Abstract
Adding small molecular plasticizers is the most common route to tailor the stretchability of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). However, how the plasticization along with the nature of the plasticizer governs the structural homogeneity during stretching remains an open question to answer. Herein, two representative plasticizers, glycerol (GLY) and water, are chosen to endow the PVA films with ductility. It is found that large strain cavitations cause obvious stress whitening in the PVA/H2 O films; on the contrary, most of the PVA/GLY films maintain transparent undergoing tensile deformation. Through a combination of experimental inspections and molecular dynamic simulation, it is revealed that partial water molecules that behave as free water will aggregate into microdomains, which serve as mechanical defects responsible for yielding voids. Whereas, the GLY plasticizer homogeneously disperses at a molecular level and interacts with PVA chains through strong hydrogen bonds. More interestingly, it is illustrated that the dispersion and bound states of plasticizers are closely related to the mechanical character of the plasticized PVA films. These findings offer new insight into the working mechanism of plasticization on the structural stability during stretching, and guide the design of PVA/plasticizer system to obtain excellent comprehensive mechanics.

Abstract
The present work seeks to determine the impact of weight percentage (wt%) of grafted starch nanocrystals (g-SNCs) on the oxygen and water vapour permeability of poly (lactic acid), PLA. Changes in the oxygen and water vapour permeability of PLA due to changes in PLA’s crystalline structures and lamellar thickness were quantified. To this end, 3, 5, and 7 wt% of g-SNC nanoparticles were blended with PLA using the solvent casting method in order to study impact of g-SNC nanoparticles on crystallization behaviour, long spacing period, melting behavior, and oxygen and water barrier properties of PLA nanocomposites. This was achieved by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), small-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and oxygen and water vapour permeability machine. The results of the WAXD and SAXD analysis show that the addition of 5 wt% g-SNC in PLA induces α crystal structure at a lower crystallization time, while it significantly increases the α crystal thickness of PLA, in comparison to neat PLA. However, when g-SNC concentrations were altered (i.e., 3 or 7 wt%), the crystallization time was found to increase due to the thermodynamic barrier of crystallization. Finally, the oxygen and water vapour permeability of PLA/SNC-g-LA (5 wt%) nanocomposite film were found to be reduced by ∼70% and ~50%, respectively, when compared to the neat PLA film. This can lead to the development of PLA nanocomposites with high potential for applications in food packaging.

Abstract
Quantum efficiencies remain a critical issue for general applications of semiconducting polymers in optoelectronics and others. In this work, we demonstrate that nearly 100% quantum efficiencies (η's) in thin solid films can be reached when the polymer molecules are mechanically stretched into molecular confinement. We selected three conjugated polymers of varied backbone stiffness and interchain coupling, prepared in both diluted and pristine states. All of the polymers when highly diluted (c = 0.1 wt %) exhibited massive η increases after stretching to very large strains (∼300-500%) via micronecking, with the rigid polyfluorene (PFO) and semirigid MEH-PPV both manifesting η ≈ 90%, while the most flexible yet regioregular polythiophene (P3HT-rr) exhibited a 10-fold increase to ∼21%. In the pristine state, molecular aggregation and interchain coupling curtail development of the molecular confinement, but the large-strain deformation still enhances η's significantly, to ∼90% (PFO) and ∼55% (MEH-PPV) despite no increases for the crystalline P3HT-rr. Moreover, upon substitution by a bulkier side-group to reduce interchain coupling, the pristine films of polythiophene (P3EHT) exhibited a ∼3-fold increase of η after the stretching. The nearly 100% of η's in fully stretched molecules indicates that the in situ self-trapping occurring via sub-picosecond backbone interactions can be mostly responsible for energy dissipations and quite suppressible by segmental stress control. The mechanical confinement effects also indicate the fundamental role of molecular mechanics during stabilization and migration of photoexcited charges.

Abstract
To provide knowledge to improve the mechanical performance of Polyamide 12 (PA12) sintered products, we have studied experimentally the mechanical response and structure development under constant strain rate of compression moulded and laser sintered PA12 by means of in situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) experiments. It is found that at low temperatures, i.e., below the glass transition temperature, the brittle failure of laser sintered samples is determined by the fast formation of voids that originate at the beginning of the macroscopic plastic deformation. This effect appears to be faster at temperatures below room temperature and it is less effective at higher temperatures. When tested at 120 ∘ C, sintered PA12 shows a better mechanical response in terms of yield stress and a comparable strain at break with respect to moulded PA12. This can be explained by considering that sintered samples have slightly thicker crystals that can sustain higher stress at high temperature. However, this also leads to the formation of a larger number of voids at low testing temperatures. This work does not attempt to quantify the micromechanics behind crystals deformation and disruption, but it provides a deeper insight in the difference between the mechanical response of moulded and sintered PA12.

