Design and performance of a terahertz absorber based on patterned graphene

Polarization-Independent Perfect Absorption in Monolayer Black Phosphorus Metasurfaces at Terahertz Frequencies via Critical Coupling

Two-dimensional (2D) materials, which possess rich underlying physical properties that can provide the potential for designing more efficient and compact optoelectronic devices, have attracted great interest among scientists. Due to the atomic-scale thickness and the anisotropy of in-plane conductivity, 2D black phosphorus (BP) exhibits a polarization-dependent absorption spectrum with low absorption, which limits its further development in polarization-independent applications such as light absorbers and sensors. In this paper, a polarization-independent perfect absorber in the terahertz band is proposed, which is composed of a patterned BP monolayer deposited on a lossless photonic crystal (PC) slab with a back reflection mirror. The absorption of the patterned BP monolayer can reach 100% at resonant frequencies through the critical coupling mechanism of guided resonance. Moreover, the absorber exhibits polarization-independent absorption characteristics for vertically incident light, which are attributed to the 4-fold rotational symmetry of the PC substrate and the patterned BP monolayer deposited on it. This work opens up the possibility of fabricating optically polarization-independent devices based on single-layer 2D anisotropic materials.

Tunable terahertz absorption of ion gel-graphene hybrids based on the Salisbury effect

The gate-tunable absorption properties of graphene make it suitable for terahertz (THz) absorbers. However, the realization of a graphene-based THz absorber faces challenges between the difficulty of patterning graphene for processing and the intrinsically low absorbance of graphene with the high electric field needed to change the conductivity of graphene. This report presents an electrically tunable graphene THz absorber where a single-layer graphene film and a gold reflective layer are separated by a polyimide (PI) dielectric layer to form an easily fabricated three-layer Salisbury screen structure. The carrier density of the graphene layer can be efficiently tuned by a small external electrical gating (-5V-5 V) with the assistance of an ion gel layer. The voltage modulation of the Fermi energy level (EF) of graphene was confirmed by Raman spectra, and the variation of the device absorbance was confirmed using a THz time-domain spectroscopy system (THz-TDS). The measurements show that the EF is adjusted in the range of 0-0.5 eV, and THz absorbance is adjusted in the range of 60%-99%. The absorber performs well under different curvatures, and the peak absorbance is all over 95%. We conducted further analysis of the absorber absorbance by varying the thickness of the PI dielectric layer, aiming to examine the correlation between the resonant frequency of the absorber and the dielectric layer thickness. Our research findings indicate that the proposed absorber holds significant potential for application in diverse fields such as communication, medicine, and sensing.

Modulation of graphene THz absorption based on HAuCl4 doping method

Graphene is an attractive material for terahertz (THz) absorbers because of its tunable Fermi-Level (E_F). It has become a research hotspot to modulate the E_F of graphene and THz absorption of graphene. Here, a sandwich-structured single layer graphene (SLG)/ Polyimide (PI)/Au THz absorber was proposed, and top-layer graphene was doped by HAuCl₄ solutions. The E_F of graphene was shifted by HAuCl₄ doping, which was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman tests. The results showed that the E_F is shifted about 0.42 eV under 100 mM HAuCl₄ doping, the sheet resistance is reduced from 1065 Ω/sq (undoped) to 375 Ω/sq (100 mM). The corresponding absorbance was increased from 40% to 80% at 0.65 THz and increased from 50% to 90% at 2.0 THz under 100 mM HAuCl₄ doping. Detailed studies showed that the absorption came from a sandwich structure that meets the impedance matching requirements and provided a thin resonant cavity to capture the incident THz waves. In addition, not only the absorber can be prepared simply, but its results in experiments and simulations agree as well. The proposed device can be applied to electromagnetic shielding and imaging, and the proposed method can be applied to prepare other graphene-based devices.

Tunable and anisotropic perfect absorber using graphene-black phosphorus nanoblock

Two-dimensional (2D) materials, which have attracted attention due to intriguing optical properties, form a promising building block in optical and photonic devices. This paper numerically investigates a tunable and anisotropic perfect absorber in a graphene-black phosphorus (BP) nanoblock array structure. The suggested structure exhibits polarization-dependent anisotropic absorption in the mid-infrared, with maximum absorption of 99.73% for x-polarization and 53.47% for y-polarization, as determined by finite-difference time-domain FDTD analysis. Moreover, geometrical parameters and graphene and BP doping amounts are possibly employed to tailor the absorption spectra of the structures. Hence, our results have the potential in the design of polarization-selective and tunable high-performance devices in the mid-infrared, such as polarizers, modulators, and photodetectors.

