Plasmonic sensors based on tilted Bragg gratings in multicore optical fibers

Homemade low-cost fabrication technique and stability analysis of a U-shaped fiber sensor structure

In this work, the fabrication method of a U-shaped optical fiber (UOF) structure using single-mode fiber is proposed. Few UOF sensors have been developed to date, but the fabrication process has not been described in detail. Here, its subsequent homemade fabrication, optimization strategies, and analysis are thoroughly explored. Further, the influence of transmission on U-shaped diameter is explored. The transmitted intensity is mainly used to assess the strength of the evanescent field. For this purpose, three different diameters of 2 mm, 4 mm, and 6 mm UOFs are fabricated. The results show that the transmission of the U-shaped structure is dependent on the diameter of the UOF. Thereafter, different concentrations of glucose solutions are detected using the optimized stable UOF structure to showcase the sensing properties. Overall, this work is essential for beginners who want to conduct research on optical fiber sensors with a curved shape.

Recent advances in surface plasmon resonance imaging and biological applications

Surface Plasmon Resonance Imaging (SPRI) is a robust technique for visualizing refractive index changes, which enables researchers to observe interactions between nanoscale objects in an imaging manner. In the past period, scholars have been attracted by the Prism-Coupled and Non-prism Coupled configurations of SPRI and have published numerous experimental results. This review describes the principle of SPRI and discusses recent developments in Prism-Coupled and Non-prism Coupled SPRI techniques in detail, respectively. And then, major advances in biological applications of SPRI are reviewed, including four sub-fields (cells, viruses, bacteria, exosomes, and biomolecules). The purpose is to briefly summarize the recent advances of SPRI and provide an outlook on the development of SPRI in various fields.

Novel Optical Fiber-Based Structures for Plasmonics Sensors

Optical fiber sensors based on surface plasma technology have many unique advantages in specific applications such as extreme environmental monitoring, physical parameter determination, and biomedical indicators testing. In recent decades, various kinds of fiber probes with special structures were developed according to special processing such as tapering, splicing, etching, fiber balls, grating etc. In this paper, the fabrication technology, characteristics, development status and application scenarios of different special optical fiber structures are briefly reviewed, including common processing equipment. Furthermore, many special novel optical fiber structures reported in recent years are summarized, which have been used in various kinds of plasmonic sensing work. Then, the fiber-plasmonic sensors for practical applications are also introduced and examined in detail. The main aim of this review is to provide guidance and inspiration for researchers to design and fabricate special optical fiber structures, thus facilitating their further research.

Phase interrogation of plasmonic tilted fiber Bragg grating biosensors through the Jones formalism

Gold-coated tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBG) are refined plasmonic biosensors, highly sensitive to surrounding refractive index (RI) changes. Their interrogation usually relies on insertion loss measurements for single input polarized light, limiting the set of exploitable features. To overcome this limitation, we trigger the Jones formalism to retrieve the polarization enabling optimized plasmonic excitation for both phase and amplitude measurements. We present an experimental phase shift with a sensitivity as high as 45835^°/RIU and further assess this approach to HER2 proteins sensing at 1µg/ml. We compare this angular modality with the one relying on the insertion loss using a quality factor that takes the shift as well as the dispersion into account. This strengthens its relevance in terms of precision for ultra-small RI variations.

Multicore Fiber Bending Sensors with High Sensitivity Based on Asymmetric Excitation Scheme

Bending sensing was realized by constructing a tapered four-core optical fiber (TFCF) sensor. The four-core fiber (FCF) between the fan-in and fan-out couplers was tapered and the diameter became smaller, so that the distance between the four cores arranged in a square became gradually smaller to produce supermodes. The two ends of the TFCF were respectively connected to the fan-in and fan-out couplers so that the individual cores in the FCF could link to the separate single-mode fibers. A broadband light source (superluminescent diodes (SLD)) spanning 1250-1650 nm was injected into any one of the four cores, and the orientation was thus determined. In the tapering process, the remaining three cores gradually approached the excitation core in space to excite several supermodes based on the tri-core structure first, and then transited to the quadruple-core structure. The field distributions of the excited supermodes were asymmetric due to the corner-core excitation scheme, and the interference thus resulted in a higher measurement sensitivity. When the diameter of the TFCF was 7.5 μm and the tapered length was 2.21 mm, the sensitivity of the bending sensor could reach 16.12 nm/m-1.

