Abstract
An all-polarization maintaining (PM) noise-like pulse (NLP) generation from a Tm-doped fiber oscillator based on nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) that incorporated with a phase shifter and a chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) is experimentally demonstrated. The 3 dB bandwidth of the output spectrum is 25 nm at the central wavelength of 1950 nm, and the maximum output average power is 13.6 mW with the repetition rate of 3.25 MHz. The noise performances of the NLP are for the first time systematically examined, and it shows an improving tendency with the increasing of the output power. At an integration frequency range from 1 kHz to 1 MHz, the minimum estimated timing jitter and the rms RIN is 139 ps and 0.58%, respectively. In addition, the long-term stable operation of the laser is verified through monitoring the output spectrum and average power.

Abstract
We report the theoretical and experimental investigation of a self-starting mode-locked fiber laser with a nanoengineered Tm3+-doped yttrium-alumina-silica (YAS) fiber as the gain medium. The YAS fiber exhibits a higher capability of Tm3+ cluster elimination than commercial silica fibers. The Tm3+ fluorescence properties and YAS dispersion are well characterized. As a result, an efficient picosecond mode-locked fiber laser is demonstrated with a slope efficiency of 14.14% and maximum pulse energy of 1.27 nJ. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first mode-locked fiber laser based on a Tm3+-doped YAS fiber. The experimental observation is also supported by the numerical analysis.

Abstract
We report, for the first time, the nonlinear absorption at the 2 µm waveband of three Sb-related materials including two Sb compounds, GaSb and InSb, and one Sb alloy, Ge8Sb92. These saturable absorbers (SAs) were coated on tapered single mode fibers by the magnetron-sputtering deposition method. By incorporating these SAs into Tm-doped fiber lasers, ultrafast mode-locked solitons could be readily obtained. Stable pulse trains with 922 fs/753 fs/1005 fs pulse durations, 31.35 mW/37.70 mW/16.60 mW output powers, 93 dB/80 dB/92 dB signal-to-noise ratios were achieved with GaSb/InSb/Ge8Sb92, respectively. Our findings demonstrate that these materials can be widely used for photonic devices in the 2 µm waveband where ultrafast optical switching and modulating are desired.

Abstract
We experimentally report a low threshold soliton and a noise-like mode-locked fiber laser using an all-polarization-maintaining figure-eight cavity. We built a bidirectional pump structure without a phase shifter at the beginning of the experiment. The resonator has a high mode-locking threshold of 620 mW. Afterwards, we used a phase shifter in the resonator, and the laser can self-start in a conventional soliton (CS) mode-locked state when pump1 reaches the threshold of only 70 mW. The CS pulse with a duration of 863.8 fs can be observed at 1560 nm. When the two pump powers increase to 350 mW and 50 mW, the conventional soliton can convert to noise-like pulses. The central wavelength and pulse duration of noise-like mode-locked pulse are 1560.4 nm and 417.9 fs, respectively. The laser can realize conversion between ultrafast pulses and high-energy pulses, and have a low threshold that can be used for nonlinear frequency conversion, supercontinuum generation, sensing, etc.

Abstract
Nanosecond dissipative soliton resonance pulse is a demonstration of an all polarization-maintaining (PM) thulium-doped fiber laser in a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM)-based figure-eight configuration. Each loop of the apparatus includes a controllable power amplifier. With increased amplifier power, pulse width broadens linearly from 3.6 to 13.5 ns, and maximum single pulse energy can reach 27.5 nJ. Interestingly, the output peak power presents two completely opposite proportional effects in terms of the variation of settings for two amplifiers, respectively. The experimental results show that the NALM loop plays an important role for tunable pulse duration, and the unidirectional ring part makes a significant contribution for power scaling.