Dispersion Theory of Surface Plasmon Polaritons on Bilayer Graphene Metasurfaces

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on the graphene metasurfaces (GSPs) are crucial to develop a series of novel functional devices that can merge the well-established plasmonics and novel nanomaterials. Dispersion theory on GSPs is an important aspect, which can provide a basic understanding of propagating waves and further guidance for potential applications based on graphene metamaterials. In this paper, the dispersion theory and its modal characteristics of GSPs on double-layer graphene metasurfaces consisting of the same upper and lower graphene micro-ribbon arrays deposited on the dielectric medium are presented. In order to obtain its dispersion expressions of GSP mode on the structure, an analytical approach is provided by directly solving the Maxwell’s equations in each region and then applying periodical conductivity boundary onto the double interfaces. The obtained dispersion expressions show that GSPs split into two newly symmetric and antisymmetric modes compared to that on the single graphene metasurface. Further, the resultant dispersion relation and its propagating properties as a function of some important physical parameters, such as spacer, ribbon width, and substrate, are treated and investigated in the Terahertz band, signifying great potentials in constructing various novel graphene-based plasmonic devices, such as deeply sub-wavelength waveguides, lenses, sensors, emitters, etc.

A Review: The Functional Materials-Assisted Terahertz Metamaterial Absorbers and Polarization Converters

When metamaterial structures meet functional materials, what will happen? The recent rise of the combination of metamaterial structures and functional materials opens new opportunities for dynamic manipulation of terahertz wave. The optical responses of functional materials are greatly improved based on the highly-localized structures in metamaterials, and the properties of metamaterials can in turn be manipulated in a wide dynamic range based on the external stimulation. In the topical review, we summarize the recent progress of the functional materials-based metamaterial structures for flexible control of the terahertz absorption and polarization conversion. The reviewed devices include but are not limited to terahertz metamaterial absorbers with different characteristics, polarization converters, wave plates, and so on. We review the dynamical tunable metamaterial structures based on the combination with functional materials such as graphene, vanadium dioxide (VO2) and Dirac semimetal (DSM) under various external stimulation. The faced challenges and future prospects of the related researches will also be discussed in the end.

Efficient HIE-FDTD method for designing a dual-band anisotropic terahertz absorption structure

The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is considered to be one of the most accurate and common methods for the simulation of optical devices. However, the conventional FDTD method is subject to the Courant-Friedrich-Levy condition, resulting in extremely low efficiency for calculating two-dimensional materials (2DMs). Recent researches on the hybrid implicit-explicit FDTD (HIE-FDTD) method show that the method can efficiently simulate homogeneous and isotropic 2DMs such as graphene sheet; however, it is inapplicable to the anisotropic medium. In this paper, we propose an in-plane anisotropic HIE-FDTD method to simulate optical devices containing graphene and black phosphorus (BP) sheets. Numerical analysis shows that the proposed method is accurate and efficient. With this method, we present a novel multi-layer graphene-BP-based dual-band anisotropic terahertz absorption structure (GBP-DATAS) and analyze its optical characteristics. Combining the advantages of graphene and BP localized surface plasmons, the GBP-DATAS demonstrates strong anisotropic plasmonic resonance and high absorption rate in the terahertz band.

Recent progress in two-dimensional materials for terahertz protection

With the wide applications of terahertz (THz) devices in future communication technology, THz protection materials are essential to overcome potential threats. Recently, THz metamaterials (MMs) based on two-dimensional (2D) materials (e.g., graphene, MXenes) have been extensively investigated due to their unique THz response properties. In this review, THz protection theories are briefly presented first, including reflection loss and shielding mechanisms. Then, the research progress of graphene and other 2D material-based THz MMs and intrinsic materials are reviewed. MMs absorbers in the forms of single layer, multiple layers, hybrid and tunable metasurfaces show excellent THz absorbing performance. These studies provide a sufficient theoretical and practical basis for THz protection, and superior properties promised the wide application prospects of 2D MMs. Three-dimensional intrinsic THz absorbing materials based on porous and ordered 2D materials also show exceptional THz protection performance and effectively integrate the advantages of intrinsic properties and the structural characteristics of 2D materials. These special structures can optimize the surface impedance matching and enable multiple THz scatterings and electric transmission loss, which can realize high-efficiency absorption loss and active controllable protection performance in ultra-wide THz wavebands. Finally, the advantages and existing problems of current THz protection materials are summarized, and their possible future development and applications are prospected.

