A MAX phase (Ti3AlC2) as a performance enhancer for poly(lactic acid) electrospun membranes in steam generation and solar desalination

Clean water and sanitation issues motivate researchers to develop water evaporators for freshwater generation. The composite membrane evaporator was electrospun herein based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and Ti3AlC2 MAX phase as a property enhancer. As a precursor for the MXenes synthesis, the MAX phase has never been explored with PLA for water evaporator potential. Alternative use of the MAX phase can reduce the production cost arising from chemical synthesis. This work explored the potential of the MAX phase as an additive to enhance PLA membrane performance for steam generation and desalination applications. Under the infrared irradiation (∼1.0 kW/m2), the mechanically-improved PLA/MAX phase membrane showed an enhanced water evaporation rate of 1.70 kg/m2 h (93.93 % efficiency), with an approximately 52 % rate increment relative to the PLA membrane. Based on the artificial seawater (3.5 % w/w), the membrane exhibited an evaporation rate of 1.60 kg/m2 h (87.57 % efficiency). The membrane showed self-floating ability at the air-water interface, excellent thermal stability over the entire operating temperatures, and reusability after repeated cycles. Moreover, the generated freshwater contained exceptionally low cations concentrations, as low as those in potable water. The developed composite membrane also had proved its potential for solar desalination in the water generation field.

MXene/Cellulose Composite Cloth for Integrated Functions (if-Cloth) in Personal Heating and Steam Generation

Given the abundant solar light available on our planet, it is promising to develop an advanced fabric capable of simultaneously providing personal thermal management and facilitating clean water production in an energy-efficient manner. In this study, we present the fabrication of a photothermally active, biodegradable composite cloth composed of titanium carbide MXene and cellulose, achieved through an electrospinning method. This composite cloth exhibits favorable attributes, including chemical stability, mechanical performance, structural flexibility, and wettability. Notably, our 0.1-mm-thick composite cloth (RC/MXene IV) raises the temperature of simulated skin by 5.6 °C when compared to a commercially available cotton cloth, which is five times thicker under identical ambient conditions. Remarkably, the composite cloth (RC/MXene V) demonstrates heightened solar light capture efficiency (87.7%) when in a wet state instead of a dry state. Consequently, this cloth functions exceptionally well as a high-performance steam generator, boasting a superior water evaporation rate of 1.34 kg m-2 h-1 under one-sun irradiation (equivalent to 1000 W m-2). Moreover, it maintains its performance excellence in solar desalination processes. The multifunctionality of these cloths opens doors to a diverse array of outdoor applications, including solar-driven water evaporation and personal heating, thereby enriching the scope of integrated functionalities for textiles.

Biomass-based materials for solar-powered seawater evaporation

Clean and safe water is crucial to maintaining human life on earth. Solar-powered seawater desalination (SSD) is a promising and feasible way to use solar energy resources to overcome water scarcity. Among all the candidate materials for solar seawater evaporators, biomass-based materials stand out thanks to their excellent inherent natural structure, ease of preparation, low cost, and abundant resources. In this article, we review biomass-based materials, from angiosperms, algae, and fungi to animal materials and other atypical biomass materials, proposed for solar-powered seawater evaporation in the shape of the nanofluid, membrane, gels, composite sponge structures, composites Janus structures and other composites. The approaches for improving biomass-based solar seawater evaporators (BSSE) performance are emphasized, including optical absorption regulation, system thermal management optimization, adequate water supply, salt resistance, and effective steam condensate recovery. In the end, the opportunities and challenges of biomass-based materials for SSD are illustrated.

Solar-assisted fabrication of dimpled 2H-MoS2 membrane for highly efficient water desalination

Solar-driven evaporation has been proposed as an efficient way to harvest solar energy for water treatment and desalination. However, the complex preparation process and the degradation of photothermal absorbers restrict their practical applications in solar thermal technology. Herein, a solar-assisted fabrication of three-dimensional dimpled MoS₂ membrane (DMM-SA) with an open macroporous (1-2 μm) network is fabricated by folding and overlapping nanosheets under solar illumination. DMM-SA exhibits superior water permeability (334-461 LMH/bar) and extraordinary chemical and structural stability. Compared to the 1T and mixed-phase DMM-SA samples, 2H-DMM-SA floating on the water surface generates high heat localization and achieves high evaporation efficiencies of 83.8 ± 0.8% and 91.5 ± 1.1% at 1 and 3 sun illumination, respectively. After multiple illumination and regeneration cycles, 2H-DMM-SA presents high water evaporation and salt rejection performance. After desalination, the salinity level of permeate water is far below the World Health Organization (WHO) standard. Numerical simulations verify that the inner spaces between two nanosheets and the nanochannels contribute to the high bulk water and vapor fluxes during desalination. The facile and efficient design of 3D 2H-DMM-SA provides a novel avenue for seawater utilization by harvesting solar energy.
