Effects of high-repetition-rate femtosecond laser micromachining on the physical and chemical properties of polylactide (PLA)

A MAX phase (Ti3AlC2) as a performance enhancer for poly(lactic acid) electrospun membranes in steam generation and solar desalination

Clean water and sanitation issues motivate researchers to develop water evaporators for freshwater generation. The composite membrane evaporator was electrospun herein based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and Ti3AlC2 MAX phase as a property enhancer. As a precursor for the MXenes synthesis, the MAX phase has never been explored with PLA for water evaporator potential. Alternative use of the MAX phase can reduce the production cost arising from chemical synthesis. This work explored the potential of the MAX phase as an additive to enhance PLA membrane performance for steam generation and desalination applications. Under the infrared irradiation (∼1.0 kW/m2), the mechanically-improved PLA/MAX phase membrane showed an enhanced water evaporation rate of 1.70 kg/m2 h (93.93 % efficiency), with an approximately 52 % rate increment relative to the PLA membrane. Based on the artificial seawater (3.5 % w/w), the membrane exhibited an evaporation rate of 1.60 kg/m2 h (87.57 % efficiency). The membrane showed self-floating ability at the air-water interface, excellent thermal stability over the entire operating temperatures, and reusability after repeated cycles. Moreover, the generated freshwater contained exceptionally low cations concentrations, as low as those in potable water. The developed composite membrane also had proved its potential for solar desalination in the water generation field.

Development, Physiochemical characterization, Mechanical and Finite element analysis of 3D printed Polylactide-β-TCP/α-Al2O3 composite

Herein, material extrusion (MEX) technique is utilized to develop 3D printed models based on reinforcing β-Ca3(PO4)2/α-Al2O3 composite in polylactide (PLA) matrix. β-Ca3(PO4)2/α-Al2O3 composite has been synthesized through co-precipitation method and the phase content of β-Ca3(PO4)2 and α-Al2O3 components are respectively determined as 64 and 36 wt%. The resultant β-Ca3(PO4)2/α-Al2O3 composite mixed with PLA at various weight ratios were extruded as filaments and subsequently 3D printed into definite shapes for the physiochemical, morphological and mechanical evaluation. 3D printed bodies that comprise 5 wt % β-Ca3(PO4)2/α-Al2O3 composite yielded an increasing tensile, compressive and flexural strength in the corresponding order of ∼15, ∼15 and 22% than 3D printed pure PLA. Further, the Representative volume element (RVE) unit cells developed based on the various investigated compositions of PLA-β-Ca3(PO4)2/α-Al2O3 were subjected to mechanical evaluation through Finite element analysis (FEA) under both static and dynamic loading conditions on ASTM standard specimens. The results from experimental and FEA analysis demonstrated good uniformity that confirmed the reinforcement of 5 wt % β-Ca3(PO4)2/α-Al2O3 in PLA matrix as an optimum combination to yield better mechanical strength.

3D printed membranes of polylactic acid and graphene oxide for guided bone regeneration

We fabricated graphene oxide (GO)-incorporated polylactic acid (PLA) (GO-PLA) films by using three-dimensional (3D) printing to explore their potential benefits as barrier membranes for guided bone regeneration (GBR). Our results showed that the 3D printed GO-PLA films provided highly favorable matrices for preosteoblasts and accelerated new bone formation in rat calvarial bone defect models.

Selection Route of Precursor Materials in 3D Printing Composite Filament Development for Biomedical Applications

Additive manufacturing or 3D printing technologies might advance the fabrication sector of personalised biomaterials with high-tech precision. The selection of optimal precursor materials is considered the first key-step for the development of new printable filaments destined for the fabrication of products with diverse orthopaedic/dental applications. The selection route of precursor materials proposed in this study targeted two categories of materials: prime materials, for the polymeric matrix (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polylactic acid (PLA)); and reinforcement materials (natural hydroxyapatite (HA) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) of different dimensions). HA was isolated from bovine bones (HA particles size < 40 μm, <100 μm, and >125 μm) through a reproducible synthesis technology. The structural (FTIR-ATR, Raman spectroscopy), morphological (SEM), and, most importantly, in vitro (indirect and direct contact studies) features of all precursor materials were comparatively evaluated. The polymeric materials were also prepared in the form of thin plates, for an advanced cell viability assessment (direct contact studies). The overall results confirmed once again the reproducibility of the HA synthesis method. Moreover, the biological cytotoxicity assays established the safe selection of PLA as a future polymeric matrix, with GNP of grade M as a reinforcement and HA as a bioceramic. Therefore, the obtained results pinpointed these materials as optimal for future composite filament synthesis and the 3D printing of implantable structures.

