Structural Path Analysis of Fossil Fuel Based CO2 Emissions: A Case Study for China

Decomposition of China's regional carbon emission paths: an analysis of environmental input and output considering regional development differences

At present, the imbalance in regional development and carbon emissions are the two major challenges that China faces in terms of achieving high-quality development. This paper takes regional development differences as the starting point. First, we adopt the improved CRITIC method to measure the comprehensive development level of 30 regions in China and use K-means clustering to divide the 30 regions into five development levels. Second, the structural path analysis for environmental input-output analysis (EIOA-SPA) model is used to quantify the transfer of carbon emissions between sectors in various regions. Finally, a comprehensive analysis is performed based on the development characteristics of each region and the decomposition results of the carbon emission paths. Then, more precise carbon emission reduction strategies are proposed for the development of different regions in China. The results show that first, the development gap between regions in China has improved, and the development of the central and western regions has achieved remarkable results. However, differences between the north and the south and the gap between coastal and inland regions still exist. Second, the direct carbon emissions of regions with different levels of development are mainly derived from high energy-consuming sectors, especially the production and supply of electricity and heat sector. Third, there are certain differences in the indirect carbon emission pathways of regions with different development levels. The transportation, storage, and postal sector in high developed regions have obvious driving effects on carbon emissions. The building sector plays a prominent role in driving carbon emissions in high developed regions and medium-high developed regions. The building sector, nonmetallic mineral products sector, metal smelting sector, and rolled processed product sector in medium developed regions and medium-low developed regions have relatively high carbon emission-stimulating effects. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt differentiated emission reduction strategies for regions with different development levels in China to achieve adequate carbon emission reductions. This effort would further promote the construction of China's ecological civilization.

Unveiling Carbon Emission Attributions along Sale Chains

Substantial anthropogenic emissions have resulted in serious environmental problems in China. Direct emissions and demand-pulled emissions along the supply chains have been extensively investigated. However, understanding the mechanism of how the sectoral emission is transferred through production activities along the sale chains at different production layers remains a challenge. In this paper, a top-down multilayer emission attribution model is developed to unveil the metabolism of multilayer input-driven emissions. For the first time, a diagramming approach enables the exhaustive depiction of the connections between primary input attributions and final production attributions, which allows accurate reallocation of the emission responsibilities to sectors at different production layers. Individual sale chain paths and supply chain paths have been extracted and ranked according to the contributions of emissions. A four-perspective comparison of sectoral emissions (i.e., direct emissions along sale chains, enabled emissions, direct emissions along the supply chains, and embodied emissions) is assessed. We find that at multiple production layers, sectoral direct emissions along the sale chains differ greatly from direct emissions along the supply chains. By comprehensively considering providers, consumers, and producers within a metabolic system, policy-makers should encourage upstream sectors to improve their cleaner production technologies and downstream sectors to adjust their industrial structures.

How the manufacturing economy impacts China's energy-related GHG emissions: Insights from structural path analysis

As "the world's factory", China's energy consumption and GHG emissions can be largely attributed to its manufacturing economy. This paper aims to examine energy-related methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by Chinese economy from a consumption-based perspective, and to explore the energy-climate-manufacturing nexus relationship in its supply chains. Nearly three-quarters of China's energy-related GHG emissions in 2012 were associated with the manufacturing industry directly or indirectly. Among which, over two-fifths of the national CH₄ and CO₂ emissions were embodied in the final demand of manufacturing products, mainly driven by the exports and capital formation. Meanwhile, manufacturing sectors served as important intemediate transmission nodes of embodied emissions for other industries such as construction and services. More than 80% and 40% of the embodied emissions in the sectors of construction and services were related to the intermediate uses of manufacturing products, respectively. Critical supply chain paths for linking embodied GHG emissions with manufacturing sectors were extracted through the structural path analysis technique. The top 30 common paths were responsible for about one fifth of the total CH₄ and CO₂ emissions. Three main transmission nodes of embodied energy-related GHG emission flows were identified. While approximately half of the energy-related CH₄ emissions occurred at the fourth or higher production layers, the CO₂ emissions were distributed evenly across the production layers. Mitigating energy-related GHG emissions associated with manufacturing economy by adjusting critical industrial sectors and final demands provides new insights for understanding the transitions of China's manufacturing industries to a low-carbon economy.

Examining Supply Chain for Seafood Industries Using Structural Path Analysis

The present study investigates the supply chain for seafood industries in Korea. Unlike previous studies, which analyze the supply chain from input users’ perspective only, the present study examines the supply chain from both input users’ (backward linkage) and input suppliers’ (forward linkage) perspectives. In doing so, this study utilizes structural path analyses (SPAs) to scrutinize the specific paths along which the effects of a shock to a seafood industry are transmitted in both backward and forward directions. This study executes these two types of SPAs (backward linkage and forward linkage SPAs) for three seafood industries in Korea that include wild fisheries, aquaculture, and seafood processing, thus depicting a more detailed and complete picture of the mechanisms through which the influences of the seafood industries spill over to the rest of the economy. One important finding is that our SPAs are able to identify a number of seemingly unlikely non-seafood industries that play a critical role in transmitting the effects of a shock to a seafood industry.