Photoinduced Broad-band Tunable Terahertz Absorber Based on a VO2 Thin Film

The demand for terahertz (THz) communication and detection fuels continuous research for high performance of THz absorption materials. In addition to varying the materials and their structure passively, an alternative approach is to modulate a THz wave actively by tuning an external stimulus. Correlated oxides are ideal materials for this because the effects of a small external control parameter can be amplified by inner electronic correlations. Here, by utilizing an unpatterned strongly correlated electron oxide VO₂ thin film, a photoinduced broad-band tunable THz absorber is realized first. The absorption, transmission, reflection, and phase of THz waves can all be actively controlled by an external pump laser above room temperature. By varying the laser fluence, the average broad-band absorption can be tuned from 18.9 to 74.7% and the average transmission can be tuned from 9.2 to 69.2%. Meanwhile, a broad-band antireflection is obtained at 5.6 mJ/cm², and a π-phase shift of a reflected THz wave is achieved when the fluence increases greater than 5.7 mJ/cm². Apart from other modulators, the photoexcitation-assisted dual-phase competition is identified as the origin of this active THz multifunctional modulation. Our work suggests that advantages of controllable phase separation in strongly correlated electron systems could provide viable routes in the creation of active optical components for THz waves.

Tunable and Anisotropic Dual-Band Metamaterial Absorber Using Elliptical Graphene-Black Phosphorus Pairs

We numerically propose a dual-band absorber in the infrared region based on periodic elliptical graphene-black phosphorus (BP) pairs. The proposed absorber exhibits near-unity anisotropic absorption for both resonances due to the combination of graphene and BP. Each of the resonances is independently tunable via adjusting the geometric parameters. Besides, doping levels of graphene and BP can also tune resonant properties effectively. By analyzing the electric field distributions, surface plasmon resonances are observed in the graphene-BP ellipses, contributing to the strong and anisotropic plasmonic response. Moreover, the robustness for incident angles and polarization sensitivity are also illustrated.

A Tunable Dual-Band and Polarization-Insensitive Coherent Perfect Absorber Based on Double-Layers Graphene Hybrid Waveguide

A suspended monolayer graphene has only about 2.3% absorption rate in visible and infrared band, which limits its optoelectronic applications. To significantly increase graphene's absorption efficiency, a tunable dual-band and polarization-insensitive coherent perfect absorber (CPA) is proposed in the mid-infrared regime, which contains the silicon array coupled in double-layers graphene waveguide. Based on the FDTD methods, dual-band perfect absorption peaks are achieved in 9611 nm and 9924 nm, respectively. Moreover, due to its center symmetric feature, the proposed absorber also demonstrates polarization-insensitive. Meanwhile, the coherent absorption peaks can be all-optically modulated by altering the relative phase between two reverse incident lights. Furthermore, by manipulating the Fermi energies of two graphene layers, two coherent absorption peaks can move over a wide spectrum range, and our designed CPA can also be changed from dual-band CPA to narrowband CPA. Thus, our results can find some potential applications in the field of developing nanophotonic devices with excellent performance working at the mid-infrared regime.

Near-infrared absorption-induced switching effect via guided mode resonances in a graphene-based metamaterial

Optical switches based on dielectric nanostructures are highly desired at present. To enhance the wavelength-selective light absorption, and achieve an absorption-induced switching effect, here we propose a graphene-based metamaterial absorber that consists of a dielectric grating, a graphene monolayer, and a photonic crystal. Numerical results reveal that the dual-band absorption with an ultranarrow spectrum of the system is enhanced greatly due to the critical coupling, which is enabled by the combined effects of guided mode resonances and photonic band gap. The quality factor of the absorber can achieve a high value (>500), which is basically consistent with the coupled mode theory. Slow light emerges within the absorption window. In addition, electrostatic gating of graphene in the proposed structure provides dynamic control of the absorption due to the change of the chemical potential of the graphene, resulting in an optional multichannel switching effect. Unlike other one-dimensional devices, these effects can be applied to another polarization without changing the structure parameters, and the quality factor is significantly enhanced (>1000). The tunable light absorption offered by the simple structure with an all-dielectric configuration will provide potential applications for graphene-based optoelectronic devices in the near-infrared range, such as narrowband selective filters, detectors, optical switches, modulators, slow optical devices, etc.

