Tunable single-mode operation of a pulsed optical parametric oscillator pumped by a multimode laser

Tunable narrow-linewidth high-peak-power sub-nanosecond optical parametric generator by injection seeding

We present an efficient tunable optical parametric generator (OPG) with its linewidth close to the Fourier transform limit by injection seeding a tunable diode laser. Benefitting from high-peak-power sub-nanosecond (426 ps) laser pumping and a high-gain MgO:PPLN (PPMgLN) crystal, the OPG produced signal peak power up to 0.343 MW at 1638 nm and the total conversion efficiency reached 47.9% at 1-kHz pulse repetition rate. Considering the linewidth limit of short signal pulses (∼ 350 ps), a tunable seeder with the linewidth at hundred-MHz level was applicable. The achieved OPG signal tuning range was 1510-1638 nm with linewidth at GHz level, which is two orders of magnitude narrower than the unseeded OPG. Injection seeding a non-resonant OPG device does not introduce extra cavity feedback electronics that are essential for an optical parametric oscillator (OPO), greatly improving robustness and reducing cost. It is believed such a compact, tunable and costless PPMgLN OPG with high peak power, high repetition rate and relatively narrow linewidth has great significance in lidar, spectroscopy, etc.

Photoacoustic Imaging in Biomedicine and Life Sciences

Photo-acoustic imaging, also known as opto-acoustic imaging, has become a widely popular modality for biomedical applications. This hybrid technique possesses the advantages of high optical contrast and high ultrasonic resolution. Due to the distinct optical absorption properties of tissue compartments and main chromophores, photo-acoustics is able to non-invasively observe structural and functional variations within biological tissues including oxygenation and deoxygenation, blood vessels and spatial melanin distribution. The detection of acoustic waves produced by a pulsed laser source yields a high scaling range, from organ level photo-acoustic tomography to sub-cellular or even molecular imaging. This review discusses significant novel technical solutions utilising photo-acoustics and their applications in the fields of biomedicine and life sciences.

Characterization of a CH planar laser-induced fluorescence imaging system using a kHz-rate multimode-pumped optical parametric oscillator

The performance characteristics of a new CH planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) imaging system composed of a kHz-rate multimode-pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO) and high-speed intensified CMOS camera are investigated in laminar and turbulent CH4-H2-air flames. A multi-channel Nd:YAG cluster that produces up to 225 mJ at 355 nm with multiple-pulse spacing of 100 μs (corresponding to 10 kHz) is used to pump an OPO to produce up to 6 mJ at 431 nm for direct excitation of the A-X (0, 0) band of the CH radical. Single-shot signal-to-noise ratios of 82:1 and 7.5:1 are recorded in laminar premixed flames relative to noise in the background and within the flame layer, respectively. The spatial resolution and image quality are sufficient to accurately measure the CH layer thickness of ~0.4 mm while imaging the detailed evolution of turbulent flame structures over a 20 mm span. Background interferences due to polycyclic-aromatic hydrocarbons and Rayleigh scattering are minimized and, along with signal linearity, allow semi-quantitative analysis of CH signals on a shot-to-shot basis. The effects of design features, such as cavity finesse and passive injection seeding, on conversion efficiency, stability, and linewidth of the OPO output are also discussed.

Transition from single-mode to multimode operation of an injection-seeded pulsed optical parametric oscillator

Optical-heterodyne measurements are made on ~842-nm signal output of an injection-seeded optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on periodically poled KTiOPO4 pumped at 532 nm by long (~27-ns) pulses from a Nd:YAG laser. At low pump energies (</= 2.5 times the free-running threshold), the narrowband tunable OPO output is single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) and frequency chirp can be <10 MHz, much less than the transform-limited optical bandwidth (~17.5 MHz). We explore the transition from SLM operation to multimode operation as pump energy or phase mismatch are increased, causing unseeded cavity modes to build up later in the pulse.

Narrowband tuning of an injection-seeded pulsed optical parametric oscillator based on a self-adaptive, phase-conjugate cavity mirror

Narrowband tuning of a pulsed optical parametric oscillator (OPO) is achieved with a self-adaptive injection-seeded optical cavity employing a phase-conjugate reflector. This approach is used in a novel OPO system based on periodically poled KTiOPO4 and pumped at 532 nm by a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. The OPO is injection seeded at 835-855 nm by a continuous-wave tunable diode laser, which also enables a Rh:BaTiO3 photorefractive crystal to act as a wavelength-selective phase-conjugate reflector, with no need for active control of cavity length. The single-longitudinal-mode tunability and operational simplicity of this OPO system are demonstrated experimentally.

Pulsed injection-seeded optical parametric oscillator with low frequency chirp for high-resolution spectroscopy

An injection-seeded optical parametric oscillator (OPO), based on periodically poled KTiOPO4 and pumped by a frequency-doubled, nanosecond-pulsed Nd:YAG laser, generates continuously tunable, single-longitudinal-mode, pulsed output at approximately 842 nm for high-resolution spectroscopy. Optical-heterodyne measurements show that the OPO frequency chirp increases linearly with detuning from the free-running (unseeded) OPO frequency and can be maintained as low as 10 MHz. Other factors affecting chirp are identified.

Nd:YAG-pumped periodically poled LiNbO3 optical parametric generator seeded with the narrowband output of a 532-nm pumped optical parametric generator

We present a simple scheme to generate a continuously tunable pulsed narrow-bandwidth infrared wave. An Nd:YAG-pumped periodically poled lithium niobate optical parametric generator (OPG) is seeded with the output of another OPG pumped by the second harmonic (0.532 microm) of the Nd:YAG laser. A tunable idler wave from the 0.532-microm pumped OPG, operated away from the degenerate point, provides a narrow linewidth seed source for the 1.064-microm pumped broadband OPG. Seeding forces the second OPG to operate in a narrowband operation comparable with that of the seed source. Linewidth of the YAG-pumped OPG is 5-25 nm, in the tuning range of 1.61-1.83 microm (signal), narrowed to 1.48-1.05 nm. Methods of further reduction of linewidth also have been discussed.