Abstract
We demonstrate an all-fiber, thulium-doped, mode-locked laser using a black phosphorus (BP) saturable absorber (SA). The BP-SA, exhibiting strong nonlinear response, is fabricated by inkjet printing. The oscillator generates self-starting 139 fs dispersion-managed soliton pulses centered at 1859nm with 55.6 nm spectral bandwidth. This is the shortest pulse duration and widest spectral bandwidth achieved directly from an all-fiber thulium-doped fiber laser mode-locked with a nanomaterial saturable absorber to date. Our findings demonstrate the applicability of BP for femtosecond pulse generation at 2 µm spectral region.

Abstract
Ultrafast Tm-doped fibre lasers have been actively studied for the last decade due to their potential applications in precise mid-IR spectroscopy, LIDARs, material processing and more. The majority of research papers is devoted to the comparison between a numerical modelling and experimental results; however, little attention is being paid to the comprehensive description of the mathematical models and parameters of the active and passive components forming cavities of Tm-doped all-fibre lasers. Thus, here we report a numerical model of a stretched-pulsed Tm-doped fibre laser with hybrid mode-locking and compare it with experimental results. The key feature of the developed numerical model is employment of the experimentally measured dispersion coefficients and optimisation of some model parameters, such as the bandwidth of the spectral filter spectral filtering and the saturation power of the active fibre, for a conformity with the experiment. The developed laser emits 331.7 fs pulses with a 23.8 MHz repetition rate, 6 mW of average power, 0.25 nJ of pulse energy, and a 21.66 nm spectral bandwidth at a peak wavelength of 1899.5 nm. The numerical model characteristics coincide with experimentally achieved spectral width, pulse duration, and average power with inaccuracy of 4.7%, 5.4%, and 22.9%, respectively. Moreover, in the discussion of the work the main possible reasons influencing this inaccuracy are highlighted. Elimination of those factors might allow to increase accuracy even more. We show that numerical model has a good agreement with the experiment and can be used for development of ultrafast Tm-doped fibre laser systems.

Abstract
We report the first investigation results of the nonlinear optical properties of As2Te3. More specifically, the nonlinear optical absorption properties of the prepared α-As2Te3 were investigated at wavelengths of 1.56 and 1.9 μm using the open-aperture (OA) Z-scan technique. Using the OA Z-scan technique, the nonlinear absorption coefficients (β) of α-As2Te3 were estimated in a range from (- 54.8 ± 3.4) × 104 cm/GW to (- 4.9 ± 0.4) × 104 cm/GW depending on the irradiance of the input beam at 1.56 μm, whereas the values did from (- 19.8 ± 0.8) × 104 cm/GW to (- 3.2 ± 0.1) × 104 cm/GW at 1.9 μm. In particular, the β value at 1.56 μm is an order of magnitude larger than the previously reported values of other group-15 sesquichalcogenides such as Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, and Bi2TeSe2. Furthermore, this is the first time report on β value of a group-15 sesquichalcogenide at a 1.9-μm wavelength. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the electronic band structures of α-As2Te3 were also conducted to obtain a better understanding of their energy band structure. The DFT calculations indicated that α-As2Te3 possess sufficient optical absorption in a wide wavelength region, including 1.5 μm, 1.9 μm, and beyond (up to 3.7 μm). Using both the measured nonlinear absorption coefficients and the theoretically obtained refractive indices from the DFT calculations, the imaginary parts of the third-order optical susceptibilities (Im χ(3)) of As2Te3 were estimated and they were found to vary from (- 39 ± 2.4) × 10-19 m2/V2 to (- 3.5 ± 0.3) × 10-19 m2/V2 at 1.56 μm and (- 16.5 ± 0.7) × 10-19 m2/V2 to (- 2.7 ± 0.1) × 10-19 m2/V2 at 1.9 μm, respectively, depending on the irradiance of the input beam. Finally, the feasibility of using α-As2Te3 for SAs was investigated, and the prepared SAs were thus tested by incorporating them into an erbium (Er)-doped fiber cavity and a thulium-holmium (Tm-Ho) co-doped fiber cavity for both 1.5 and 1.9 μm operation.

