Modes of Effective Connectivity within Cortical Pathways Are Distinguished for Different Categories of Visual Context: An fMRI Study

Context contributes to accurate and efficient information processing. To reveal the dynamics of the neural mechanisms that underlie the processing of visual contexts during the recognition of color, shape, and 3D structure of objects, we carried out functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of subjects while judging the contextual validity of the three visual contexts. Our results demonstrated that the modes of effective connectivity in the cortical pathways, as well as the patterns of activation in these pathways, were dynamical depending on the nature of the visual contexts. While the fusiform gyrus, superior parietal lobe, and inferior prefrontal gyrus were activated by the three visual contexts, the temporal and parahippocampal gyrus/Amygdala (PHG/Amg) cortices were activated only by the color context. We further carried out dynamic causal modeling (DCM) analysis and revealed the nature of the effective connectivity involved in the three contextual information processing. DCM showed that there were dynamic connections and collaborations among the brain regions belonging to the previously identified ventral and dorsal visual pathways.

No masking between test and mask components in perceptually different depth planes

2-D cues to perceived depth organization have been used to segregate test and mask stimulus components in a discrimination task. Observers made either spatial-frequency or orientation judgments on a rectangular test component by itself or in the presence of constant rectangular masks. There were two basic masking conditions: same-plane or different-plane. In the same-plane conditions, the test components and masks are perceived as existing in the same depth plane. In the different-plane conditions, the test and mask components are perceived to exist in different depth planes. The perception of different depth planes was achieved by using perceived occlusion, which could place either component closer or further from the observer. The results suggest that when test and mask components are separated into different depth planes they no longer influence one another. This effect could be observed in either depth organization, test components in front of the masks or mask components in front of the test. These results indicate that the figure-ground organization of components is not important. Only the designation as existing in the same or different depth planes affects whether or not a mask is effective.

Peeling plaids apart: context counteracts cross-orientation contrast masking

Background

Contrast discrimination for an image is usually harder if another image is superimposed on top. We asked whether such contrast masking may be enhanced or relieved depending on cues promoting integration of both images as a single pattern, versus segmentation into two independent components.

Methodology & Principal Findings

Contrast discrimination thresholds for a foveal test grating were sharply elevated in the presence of a perfectly overlapping orthogonally-oriented mask grating. However thresholds returned to the unmasked baseline when a surround grating was added, having the same orientation and phase of either the test or mask grating. Both such masking and ‘unmasking’ effects were much stronger for moving than static stimuli.

Conclusions & Significance

Our results suggest that common-fate motion reinforces the perception of a single coherent plaid pattern, while the surround helps to identify each component independently, thus peeling the plaid apart again. These results challenge current models of early vision, suggesting that higher-level surface organization influences contrast encoding, determining whether the contrast of a grating may be recovered independently from that of its mask.

Area summation in human visual system: psychophysics, fMRI, and modeling

Contextual modulation is a fundamental feature of sensory processing, both on perceptual and on single-neuron level. When the diameter of a visual stimulus is increased, the firing rate of a cell typically first increases (summation field) and then decreases (surround field). Such an area summation function draws a comprehensive profile of the receptive field structure of a neuron, including areas outside the classical receptive field. We investigated area summation in human vision with psychophysics and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The stimuli were drifting sine wave gratings similar to those used in previous macaque single-cell area summation studies [corrected]. A model was developed to facilitate comparison of area summation in fMRI to area summation in psychophysics and single cells. The model consisted of units with an antagonistic receptive field structure found in single cells in the primary visual cortex. The receptive field centers of the model neurons were distributed in the region of the visual field covered by a single voxel. The measured area summation functions were qualitatively similar to earlier single-cell data. The model with parameters derived from psychophysics captured the spatial structure of the summation field in the primary visual cortex as measured with fMRI. The model also generalized to a novel situation in which the neural population was displaced from the stimulus center. The current study shows that contextual modulation arises from similar spatially antagonistic and overlapping excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms, both in single cells and in human vision.

Modeling contextual modulation in the primary visual cortex

Contextual modulation is a universal phenomenon in the primary visual cortex (V1). It is often allocated to the two categories of suppression and facilitation, which are either weakened or strengthened by the contextual stimuli, respectively. A number of experiments in neurophysiology have elucidated their important functions in visual information processing, such as contour integration, figure-ground segregation, saliency map and so on. A computational model, inspired by visual cortical mechanisms of contextual modulation, is presented in this paper. We first give separate models for surround suppression (SS), collinear facilitation (CF) and cross-orientation facilitation (COF), respectively, then unify them to a mixed model. Model behavior has then been tested using synthetical images and nature images, and is consistent with the data of physiological experimentation. We achieve fine results using the model to extract salient structures and contours from images. This work develops a computational model, using the perceptual mechanisms in V1, and provides a biologically plausible strategy for computer vision.

Contextual effects on fine orientation discrimination tasks

We examined the influence of context on fine orientation discrimination performance using sinusoidal grating patterns. Discrimination performance was impaired in the presence of modulated surrounds of the same spatial frequency, orientation, and contrast as the center. When center and surround were out-of-phase, separated by a gap of mean luminance, or very different in spatial frequency, performance remained at control levels. When center and surround were in-phase but mismatched in mean luminance, suppression was reduced or eliminated and performance was equivalent to luminance-mismatched control conditions. We speculate that lateral interactions in fine orientation discrimination tasks do not occur between objects that are perceptually distinct.

The effect of spatial configuration on surround suppression of contrast sensitivity

Contrast sensitivity is known to be strongly influenced by the target surround, yet the role of the surround interaction in visual processing remains unclear. Previously, we have shown that the surround strongly suppresses contrast sensitivity in the periphery when the surround spatial frequency and orientation match those of the target (Petrov, Carandini, & McKee, 2005). Here, we explore how various spatial characteristics of the iso-oriented and frequency-matched surround, such as surround phase and spatial layout, affect suppression. We manipulated surround geometry (annulus ring, half annulus, and bow tie) and its separation from the target (both laterally and in depth) and varied the position of the half-annulus and bow-tie surrounds with respect to Gabor target's orientation and with respect to its location in the visual field (i.e., radial vs. tangential surrounds). We also compared monoptic, dichoptic, and binocular surround suppression. Except for a significant radial-tangential anisotropy, only the area of the surround and the lateral separation between the surround and target had a significant effect on the magnitude of suppression. We showed that, although suppression amplitude remains constant with stimulus eccentricity, the lateral extent of suppression scales in proportion to the eccentricity. The most surprising finding was that the extent of surround suppression does not scale with stimulus size or spatial frequency. We suggest that the properties of surround suppression are best explained by a mechanism that selects salient targets for subsequent saccades.
