Analysis of the Importance of Oxides and Clays in Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn Adsorption and Retention with Regression Trees

Trace metal content prediction along an AMD (acid mine drainage)-contaminated stream draining a coal mine using VNIR-SWIR spectroscopy

The current study investigated the use of VNIR-SWIR (visible/near infrared to short-wavelength infrared: 400-2500 nm) spectroscopy for predicting trace metals in overbank sediments collected in the study site. Here, we (i) derived spectral absorption feature parameters (SAFPs) from measured ground spectra for correlation with trace metal (Pb, Cd, As, and Cu) contents in overbank sediments, (ii) built univariate regression models to predict trace metal concentrations using the SAFPs, and (iii) evaluated the predictive capacities of the regression models. The derived SAFPs associated with goethite in overbank sediments were Depth433b, Asym433b, and Width433b, and those associated with kaolinite in overbank sediments were Depth1366b, Asym1366b, Width1366b, Depth2208b, Asym2208b, and Width2208b. Cadmium in the overbank sediments showed the strongest correlations with the goethite-related SAFPs, whereas Pb, As, and Cu showed strong correlations with goethite- and kaolinite-related SAFPs. The best predictive models were obtained for Cu (R2 = 0.73, SEE = 0.15) and Pb (R2 = 0.73, SEE = 0.21), while weaker models were obtained for As (R2 = 0.46, SEE = 0.31) and Cd (R2 = 0.17, SEE = 0.81). The results suggest that trace metals can be predicted indirectly using the SAFPs associated with goethite and kaolinite. This is an important benefit of VNIR-SWIR spectroscopy considering the difficulty in analyzing "trace" metal concentrations, on large scales, using conventional geochemical methods.

Soil physicochemical properties associated with the yield and phytochemical composition of the edible halophyte Crithmum maritimum

There is growing interest in the consumption of halophytes due to their excellent nutritional profile and antioxidant properties, and their cultivation offers viable alternatives in the face of irreversible global salinization of soils. Nevertheless, abiotic factors strongly influence their phytochemical composition, and little is known about how growing conditions can produce plants with the best nutritional and functional properties. Crithmum maritimum is an edible halophyte with antioxidant properties and considerable potential for sustainable agriculture in marginal environments. However, it is found naturally in contrasting habitats with variable soil physicochemical properties and the extent to which edaphic factors can influence plant performance, accumulation of phytochemicals and their quality remains unknown. We investigated the influence of soil physicochemical properties (texture, pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter content and mineral element concentrations) on growth and reproductive performance, nutritional traits, and the accumulation of specific metabolites in C. maritimum. Soil, leaf and seed samples were taken from eight C. maritimum populations located on the southern coasts of Spain and Portugal. We found greater vegetative growth and seed production in coarser, sandier soils with lower microelement concentrations. The nutritional traits of leaves varied, with soil organic matter and macronutrient content associated with reduced leaf Na, protein and phenolic (mainly flavonoid) concentrations, whereas soils with lower pH and Fe concentrations, and higher clay content yielded plants with lower leaf Zn concentration and greater accumulation of hydroxycinnamic acids. The nutritional value of the seed oil composition appeared to be enhanced in soils with coarser texture and lower microelement concentrations. The accumulation of specific phenolic compounds in the seed was influenced by a wide range of soil properties including texture, pH and some microelements. These findings will inform the commercial cultivation of C. maritimum, particularly in the economic exploitation of poorly utilized, saline soils.