Preparation of Surface-Supported Polylactide Spherical-Cap Particles

Biodegradable polymer particles are of considerable importance due to their multiple applications in medical diagnostics and therapy. Spherical-cap particles have been prepared in a very general and simple method by melting a thin polymer film supported on a solid substrate that is in contact with a hydrophilic solvent. The melted polymer forms droplets which transform into solid particles attached to the surface after cooling down the sample. This approach has been demonstrated for polylactide adlayers on glass, which, when melted in glycerol, produce an array of polymer particles supported on the surface. The size of the particles depends on the experimental conditions and ranges from tens of nanometers to several micrometers. The particles can be employed to incorporate guest species, for example, drug molecules or inorganic nanoparticles. This has been confirmed herein through entrapment of an anticancer drug (doxorubicin) and radiogold (Au-198) nanoparticles. The resulting structures have been examined using a number of complementary physicochemical techniques including scanning and transmission electron microscopy, atomic force and optical microscopy as well as Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy.

Graphene Infused Ecological Polymer Composites for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding and Heat Management Applications

In the age of mobile electronics and increased aerospace interest, multifunctional materials such as the polymer composites reported here are interesting alternatives to conventional materials, offering reduced cost and size of an electrical device packaging. We report a detailed study of an ecological and dual-functional polymer composite for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and heat management applications. We studied a series of polylactic acid/graphene nanoplatelet composites with six graphene nanoplatelet loadings, up to 15 wt%, and three different flake lateral sizes (0.2, 5 and 25 μm). The multifunctionality of the composites is realized via high EMI shielding efficiency exceeding 40 dB per 1 mm thick sample and thermal conductivity of 1.72 W/mK at 15 wt% nanofiller loading. The EMI shielding efficiency measurements were conducted in the microwave range between 0.2 to 12 GHz, consisting of the highly relevant X-band (8-12 GHz). Additionally, we investigate the influence of the nanofiller lateral size on the studied physical properties to optimize the studied functionalities per given nanofiller loading.

Laser Texturing as a Way of Influencing the Micromechanical and Biological Properties of the Poly(L-Lactide) Surface

Laser-based technologies are extensively used for polymer surface patterning and/or texturing. Different micro- and nanostructures can be obtained thanks to a wide range of laser types and beam parameters. Cell behavior on various types of materials is an extensively investigated phenomenon in biomedical applications. Polymer topography such as height, diameter, and spacing of the patterning will cause different cell responses, which can also vary depending on the utilized cell types. Structurization can highly improve the biological performance of the material without any need for chemical modification. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of CO₂ laser irradiation of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) thin films on the surface microhardness, roughness, wettability, and cytocompatibility. The conducted testing showed that CO₂ laser texturing of PLLA provides the ability to adjust the structural and physical properties of the PLLA surface to the requirements of the cells despite significant changes in the mechanical properties of the laser-treated surface polymer.

Polymer Labelling with a Conjugated Polymer-Based Luminescence Probe for Recycling in the Circular Economy

In this paper, we present the use of a disubstituted polyacetylene with high thermal stability and quantum yield as a fluorescence label for the identification, tracing, recycling, and eventually anti-counterfeiting applications of thermoplastics. A new method was developed for the dispersion of poly[1-phenyl-2-[p-(trimethylsilyl)phenyl]acetylene] (PTMSDPA) into polymer blends. For such purposes, four representative commodity plastics were selected, i.e., polypropylene, low-density polyethylene, poly(methyl methacrylate), and polylactide. Polymer recycling was mimicked by two reprocessing cycles of the material, which imparted intensive luminescence to the labelled polymer blends when excited by proper illumination. The concentration of the labelling polymer in the matrices was approximately a few tens ppm by weight. Luminescence was visible to the naked eye and survived the simulated recycling successfully. In addition, luminescence emission maxima were correlated with polymer polarity and glass transition temperature, showing a marked blueshift in luminescence emission maxima with the increase in processing temperature and time. This blueshift results from the dispersion of the labelling polymer into the labelled polymer matrix. During processing, the polyacetylene chains disentangled, thereby suppressing their intermolecular interactions. Moreover, shear forces imposed during viscous polymer melt mixing enforced conformational changes, which shortened the average conjugation length of PTMSDPA chain segments. Combined, these two mechanisms shift the luminescence of the probe from a solid- to a more solution-like state. Thus, PTMSDPA can be used as a luminescent probe for dispersion quality, polymer blend homogeneity, and processing history, in addition to the identification, tracing, and recycling of thermoplastics.