Anisotropic infrared plasmonic broadband absorber based on graphene-black phosphorus multilayers

Two-dimensional materials (2DMs) such as graphene and black phosphorus (BP) have aroused considerable attentions in the past few years. Engineering and enhancing their light-matter interaction is possible due to their support for localized surface plasmon resonances in the infrared regime. In this paper, we have proposed an infrared broadband absorber consisting of multilayer graphene-BP nanoparticles sandwiched between dielectric layers. Benefiting from the properties of graphene and BP, the absorber exhibits both perfect broadband responses and strong anisotropy beyond individual graphene and BP layers. The absorber is tunable with the variation of geometric parameters as well as the doping levels of graphene and BP. The physical insight is revealed by electric field distributions. Furthermore, the angular robustness for incident wave is investigated. The proposed anisotropic omnidirectional broadband absorber may have promising potential applications in various biosensing, communication and imaging systems.

Implementation of Atomically Thick Graphene and Its Derivatives in Electromagnetic Absorbers

To reduce the radar cross section at microwave frequencies, it is necessary to implement electromagnetic (EM) absorbing devices/materials to decrease the strength of reflected waves. In addition, EM absorbers also find their applications at higher spectrum such as THz and optical frequencies. As an atomic-thick two-dimensional (2D) material, graphene has been widely used in the development of EM devices. The conductivity of graphene can be electrostatically or chemically tuned from microwave to optical light frequencies, enabling the design of reconfigurable graphene EM absorbers. Meanwhile, the derivatives of graphene such as reduced graphene oxide (rGO) also demonstrate excellent wave absorbing properties when mixed with other materials. In this article, the research progress of graphene and its derivatives based EM absorbers are introduced and the future development of graphene EM absorbing devices are also discussed.

Polarization-insensitive and wide-angle broadband absorption enhancement of molybdenum disulfide in visible regime

In order to remarkably enhance the absorption capability of monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a broadband MoS2-based perfect absorber, which is inspired by metamaterial, is proposed. By using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, the absorption of proposed MoS2-based absorber above 94% is achieved from 594 to 809 nm. Meanwhile, the average absorptions of monolayer MoS2 enhanced up to 27% and 67% are realized from 598 to 671 nm and 710 to 801 nm, respectively. By manipulating related structural parameters, the absorption spectrum can be further broadened and shifted in a wide wavelength range. Furthermore, the proposed absorber can tolerate a relatively wide range of incident angles and demonstrate polarization-independence.

Tailoring anisotropic perfect absorption in monolayer black phosphorus by critical coupling at terahertz frequencies

A metamaterial perfect absorber composed of a black phosphorus (BP) monolayer, a photonic crystal, and a metallic mirror is designed and investigated to enhance light absorption at terahertz frequencies. Numerical results reveal that the absorption is enhanced greatly with narrow spectra due to critical coupling, which is enabled by guided resonances. Intriguingly, the structure manifests the unusual polarization-dependent feature attributable to the anisotropy of black phosphorus. The quality factor of the absorber can be as high as 95.1 for one polarization while 63.5 for another polarization, which is consistent with the coupled wave theory. The absorption is tunable by varying key parameters, such as period, radius, slab thickness, incident angle, and polarization angle. Furthermore, the state of the system (i.e., critical coupling, over coupling, and under coupling) can be tuned by changing the electron doping of BP, thus achieving various applications. This work offers a paradigm to enhance the light-matter interaction in monolayer BP without plasmonic response, and this easy-to-fabricate structure will provide potential applications in BP-based devices.

Tunable broadband terahertz absorber based on multilayer graphene-sandwiched plasmonic structure

We numerically demonstrate a tunable broadband terahertz absorber with near-unity absorption by using multilayer graphene ribbons sandwiched in a plasmonic integrated structure. By stacking slightly different widths of graphene ribbons in a sandwiched configuration, the absorption bandwidth can be increased because of the different resonant modes closely positioned together. The absorption spectrum's center frequency can be manipulated by varying the graphene's chemical potential, which provides a flexible way to design and optimize absorption property after fabrication. Furthermore, the structure can tolerate a wide range of incident angles, while the improved structure with graphene nanoparticles also shows polarization-independent feature. In this routine, stacking more graphene ribbons or particles with well-designed dimensions can further increase the bandwidth, as long as the metamaterial dimension satisfies the sub-wavelength condition. Therefore, our research provides an important theoretical guide for designing various graphene-based tunable broadband absorbers at terahertz, infrared, and microwave frequencies. This may have promising applications in imaging, sensing, and novel optoelectronic devices.
