Galectin-3 level predicts response to ablation and outcomes in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation and systolic heart failure

Correlations of sST2 and Gal-3 with Cardiothoracic Ratio in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) frequently correlates with cardiovascular complications. Soluble suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (sST2) and Galectin-3 (Gal-3) are emerging as cardiac markers with potential relevance in cardiovascular risk prediction. The cardiothoracic ratio (CTR), a metric easily obtainable from chest radiographs, has traditionally been used to assess cardiac size and the potential for cardiomegaly. Understanding the correlation between these cardiac markers and the cardiothoracic ratio (CTR) could provide valuable insights into the cardiovascular prognosis of CKD patients. This study aimed to explore the relationship between sST2, Gal-3, and the CTR in individuals with CKD. Plasma concentrations of sST2 and Gal-3 were assessed in a cohort of 123 CKD patients by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). On a posterior-to-anterior chest X-ray view, the CTR was determined by comparing the widths of the heart to that of the thorax. The mean concentration of sST2 in the study participants ranged from 775.4 to 4475.6 pg/mL, and the mean concentration of Gal-3 ranged from 4.7 to 9796.0 ng/mL. Significant positive correlations were observed between sST2 and the CTR (r = 0.291, p < 0.001) and between Gal-3 and the CTR (r = 0.230, p < 0.01). Our findings indicate that elevated levels of sST2 and Gal-3 are associated with an increased CTR in CKD patients. This relationship may enable better cardiovascular risk evaluation for CKD patients. Further studies are warranted to explore the clinical implications of these associations.

Pathophysiology and clinical relevance of atrial myopathy

Atrial myopathy is a condition that consists of electrical, structural, contractile, and autonomic remodeling of the atria and is the substrate for development of atrial fibrillation, the most common arrhythmia. Pathophysiologic mechanisms driving atrial myopathy are inflammation, oxidative stress, atrial stretch, and neurohormonal signals, e.g., angiotensin-II and aldosterone. These mechanisms initiate the structural and functional remodeling of the atrial myocardium. Novel therapeutic strategies are being developed that target the pathophysiologic mechanisms of atrial myopathy. In this review, we will discuss the pathophysiology of atrial myopathy, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

The Role of Galectin-3 in Heart Failure-The Diagnostic, Prognostic and Therapeutic Potential-Where Do We Stand?

Heart failure (HF) is a clinical syndrome with high morbidity and mortality, and its prevalence is rapidly increasing. Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is an important factor in the pathophysiology of HF, mainly due to its role in cardiac fibrosis, inflammation, and ventricular remodeling. Fibrosis is a hallmark of cardiac remodeling, HF, and atrial fibrillation development. This review aims to explore the involvement of Gal-3 in HF and its role in the pathogenesis and clinical diagnostic and prognostic significance. We report data on Gal-3 structure and molecular mechanisms of biological function crucial for HF development. Over the last decade, numerous studies have shown an association between echocardiographic and CMR biomarkers in HF and Gal-3 serum concentration. We discuss facts and concerns about Gal-3's utility in acute and chronic HF with preserved and reduced ejection fraction for diagnosis, prognosis, and risk stratification. Finally, we present attempts to use Gal-3 as a therapeutic target in HF.

The Role of Galectin-3 in Predicting Congenital Heart Disease Outcome: A Review of the Literature

Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a novel pro-fibrotic biomarker that can predict both right and left cardiac dysfunction caused by various cardiovascular conditions. Its expression seems to be progressively altered with evolving cardiac remodeling processes, even before the onset of heart failure. Hence, Gal-3 has been found to be an individual predictor of acute and chronic heart failure or to serve as part of an integrated biomarker panel that can foresee adverse cardiac outcomes. In congenital heart disease (CHD), Gal-3 correlates with cardiac mortality and complications in both children and adults and is proposed as a therapeutic target in order to reverse the activation of pro-fibrosis pathways that lead to heart failure. Positive associations between serum Gal-3 levels, post-operatory hospitalization rates, complications and ventricular dysfunction have also been reported within studies conducted on patients with CHD who underwent corrective surgery. Thus, this review tried to address the potential utility of Gal-3 in patients with CHD and particularly in those who undergo corrective surgery. The heterogeneity of the literature data and the lack of validation of the results obtained by the current studies on larger cohorts cannot be neglected, though. Further longitudinal research is required to establish how Gal-3 can relate to long-term outcomes in pediatric CHD.