Abstract
In this work we report on the thulium-doped silica-based optical fibers with increased fluorescence lifetime of the 3F4 level thanks to the modification of the local environment of thulium ions by high content of alumina. The determination of the cross-relaxation energy-transfer coefficients from the measurements of the fluorescence lifetimes of the 3F4 and 3H4 energy levels of Tm3+ ions in the experimentally prepared optical fiber is provided as well. Preforms of optical fibers were prepared either by conventional solution-doping of Tm3+ and Al3+ ions or by dispersion-doping of Tm3+ ions with alumina nanoparticles. Optical fibers were characterized by means of Tm, Al, and Ge concentrations, refractive index profiles, optical spectral absorption and luminescence, and by time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Highly aluminium-codoped thulium silicate optical fibers exhibited fluorescence lifetimes of over ~500 μs with maximum value of 756 μs, which means a fluorescence lifetime enhancement when compared to the thulium-doped fibers reported elsewhere. We show an application of the thulium-doped fiber in a compact all-fiber ring laser that is passively mode-locked by using graphene-based saturable absorber. The output pulsewidth and repetition rate were 905 fs and 32.67 MHz, respectively.

Abstract
We demonstrate a long-term stable, all-fiber, erbium-doped femtosecond laser mode-locked by a black phosphorus saturable absorber. The saturable absorber, fabricated by scalable and highly controllable inkjet printing technology, exhibits strong nonlinear optical response and is stable for long-term operation against intense irradiation, overcoming a key drawback of this material. The oscillator delivers self-starting, 102 fs stable pulses centered at 1555 nm with 40 nm spectral bandwidth. This represents the shortest pulse duration achieved from black phosphorus in a fiber laser to date. Our results demonstrate the great potential for black phosphorus as an excellent candidate for long-term stable ultrashort pulse generation.

Abstract
This paper presents short wavelength operation of tunable thulium-doped mode-locked lasers with sweep ranges of 1702 to 1764 nm and 1788 to 1831 nm. This operation is realized by a combination of the partial amplified spontaneous emission suppression method, the bidirectional pumping mechanism and the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) technique. Lasing at emission bands lower than the 1800 nm wavelength in thulium-doped fiber lasers is achieved using mode confinement loss in a specially designed photonic crystal fiber (PCF). The enlargement of the first outer ring air holes around the core region of the PCF attenuates emissions above the cut-off wavelength and dominates the active region. This amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) suppression using our presented PCF is applied to a mode-locked laser cavity and is demonstrated to be a simple and compact solution to widely tunable all-fiber lasers.

Abstract
Generation of tunable scalar solitons from a polarization-maintaining (PM) mode-locked fiber laser is presented. A single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) absorber is used for self-started mode locking. A chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) mounted on a cantilever is employed as a tunable all-fiber filter. Mode-locked solitons are obtained with typical pulse duration of ~6.94 ps and repetition rate of 28.94 MHz. Linearly polarized laser emission is characterized with degree of polarization (DOP) of ~99.5%. The wavelength of the emitted scalar soliton can be continuously tuned through adjusting the CFBG, while maintaining the polarization stability.

Abstract
Various experimental data revealing large-area high-quality graphene films grown by the CVD method on Ge(001)/Si(001) substrates are presented. SEM images have shown that the structure of nano-facets is formed on the entire surface of Ge(001), which is covered by a graphene layer over the whole macroscopic sample surface of 1 cm(2). The hill-and-valley structures are positioned 90° to each other and run along the <100> direction. The hill height in relation to the valley measured by STM is about 10 nm. Raman measurements have shown that a uniform graphene monolayer covers the nano-facet structures on the Ge(001) surface. Raman spectroscopy has also proved that the grown graphene monolayer is characterized by small strain variations and minimal charge fluctuations. Atomically resolved STM images on the hills of the nanostructures on the Ge(001) surface have confirmed the presence of a graphene monolayer. In addition, the STS/CITS maps show that high-quality graphene has been obtained on such terraces. The subsequent coalescence of graphene domains has led to a relatively well-oriented large-area layer. This is confirmed by LEED measurements, which have indicated that two orientations are preferable in the grown large-area graphene monolayer. The presence of large-area coverage by graphene has been also confirmed by low temperature Hall measurements of a macroscopic sample, showing an n-type concentration of 9.3 × 10(12) cm(-2) and a mobility of 2500 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1). These important characteristic features of graphene indicate a high homogeneity of the layer grown on the large area Ge(001)/Si(001) substrates.