Deformation Mechanisms of Isotactic Poly-1-Butene and Its Copolymers Deformed by Plane-Strain Compression and Tension. CRYSTALS 2019. Abstract
The deformation-induced crystalline texture of isotactic poly-1-butene and its random copolymers with ethylene, developing during plane-strain compression and uniaxial tension, was investigated with X-Ray pole figures, supported by small-angle scattering (SAXS) and thermal analysis (DSC). The crystallographic (100)[001] chain slip was identified as the primary deformation mechanism, active in both compression and tension, supported by the transverse slip system and interlamellar shear. At the true strain around 0.8, lamellae fragmentation and partial destruction of the crystalline phase due to slip localization was observed, much heavier in tension than in plane-strain compression. That fragmentation brought an acceleration of the slip, which ultimately led to a common fiber texture in tensile samples, with the chain direction oriented preferentially along the drawing (flow) direction. Slightly more complicated crystal texture, reflecting triaxiality of the stress field, still with the chain direction preferentially oriented near the flow direction, was observed in compression. Additional deformation mechanism was observed at low strain in the plane-strain compression, which was either interlamellar shear operating in amorphous layers and supported by crystallographic slips or the simultaneous (110)[110] transverse slip operating on a pair of (110) planes. It was concluded that deformation proceeded similarly in both studied deformation modes, with practically the same deformation mechanisms engaged. Then, the plane-strain compression, proceeding homogeneously and preventing cavitation, seems more suitable for studies of the real deformation behavior, not obscured by any unwanted side-effects.

Abstract
Orientation direction dependency of whitening activated at large strains was studied using four pre-oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) samples with different molecular weights stretched along different directions with respect to the pre-orientation (0°, 45°, and 90°) by means of in situ wide-, small-, and ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering techniques. A macroscopic fracture of iPP materials was also observed following the stress whitening at large strains. These two associated processes in pre-oriented iPP samples at elevated temperatures were found to be governed by not only the molecular weight of iPP but also the pre-orientation direction. For a certain pre-orientation direction of iPP, both the critical stress of cavitation induced-whitening and failure stress increased with increasing molecular weight. For one given molecular weight, the pre-oriented iPP showed the smallest critical stress for whitening and failure stress along the pre-orientation direction (0°) while the samples displayed larger values for the same behaviors when stretched at 45° or 90° with respect to the pre-orientation direction. Such behavior suggested that oriented amorphous networks, with different mechanical strengths, can be generated during the second deformation processes in these pre-oriented iPP samples. The evolution of inter-fibrillar tie chains in highly oriented amorphous networks was considered as the main factor controlling the response of the inner network to the external stress since the cavitation-induced whitening activated at large strains was caused by the failure of load bearing inter-fibrillar tie chains in the oriented amorphous network.

Abstract
The poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) sample was used to investigate the cavitation-induced stress-whitening phenomenon during stretching at different temperatures via the ultrasmall-angle X-ray scattering technique. Two modes of cavitation were found that mode I cavitation activated around yield point followed by mode II cavitation generated in highly oriented state. The critical strain for initiating the mode II cavitation increases with the increase of the stretching temperature, whereas the critical stress grew steadily in the lower temperature regime (30-60 °C) and reached a plateau at 70 °C. The appearance of mode II cavitation at large strains was independent of the mode I cavitation. The mode I cavitation was attributed to the competitive process between the formation of cavities and shearing yield of lamellae, whereas the mode II cavitation was proven to be related to the failure of the whole highly oriented entangled amorphous network because of the breaking of interfibrillar load-bearing tie molecules. Size distribution of cavities has been successfully calculated using a model fitting procedure. The results showed that the quantity of cavities increased heavily while the size was kept nearly constant during the propagation of the mode II cavitation.

Abstract
This detailed study reveals the relation between structural evolution and the mechanical response of α -, β - and γ -iPP. Uni-axial compression experiments, combined with in situ WAXD measurements, allowed for the identification of the evolution phenomena in terms of phase composition. Tensile experiments in combination with SAXS revealed orientation and voiding phenomena, as well as structural evolution in the thickness of the lamellae and amorphous layers. On the level of the crystallographic unit cell, the WAXD experiments provided insight into the early stages of deformation. Moreover, transitions in the crystal phases taking place in the larger deformation range and the orientation of crystal planes were monitored. At all stretching temperatures, the crystallinity decreases upon deformation, and depending on the temperature, different new structures are formed. Stretching at low temperatures leads to crystal destruction and the formation of the oriented mesophase, independent of the initial polymorph. At high temperatures, above T α c , all polymorphs transform into oriented α -iPP. Small quantities of the initial structures remain present in the material. The compression experiments, where localization phenomena are excluded, show that these transformations take place at similar strains for all polymorphs. For the post yield response, the strain hardening modulus is decisive for the mechanical behavior, as well as for the orientation of lamellae and the evolution of void fraction and dimensions. β -iPP shows by far the most intense voiding in the entire experimental temperature range. The macroscopic localization behavior and strain at which the transition from disk-like void shapes, oriented with the normal in tensile direction, into fibrillar structures takes place is directly correlated with the strain hardening modulus.

Abstract
A grazing-incidence sample stage was designed for realizing grazing-incidence scattering measurements, especially in the ultra-small-angle regime, in a modified Xenocs Xeuss system in the laboratory. The designed sample stage, which is composed of four separate motorized positioning stages, allows the sample to be moved along four different directions to locate it in the proper position for scattering measurement. In an effort to realize grazing-incidence ultra-small-angle scattering (GIUSAXS) measurements, both the separation of the collimation slit systems and the sample-to-detector distance have been lengthened. At a separation of the collimation slit systems of 2400 mm and a sample-to-detector distance of 6558 mm, the effective smallest scattering vector magnitudeqminreaches 0.01 nm−1. A colloidal crystalline thin film obtained from drying a polystyrene latex dispersion on silicon substrate was measured in the setup in GIUSAXS mode at different beam sizes. The resultant GIUSAXS patterns at smaller beam sizes reveal fine crystalline structures in the film.