Emerging applications of high-precision Cu isotopic analysis by MC-ICP-MS

As a component of many minerals and an essential trace element in most aerobic organisms, the transition metal element Cu is important for studying reduction-oxidation (redox) interactions and metal cycling in the total environment (lithosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and anthroposphere). The "fractionation" or relative partitioning of the naturally occurring "heavy" (⁶⁵Cu) and "light" (⁶³Cu) isotope between two coexisting phases in a system occurs according to bonding environment and/or as a result of a slight difference in the rate at which these isotopes take part in physical processes and chemical reactions (in absence of equilibrium). Due to this behaviour, Cu isotopic analysis can be used to study a range of geochemical and biological processes that cannot be elucidated with Cu concentrations alone. The shift between Cu⁺ and Cu²⁺ is accompanied by a large degree of Cu isotope fractionation, enabling the Cu isotope to be applied as a vector in mineral exploration, tracer of origin, transport, and fate of metal contaminants in the environment, biomonitor, and diagnostic/prognostic marker of disease, among other applications. In this contribution, we (1) discuss the analytical protocols that are currently available to perform Cu isotopic analysis, (2) provide a compilation of published δ⁶⁵Cu values for matrix reference materials, (3) review Cu isotope fractionation mechanisms, (4) highlight emerging applications of Cu isotopic analysis, and (5) discuss future research avenues.

Inter-estuarine and seasonal to decadal variations of heavy metal pollution in the Gulf of Cambay, India

Toxic heavy metals adsorbed preferentially onto suspended sediments enter our food chain by bio-assimilation in coastal ocean organisms. To decipher metal pollution status in the Gulf of Cambay (food hub of India) under rising anthropogenic pressure, we present seasonal abundances of Ti, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in > 150 samples of suspended sediments (> 0.45 µm) collected in four seasons (2016-2017) from two large estuaries (Narmada and Tapi). The suspended sediments of both the estuaries generally show low heavy metal pollution (I_geo < 1). The hotspots of moderate-to-high pollution of Pb (I_geo < 4), Cd (I_geo < 3), and Zn (I_geo < 2) are found at salinity < 2, and those of Co (I_geo < 2) at salinity ~ 20-30 in the Tapi estuary during the non-monsoon seasons indicating their decoupled sources in Surat. The PLI values show no or little seasonality in the overall metal pollution status of both the estuaries. A comparison with the literature data suggests that suspended sediments efficiently capture active metal pollution in Indian estuaries. Furthermore, a recent decline (2004-2017) in estuarine metal pollution in the Gulf of Cambay found in this study could be due to enhanced organic matter supplies by enhanced urban sewage discharge and/or more trapping of contaminated riverine sediments upstream of the newly built large dam reservoirs counteracting the growth of anthropogenic metal inputs in the Narmada and Tapi watersheds. The data scarcity of heavy metal concentrations in suspended sediments limits reporting unambiguously the current pollution status of other major Indian estuaries.

Proposal of new distribution coefficients (Kd) of potentially toxic elements in soils for improving environmental risk assessment in the State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil

Soil solid-solution distribution coefficients (K_d) are used in predictive environmental models to assess public health risks. This study was undertaken to determine K_d for potentially toxic elements (PTE) Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in topsoil samples (0-20 cm) from 30 soils in the State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. Batch sorption experiments were carried out, and PTE concentrations in the equilibrium solution were determined by High Resolution Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (HR-ICPMS). Sorption data was fitted to the Freundlich model. The K_d values were either obtained directly from the slope coefficients of C-type isotherms or derived from the slope of the straight line tangent to the non-linear L-type and H-type isotherms. Stepwise multiple regression models were used to estimate the K_d values through the combined effect of a number of soil attributes [pH_H2O, effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC) and contents of clay, organic carbon, and Fe (oxy)hydroxides]. The smallest variation in K_d values was recorded for Cu (105-4598 L kg^-1), Pb (121-7020 L kg^-1), Ni (6-998 L kg^-1), as variation across four orders of magnitude was observed for Cd (7-14,339 L kg^-1), Co (2-34,473 L kg^-1), and Cr (1-21,267 L kg^-1). The K_d values for Zn were between 5 and 123,849 L kg^-1. According to median values of K_d, PTE were sorbed in the following preferential order: Pb > Cu > Cd > Ni > Zn > Cr > Co. The K_d values were best predicted using metal-specific and highly significant (p < 0.001) linear regressions that included pH_H2O, ECEC, and clay contents. The K_d values reported in this study are a novel result that can help minimize erroneous estimates and improve both environmental and public health risk assessments under humid tropical edaphoclimatic conditions.

