enlarged parotid salivary gland and an enlarged ipsilateral medial retropharyngeal lymph node. The medial retropharyngeal lymph node was sampled via fine-needle aspiration, and a round-cell population similar to what was present in the mass was identified. An incisional biopsy was performed under general anesthesia, which yielded a diagnosis of salivary gland extramedullary plasmacytoma, confirmed with immunohistochemistry (MUM-1). The parotid salivary gland and medial retropharyngeal lymph node were then surgically excised, and metastasis to the lymph node was confirmed by histopathology. The dog remained alive for 685 days after surgery until she was euthanized for hindlimb paresis of undetermined cause.

Abstract
Abstract
In this case report we are presenting a rare case of primary pulmonary plasmacytoma in a dog in the context of clinical and pathological findings. A six-years-old, female Rottweiler was brought to the clinic with respiratory complaints. The patient was dyspneic and tachypneic, and there were friction sounds on auscultation of the lungs. Laryngeal and tracheal palpation induced severe cough. Lateral and ventrodorsal radiographs of the thorax showed increased opacity in the lungs and loss of cardiac silhouette. Based on clinical and radiological findings, diagnosis of a lung mass was made and surgery recommended. Under general anesthesia, bilobectomy of the right lung lobes by medial sternotomy was performed. Upon cytological and histopathological findings, plasmacytoma was diagnosed.

Abstract
Plasmacytomas are discrete, B cell-derived, round cell tumours that sometimes are difficult to distinguish from canine cutaneous histiocytomas or T cell lymphosarcomas (lymphomas). Diagnosis of plasmacytomas relies on morphological observations and immunohistochemistry for multiple myeloma oncogene-1 (MUM-1) and cluster of differentiation 3 (CD3). Clonality testing often is used as an adjunct diagnostic tool to examine lymphoproliferative diseases. In this study, the sensitivity of PCR-based clonality analysis of antigen receptor gene rearrangements in canine cutaneous plasmacytomas was determined. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded sections of 29 canine plasmacytomas, 23 diffuse large B cell lymphomas (DLBCLs) and 23 lymph nodes without lymphoma were used for clonality analysis. New oligonucleotide primers for the framework (FR)2 and FR3 regions of the immunoglobulin heavy chain (IGH) V gene subgroup 3 were designed and used with previously reported FR3 primers. Although plasma cells are of B cell lineage, the detected frequency of IGH clonality in plasmacytoma was 0-34.5% with the seven primers used, whereas in DLBCLs it was 8.7-78.3%. In 23 lymph nodes without lymphoma, IGH clonality was detected in only one case with two out of the seven primers used. Sequence analysis of PCR products from plasmacytomas revealed mismatches in the annealing region of the FR3 primers. The sensitivity of detecting IGH clonality in canine plasmacytomas was lower than in DLBCLs. The low detection rate of IGH clonality in canine plasmacytoma may be due to somatic hypermutation of the variable region.

Abstract
The 2016 annual National Toxicology Program Satellite Symposium, entitled "Pathology Potpourri" was held in San Diego, CA, at the Society of Toxicologic Pathology's (STP) 35th annual meeting. The goal of this symposium was to present and discuss challenging diagnostic pathology and/or nomenclature issues. This article presents summaries of the speakers' talks, along with select images that were used by the audience for voting and discussion. Some lesions and topics covered during the symposium included malignant glioma and histiocytic sarcoma in the rodent brain; a new statistical method designed for histopathology data evaluation; uterine stromal/glandular polyp in a rat; malignant plasma cell tumor in a mouse brain; Schwann cell proliferative lesions in rat hearts; axillary schwannoma in a cat; necrosis and granulomatous inflammation in a rat brain; adenoma/carcinoma in a rat adrenal gland; hepatocyte maturation defect and liver/spleen hematopoietic defects in an embryonic mouse; distinguishing malignant glioma, malignant mixed glioma, and malignant oligodendroglioma in the rat; comparison of mammary gland whole mounts and histopathology from mice; and discussion of the International Harmonization of Nomenclature and Diagnostic Criteria collaborations.

Abstract
Primary and secondary nervous system involvement occurs in 4% and 5%–12%, respectively, of all canine non-Hodgkin lymphomas. The recent new classification of canine malignant lymphomas, based on the human World Health Organization classification, has been endorsed with international acceptance. This histological and immunocytochemical classification provides a unique opportunity to study the histologic anatomic distribution patterns in the central and peripheral nervous system of these defined lymphoma subtypes. In this study, we studied a cohort of 37 dogs with lymphoma, which at necropsy had either primary (n = 1, 2.7%) or secondary (n = 36; 97.3%) neural involvement. These T- (n = 16; 43.2%) or B-cell (n = 21; 56.8%) lymphomas were further classified into 12 lymphoma subtypes, with predominant subtypes including peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) or diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), respectively. This systematic study identified 6 different anatomically based histologically defined patterns of lymphoma infiltration in the nervous system of dogs. Different and distinct combinations of anatomical patterns correlated with specific lymphoma subtypes. Lymphoma infiltration within the meningeal, perivascular, and periventricular compartments were characteristic of DLBCL, whereas peripheral nerve involvement was a frequent feature of PTCL. Similarly cell counts above 64 cells/μL in cerebrospinal samples correlated best with marked meningeal and periventricular lymphoma infiltration histologically. Prospective studies are needed in order to confirm the hypothesis that these combinations of histological neuroanatomic patterns reflect targeting of receptors specific for the lymphoma subtypes at these various sites.
