Design study of nanograting-based surface plasmon resonance biosensor in the near-infrared wavelength

Numerical analysis of Phase change material and graphene-based tunable refractive index sensor for infrared frequency spectrum

Here, we present the findings of parametric analysis into a phase transition material Ge2Sb2Te5(GST)-based, graphene-based, with a wide dynamic range in the infrared and visible electromagnetic spectrum. The suggested structure is studied in multi-layered configurations, built up with layers of GST, graphene, silicon, and silver materials. These multilayer structures' reflectance behavior has been described for refractive indices between 1.3 and 2.5. The complete design is simulated using a computational process called the finite element method. Additionally, we have investigated the impact of material heights on the structure's performance in general. We have presented several resonating tracing curves in polynomial equations to determine the sensing behavior across a specific wavelength range and refractive index values. The proposed design is also investigated at various inclined angles of incidence to ascertain its wide-angle stability. A computational study of the proposed structure can assist in the evolution of biosensors to identify a wide range of biomolecules, including malignant, hemoglobin urine, saliva-cortisol, and glucose.

Sensitivity-Enhanced SPR Sensor Based on Graphene and Subwavelength Silver Gratings

A novel surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor with graphene and subwavelength gratings is proposed to improve the sensing performance. A series of numerical analyses were performed to investigate the effect of structural parameters on the sensing performance, such as minimum reflectance at resonance (MRR), full width at half maximum (FWHM), and resonance angle. The results indicated that near-zero MRR (2.9 × 10^-6) and narrow FWHM (about 3.5 deg) could be obtained by optimizing the geometrical parameters. Moreover, the influence of the number of graphene layers on sensitivity was also studied. The maximum sensitivity of the designed sensor could reach 192 deg/refractive index unit (RIU), which is a great enhancement compared to the silver-only SPR sensor. In addition, ethylene glycol solutions with different refractive indices were detected. The results showed that the sensitivity of the sensor could reach 220.67 deg/RIU, and the proposed sensor had excellent linearity between the resonance angle and refractive index, enabling extensive potential practical sensing applications.

Gold-aluminum-based surface plasmon resonance sensor with a high quality factor and figure of merit for the detection of hemoglobin

A gold (Au) and aluminum (Al)-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor, with a high-quality factor and figure of merit, for the detection of hemoglobin concentration in human blood is proposed. The sensing performance of a bimetallic Au grating over an Al film-based sensor depends on the thickness of the Al film. The sensor's performance is closely analyzed in terms of well-defined performance parameters: sensitivity, FWHM, and depth of SPR dips in order to optimize the thickness of Al film. With optimized thickness, we could achieve quality factor and figure of merit values of 286.2  RIU^-1 and 0.97  deg^-1, respectively. Al is chemically unstable, and, to address the oxidation problem, we analyzed the sensor with an ultrathin protective Au layer between the Au grating and Al film. We show that the introduction of an ultrathin Au layer gives stability to the sensor without much affecting the performance of the sensor. The obtained values of quality factor and figure of merit of the proposed sensor are 245.2  RIU^-1 and 0.86  deg^-1, respectively. We also discuss the potential of hemoglobin detection of the proposed sensor in the near-infrared region. Reported sensitivity of the sensor is 0.62°/dgL^-1.

Biosensors based on Bloch surface waves in one-dimensional photonic crystal with graphene nanolayers

In biosensors research, much effort has been made to achieve high sensitivity to detect lower concentrations of analyte in a solution by testing different kinds of materials. In this paper, we present a biosensor based on Bloch surface waves made of photonic crystal (PhC) including graphene nanolayers under the Kretschmann configuration. The band structures, surface modes, reflectivity, and sensitivity of the PhC biosensor are calculated by the transfer matrix method and results are compared with those of the structure without graphene layers. Our investigations show that the angular sensitivity of the biosensor considerably increases in the presence of the graphene layers. Moreover, we study the effect of the number of the graphene layers placed on the surface of the biosensor on the performance of our proposed biosensor. The results reveal that the sensitivity of the biosensor is enhanced by increasing the number of graphene layers on the surface due to the π-stacking interactions between graphene's honeycomb cells and the carbon rings in biomolecules. Furthermore, our results show that the phase sensitivity is higher than the angular sensitivity, which can promote the accuracy of the calculations.

Improved biomolecular detection based on a plasmonic nanoporous gold film fabricated by oblique angle deposition

We demonstrated an enhanced surface plasmon resonance (SPR) detection by incorporating a nanoporous gold film on a thin gold substrate. Nanoscale control of thickness and roughness of the nanoporous layer was successfully accomplished by oblique angle deposition. In biosensing experiments, the results obtained by biotin-streptavidin interaction showed that SPR samples with a nanoporous gold layer provided a notable sensitivity improvement compared to a conventional bare gold film, which is attributed to an excitation of local plasmon field and an increased surface reaction area. Imaging sensitivity enhancement factor was employed to estimate an overall sensor performance of the fabricated samples and an optimal SPR structure was determined. Our approach is intended to show the feasibility and extend the applicability of the nanoporous gold film-mediated SPR biosensor to diverse biomolecular binding events.

Investigation of subwavelength grating structure for enhanced surface plasmon resonance detection

A metallic subwavelength grating structure built on a thin gold film is studied for surface plasmon resonance (SPR) detection of refractive index variations of biological buffer solutions. By employing finite element analysis as a numerical method, characteristics of the angle interrogated SPR sensor were calculated and discussed in a broad operating wavelength varying from visible to near-infrared (NIR). The effects of grating structural parameters such as grating depth, grating period, and grating fill factor in different operating wavelengths have been evaluated on the sensor performance parameters of sensitivity, full width at half-minimum, minimum reflectance at resonance, and resonance angle. Numerical results indicate that adjusting grating geometrical parameters can enhance the performance parameters of the sensor especially in the NIR wavelengths. The enhanced sensor performance parameters for optimizing grating geometry have been explored in detail for visible and NIR wavelengths of 633 and 984 nm, respectively. These findings are important for developing localized surface plasmon sensors with enhanced performance.
