Abstract
Liver ischemia/reperfusion (IR) often affects distant organs, such as small intestine, kidney, and lung. Coriandrum sativum (CS) has an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect on liver damage. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic effects of CS extract on small intestine, lung, and kidney after the liver IR injury. Small intestine, lung, and kidney tissues were evaluated and scored in terms of cell degeneration, inflammation, and congestion, as well as caspase-3 (Cas-3) and cluster of differentiation 31 (CD31) immunostainings were carried out. Renal enzymes, creatinine and urea levels were measured biochemically in serum. After IR, a decrease in villi size, diffuse degeneration, epithelial cell shedding and extensive congestion in the capillaries were observed. Meanwhile, the number of degenerated villi and congestion decreased in the IR+CS group. Due to IR, increased congestion was detected in the interalveolar septum of the lungs and in the capillaries between the kidney tubules. It was also observed that the positively stained cells with Cas-3 and CD31 were increased in the lung, kidney, and small intestine tissues of the IR group, and decreased in the IR+CS group. Kidney enzymes, urea and creatinine levels were significantly increased in the IR group and decreased in the IR+CS group. In conclusion, it was observed that liver IR caused changes in distant organs, especially in the small intestine, lung, and kidneys. Damaging effects of IR as well as apoptosis and inflammation were found to be decreased in the groups treated with CS.

Abstract
Lung ischemia reperfusion (IR) is known to occur after lung transplantation or cardiac bypass. IR leads to tissue inflammation and damage and is also associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Various receptors are known to partake in activation of the innate immune system, but the downstream mechanism of tissue damage and inflammation is yet unknown. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are in the forefront in regulating ischemia reperfusion injury and are involved in inflammatory response. Here, we have identified by high-throughput approach and evaluated a distinct set of miRNAs that may play a role in response to IR in rat lung tissue. The top three differentially expressed miRNAs were validated through quantitative PCRs in the IR rat lung model and an in vitro model of IR of hypoxia and reoxygenation exposed type II alveolar cells. Among the miRNAs, miR-18a-5p showed consistent downregulation in both the model systems on IR. Cellular and molecular analysis brought to light a crucial role of this miRNA in ischemia reperfusion. miR-18a-5p plays a role in IR-mediated apoptosis and ROS production and regulates the expression of neuropeptide Galanin. It also influences the nuclear localization of transcription factor: nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) which in turn may regulate the expression of the miR-18a gene. Thus, we have not only established a rat model for lung IR and enumerated the important miRNAs involved in IR but have also extensively characterized the role of miR-18a-5p. This study will have important clinical and therapeutic implications for and during transplantation procedures.

Abstract
AIM This research examined silibinin's anti-inflammatory outcomes on the NOD-like receptor protein-3 (NLRP3) and NF-κB gene expression, which plays a notable role in inciting inflammatory pathways. BACKGROUND Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) is a common phenomenon in many clinical cases, including liver surgery and transplantation. Inflammatory mediators are vital contributors to the expansion of hepatic damage after I/R injury (I/RI), and therefore, targeting inflammation is a considerable candidate for the management of hepatic I/RI and its complications. METHODS Thirty-two male Wistar rats were divided equally into four groups: 1) Control (Vehicle) group, in which rats underwent laparotomy and received normal saline; 2) SILI group, in which rats underwent laparotomy, and 30 mg/kg silibinin was injected intraperitoneal (IP); 3) I/R group, in which rats underwent I/R and received normal saline; and 4) I/R + SILI group, who encountered I/R after laparotomy and received silibinin. After one hour of ischemia and three hours of reperfusion, blood and liver tissue samples were assembled for future biochemical, histological, and gene expression studies. RESULTS In vivo analysis attested that serum AST and ALT activities were significantly lessened by silibinin in the SILI + I/R group (p <0.001). Silibinin ameliorated inflammatory liver tissue injuries, including neutrophil and macrophage infiltration, hepatocyte degeneration, cytoplasmic vacuolation, vascular endothelial damages, and sinusoid dilation observed in the I/R group. During I/R, NLRP3 and NF-κB gene expression showed a significant increment compared to the control group (p <0.001), which could be alleviated by silibinin (p <0.01). CONCLUSION The results evidence that adjusting the expression of NLRP3 and NF-κB genes during I/R is probably one of the mechanisms of the anti-inflammatory effects of silibinin.

