Abstract
The impact of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) (initiated in 2000 in Ghana and ran for 12 years) in mitigating soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections in LF-endemic areas is unknown. During a 1-year hiatus which ensued between 2011 and 2012, a longitudinal study was conducted to determine GPELF effect on hookworm infections in selected communities involved in the programme since its inception, while measuring the effectiveness of biannual ALB treatments on schoolchildren living in such communities. A total of 399 school children aged 3 to 18 years were randomly selected from four communities in the Kpandai district of northern Ghana. Each presented a single stool sample at baseline, 21 days post-treatment, at the 3rd and 6th months, 21 days post-second intervention (i.e. following sample collection and treatment with ALB in the 6th month), and in the ninth month of the study period. Haemoglobin (hb) levels were also measured at all time points using finger prick blood samples and a URIT digital test kit. Each participant submitting a sample, was treated with a single-dose ALB (400mg) at baseline and in the sixth month. Stool samples were processed by preparing duplicate Kato-Katz slides per sample, and examined by microscopy. The Body Mass Index-for-age z-scores (BAZ) of participants were assessed following the determination of BMIs at each time point by measuring their height and weight with a stadiometer and weighing scale. Overall hookworm prevalences were 25.68% (95% CI = 20.51-31.75) at baseline, 11.18% (95% CI = 7.87-15.41) 21 days post-treatment, 11.78% (95% CI = 8.38-16.11) and 6.95% (95% CI = 4.41-10.43) in the 3rd and 6th months, 0.91% (95% CI = 0.19-2.65) 21 days post-second intervention, and 8.46% (95% CI = 5.62-12.23) in the ninth month. Observed overall faecal egg count reduction rates (ERRs) were 94.21% (95% CI = 81.50%- 100.00%) 21 days after baseline treatment, 97.70% (95% CI = 85.08-100.00) and 96.95% (95% CI = 84.18%- 100.00%) in the 3rd and 6th months, 99.98% (95% CI = 86.42%- 100.00%) 21 days post-second intervention, and 17.18% (95% CI = 14.07%- 20.67%) in the 9th month. Respective cure rates (CRs) were 62.35% (95% CI = 46.71-81.56%), 85.88% (95% CI = 67.32-100.00%), 87.06% (95% CI = 68.36%- 100.00%), 98.82% (95% CI = 78.83%- 100.00%), and 36.36% (95% CI = 9.91%- 93.11%). Additionally, increases in the percent frequency of 'normal hb' (p < 0.01) were observed across the study time points, whilst 'normal BAZ' cases remained high (from 94.87% to 98.87%) throughout the study period. These findings primarily indicate satisfactory effectiveness of ALB which may be maintainable in mass drug administration programmes by the modification of treatment strategies from annual to bi-annual regimes. This could minimize the likelihood of emerging poorly-responding hookworm phenotypes in Ghana. Additionally, a positive impact of bi-annual treatment on participant anaemia status is herein indicated with particular regard to the school children in our cohort.

Abstract
The One-Health approach recognizes the intricate connection between human, animal, and environmental health, and that cooperative effort from various professionals provides comprehensive awareness and potential solutions for issues relating to the health of people, animals, and the environment. This approach has increasingly gained appeal as the standard strategy for tackling emerging infectious diseases, most of which are zoonoses. Treatment with anthelmintics (AHs) without a doubt minimizes the severe consequences of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs); however, evidence of anthelmintic resistance (AR) development to different helminths of practically every animal species and the distinct groups of AHs is overwhelming globally. In this regard, the correlation between the application of anthelmintic drugs in both human and animal populations and the consequent development of anthelmintic resistance in STHs within the context of a One-Health framework is explored. This review provides an overview of the major human and animal STHs, treatment of the STHs, AR development and drug-related factors contributing towards AR, One-Health and STHs, and an outline of some One-Health strategies that may be used in combating AR.

