Abstract
BACKGROUND The objectives of this study were to investigate the relationship between perinatal risk factors and suicidal ideation and attempts in young adults in Pelotas, Brazil. METHODS The data were collected from the 1993 Pelotas Birth Cohort study. Every pregnant woman who gave birth in one of the hospitals in Pelotas Brazil in 1993 was invited to participate in the study. The current study uses perinatal data collected in 1993, and follow-ups at ages 18 and 22. The primary outcome was lifetime suicide attempts with past month suicide ideation a secondary outcome. The association between perinatal predictors and suicidal ideation or lifetime suicide attempts was investigated using hierarchical logistic regression. FINDINGS There was an analytic sample size of 3493. The perinatal factors association with lifetime suicide attempts were sex (OR = 2.25 CI: 1.76-2.89), paternal education at birth (OR = 0.60, 95%CI: 0.36-0.99), maternal education (9-11 years OR = 2.81, 95%CI: 1.41-5.59, & 0-8 years OR = 2.21, 95%CI: 1.07-4.58), support from friends or neighbors at birth (OR = 0.36 95%CI: 0.17-0.77), and maternal smoking during pregnancy (OR = 1.41, 95%CI: 1.10-1.79). Patterns of associations were broadly similar with suicidal ideation. Interactions between sex and the perinatal factors paternal education, maternal education, smoking and support from friends were assessed and found to be not significant. CONCLUSION Several factors during the perinatal period are associated with risk of lifetime suicide attempts and ideation in young adults in Brazil. Early-life factors associated with suicide-related concerns in early adulthood were similar to those observed in studies from high-income settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES South Africa instituted one of the world's strictest lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic, which generated heightened conditions of psychosocial stress and posed widespread mental health risks. Despite the elevated burdens of suicidal behaviors and risk of psychiatric disease in the country, few studies have examined the impacts of psychosocial stress from the pandemic on suicidal ideation in South Africa. This study examined the association between psychosocial stress experienced under the COVID-19 pandemic and adult suicidal ideation, as well as degree to which sleep quality and duration mediated this relationship. METHODS An online survey assessed experiences of COVID-19 psychosocial stress, sleep quality and duration, and suicidal ideation in a sample of 189 South African adults during the second and third waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. A causal inference framework for mediation analysis was used to assess the degree to which sleep quality and duration explained the association between COVID-19 psychosocial stress and suicidal ideation. RESULTS Suicidal ideation was reported in 21% of adults. Adults described having moderate sleep quality and an average of 6.9 hours of sleep per night. COVID-19 psychosocial stress significantly predicted adult suicidal ideation in fully adjusted models. Sleep quality, but not sleep duration, significantly mediated the association between COVID-19 psychosocial stress and suicidal ideation, accounting for 25.9% of the total effect. CONCLUSIONS Poor sleep quality may play an important role in exacerbating the alarming stress-induced mental health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Further research is necessary to understand the underlying sleep dynamics and associated psychological and neurobiological processes that perpetuate adult suicidal ideation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most neurodevelopmental tests used to assess child development in sub-Saharan Africa were developed in western or high-income countries, raising the question of their usefulness with African children. OBJECTIVE This systematic review identified and synthesized key findings from studies measuring development in children in Sub-Saharan Africa in early childhood and again at school age, to assess neurocognitive associations longitudinally from infancy through middle childhood. METHODS The study was based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses method, selecting articles referenced in the PubMed, PsycInfo, and Embase databases using the following inclusion criteria: published between 2000 and 2022, written in French or English, and presenting results dealing with the objective assessment of child's neurodevelopment. All articles were registered in the Zotero reference manager and analyzed by title, abstract, and full text. RESULTS Several of the seven selected studies confirmed that attention and working memory in infancy can predict children's neurocognitive performance, including mathematical ability, at school age. In two of the studies, children with poor mental development at 1 year of age are more likely to present with poorer behavioral development at school age, including learning difficulties in school and risk for grade repetition. CONCLUSION Cognitive ability assessed in early childhood is strongly associated with performance at school age in cohorts of African children followed longitudinally. Even with assessments adapted cross-culturally, infants and preschoolers at risk for poor developmental outcomes can be identified to better receive strategic early interventions to enhance their development.