Intrinsic soil property effects on Cd phytotoxicity to Ligustrum japonicum 'Howardii' expressed as different fractions of Cd in forest soils

A better comprehensive understanding of the influence of soil/solution properties on cadmium (Cd) phytotoxicity is essential for soil Cd ecological risk assessment. The toxicity of soil spiked Cd to Ligustrum japonicum 'Howardii' seedling growth was conducted by the greenhouse pot experiments using 13 typical forest soils selected from mainland of China. The results showed that the ranges of Cd toxicity thresholds of 10% seedling growth inhibition (EC₁₀) and 50% inhibition (EC₅₀) followed the order: soil pore water Cd (EC₁₀ on average 0.88 mg L^-1 with the variation of 54.9 folds and EC₅₀ on average 2.28 mg L^-1 with variation of 41.8 folds), DTPA extractable Cd (EC₁₀ on average 5.4 mg kg^-1 with 20.9 folds variation and EC₅₀ on average 17.86 mg kg^-1 with 6.6 folds variation), total added Cd (EC₁₀ on average 6.55 mg kg^-1 with 16.7 folds variation and EC₅₀ on average 22.11 mg kg^-1 with 5.1 folds variation), which suggested that whatever the available Cd expressed, its toxicity is largely affected by soil properties. The empirical multiple equations were well developed between different fractions of Cd toxicity thresholds ECx (x = 10 or 50) and soil/solution. The results also showed that the pH inversely correlated with EC₁₀ (r² = 0.54, P < 0.01) and EC₅₀ (r² = 0.63, P < 0.001) based on soil pore water, indicating the ECx decreased with more toxicity as pH increased. No single significant soil solution properties were found for ECx in DTPA extractable Cd. For the ECx of DTPA extractable and total Cd, the content of aluminum oxides in soil and soil pH were the two significant factors inversely related with ECx, which explained 68%-79% of the inter-soil variation, respectively. Overall, soil or solution pH was the most important factor controlling Cd toxicity thresholds. Meanwhile, significant negative correlations existed between the soil solution pH and the slopes of parameter (b) of the dose-response curves for different fractions of Cd, implying that the growth of toxic effect enhanced as unit Cd dosage increased in low pH soils. These results will be helpful to evaluate the metal ecological risk in forest soils.

Clay mineralogy affects the efficiency of sewage sludge in reducing lead retention of soils

Recent studies have shown the feasibility of using of sewage sludge for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils. However, there are no researches to check the influence of clay mineralogy on the efficiency of the sewage sludge to remediation of contaminated soils with heavy metals. For this purpose, we use two contrasting soils: Oxisol rich in hematite and gibbsite and Inceptisol rich in kaolinite. Thermal-treated sludge was applied to Pb-contaminated soil samples and incubated for 40 days. The soil samples were submitted to seven sequential extractions: soluble-Pb, exchangeable-Pb, precipitated-Pb, organic matter-Pb, Fe and Mn oxide-Pb, gibbsite and kaolinite-Pb, and residual-Pb. The reduction of soluble Pb forms by thermal sludge application was more pronounced in the Oxisol than in the Inceptisol because of the conversion of soluble-Pb into more stable forms, such as precipitated-Pb and oxides-Pb. For Inceptisol was necessary to apply high rates of thermal sludge to reach a significant reduction in soluble-Pb contents. The addition of humic fractions in the form of thermal sludge increased the concentration of organic matter-Pb. In confined area, the use of sewage sludge to reduce the heavy metals levels in soils must be better considered, mainly in more weathered soils.