Long-Term Changes in the Biomarkers of Left Atrial Fibrosis after Pulmonary Vein Isolation for Paroxysmal and Persistent Atrial Fibrillation

Background

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is accompanied by inflammation and fibrosis to variable extent. The biomarkers of fibrosis were measured in patients with different forms of AF and cardiac status. Herein, we assessed the associations of the baseline concentrations of different biomarkers with the long-term success of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) in patients with a structurally normal heart. Furthermore, we compared biomarker levels before and 3 years after ablation to gain further insights into the AF mechanism.

Methods

Patients, undergoing PVI for paroxysmal/persistent AF were enrolled prospectively. Blood samples were obtained 24 hours before and 3 years after ablation. Serum cancer antigen 125 (CA-125), plasma Caspase-3, Galectin-3 and Cathepsin L concentrations were measured. Follow-up visits every 6 months included 12-lead electrocardiogram, 24-hour Holter, trans-telephonic monitoring as well as transthoracic echocardiography after ablation. Biomarker levels, left ventricular ejection fraction and left atrial (LA) diameters at baseline and at the 3-year follow-up were compared in patients with versus without AF recurrence.

Results

A total of 63 patients were enrolled (23 women; age 61.4 ( ± 8.8) years). The acute isolation of all pulmonary veins was achieved in all patients. During a mean follow-up of 36.3 ± 6.3 months, AF recurrence was demonstrated in 26 (41.3%) patients. No significant differences were demonstrated in the levels of CA-125, Galectin-3, Caspase-3 and Cathepsin L pre- and post-ablation in patients with versus without AF recurrence. A significant decrease was detected in the concentrations of Caspase-3, Galectin-3 and Cathepsin L during follow-up with no difference in patients with versus without AF recurrence. A positive correlation was found between Caspase-3 levels and LA diameters in the AF recurrence group both before (r = 0.477; p = 0.018) and after the procedure (r = 0.533; p = 0.019).

Conclusions

Our results demonstrated that the levels of CA-125, Caspase-3, Cathepsin L and Galectin-3 are not associated with AF recurrence after PVI in patients with a structurally normal heart and mainly paroxysmal AF. Except for CA-125, all the other biomarkers demonstrated a significant decrease during a 3-year follow-up post-ablation. Furthermore, Caspase-3 levels demonstrated a positive correlation with LA dimensions in patients with AF recurrence.

Clinical Phenotypes and Atrial Fibrillation Recurrences after Catheter Ablation: An Unsupervised Cluster Analysis

Catheter ablation (CA) is a well-established treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF). Data-driven cluster analysis is able to better distinguish prognostically-relevant phenotype clusters among patients with AF. We performed a hierarchical cluster analysis in a cohort of AF patients undergoing a first CA and evaluate associations between identified clusters and recurrences of arrhythmia following ablation. The study included 209 AF patients treated with CA. 3 clusters with distinct characteristics were identified. Recurrences at one year occurred in 27.2% in Cluster 1, 43.2% in Cluster 2 and 60.9% in Cluster 3 (p<0.0001). Cluster classification was independently associated with arrhythmia recurrences (HR 1.58, 95% CI 1.01-2.49, p=0.046) after adjustment for age, CHA₂DS₂-VASc score, left atrial volume, type of atrial fibrillation and ejection fraction. To concluded, cluster analysis identified three statistically-driven groups among AF patients treated with CA with different risks for arrhythmia recurrences.

Galectin-3 is an independent predictor of postoperative atrial fibrillation and survival after elective cardiac surgery

BACKGROUND

Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a frequent complication after heart surgery and is associated with thromboembolic events, prolonged hospital stay, and adverse outcomes. Inflammation and fibrosis are involved in the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to assess whether galectin-3, which reflects preexisting atrial fibrosis, has the potential to predict POAF and mortality after cardiac surgery.