Abstract
We demonstrated a widely tunable Tm-doped mode-locked all-fiber laser, with the widest tunable range of 136 nm, from 1842 to 1978 nm. Nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) technique is employed to enable mode-locking and the wavelength-tunable operation. The widely tunable range attributes to the NPE-induced transmission modulation and bidirectional pumping mechanism. Such kind of tunable mode-locked laser can find various applications in optical communications, spectroscopy, time-resolved measurement, and among others.

Abstract
In this Letter, we demonstrate a graphene mode-locked, all-fiber Ho-doped fiber laser generating 1.3 nJ energy pulses directly from the oscillator. The graphene used as a saturable absorber was obtained via chemical vapor deposition on copper substrate and immersed in a poly(methyl methacrylate) support. The laser generated ultrashort soliton pulses at 2080 nm with bandwidth up to 6.1 nm. The influence of the output coupling ratio and the SA modulation depth on the mode-locking performance was also investigated.

Abstract
We report generation of ultra-broadband dissipative solitons and noise-like pulses from a simple, fully fiberized mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser. The oscillator operates in the normal net dispersion regime and is mode-locked via nonlinear polarization evolution. Depending on the cavity dispersion, the laser was capable of generating 60 nm or 100 nm broad dissipative solitons. These are the broadest spectra generated from a normal dispersion mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser so far. The same oscillator might also operate in the noise-like pulse regime with extremely broad emission spectra (over 300 nm), which also significantly outperforms the previous reports.

Abstract
Mid-infrared ultrafast fiber lasers are valuable for various applications, including chemical and biomedical sensing, material processing and military applications. Here, we report all-fiber high-power graphene mode-locked Tm/Ho co-doped fiber laser at long wavelength with evanescent field interaction. Ultrafast pulses up to 7.8 MHz are generated at a center wavelength of 1879.4 nm, with a pulse width of 4.7 ps. A graphene absorber integrated with a side-polished fiber can increase the damage threshold significantly. Harmonics mode-locking can be obtained till to the 21th harmonics at a pump power of above 500 mW. By using one stage amplifier in the anomalous dispersion regime, the laser can be amplified up to 450 mW and the narrowest pulse duration of 1.4 ps can be obtained simultaneously. Our work paves the way to graphene Tm/Ho co-doped mode-locked all-fiber master oscillator power amplifiers as potentially efficient and economic laser sources for high-power laser applications, such as special material processing and nonlinear optical studies.

Abstract
We demonstrate the use of an all-fiberized, mode-locked 1.94 μm laser with a saturable absorption device based on a tungsten disulfide (WS2)-deposited side-polished fiber. The WS2 particles were prepared via liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) without centrifugation. A series of measurements including Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed that the prepared particles had thick nanostructures of more than 5 layers. The prepared saturable absorption device used the evanescent field interaction mechanism between the oscillating beam and WS2 particles and its modulation depth was measured to be ~10.9% at a wavelength of 1925 nm. Incorporating the WS2-based saturable absorption device into a thulium-holmium co-doped fiber ring cavity, stable mode-locked pulses with a temporal width of ~1.3 ps at a repetition rate of 34.8 MHz were readily obtained at a wavelength of 1941 nm. The results of this experiment confirm that WS2 can be used as an effective broadband saturable absorption material that is suitable to passively generate pulses at 2 μm wavelengths.