Abstract
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with widespread effects on distant organs, including the lungs. Surfactant protein (SP)-A and SP-D are members of the C-type lectin family, which plays a critical role in host defense and regulation of inflammation in a variety of infections. Serum levels of SP-A and SP-D are markers to reflect lung injury in acute respiratory distress syndrome, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and sarcoidosis. We investigated the change of lung-specific markers, including SP-A and SP-D in an AKI mice model. We studied C57BL/6J mice 4 and 24 hours after an episode of ischemic AKI (23 min of renal pedicle clamping and then reperfusion); numerous derangements were present, including SP-A, SP-D, and lung tight-junction protein. Neutrophil infiltration and apoptosis in the lungs increased in ischemic AKI. Receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) in the lungs, a marker of pneumocyte I, was not changed. Lung tight-junction proteins, particularly claudin-4, claudin-18, and anti-junctional adhesion molecule 1 (JAMA-1), were reduced in 24 hours after AKI. Serum SP-A and SP-D significantly increased in ischemic AKI. SP-A and SP-D in the lungs did not increase in ischemic AKI. The immunohistochemistry showed that the expression of SP-A and SP-D was intact in ischemic AKI. SP-A and SP-D in the kidneys were significantly higher in AKI than in the sham. These patterns of SP-A and SP-D in the kidneys were similar to those of serum. AKI induces apoptosis and inflammation in the lungs. Serum SP-A and SP-D increased in ischemic AKI, but these could have originated from the kidneys. So serum SP-A and SP-D could not reflect lung injury in AKI. Further study is needed to reveal how a change in lung tight-junction protein could influence the prognosis in patients with AKI.

Abstract
Damage to the ovaries or tissue torsion can significantly reduce the ovarian reserve and thus cause severe gynecological and hormonal deficiencies. The discovery of new agents is always needed in the treatment of this condition. Metformin (MET) has been shown to be beneficial in attenuating ovarian ischemia-reperfusion injury. Fifty-six female Sprague Dawley rats were divided into seven groups. Group 1 represented the control group (C), Group 2, the ischemia group (I), and Group 3, the ischemia/reperfusion group (I/R). Group 4, the ischemia (I)+250 group, and Group 5, the ischemia (I)+500 group, received 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg MET, respectively. Group 6, the ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)+250 group, and Group 7, the ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)+500 group, received 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg MET, respectively. Tissue malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels in ovarian tissue increased following I/R, while estradiol (E2) levels decreased. Moreover, infiltration and diffuse edematous areas were observed in addition to diffuse vascular congestion and hemorrhage findings. Caspase-3 and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κβ) expression levels also increased. MDA and TNF-α concentrations decreased in the MET treatment groups, while GSH and E2 levels increased. The findings showed that I/R causes ovarian damage through the induction of oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. However, MET application was effective in preventing damage in ovarian tissue by reducing levels of reactive oxygen species, proinflammatory cytokines, caspase-3 and NF-κβ.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The usefulness of sericin as pleurodesis agent has previously been described. Present study aims to compare sericin pleurodesis regarding success, effectiveness, tolerability, and side-effects. METHODS Adult, 12-week-old Wistar-albino rats (n=60), divided to five groups as sericin, talcum-powder, doxycycline, silver-nitrate and control. Agents were administrated through left thoracotomy, rats sacrificed twelve-days after. RESULTS Highest ratio of collagen fibers was observed in sericin group, and the intensity was higher than talcum-powder group (p<0.05). Compared to silver nitrate, sericin group displayed better mesothelial reaction, and multi-layer mesothelium was also better (p<0.05). Foreign body reaction and emphysema were less frequent in sericin group (p<0.05). The presence of biological tissue in parenchyma was less prominent in sericin group (p<0.05). Foreign body reaction on thoracic wall was less common in sericin group (p<0.05). Presence of biological tissue glue in thoracic wall was less prominent in sericin group (p<0.05). Glomerular degeneration was lower in sericin group compared to the silver nitrate group (p<0.05), and tubular degeneration was less common in sericin group than talcum group (p<0.05). Pericarditis was less common in sericin group compared to the other groups (p<0.05). CONCLUSION As an intrinsic, natural glue protein, sericin protects the lung parenchyma and tissues, and its glue-like characteristics enable pleurodesis. The success of sericin in pleurodesis was demonstrated in the present study based on investigations of the pleurae. Being cost-effective and better tolerated agent associated with a low potential of side effects, sericin is more effective, less expensive and provides more lung parenchyma protection.