METHODS

Four hundred seventy-five consecutive patients (mean age 67.4 ± 11.8 years; 336 (70.7%) male) undergoing elective heart surgery at the Medical University of Vienna were included in this prospective single-center cohort study. Galectin-3 plasma levels were assessed on the day before surgery.

RESULTS

The 200 patients (42.1%) who developed POAF had significantly higher galectin-3 levels (9.60 ± 6.83 ng/mL vs 7.10 ± 3.54 ng/mL; P < .001). Galectin-3 significantly predicted POAF in multivariable logistic regression analysis (adjusted odds ratio per 1-SD increase 1.44; 95% confidence interval 1.15-1.81; P = .002). During a median follow-up of 4.3 years (interquartile range 3.4-5.4 years), 72 patients (15.2%) died. Galectin-3 predicted all-cause mortality in multivariable Cox regression analysis (adjusted hazard ratio per 1-SD increase 1.56; 95% confidence interval 1.16-2.09; P = .003). Patients with the highest-risk galectin-3 levels according to classification and regression tree analysis (>11.70 ng/mL) had a 3.3-fold higher risk of developing POAF and a 4.4-fold higher risk of dying than did patients with the lowest-risk levels (≤5.82 ng/mL).

CONCLUSION

The profibrotic biomarker galectin-3 is an independent predictor of POAF and mortality after cardiac surgery. This finding highlights the role of the underlying arrhythmogenic substrate in the genesis of POAF. Galectin-3 may help to identify patients at risk of POAF and adverse outcome after cardiac surgery.

Galectin-3 as a Potential Prognostic Biomarker for COVID-19 Disease: A Case-Control Study

Background

Recent studies have investigated the importance of Galetin-3 in inflammation, fibrosis, cell proliferation, cardiac disease, diabetes, and tumor formation.

Aims

This study aims to investigate the role of the Galectin-3 level in the diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia and the value of the Galectin-3 level in predicting the clinical course of the patient.

Methods

This study employed a prospective, case-control study design and was conducted at Bakircay University Ciğli Training and Research Hospital. A total of 100 patients (40 had moderate and 60 had severe/critical COVID-19 disease according to World Health Organisation guidelines) and 50 non-symptomatic healthy volunteers participated in the study. Blood samples were taken from patients at the time of hospital admission, after which serum was isolated. Following the isolation of serum, Galectin-3 levels were evaluated using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. 

Results

The serum Galectin-3 level was measured as 13.57 (10.9-16.4) ng/mL in the control group, 13.52 (10.69-16.6) ng/mL in the moderate disease group, and 11.65 (6.09-14.33) ng/mL in the severe/critical disease group. Serum Galectin-3 levels were significantly lower in the severe/critical disease group compared to the control and moderate disease groups (p=0.001 and p=0.019, respectively).

Using ROC analysis, a larger area under the curve (AUC) for the serum Galectin-3 levels of the control group (AUC=0.622, 95% CI =0.529-0.714; p=0.015) was calculated compared to the COVID-19 patient group for the diagnosis of COVID-19 disease. The Galectin-3 level was found to be 75% sensitive and 50% specific at a cut-off level of 11.3 ng/mL in predicting the need for ICU treatment.

Conclusion

Galectin-3 levels may be a beneficial biomarker in predicting the clinical severity of COVID-19 disease when used in conjunction with other known biomarkers, at the time of admission to the emergency department (ED).

Cardiovascular Biomarkers: Lessons of the Past and Prospects for the Future

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a major healthcare burden on the population worldwide. Early detection of this disease is important in prevention and treatment to minimise morbidity and mortality. Biomarkers are a critical tool to either diagnose, screen, or provide prognostic information for pathological conditions. This review discusses the historical cardiac biomarkers used to detect these conditions, discussing their application and their limitations. Identification of new biomarkers have since replaced these and are now in use in routine clinical practice, but still do not detect all disease. Future cardiac biomarkers are showing promise in early studies, but further studies are required to show their value in improving detection of CVD above the current biomarkers. Additionally, the analytical platforms that would allow them to be adopted in healthcare are yet to be established. There is also the need to identify whether these biomarkers can be used for diagnostic, prognostic, or screening purposes, which will impact their implementation in routine clinical practice.