Abstract
Mental health challenges are a severe issue that could lead to suicide if not properly addressed. South Africa has a significant burden of mental health issues, which contributes to the soaring rate of suicide. Adequate mental health-care provision could reduce the high suicide rate in South Africa. Since the apartheid regime, the country has made a series of efforts to improve mental health. This study aimed to review and examine available literature on mental health and suicide issues in South Africa and demonstrate the policy implications. This study adopted a narrative review approach. Electronic databases (PubMed, Scilit, Google Scholar and Semantic Scholar) were used to identify published articles in the English language with crucial search terms that included mental health, South African mental health policy, South Africa, suicide and policy. Literature suggests that at the provincial level, there are no adequate mental health policies, and the implementation of the country's mental health policy is faced with many challenges, such as a shortage of professionals and finances. The review also showed that task sharing and counselling have been pilot-tested and shown to be effective methods for the prevention of mental illness and promotion of positive mental health. This study concludes that the mental health treatment gap still exists in South Africa, and this needs to be tackled using effective, multi-level counselling interventions and policy initiatives. Adequate mental health-care provision and effective implementation of mental health policy could reduce the high rate of suicide in South Africa.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa introduced new societal adversities and mental health threats in a country where one in three individuals are expected to develop a psychiatric condition sometime in their life. Scientists have suggested that psychosocial stress and trauma during childhood may increase one's vulnerability to the mental health consequences of future stressors-a process known as stress sensitization. This prospective analysis assessed whether childhood adversity experienced among South African children across the first 18 years of life, coinciding with the post-apartheid transition, exacerbates the mental health impacts of psychosocial stress experienced during the 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic (ca. 2020-2021). MATERIALS AND METHODS Data came from 88 adults who participated in a follow-up study of a longitudinal birth cohort study in Soweto, South Africa. Childhood adversity and COVID-19 psychosocial stress were assessed as primary predictors of adult PTSD risk, and an interaction term between childhood adversity and COVID-19 stress was calculated to evaluate the potential effect of stress sensitization. RESULTS Fifty-six percent of adults exhibited moderate-to-severe PTSD symptoms. Greater childhood adversity and higher COVID-19 psychosocial stress independently predicted worse post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in adults. Adults who reported greater childhood adversity exhibited non-significantly worse PTSD symptoms from COVID-19 psychosocial stress. DISCUSSION These results highlight the deleterious mental health effects of both childhood trauma and COVID-19 psychosocial stress in our sample and emphasize the need for greater and more accessible mental health support as the pandemic progresses in South Africa.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While adolescent suicidal behaviour (ideation, planning, and attempt) remains a global public health concern, available county-specific evidence on the phenomenon from African countries is relatively less than enough. The present study was conducted to estimate the 12-month prevalence and describe some of the associated factors of suicide behaviour among school-going adolescents aged 12-17 years old in Namibia. METHODS Participants (n = 4531) answered a self-administered anonymous questionnaire developed and validated for the nationally representative Namibia World Health Organization Global School-based Student Health Survey conducted in 2013. We applied univariate, bivariable, and multivariable statistical approaches to the data. RESULTS Of the 3,152 analytical sample, 20.2% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 18.3-22.2%) reported suicidal ideation, 25.2% (95% CI: 22.3-28.4%) engaged in suicide planning, and 24.5% (95% CI: 20.9-28.6%) attempted suicide during the previous 12 months. Of those who attempted suicide, 14.6% (95% CI: 12.5-16.9%) reported one-time suicide attempt, and 9.9% (95% CI: 8.1-12.1%) attempted suicide at least twice in the previous 12 months. The final adjusted multivariable models showed physical attack victimisation, bullying victimisation, loneliness, and parental intrusion of privacy as key factors associated with increased likelihood of suicidal ideation, planning, one-time suicide attempt, and repeated attempted suicide. Cannabis use showed the strongest association with increased relative risk of repeated attempted suicide. CONCLUSION The evidence highlights the importance of paying more attention to addressing the mental health needs (including those related to psychological and social wellness) of school-going adolescents in Namibia. While the current study suggests that further research is warranted to explicate the pathways to adolescent suicide in Namibia, identifying and understanding the correlates (at the individual-level, family-level, interpersonal-level, school context and the broader community context) of adolescent suicidal ideations and non-fatal suicidal behaviours are useful for intervention and prevention programmes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous research has found increasing evidence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) leading to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal behaviors. Most studies have focused on a certain type or timing of ACEs or the patterns of multiple types; however, few of them have examined the patterns of ACEs combined types and timing and the gender differences in the association between ACEs and self-harming behaviors. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted in three Chinese cities from November 2020 to May 2021. We asked 16,853 middle school students to anonymously complete a questionnaire to provide the details of their own ACEs and NSSI or suicidal behaviors. RESULTS Latent class analysis identified four classes: high ACEs (10 %), high abuse/neglect (20.3 %), moderate ACEs (26.7 %) and low ACEs (43 %). Logistic regression models demonstrated that students in the high ACEs, high abuse/neglect and moderate ACEs subgroups were more likely to engage in NSSI and suicidal behaviors than students with low ACEs. Compared with boys, girls had a higher probability of engaging in NSSI and suicidal behaviors when exposed to the same level of ACEs. CONCLUSION Co-occurrence of ACEs is associated with high risk of NSSI and suicidal behaviors. Our findings recognized the most dangerous patterns and latent class membership, which supply the evidence for policy makers to adopt preventive measures to protect high-risk individuals. Strategies to relieve the impact of ACEs, especially on girls, need to be considered comprehensively. LIMITATIONS The study was limited by cross-sectional design, as causality could not be confirmed. In addition, because our survey was retrospective, potential recall bias can not be ignored.