3D printed biodegradable functional temperature-stimuli shape memory polymer for customized scaffoldings

Shape memory polymers (SMPs) and their composites have become the prominent choice of the various industries owing to the unique inherent characteristics which can be stimulated through the exposure of external stimuli. The use of SMPs in the three-dimensional (3D) technologies has produced enormous advantages. However, the potential of SMPs in 3D printing has limitedly explored. In the present study, an investigation was performed to study the shape memory effect (SME) of the fused filament fabricated (FFF) chitosan (CS) reinforced poly-lactic-acid (PLA) based porous scaffolds. Firstly, the composite filaments, with 1, 1.5, and 2% wt. of CS, were fabricated by using the twin-screw extrusion process, which was later used to print the test specimens at different infill density. The printed samples were selectively pre-elongated to 2.5 mm and then processed through direct heating, at 60-70 °C, for enabling the SME. It has been observed that the CS particles acted as rigid phases and interrupted the re-ordering of PLA chain. However, the scaffoldings showed 18.8% shape recovery at optimized process parametric settings. In addition, wettability and biocompatibility analyses of developed scaffoldings have also been performed to investigate the biological aspects of the developed scaffoldings. The stimulated samples found to be possessed with good wettability and cell proliferation. Overall, the 3D printed PLA/CS porous scaffoldings have shown significant shape recovery characteristics and are biologically active to be used as self-healing implants for acute bone deficiencies.

Time-resolved measurements of optical properties in ultrafast laser interaction with polypropylene

Time-resolved, single-shot measurements are performed to determine the reflectance, transmittance, and absorptance in ultrafast laser interaction with polypropylene for a wide range of laser pulse energies. An ellipsoidal mirror is used to collect the majority of the reflected light, enabling the detection of plasma emission starting at about 40 ns after the incident pulse. The measured transmittance is explained by a model that takes into account different effective absorption channels, and the non-linear absorption coefficient is estimated, which suggests that the non-linear absorption originates from the two-step or two-photon absorption through overtone. The results are useful for selecting laser parameters in the processing of polymeric materials.

Upgrading prevascularization in tissue engineering: A review of strategies for promoting highly organized microvascular network formation

Functional and perfusable vascular network formation is critical to ensure the long-term survival and functionality of engineered tissues after their transplantation. Although several vascularization strategies have been reviewed in past, the significance of microvessel organization in three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds has been largely ignored. Advances in high-resolution microscopy and image processing have revealed that the majority of tissues including cardiac, skeletal muscle, bone, and skin contain highly organized microvessels that orient themselves to align with tissue architecture for optimum molecular exchange and functional performance. Here, we review strategies to develop highly organized and mature vascular networks in engineered tissues, with a focus on electromechanical stimulation, surface topography, micro scaffolding, surface-patterning, microfluidics and 3D printing. This review will provide researchers with state of the art approaches to engineer vascularized functional tissues for diverse applications. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Vascularization is one of the critical challenges facing tissue engineering. Recent technological advances have enabled researchers to develop microvascular networks in engineered tissues. Although far from translational applications, current vascularization strategies have shown promising outcomes. This review emphasizes the most recent technological advances and future challenges for developing organized microvascular networks in vitro. The next critical step is to achieve highly perfusable, dense, mature and organized microvascular networks representative of native tissues.

Diverse nature of femtosecond laser ablation of poly(L-lactide) and the influence of filamentation on the polymer crystallization behaviour

Over the past few years we have witnessed growing interest in ultrafast laser micromachining of bioresorbable polymers for fabrication of medical implants and surface modification. In this paper we show that surface structuring of poly(L-lactide) with 300 fs laser pulses at 515 and 1030 nm wavelength leads to formation of defects inside the polymer as a result of laser beam filamentation. Filament-induced channels have diameter around 1 μm and length of hundreds of micrometers. SEM images of microchannels cross-sections are presented. The influence of wavelength and pulse spacing on bulk modification extent was investigated and parameters limiting filamentation were determined. We show that filamentation can be used for controlling properties of PLLA. The presence of filament-induced modifications such as empty microchannels and pressure wave-induced stress lead to increased ability of polymer to crystallize at lower temperature. Crystallization behaviour and crystal morphology after laser treatment was investigated in details using different analytical techniques such as WAXD, DSC and FTIR/ATR. Hydrolytic degradation experiment was performed. Presented method can be applied for controllable, spatially distributed modification of polymer crystallinity, crystalline phase structure and hydrolytic degradation profile.

