Saturable and two-photon absorption in zinc nanoparticles photodeposited onto the core of an optical fiber

Short-pulsed Q-switched fiber laser using graphene oxide quantum dots based as saturable absorber

In this work, we report the experimental study of a Q-switched optical fiber laser based on graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) as saturable absorber (SA). GOQDs are fabricated by carbonization and exfoliation electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers. The results of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) showed bands caused by the CHs and C[bond, double bond]O groups associated with the GOQDs. The Raman spectrum showed the typical G and D bands of GOQDs. The size of the GOQDs, calculated by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) was 6 nm; additionally, by high resolution TEM (HRTEM), an interplanar distance of 0.19 nm corresponding to the (002) direction of the graphene oxide was calculated. The SA was achieved using the photodeposition technique of the GOQDs onto the core of a single-mode optical fiber. The nonlinear characterization (NLC) of the GOQDs was carried out using the P-scan technique with a high-gain erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The obtained results showed a saturable absorption behavior with a value of β = - 1.178 x 10 - 6 ( m / W ) and a non-linear susceptibility of I m ( χ ( 3 ) ) ≈ - 1.573 x 10 - 7 ( e s u ) . The experimental results of the SA, based on GOQDs as a switching device in a fiber laser, showed a typical behavior of a Q-switched laser by generating a pulsed emission at a wavelength of 1599 nm, a frequency from 2 to 16 kHz, and a maximum average output power of 1.3 mW.

Monitoring the Growth of a Microbubble Generated Photothermally onto an Optical Fiber by Means Fabry-Perot Interferometry

In the present paper, we show the experimental measurement of the growth of a microbubble created on the tip of a single mode optical fiber, in which zinc nanoparticles were photodeposited on its core by using a single laser source to carry out both the generation of the microbubble by photothermal effect and the monitoring of the microbubble diameter. The photodeposition technique, as well as the formation of the microbubble, was carried out by using a single-mode pigtailed laser diode with emission at a wavelength of 658 nm. The microbubble's growth was analyzed in the time domain by the analysis of the Fabry-Perot cavity, whose diameter was calculated with the number of interference fringes visualized in an oscilloscope. The results obtained with this technique were compared with images obtained from a CCD camera, in order to verify the diameter of the microbubble. Therefore, by counting the interference fringes, it was possible to quantify the temporal evolution of the microbubble. As a practical demonstration, we proposed a vibrometer sensor using microbubbles with sizes of 83 and 175 µm as a Fabry-Perot cavity; through the time period of a full oscillation cycle of an interferogram observed in the oscilloscope, it was possible to know the frequency vibration (500 and 1500 Hz) for a cuvette where the microbubble was created.

Influence on the saturable absorption of the induced losses by photodeposition of zinc nanoparticles in an optical fiber

In this work, the influence of induced losses on the saturable absorption by zinc nanoparticles photodeposited onto the core of an optical fiber end is reported. Samples with different losses were obtained by the photodeposition technique using a continuous wave laser at 1550 nm. The nonlinear absorption of the saturable absorber was characterized by the P-scan technique using a high-gain pulsed erbium-doped fiber amplifier. The results have demonstrated that for optical fibers with variable induced losses by deposited nanoparticles, the modulation depth increases proportionally based on the nonlinear absorption coefficient. With induced losses fixed at 3 dB, it was demonstrated that the modulation depth increased as a function of the optical power used in the photodeposition process. The saturation intensity of the saturable absorber presents small shifts for higher intensities.