The Diagnostic and Therapeutic Potential of Galectin-3 in Cardiovascular Diseases

Galectin-3 plays a prominent role in chronic inflammation and has been implicated in the development of many disease conditions, including heart disease. Galectin-3, a regulatory protein, is elevated in both acute and chronic heart failure and is involved in the inflammatory pathway after injury leading to myocardial tissue remodelling. We discussed the potential utility of galectin-3 as a diagnostic and disease severity/prognostic biomarker in different cardio/cerebrovascular diseases, such as acute ischemic stroke, acute coronary syndromes, heart failure and arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy. Over the last decade there has been a marked increase in the understanding the role of galectin-3 in myocardial fibrosis and inflammation and as a therapeutic target for the treatment of heart failure and myocardial infarction.

Biomarkers in the clinical management of patients with atrial fibrillation and heart failure

Atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) are two cardiovascular diseases with an increasing prevalence worldwide. These conditions share common pathophysiologiesand frequently co-exit. In fact, the occurrence of either condition can 'cause' the development of the other, creating a new patient group that demands different management strategies to that if they occur in isolation. Regardless of the temproral association of the two conditions, their presence is linked with adverse cardiovascular outcomes, increased rate of hospitalizations, and increased economic burden on healthcare systems. The use of low-cost, easily accessible and applicable biomarkers may hasten the correct diagnosis and the effective treatment of AF and HF. Both AF and HF effect multiple physiological pathways and thus a great number of biomarkers can be measured that potentially give the clinician important diagnostic and prognostic information. These will then guide patient centred therapeutic management. The current biomarkers that offer potential for guiding therapy, focus on the physiological pathways of miRNA, myocardial stretch and injury, oxidative stress, inflammation, fibrosis, coagulation and renal impairment. Each of these has different utility in current clinincal practice.

Evaluation of Galectin-3 Plasma Concentration in Adolescents with Ventricular Arrhythmia

Galectin-3 (G3) is a biomarker known as an inflammatory state exponent. The aim of this paper was to analyze the G3 in adolescents with ventricular arrhythmia (VES) in order to evaluate its impact on myocardial tissue preservation. The study group (SG) consisted of 25 VES adolescents. The control group (CG) was 21 healthy children. G3 was assessed in the SG and CG. In the SG electrocardiography, Holter monitoring, echocardiography and CMR were performed. The G3 in SG was 13.45 ± 11.4 ng/mL and in CG 7.2 ± 2.0 ng/mL, p < 0.001. Moderate positive correlation between the G3 and z-score of the left ventricular diameter (r = 0.47, p = 0.041) and moderate negative correlation between the G3 and the left ventricular ejection fraction in cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR EF) (-0.49, p = 0.032) were found. According to the multiple linear regression analysis, CMR EF and VES were independent predictors for G3 elevation. Conclusion: Galectin-3 plasma concentration is elevated and correlates with the chosen left ventricular dysfunction parameters in adolescents suffering from ventricular arrhythmia. Further investigation is necessary to establish if elevated G3 is a useful biomarker for screening young individuals with ventricular arrhythmia who are at risk of structural cardiovascular pathology.

Galectin-3 in Cardiovascular Diseases

Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a β-galactoside-binding protein belonging to the lectin family with pleiotropic regulatory activities and several physiological cellular functions, such as cellular growth, proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, cellular adhesion, and tissue repair. Inflammation, tissue fibrosis and angiogenesis are the main processes in which Gal-3 is involved. It is implicated in the pathogenesis of several diseases, including organ fibrosis, chronic inflammation, cancer, atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). This review aims to explore the connections of Gal-3 with cardiovascular diseases since they represent a major cause of morbidity and mortality. We herein discuss the evidence on the pro-inflammatory role of Gal-3 in the atherogenic process as well as the association with plaque features linked to lesion stability. We report the biological role and molecular mechanisms of Gal-3 in other CVDs, highlighting its involvement in the development of cardiac fibrosis and impaired myocardium remodelling, resulting in heart failure and atrial fibrillation. The role of Gal-3 as a prognostic marker of heart failure is described together with possible diagnostic applications to other CVDs. Finally, we report the tentative use of Gal-3 inhibition as a therapeutic approach to prevent cardiac inflammation and fibrosis.

