In situ monitoring of thin alumina passive film growth by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) during an electrochemical process

This article presents a sensing technique to characterize the growth of an alumina passive film on an aluminum micro structured layer in situ. The technique uses surface plasmon resonance (SPR) on aluminum coated gratings with spectroscopic measurements during electrochemical polarization in 0.02M Na2SO4. The structure of the sensor was first simulated and then fabricated by photolithography. The grating was then replicated by nanoimprint (NIL) in Sol-Gel before pure aluminum layer was deposited by RF magnetron sputtering to produce the samples used in this study. Coupled plasmonic and electrochemical measurements confirmed the feasibility of in situ characterization (thickness) of alumina passive film on aluminum-based gratings in neutral aqueous media. Combining both measurements with an appropriated SPR spectrum fitting lead to alumina thickness monitoring within a few nanometers' accuracy. The objectives and challenges of this study are to better characterize the alumina growth during electrochemical process combining in situ electrochemical process and SPR spectra in order to determine thin passive layer characteristics.

Bubble dynamics in thin liquid films and breakup at drop impact

A liquid drop impacting on a smooth surface heated above the boiling point and below the Leidenfrost temperature spreads over the surface forming a thin liquid film. We observed bubble nuclei originating at the first contact of a liquid with a heated sapphire surface, and the formation of a thin liquid film with one layer of microbubbles. In the present paper, we describe in detail the bubble dynamics for the substrate temperature ranging from 130 to 170 °C. The thickness of the liquid film is estimated to vary within the range from 40 to 80 μm at We = 76 and an advancing contact angle of 76°. We have detected how bubbles break the film, which is followed by dry patch propagation and sessile droplet formation, and elucidated the mechanism of spontaneous liquid film breakup. The bubble coalescence and waves induced by the rollback flow from the lamella periphery or by reversible bubble bursting are the reason for irreversible hole formation.

Navigation of Silver/Carbon Nanoantennas in Organic Fluids Explored by a Two-Wave Mixing

Within this work are analyzed third-order nonlinear optical properties with a potential influence on the dynamic mechanics exhibited by metal/carbon nanofluids. The nanofluids were integrated by multiwall carbon nanotubes decorated with Ag nanoparticles suspended in ethanol or in acetone. Optical third-order nonlinearities were experimentally explored by vectorial two-wave mixing experiments with a Nd-YAG laser system emitting nanosecond pulses at a 532 nm wavelength. An optically induced birefringence in the metal/organic samples seems to be responsible for a significant modification in density and compressibility modulus in the nanosystems. The measured nonlinear refractive index was associated with a thermal process together with changes in density, compressibility modulus and speed of sound in the samples. Nanofluid diffusivity was studied to characterize the dynamic concentration gradients related to the precipitation of nanostructures in the liquid solutions. The evolution of the nanoparticle density suspended in the nanofluids was considered as a temporal-resolved probabilistic system. It is stated that the incorporation of Ag nanoparticles in carbon nanotubes produces strong mechanical changes in carbon-based nanofluids. According to numerical simulations and optical evaluations, immediate applications for developing dynamic nanoantennas optical logic gates and quantum-controlled metal/carbon systems can be contemplated.

Surface Plasmon Resonance Based Temperature Sensors in Liquid Environment

The aim of this work is to measure the temperature variations by analyzing the plasmon signature on a metallic surface that is periodically structured and immersed in a liquid. A change in the temperature of the sample surface induces a modification of the local refractive index leading to a shift of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) frequency due to the strong interaction between the evanescent electric field and the metallic surface. The experimental set-up used in this study to detect the refractive index changes is based on a metallic grating permitting a direct excitation of a plasmon wave, leading to a high sensibility, high-temperature range and contactless sensor within a very compact and simple device. The experimental set-up demonstrated that SPR could be used as a non-invasive, high-resolution temperature measurement method for metallic surfaces.
