Selective plasmonic trapping of nano-particles by Archimedes metalens

Optical tweezer is a non-invasive method for optical force tool applied in various fields like biology, physics, and lab on chip manipulation. The Archimedean helix shape is ideal for creating chiral nanostructures, and being able to generate plasmonic focused hotspot field for optical trapping. Here we design a metal disk with the Archimedean shape to own the ability of selective trapping nanoparticles based on the spin-orbit interactions with circularly polarized light. The plasmonic near field on the metalens can be designed by adjusting the geometric parameter flexibly. We numerically analyze the optimal size and screw pitch of the metal disk to realize the switch modulation of hotspot generation, and then demonstrate the novel switchable optical trapping ability in the view of optical force and potential well analysis under the circularly polarized light excitation by a 532 nm laser. The work shows significant potential for on-chip optical trapping in various fields.

Electromagnetic Forces and Torques: From Dielectrophoresis to Optical Tweezers

Electromagnetic forces and torques enable many key technologies, including optical tweezers or dielectrophoresis. Interestingly, both techniques rely on the same physical process: the interaction of an oscillating electric field with a particle of matter. This work provides a unified framework to understand this interaction both when considering fields oscillating at low frequencies─dielectrophoresis─and high frequencies─optical tweezers. We draw useful parallels between these two techniques, discuss the different and often unstated assumptions they are based upon, and illustrate key applications in the fields of physical and analytical chemistry, biosensing, and colloidal science.

Optical Trapping-Polarized Raman Microspectroscopy of Single Ethanol Aerosol Microdroplets: Droplet Size Effects on Rotational Relaxation Time and Viscosity

Optical trapping-polarized Raman microspectroscopy of single ethanol (EtOH) microdroplets with a diameter (d) of 6.1-16.5 μm levitated in an EtOH vapor-saturated air/N₂ gas atmosphere has been explored to elucidate the vibrational and rotational motions of EtOH in the droplets at 22.0 °C. The Raman spectral bandwidth of the C-C stretching vibrational mode observed for an aerosol EtOH microdroplet was narrower than that of bulk EtOH, suggesting that the vibrational/rotational motions of EtOH in the aerosol system were restricted compared to those in the bulk system. In practice, polarized Raman microspectroscopy demonstrated that the rotational relaxation time (τ_rot) of EtOH in an aerosol microdroplet with d = 16. 5 μm was slower (2.33 ps) than that in a bulk EtOH (1.65 ps), while the vibrational relaxation times (τ_vib) in the aerosol and bulk EtOH systems were almost comparable with one another: 0.86-0.98 ps. Furthermore, although the τ_vib value of an aerosol EtOH microdroplet was almost unchanged irrespective of d as described above, the τ_rot value increased from 2.33 to 3.57 ps with a decrease in d from 16.5 to 6.1 μm, which corresponded to the increase in EtOH viscosity (η) from 1.33 to 2.04 cP with the decrease in d. The droplet size dependences of τ_rot and η in an aerosol EtOH microdroplet were discussed in terms of the gas/droplet interfacial molecular arrangements of EtOH and Laplace pressure experienced by a spherical EtOH microdroplet in the gas phase.

A Single Large Assembly with Dynamically Fluctuating Swarms of Gold Nanoparticles Formed by Trapping Laser

Laser trapping has been utilized as tweezers to three-dimensionally trap nanoscale objects and has provided significant impacts in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The objects are immobilized at the position where the tightly focused laser beam is irradiated. Here, we report the swarming of gold nanoparticles in which component nanoparticles dynamically interact with each other, keeping their long interparticle distance around the trapping laser focus at a glass/solution interface. A pair of swarms are directionally extended outside the focal spot perpendicular to the linear polarization like a radiation pattern of dipole scattering, while a doughnut-shaped swarm is prepared by circularly polarized trapping laser. The light field is expanded as scattered light through trapped nanoparticles; this modified light field further traps the nanoparticles, and scattering and trapping cooperatively develop. Due to these nonlinear dynamic processes, the dynamically fluctuating swarms are evolved up to tens of micrometers. This finding will open the way to create various swarms of nanoscale objects that interact and bind through the scattered light depending on the properties of the laser beam and the nanomaterials.

Droplet lasers: a review of current progress

It is perhaps surprising that something as fragile as a microscopic droplet could possibly form a laser. In this article we will review some of the underpinning physics as to how this might be possible, and then examine the state of the art in the field. The technology to create and manipulate droplets will be examined, as will the different classes of droplet lasers. We discuss the rapidly developing fields of droplet biolasers, liquid crystal laser droplets and explore how droplet lasers could give rise to new bio and chemical sensing and analysis. The challenges that droplet lasers face in becoming robust devices, either as sensors or as photonic components in the lab on chip devices, is assessed.

Three-dimensional cooling of a single atom by a pair of counter-propagating tightly focused beams

A light beam tightly focused by a high numerical-aperture lens system contains longitudinal components with polarization parallel to the propagation axis. By numerically analyzing the polarization distribution around the focal region in one pair of confocally aligned counter-propagating tightly focused light beams with orthogonal linear polarizations, we found that there exists a three-dimensional polarization gradient pattern similar to that used in cooling neutral atoms. This can be used to three-dimensionally cool atoms trapped in a far-off-resonant trap with only one pair of counter-propagating beams in one dimension. This new cooling scheme can be used to individually cool single atoms in an addressable two-dimensional single-atom array for quantum information processing and be applied to perform readouts of qubit encoded in these atoms without losing them.