The therapeutic potential of galectin-3 inhibition in fibrotic disease

Galectin-3 is a beta-galactoside-binding mammalian lectin and part of the 15 member galectin family that are evolutionarily highly conserved. It is the only chimeric protein with a C-terminal carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD) linked to a proline, glycine, and tyrosine rich additional N-terminal domain. Galectin-3 binds several cell surface glycoproteins via its CRD domain as well as undergoing oligomerization, via binding at the N-terminal or the CRD, resulting in the formation of a galectin-3 lattice on the cell surface. The galectin-3 lattice has been regarded as being a crucial mechanism whereby extracellular galectin-3 modulates cellular signalling by prolonging retention time or retarding lateral movement of cell surface receptors in the plasma membrane. As such galectin-3 can regulate various cellular functions such as diffusion, compartmentalization and endocytosis of plasma membrane glycoproteins and glycolipids and the functionality of membrane receptors. In multiple models of organ fibrosis, it has been demonstrated that galectin-3 is potently pro-fibrotic and modulates the activity of fibroblasts and macrophages in chronically inflamed organs. Increased galectin-3 expression also activates myofibroblasts resulting in scar formation and may therefore impact common fibrotic pathways leading to fibrosis in multiple organs. Over the last decade there has been a marked increase in the scientific literature investigating galectin-3 in a range of fibrotic diseases as well as the clinical development of new galectin-3 inhibitors. In this review we will examine the role of galectin-3 in fibrosis, the therapeutic strategies for inhibiting galectin-3 in fibrotic disease and the clinical landscape to date.

Galectin-3 Induces Atrial Fibrosis by Activating the TGF-β1/Smad Pathway in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation

BACKGROUND

Atrial fibrosis plays a critical role in the occurrence and maintenance of atrial fibrillation. The role of TGF-β1 in mediating atrial fibrosis is well documented. The β-galactoside-binding lectin galectin-3 (Gal-3) is mainly produced by macrophages in biological events such as inflammation and angiogenesis. Previous studies have shown that Gal-3 is associated with atrial fibrosis, but the relationship between TGF-β1 and Gal-3 in atrial fibrosis remains unclear.

OBJECTIVE

To determine whether Gal-3 induces atrial fibrosis and atrial fibrillation by activating the TGF-β1/Smad pathway and whether the expression of Gal-3 is mediated by TGF-β1, which can enable assessing the relationship between Gal-3 and TGF-β1 in atrial fibrosis.

METHODS

In this study, 30 patients' right atrial appendages were collected and divided into 3 groups: congenital heart disease sinus rhythm group (n = 10, as a control group), rheumatic heart disease sinus rhythm group (n = 10), and rheumatic heart disease atrial fibrillation group (n = 10). Rat atrial fibroblasts were cultured in vitro, and recombinant Gal-3 and recombinant TGF-β1 proteins were added to the cell culture. The expression of Gal-3, TGF-β1, Smad2, and collagen I was detected by Western blotting and quantitative real-time PCR. Atrial tissues were stained with Masson's trichrome stain to evaluate the extent of atrial fibrosis. The expression of Gal-3 and TGF-β1 was detected by immunohistochemical staining and immunofluorescence staining. Gal-3 and TGF-β1 interaction was demonstrated by immunoprecipitation.

RESULTS

The expression levels of Gal-3, TGF-β1, Smad2, and collagen I were elevated in the rheumatic heart disease atrial fibrillation group compared with the congenital heart disease sinus rhythm group and the rheumatic heart disease sinus rhythm group. In cultured atrial fibroblasts, there is a synergistic interaction between Gal-3 and TGF-β1. Gal-3 stimulated the TGF-β1/Smad pathway, and overexpression of TGF-β1 induced Gal-3 expression.

CONCLUSIONS

Gal-3 and TGF-β1 interact with each other and stimulate the downstream TGF-β1/Smad pathway. This finding suggests that Gal-3 could be an important factor in TGF-β1-induced fibrosis in atrial fibrillation.