A method for the controllable fabrication of optical fiber-based localized surface plasmon resonance sensors

Optical fiber-based Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (OF-LSPR) biosensors have emerged as an ultra-sensitive miniaturized tool for a great variety of applications. Their fabrication by the chemical immobilization of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on the optic fiber end face is a simple and versatile method. However, it can render poor reproducibility given the number of parameters that influence the binding of the AuNPs. In order to develop a method to obtain OF-LSPR sensors with high reproducibility, we studied the effect that factors such as temperature, AuNPs concentration, fiber core size and time of immersion had on the number and aggregation of AuNPs on the surface of the fibers and their resonance signal. Our method consisted in controlling the deposition of a determined AuNPs density on the tip of the fiber by measuring its LSPR signal (or plasmonic signal, Sp) in real-time. Sensors created thus were used to measure changes in the refractive index of their surroundings and the results showed that, as the number of AuNPs on the probes increased, the changes in the Sp maximum values were ever lower but the wavelength shifts were higher. These results highlighted the relevance of controlling the relationship between the sensor composition and its performance.

Advances in Multicore Fiber Grating Sensors

In recent years, multicore fiber (MCF) has attracted increasing interest for sensing applications, due to its unique fiber structure of multiple parallel cores in a single fiber cladding, which offers a flexible configurable platform to establish diverse functional fiber devices for sensing applications. So far, a variety of discrete fiber sensors using MCF have been developed, among which one of the major categories is the MCF grating sensors. The most distinct characteristic of MCF that differs from the normal single mode fibers is that the off-center cores of a MCF are sensitive to bending, which is caused by the bending induced tangential strain in off-center waveguides through either compression or stretching. The bending sensitivity has been widely developed for bending/curvature sensing or measuring physical parameters that are associated with bending. In this paper, we review the research progress on MCF-based fiber grating sensors. MCF-based diverse fiber grating sensors will be introduced, whose working principles will be discussed, and various types of applications of the MCF grating sensors will be summarized. Finally, the challenges and prospects of MCF grating for sensing applications will be presented.

Partially gold-coated tilted FBGs for enhanced surface biosensing

To date, there is clear experimental evidence that gold-coated tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs) are highly sensitive plasmonic biosensors that provide temperature-compensated detection of analytes at concentrations in the picomolar range. As most optical biosensors, they bring an evanescent wave in the surrounding medium, which makes them sensitive to both surface refractive index variations (= the useful biosensing signal) and to bulk refractive index changes (= the non-useful signal for biosensing). This dual sensitivity makes them prone to drift. In this work, we study partially gold-coated TFBGs around their cross-section. These gratings present the ability to discriminate both volume and surface refractive index changes, which is interesting in biosensing to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio. The effects induced in the TFBGs transmitted amplitude spectra were analyzed for surrounding refractive index (SRI) changes in the range 1.3360-1.3370. Then, the gold film was biofunctionalized with human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER2) aptamers using thiol chemistry. The detection of HER2 proteins (a relevant cancer biomarker) at 10^-9 g/mL, 10^-8 g/mL and 10^-6 g/mL demonstrated the advantage to identify environmental perturbations through the bare area of the TFBGs, which is left not functionalized. The non-specific drifts that could exist in samples are eliminated and a wavelength shift only related to the surface modification is obtained.

Overview and emerging trends in optical fiber aptasensing

Optical fiber biosensors have attracted growing interest over the last decade and quickly became a key enabling technology, especially for the detection of biomarkers at extremely low concentrations and in small volumes. Among the many and recent fiber-optic sensing amenities, aptamers-based sensors have shown unequalled performances in terms of ease of production, specificity, and sensitivity. The immobilization of small and highly stable bioreceptors such as DNA has bolstered their use for the most varied applications e.g., medical diagnosis, food safety and environmental monitoring. This review highlights the recent advances in aptamer-based optical fiber biosensors. An in-depth analysis of the literature summarizes different fiber-optic structures and biochemical strategies for molecular detection and immobilization of receptors over diverse surfaces. In this review, we analyze the features offered by those sensors and discuss about the next challenges to be addressed. This overview investigates both biochemical and optical parameters, drawing the guiding lines for forthcoming innovations and prospects in this ever-growing field of research.