Multivariate analysis reveals significant diuron-related changes in the soil composition of different Brazilian regions

Sorption and desorption determine the amount of an herbicide in soil solution. Therefore, knowledge of the sorption and desorption coefficients in different soils is an essential factor to estimate the potential for environmental contamination by herbicides. We evaluated the feasibility of multivariate and linear discriminant analyses to predict the sorption and desorption capacity of a soil for diuron, one of the most used herbicides on sugarcane plantations. The adsorptive capacity in twenty-seven Brazilian soil samples was estimated using the sorption constant (Kfs) and desorption constant (Kfd) obtained by the Freundlich isotherms. The regression model was created from the sorbed and nonsorbed concentrations of diuron in soils. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography was applied to quantify the diuron concentrations. The multivariate analysis separated the soils into four groups considering the similarity of the following attributes: pH, organic matter, clay, and base saturation. The groups showed a similar pattern of sorption and desorption for diuron: Lom-Lclay: low sorption (5.9 ± 1.2) and high desorption (10.9 ± 0.6); Lclay: low sorption (7.5 ± 1.1) and high desorption (11.4 ± 1.3); Hom-Hclay: high sorption (11.2 ± 1.2) and low desorption (13.8 ± 1.2); HpH-Hclay: high sorption (10.1 ± 1.1) and medium desorption (11.5 ± 1.4). Linear discriminant analysis of these soil attributes was used to classify other soils described in the literature with adsorption capacity. This analysis was able to identify soils with high and low sorption using the pH, organic matter, clay, and base saturation, demonstrating the enormous potential of the technique to group soils with different contamination risks for subterranean waters. Sugarcane crops in northeastern Brazil showed a higher pollution risk through the leaching of diuron. Multivariate analysis revealed significant diuron-related changes in the soil composition of different Brazilian regions; therefore, this statistical analysis can be used to improve understanding of herbicide behavior in soils.

Health risk assessment of potentially toxic elements in soils along the Central Elbe River, Germany

Floodplain soils across Central Elbe River (CER), Germany, vary considerably in potentially toxic element (PTE) content. However, there has never been a comprehensive study that links PTE levels with human health risk for children and adults. Our objective was to determine the contamination of 13 PTEs in 94 soil profiles along CER and assess the associated health risk via diverse indices for adults and children. Of 94 soil profiles, we measured soil properties and total content of arsenic, barium, chromium, copper, nickel, lead, rubidium, tin, strontium, vanadium, zinc, and zirconium using x-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF). We calculated the Contamination Factor and the Pollution Load Index (PLI), and assessed the health risk for male and female adults as well as for children. Topsoil median contents of Cr (84 mg kg^-1), Cu (42), Ni (33), and Zn (195) exceeded the Precautionary Values for sandy soils according to the German Federal Soil Protection and Contaminated Sites Ordinance, while As, Pb, and V were 32, 73, and 77 mg kg^-1, respectively. Median topsoil PLI was 1.73, indicating elevated multi-element contamination, with 90th percentile and maximum values being 3.20 and 4.31, respectively. All PTE concentrations were higher in top- compared to subsoils. Also at the 50th percentile the most enriched elements were Sn and As, followed by Zr and Rb, while in the 90th percentile Sn and As were followed by Zn, Pb and Cu. Median children's hazard index (HI) was higher than unity (HI = 2.27) and the 90th percentile was 5.53, indicating elevated health risk. Adult median HIs were 0.18 for male and 0.21 for female persons. Arsenic was found to be the primary contributor to total risk, accounting of 57.4% of HI in all three-person groupings, with Cr (17.3%) being the second, and V (10.2%) the third. Children's health is at dramatically higher risk than that of adults; also As, Cr, Pb, and V have a predominant role in contamination-related health risks. The presence of V, a less-expected element, among those of major risk contribution, reveals the necessity of monitoring areas at large scale. Our results demonstrate that our study may serve as a model for similar works studying multi-element-contaminated areas in future.

Influence of human impacts on trace metal accumulation in soils of two Hungarian cities

