Abstract
In our earlier work (Chem. Phys. Letts. 592 (2014) 149-154), a new broad band was observed in the near infrared region (700-900nm) of the steady state absorption spectra of some metalloporphyrins (zinc tetraphenylporphyrin, zinc octaethylporphyrin and magnesium octaethylporphyrin) in aromatic solvents (chlorobenzene, 1,2-dichlorobenzene, benzonitrile, benzene and toluene) at high concentrations (~10-4molL-1). The band was ascribed to be due to ground state charge transfer complexation between solute and solvent molecules. In the present work, density functional theory calculations are carried out to study the possibility of such ground state charge transfer complex formation between zinc tetraphenylporphyrin and four aromatic solvents viz., benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene and benzonitrile with 1:1 and 2:1 solvent-solute stoichiometries. Also, we determined the association constants for the ground state charge transfer complex formation of zinc tetraphenylporphyrin and zinc octaethylporphyrin with two aromatic solvents (benzene and benzonitrile) by Benesi-Hildebrand method.

Abstract
The effects of solvents on the conformation of hemin and their implications on the dynamics of the complex have been studied using the time-resolved optical Kerr effect (OKE) with 35 fs laser pulses (at a central wavelength of 800 nm). The OKE enabled estimation to be made of the third-order nonlinear electronic susceptibility (χ(3)) of hemin solutions: it was found to be significantly smaller than that in hemin thin films. The real and imaginary components of χ(3) were negative in both the solvents, suggesting that one-photon as well as two-photon absorption processes contribute to the nonlinear electronic susceptibility of hemin. Our study of the ultrafast heme dynamics not only unveils the instantaneous electronic response related to electronic susceptibility but also brings to the fore a novel libration process that has hitherto remained undetected. The hindered rotation in the femtosecond domain that may be responsible for this libration process possibly stems from π-π hemin oligomers formed in aqueous solution. The present results provide new insights into the conformational dynamics in the self-assembly of heme oligomers that may also be significant in certain pathogenic conditions where free heme is formed in biological systems.

Abstract
The two-photon absorption (TPA) properties of two newly synthesized substituted porphyrins: 5,10,15,20-tetra-(4-pyrrolidinylphenyl)porphyrin (1) and 5,10,15,20-tetra-(4-diphenylamino-benzoic acid phenyl) porphyrin ester (3) were measured by the femtosecond Z-scan technique at 800 nm Ti : sapphire laser and by direct nonlinear optical transmission (NLT) using nanosecond Nd : YAG laser. The substituent effects, pumped wavelength and the environment upon the molecular TPA cross-section were investigated. It is found that the TPA cross-section for 3 is enhanced under excitation of 800 nm, relative to its precursor, 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-hydroxyphenyl) porphyrin (2), due to the former possessing extension conjugation of "D-A-core-A-D" molecular architecture. Also sample 3 obtained an increased TPA cross-section in rigid film relative to that in solution, suggesting that the enhancement is facilitated by the quasi-planar structure which allows direct interbranch conjugation throughout the molecule.

Abstract
[Structure: see text]. Syntheses of soluble tetrabenzoporphyrins (TBP) and tetranaphtho[2,3]porphyrins (TNP), with multiple substituents in the conjugated aromatic rings but bearing no substituents in the meso-positions, is reported. Both types of porphyrins were obtained by direct aromatization of precursor porphyrins, annealed with either cyclohexene or dihydronaphthalene fragments. TBPs and TNPs possess powerful absorption bands in the near-infrared (lambda = 610-710 nm, epsilon = 100,000-300,000 M(-1) cm(-1)) and exhibit strong luminescence. Free bases and Zn complexes fluoresce with quantum yields of up to 50%, whereas Pd and Pt complexes phosphoresce in solutions at ambient temperatures. Remarkably, the phosphorescence quantum yields of Pd and Pt TBPs reach as high as 20-50%, which places them among the brightest near-infrared phosphors known to date.

Abstract
Using a near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM), crystals of zinc-porphyrin network materials are characterized with respect to morphology and fluorescence. Needle-shaped crystals are observed. While the topography is flat, the fluorescence intensity profile in the width direction is approximately triangular. A numerical calculation shows that differences between the topographic and optical images cannot be due to an artifact. In some needle-shaped crystals, the fluorescence emission is strongly peaked at one or both ends, possibly indicating a polar crystal structure.
