Spectrally pure single photons at telecommunications wavelengths using commercial birefringent optical fiber

Tailoring the spectro-temporal mode of photon pairs generated from interspatial-mode four-wave mixing

We investigate the spectro-temporal mode property of the photon pairs generated via interspatial-mode spontaneous four-wave mixing (FWM) in a few-mode fiber (FMF) that supports two linearly polarized spatial modes in the 1550 nm telecom band. The two pulsed pumps for the process are in distinct spatial modes, while the created signal and idler photon pairs are also occupying different spatial modes. By exploiting the unique inter-mode phase matching condition in the FMF, we can tailor the spectro-temporal mode structure of the photon pairs by changing the pulse duration (spectral bandwidth) of the two pumps. Especially, photon pairs with a nearly round-shaped factorable joint spectrum are experimentally realized. The techniques are valuable for generating and manipulating quantum states in multi-mode waveguides and exploiting the spatial degree of freedom in quantum information processing.

Single-photon sources based on stepwise optimized binary-tree multiplexers

We propose a spatially multiplexed single-photon source where the structure of the applied binary-tree multiplexer is optimized systematically during its construction. Along the building procedure of this type of multiplexer, the position of a binary photon router appended to the tree in a step of the expansion is determined by taking into account the current achievable single-photon probability of the source. The method chooses the position where this probability is maximal. We determine the stepwise optimized binary-tree multiplexers for experimentally realizable values of the loss parameters, and for a fixed number of routers. The method is scalable, that is, it is possible to determine the multiplexer with an optimal structure for any number of photon routers. We show that single-photon sources based on stepwise optimized binary-tree multiplexers yield higher single-photon probabilities than single-photon sources based on any spatial multiplexer types discussed in the literature thus far in the considered ranges of the loss parameters.

Generation of infrared photon pairs by spontaneous four-wave mixing in a CS2-filled microstructured optical fiber

We experimentally demonstrate frequency non-degenerate photon-pair generation via spontaneous four-wave mixing from a novel CS2-filled microstructured optical fiber. CS2 has high nonlinearity, narrow Raman lines, a broad transmission spectrum, and also has a large index contrast with the microstructured silica fiber. We can achieve phase matching over a large spectral range by tuning the pump wavelength, allowing the generation of idler photons in the infrared region, which is suitable for applications in quantum spectroscopy. Moreover, we demonstrate a coincidence-to-accidental ratio of larger than 90 and a pair generation efficiency of about [Formula: see text] per pump pulse, which shows the viability of this fiber-based platform as a photon-pair source for quantum technology applications.

Single-photon sources based on incomplete binary-tree multiplexers with optimal structure

We consider novel types of spatially multiplexed single-photon sources based on output-extended incomplete binary-tree multiplexers containing general asymmetric routers where the construction of the multiplexers takes into account the total transmission efficiencies of the multiplexer arms at which a novel router can be added to the system. After selecting the multiplexer that outperforms the others, we identify the ranges of the loss parameters for which the application of the selected multiplexer leads to single-photon sources with higher single-photon probabilities and lower multiphoton noise than that can be achieved by using asymmetric multiplexers. We show that using the selected multiplexer is especially advantageous in the case of single-mode sources characterized by thermal statistics of the input photon pairs. We also reveal that the application of this multiplexer yields high performance single-photon sources even for suboptimal system sizes that is a typical situation in current experiments.

Theoretical investigation of pure-state single-photon and large-bandwidth-correlation biphoton generation from micro/nanofiber

Pure-state single photons and large-bandwidth-correlation biphotons are fundamental resources for quantum information processing. The dispersion properties of micro/nanofiber (MNF) can be tailored by carefully choosing its diameter, resulting in a flexibly tailored biphoton spectrum. We theoretically investigate pure-state single photons and large-bandwidth-correlation biphotons produced by degenerate spontaneous four-wave mixing in MNF. In our simulation, a single-photon state with a purity of 99% will be theoretically attained by choosing the appropriate pump bandwidth and center wavelength with respect to the diameter and length of the MNF. Further, when an appropriate diameter with a negligible curvature at the zero dispersion wavelength is chosen, even a narrow pump bandwidth is capable of motivating remarkably broadband correlation biphotons, e.g., for a MNF diameter of 0.7 μm, the theoretical full width at half maximum is 473 nm. In practice, the application of a MNF-based quantum light source is dependent on the technologies that precisely control and measure the diameter. Our theoretical investigation will guide the experimental realization of high-quality quantum light sources based on MNF.

Spatially multiplexed single-photon sources based on incomplete binary-tree multiplexers

We propose two novel types of spatially multiplexed single-photon sources based on incomplete binary-tree multiplexers. The incomplete multiplexers are extensions of complete binary-tree multiplexers, and they contain incomplete branches either at the input or at the output of them. We analyze and optimize these systems realized with general asymmetric routers and photon-number-resolving detectors by applying a general statistical theory introduced previously that includes all relevant loss mechanisms. We show that the use of any of the two proposed multiplexing systems can lead to higher single-photon probabilities than that achieved with complete binary-tree multiplexers. Single-photon sources based on output-extended incomplete binary-tree multiplexers outperform those based on input-extended ones in the considered parameter ranges, and they can in principle yield single-photon probabilities higher than 0.93 when they are realized by state-of-the-art bulk optical elements. We show that the application of the incomplete binary-tree approach can significantly improve the performance of the multiplexed single-photon sources for suboptimal system sizes that is a typical situation in current experiments.

Spectrally pure photons generated in a quasi-phase matched xenon-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber

Spectrally pure photons heralded from unentangled photon pair sources are crucial for any quantum optical system reliant on the multiplexing of heralded photons from independent sources. Generation of unentangled photon pairs in gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers specifically remains an attractive architecture for integration into quantum-optical fiber networks. The dispersion design offered by selection of fiber microstructures and gas pressure allows considerable control over the group-velocity profile which dictates the wavelengths of photon pairs that can be generated without spectral entanglement. Here, we expand on this design flexibility, which has previously been implemented for four-wave mixing, by modeling the use of a static, periodically poled electric field to achieve an effective quasi-phase-matched three-wave mixing nonlinearity that creates spontaneous parametric downconversion. Electric-field-induced quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric downconversion enables control of phase matching conditions that is independent of the group velocity, allowing phase matching at arbitrary wavelengths without affecting the entanglement of photons at those wavelengths. This decoupling of entanglement engineering and phase matching facilitates spectrally pure photon pair generation with efficiency and wavelength-tunability that is otherwise unprecedented.

Fiber-based biphoton source with ultrabroad frequency tunability

Tunable biphotons are highly important for a wide range of quantum applications. For some applications, especially interesting are cases where two photons of a pair are far apart in frequency. Here, we report a tunable biphoton source based on a xenon-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. Tunability is achieved by adjusting the pressure of the gas inside the fiber. This allows us to tailor the dispersion landscape of the fiber, overcoming the principal limitations of solid-core fiber-based biphoton sources. We report a maximum tunability of 120 THz for a pressure range of 4 bar with a continuous shift of 30 THz/bar. At 21 bar, the photons of a pair are separated by more than one octave. Despite the large separation, both photons have large bandwidths. At 17 bar, they form a very broad (110 THz) band around the frequency of the pump.