Galectin-3 as a Next-Generation Biomarker for Detecting Early Stage of Various Diseases

Galectin-3 is a β-galactoside-binding lectin which is important in numerous biological activities in various organs, including cell proliferation, apoptotic regulation, inflammation, fibrosis, and host defense. Galectin-3 is predominantly located in the cytoplasm and expressed on the cell surface, and then often secreted into biological fluids, like serum and urine. It is also released from injured cells and inflammatory cells under various pathological conditions. Many studies have revealed that galectin-3 plays an important role as a diagnostic or prognostic biomarker for certain types of heart disease, kidney disease, viral infection, autoimmune disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and tumor formation. In particular, it has been recognized that galectin-3 is extremely useful for detecting many of these diseases in their early stages. The purpose of this article is to review and summarize the recent literature focusing on the biomarker characteristics and long-term outcome predictions of galectin-3, in not only patients with various types of diseases, but associated animal models.

Serum Galectin-3 level and recurrence of atrial fibrillation post-ablation - Systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Serum galectin-3, a circulating biomarker of fibrosis, has been associated with atrial remodelling. Recent studies investigating serum galectin-3 and AF recurrence post-ablation have shown mixed results. We aimed to analyze the latest evidence on the association between serum galectin-3 and AF recurrence after catheter ablation.

METHODS

We performed a comprehensive search on topics that assesses serum galectin-3 and AF recurrence post-ablation up until August 2019.

RESULTS

There were 597 patients from seven studies. The mean difference of serum galectin-3 was similar in both AF recurrence and non AF recurrence group (mean difference 0.78 ng/mL [-0.56, 2.13]; p = 0.25; I2: 69%. Upon removal of a study in sensitivity analysis, the serum galectin-3 became higher in AF recurrence group (mean difference 1.41 ng/mL [0.47, 2.34], p = 0.003; I2: 17%). Serum galectin-3 was associated with a higher risk for AF recurrence (HR 1.25 [1.01, 1.55]; p = 0.04; I2: 76%). Upon removal of a study in sensitivity analysis, HR became 1.45 [1.07, 1.96], p = 0.02; I2: 47%. Meta-analysis of adjusted HR demonstrated that high serum galectin-3 independently predicts AF recurrence (HR 1.15 [1.02, 1.29], p < 0.02; I2: 57%, p = 0.10) CONCLUSION: Serum galectin-3 is associated with an increased risk of AF recurrence post-ablation. Further studies are required, especially emphasis on the cut-off point should be given, before integrating it in routine risk stratification for AF ablation.

Circulating Galectin-3 and Atrial Fibrillation Recurrence after Catheter Ablation: A Meta-Analysis

BACKGROUND

Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is involved in fibrosis and heart failure. However, epidemiological studies evaluating the association between Gal-3 and atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence after catheter ablation showed inconsistent results. We conducted a meta-analysis to comprehensively evaluate the relationship between baseline circulating Gal-3 levels and AF recurrence in patients undergoing catheter ablation.

METHODS

Relevant studies were identified by systematically searching the PubMed and Embase databases. A random-effect model was used to synthesize the results. Sensitivity analyses, performed by omitting one study at a time, were used to evaluate the robustness of the results.

RESULTS

Seven prospective cohort studies including 645 AF patients were included. Within a follow-up duration of up to 18 months, 244 patients developed AF recurrence. Pooled results showed that baseline circulating Gal-3 levels were significantly higher in patients with AF recurrence compared to those without (standardized mean difference: 0.74; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.21 - 1.27; p = 0.007; I2 = 89%). Moreover, higher baseline Gal-3 levels were independently associated with a significantly higher risk of AF recurrence after catheter ablation (risk ratio: 1.17 per unit of Gal-3; 95% CI: 1.01 - 1.35; p = 0.03; I2 = 40%), which was independent of age, gender, and left atrial dimension. Sensitivity analyses did not significantly affect the results. However, there was a significant publication bias for predicting efficacy of associating preprocedural Gal-3 levels with AF recurrence.

CONCLUSIONS

Higher preprocedural Gal-3 levels may be associated with increased risk of AF recurrence in patients undergoing catheter ablation.