Abstract
Researchers have raised the possibility that soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections might modify the host's immune response against other systemic infections. STH infections can alter the immune response towards type 2 immunity that could then affect the likelihood and severity of other illnesses. However, the importance of co-infections is not completely understood, and the impact and direction of their effects vary considerably by infection. This review synthesizes evidence regarding the relevance of STH co-infections, the potential mechanisms that explain their effects, and how they might affect control and elimination efforts. According to the literature reviewed, there are both positive and negative effects associated with STH infections on other diseases such as malaria, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), tuberculosis, gestational anemia, pediatric anemia, neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) like lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, and trachoma, as well as Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and human papillomavirus (HPV). Studies typically describe how STHs can affect the immune system and promote increased susceptibility, survival, and persistence of the infection in the host by causing a TH2-dominated immune response. The co-infection of STH with other diseases has important implications for the development of treatment and control strategies. Eliminating parasites from a human host can be more challenging because the TH2-dominated immune response induced by STH infection can suppress the TH1 immune response required to control other infections, resulting in an increased pathogen load and more severe disease. Preventive chemotherapy and treatment are currently the most common approaches used for the control of STH infections, but these approaches alone may not be adequate to achieve elimination goals. Based on the conclusions drawn from this review, integrated approaches that combine drug administration with water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions, hygiene education, community engagement, and vaccines are most likely to succeed in interrupting the transmission of STH co-infections. Gaining a better understanding of the behavior and relevance of STH co-infections in the context of elimination efforts is an important intermediate step toward reducing the associated burden of disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Helminthiases are highly endemic in Southeast Asia, including the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). This study aimed to assess the current intestinal helminth infections and the associated risk factors among adults across the Lao PDR. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 165 villages across 17 provinces and the Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR. A multi-stage sampling method was employed to select the adult study participants (≥ 18 years). Data collection included (1) interview of the study participants, (2) physical measurements, and (3) a five gram of stool sample from each study participant was collected and preserved in 10% formalin solution for intestinal helminth detection using formalin-ether concentration technique (FECT). Descriptive analysis was used to describe the socio-demographic characteristics of study participants and the prevalence of intestinal helminth infections. Logistic regressions were applied to test the association between intestinal helminth infection and individual risk factors. A P-value below 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS A total of 2800 study participants were enrolled. Their average age was 46.0 years; 57.8% were female. Overall, 30.9%, 8.6% and 1.5% of study participants were infected with one, two, or three different intestinal helminth species, respectively. Among the study participants 21.6% were infected with hookworm, 18.8% with Opisthorchis viverrini-like (Ov-like) infection, 4.8% with Strongyloides stercoralis, 2.3% with Ascaris lumbricoides, 1.5% with Trichuris trichiura, and 3.3% with Taenia spp. Ov-like infection was of high prevalence in the southern (28.8%) and central (21.3%) provinces, while hookworm (26.3%), A. lumbricoides (7.3%), T. trichiura (3.1%), and Taenia spp. (4.2%) were prevalent in the northern provinces. Risk analysis showed that men were more likely to be infected with hookworm [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.2, P = 0.019]. The Lao-Tai ethnic group had a 5.2-times (P < 0.001) higher chance of having Ov-like infection than the minorities. Possession of toilet facility at home was associated with reduced odds for Ov-like (aOR = 0.4, P < 0.001) and hookworm (aOR = 0.6, P < 0.001) infections. CONCLUSIONS Our study provides a nationwide update of the intestinal helminth prevalence among adults in Lao PDR. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first Lao nationwide survey on intestinal helminth infections and risk factors in adults. It provides crucial information for national control programs for intestinal helminth infections in Lao PDR.

Abstract
Soil-transmitted helminth infection remained a significant public health problem in many developing countries. Elementary school-age children dominated the cases in Indonesia due to poor personal hygiene. South Central Timor had the top three poverty and the highest stunting rates in East Nusa Tenggara. Research to examine the relationship between personal hygiene and the incidence of Soil-Transmitted Helminth infection had never been conducted in South Central Timor. The study population consisted of 279 elementary school students selected from Inpres Nulle Elementary School, Inpres Neonmat Elementary School, and GMIT Nulle Elementary School through the Multistage Random Sampling technique. It was obtained 160 children as the study samples. The study found that 46 children (29.0%) were positive for STH, and 114 (71.0%) were negative for STH. Furthermore, 30 (65.2%) were positive for hookworm, 14 (30.4%) were positive for Ascaris lumbricoides, and 2 (4.4%) children had mixed infections. Multiple Logistic Regression Tests showed a significant effect of washing hands with soap after defecating with p = 0.031 and OR = 7.158. Thus, if a child did not wash his hands with soap after defecating, he had a risk of STH infection by 7.158 times. Furthermore, the effect of eating habits obtained a p = 0.038 and an OR value = 0.133 with the possibility of eating habits that did not protect against STH infection. In addition, the effect of dirty nails obtained a p=0.064 and an OR=5.264, which indicated the risk of contracting STH by 5.264 times. The effect of snacking habit obtained a p = 0.005 and an OR=0.121. It can be concluded that the incidence of STH was simultaneously influenced by the habit of defecating on the ground, washing hands without soap after defecation, eating raw food, having dirty nails, and having poor snacking habits.

Abstract
Beyond participating in the oxygen transport by red blood cells, iron is an essential micronutrient and contributes to different physiological pathways and processes, such as cell proliferation, DNA repair, and other homeostatic functions. Iron deficiency affects millions of people, especially children and pregnant women. The consequences of iron deficiency are diverse, including inadequate child development, impaired cognition, and reduced productivity. Several factors contribute to iron deficiency, such as iron-poor diet, genetic factors, and infection with soil-transmitted helminths (STHs), especially roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides), hookworms (Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale), and whipworms (Trichuris trichiura). This review updates and summarizes the role of STHs as drivers of iron deficiency. Also, the poorly explored connections between STH infection, geophagia (a pica manifestation), immune response, and iron deficiency are discussed, highlighting how iron deficiency may act as a risk factor for infections by STHs, in addition to being a consequence of intestinal parasitic infections. Finally, strategies for control and management of iron deficiency and STH infection are described.