Despite the advanced activity of urban soil research, comparison of available trace metal contents in the soil of settlements has not yet been well investigated. First aim of research was the comparison of human impacts on urban soils in two Hungarian cities with different structure and development. To detect the sources of contamination, Szombathely and Sopron cities were separated into urban, suburban and peri-urban areas. Altogether 192 topsoil samples were collected at 0-20 cm in order to measure the physicochemical properties of the soil. Instead of total element contents, plant-available trace metal concentrations - Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn - were determined using ICP-OES method. Due to different geological conditions, urban soils of the investigated settlements had similar properties in the case of pH, CaCO₃ and texture. In the case of plant available trace metals, limit excesses were found in urban and peri-urban areas mostly, but high values were recorded in the suburb. The amount of Cd_available, Co_available and Ni_available were negligible. Downtown area was the most contaminated in both cities, but extremes appeared in suburban areas. In Szombathely, Cu_available values were <40 mg Cu/kg, but extremely high Cu_available results were found in the peri-urban viticulture areas of Sopron (>90 mg Cu/kg). The samples taken alongside busy roads near the city centre were Pb_available-contaminated due to traffic. The Pb_available concentration decreased slightly towards the suburban areas of the cities. The Zn_available level exceeded 40 mg Zn/kg in soils taken from the watercourses of Szombathely. The highest trace metal pollution levels were recorded in soils of public parks of Sopron. Urban soils of Szombathely were more homogenized than urban soils of Sopron. Based on statistical analyses and comparison of the relations of urban, suburban, and peri-urban areas of Sopron to Szombathely, Szombathely's urban soils show more homogeneity.

Analysis of the adsorption and retention models for Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn through neural networks: selection of variables and competitive model

In this study, the neural networks are used to predict and explain the behavior of different edaphological variables in the adsorption and retention of heavy metals, both isolated and competing. A comparison with the results obtained using multiple regression, stepwise analysis, and regression trees is performed. In the neural network technique, CEC amorphous and crystallized oxides and kaolinite in the clay fraction are the most selected variables for making the optimal models, while mica and, to a lesser extent, plagioclase, are the next variables selected. Additionally, a competitive model has been considered, using simultaneously different metals. In the competitive model, the model predicts a more intense competence between Pb and Ni for the adsorption process and between Cr and Ni for the retention process.

Sensitive biomarkers identification for differentiating Cd and Pb induced toxicity on zebrafish embryos

Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are naturally existing heavy metals that pose significant health risks. The present study aims to identify sensitive biomarkers for differentiating the toxicities induced by Cd and Pb and for providing clues for the early prediction of toxicity and environmental risk assessment. Indicators related to oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in zebrafish treated with Cd and Pb over time (from 24hpf to 96hpf) were compared. Furthermore, endpoints such as embryo lethality and teratogenicity were detected. Then, several related genes involved in oxidative stress and inflammatory responses characterizing both Cd and Pb exposure, along with key molecules in the MAPKs pathway, were compared at the mRNA level, allowing the selection of the most sensitive and informative biomarkers. Significant increases in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production were observed in zebrafish exposed to Cd and Pb. Cd and Pb exposure induced developmental toxicity, influencing survival rate, hatching rate, larval growth, and heart rate and causing abnormal embryonic development. Similar trends in SOD1 and SOD2 gene expression were induced by Cd and Pb, while nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) gene expression responded differently to each metal. In addition, Cd and Pb induced a delayed activation of the CAT and HO-1 genes, with no apparent change in the 24hpf and 48hpf groups. Genes related to immunotoxicity were activated significantly in a time-dependent manner, and these genes exhibited different sensitivities to Cd and Pb. MAPKs pathway genes were also activated in a time-dependent manner, and the expression of these genes showed different effects under Cd and Pb treatment. In summary, the present works have identified some potential sensitive biomarkers. The Nrf2 gene is a potential biomarker to differentiate Pb-induced toxicity from that of Cd, and the IFN-γ gene may be used as a sensitive biomarker for evaluating the risk of Pb contamination. We found that the timeline of MAPKs pathway activation helped to differentiate these two metals toxicities. Furthermore, Pb induced the early activation of ERK2/3 and JNK1, while p38 MAPKs showed delayed activation with no apparent change in the 24hpf group. Cd induced an early activation of ERK2 and a delayed activation of p38a, p38b, ERK3 and JNK1, indicating that the JNK1 pathway is sensitive to Pb exposure, while the p38 pathway may be susceptible to Cd. This work contributes to sensitive biomarker identification and early environmental risk evaluation for chemicals as well as toxicity prediction.