Laser Surface Microstructuring of a Bio-Resorbable Polymer to Anchor Stem Cells, Control Adipocyte Morphology, and Promote Osteogenesis

New strategies in regenerative medicine include the implantation of stem cells cultured in bio-resorbable polymeric scaffolds to restore the tissue function and be absorbed by the body after wound healing. This requires the development of appropriate micro-technologies for manufacturing of functional scaffolds with controlled surface properties to induce a specific cell behavior. The present report focuses on the effect of substrate topography on the behavior of human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) before and after co-differentiation into adipocytes and osteoblasts. Picosecond laser micromachining technology (PLM) was applied on poly (L-lactide) (PLLA), to generate different microstructures (microgrooves and microcavities) for investigating cell shape, orientation, and MSCs co-differentiation. Under certain surface topographical conditions, MSCs modify their shape to anchor at specific groove locations. Upon MSCs differentiation, adipocytes respond to changes in substrate height and depth by adapting the intracellular distribution of their lipid vacuoles to the imposed physical constraints. In addition, topography alone seems to produce a modest, but significant, increase of stem cell differentiation to osteoblasts. These findings show that PLM can be applied as a high-efficient technology to directly and precisely manufacture 3D microstructures that guide cell shape, control adipocyte morphology, and induce osteogenesis without the need of specific biochemical functionalization.

Reprocessing of PLA/Graphene Nanoplatelets Nanocomposites

This work reports a study on the effect of multiple reprocessing on the properties of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) filled with graphene nanoplatelets (GnP) compared to the melt reprocessed neat polymeric matrix. In particular, morphological, X-Ray Diffraction and Micro-Raman analyses, intrinsic viscosity measurements, thermal, rheological and mechanical tests were carried out on materials reprocessed up five times by means of a single screw extruder. The results indicated that the presence of GnP decreased the degradation rate as a function of the reprocessing cycles in comparison with the neat PLA that, on the contrary, showed a more drastic reduction of the molecular weight. Moreover, the reprocessing improved the particle dispersion and reduced the presence of GnP aggregates.

Quantitative Analysis of Polyacrylamide Grafted on Polylactide Film Surfaces Employing Spectroscopic Techniques

Standard techniques for quantitative measurement of polyacrylamide (PAm) contents grafted on polylactide (PLA) film substrates, P(LA- g-Am- co-MBAm), which are commonly used as cell culture substrates or scaffolds, and pH-sensitive absorbents have been developed with X-ray photoelectron (XPS), proton-nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H-NMR), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The techniques are then applied to examine P(LA- g-Am- co-MBAm) samples prepared from two separate photo-initiator/co-initiator systems. Efficiency and accuracy of the techniques are compared. The results from all techniques are in good agreement, indicating high analysis precisions, although FT-IR technique provides additional advantages, in terms of short analysis time, ease of sample preparation, and accessibility of a machine. The results indicate that the riboflavin (RF) initiator system has higher grafting efficiency than its camphorquinone (CQ) counterpart. These standard techniques can be applied in the analysis of these materials and further modified for quantitative analysis of other grafting systems.

Development and Characterization of Photoinduced Acrylamide-Grafted Polylactide Films for Biomedical Applications

Surface grafting of biodegradable/biocompatible polylactide (PLA) films by a UV-assisted reaction has been developed by employing a hydrophilic acrylamide (Am) monomer, an N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAm) cross-linker, and a camphorquinone (CQ)/N,N′-dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate (DMAEMA) photoinitiator/coinitiator system. The accomplishment of the process is confirmed by FTIR and XPS analyses. Physicochemical changes of the grafted PLA films are evaluated in terms of chemical structures, radiation-induced degradation followed by crystallization, morphology, thermal properties, and mechanical behavior. The results reveal that a low degree of PLA degradation through chain scission is observed in both blank and grafted PLA films. This generates more polar chain ends that can further induce crystallization. Results from contact angle measurements indicate that the grafted films have higher hydrophilicity and pH-responsive behavior. The incorporation of PAm on the film’s surface and the induced crystallization lead to improvements in certain aspects of mechanical properties of the films. The materials have high potential for use in biomedical and environmental applications, such as cell culture substrates or scaffolds or pH-sensitive absorbents.

Fabrication of a composite of nanocrystalline carbonated hydroxyapatite (cHAP) with polylactic acid (PLA) and its surface topographical structuring with direct laser writing (DLW)

The fabrication of a polylactic acid (PLA)–carbonated hydroxyapatite (cHAP) composite material from synthesised phase pure nano-cHAP and melted PLA by mechanical mixing at 220–235 °C has been developed in this study.