Abstract
Background: Child anaemia continues to represent a major public health challenge in lower-and-middle income countries. It has serious long-term consequences for child growth and development. In Indonesia, there was a 10% increase in the national prevalence of child anaemia between 2013 and 2018. Aim: This study aims to assess the prevalence of, and factors associated with anaemia among children aged one to three years in eight districts in Aceh Province, Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 1148 mother-child dyads aged one to three years between November and December 2018. The sampling process involved a three-stage cluster sampling design using the probability proportionate to size methodology. Anaemia status was determined using haemoglobin level (Hb < 11.0 g/dL). Data were analysed using multivariable logistic regression to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for associated factors. Results: The overall prevalence of anaemia was 76.1% (869/1142). 44.7% (510/1142) and 28.6% (327/1142) had moderate and mild anaemia, respectively. Child aged 12-24 months (aOR: 2.00, 95% CI: 1.26-3.17), not receiving routine immunisation (aOR: 2.62, 95% CI: 1.34-5.10), and maternal anaemia (aOR: 2.15, 95% CI: 1.59-2.90) were significantly associated with anaemia. Conclusion: The prevalence of anaemia among the children in this study was high, and was associated with child age, immunisation status, and maternal anaemia. These findings provide further insight into anaemia as a public health issue at a sub-national level in Indonesia and for development of targeted programmes to address associated risk factors of child anaemia.

Abstract
This study examined the prevalence and intensity of intestinal helminth infections and their association with anemia, undernutrition, and academic performance among school children in Maksegnit, northwestern Ethiopia. A total of 1205 school children, who attended Maksegnit Number Two Elementary School between May and July 2021, participated in this study. To determine helminth infection status, two thick Kato–Katz slides were examined for each child. Hemoglobin level was measured using a HemoCue machine. Academic performance was assessed using the mean score of all subjects children have taken for the Spring 2020/2021 academic term. Out of 1205 children examined, 45.4% were infected with at least one helminth species, 7.9% were anemic, and 35.8% were undernourished. The means for hemoglobin level and z-scores of weight for age, height for age, body mass index for age, and academic scores were lower among helminth-infected children than the uninfected. Children infected with intestinal helminths showed higher odds of anemia than those uninfected with helminths. In conclusion, there was a moderate prevalence of intestinal helminth infection and undernutrition among school children in Maksegnit. Intestinal helminth infection could increase the risk of anemia, undernutrition, and poor academic performance.

Abstract
Introduction. Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis (STH) is a Neglected Tropical Disease with almost 25% world population infected. Children were vulnerable to infection with morbidities affecting growth. STH infection alters children nutritional status which potentially causing anemia. Meta-analysis relating STH infections to hemoglobin (Hb) level and risk of anemia in children is limited.
Aim. To compare hemoglobin levels and risk of anemia in children infected and uninfected with STH.
Methods. Meta-analysis conducted from journals obtained from Pubmed, ScienceDirect, WileyLibrary, Cochrane, EBSCO, Proquest, DOAJ, and GoogleScholar from 2011-2021. Full text cross sectional studies on children with relevant topic is included, while unclear, inaccessible, or post interventional studies were excluded. Articles were analyzed in Review Manager 5.4 in mean difference (MD) and odds ratio (OR) with Confidence Interval (CI) of 95%.
Result. Out of 25,683 articles in literature search, 29 were eligible for systematic review and meta-analysis. STH infection significantly decreases hemoglobin level (MD -0.2g/dL; p=0.02) and increases risk of anemia (OR 1.83; p<0.00001). Species analysis presented parallel result on Trichuris trichiura (MD -0.31g/dL; p=0.001 and OR 1.66; p=0.009), Hookworm (MD -0.56g/dL; p=0.02 and OR 3.3; p<0.00001), and multiple infection (MD -0.25g/dL; p=0.03 and OR 4.49; p=0.005). Ascaris lumbricoides didn’t show significance on hemoglobin level but comparable for risk of anemia (MD -0.16g/dL; p=0.17 and OR 1.57; p=0.001).
Discussion. All STH infections exhibits lower hemoglobin level and higher risk of anemia caused by lower nutrition absorption and occult bleeding in gastrointestinal tract. Hookworm and multiple infections has the highest risk of anemia. Proportion of anemia may vary in studies and influenced by sociodemographic characteristics, but higher proportions occur in STH infected.
Conclusion. Children infected with STH has lower hemoglobin level and in risk of anemia compared to uninfected children, hence further study is still needed to be conducted.
