Does mindfulness training modulate the influence of spatial attention on the processing of intracutaneous electrical stimuli?

The impact of safety attitude on hazard identification and risk analysis: evidence from event-related potentials

A questionnaire survey and an event-related potential (ERP) experiment were used to reveal the impact of safety attitudes on risk perception. The results revealed that during hazard identification, the N130 amplitude of subjects with negative safety attitude was significantly higher, which implied that subjects with negative safety attitude were more likely to feel confused. During risk analysis, subjects with positive safety attitude were more inclined to overestimate the probability and damage degree of risks; subjects with positive safety attitudes displayed higher P150 and late positive potential amplitudes, which indicated that subjects with positive safety attitudes devoted more attention to risks in the early stage of risk analysis and had a more intense affective response in the later period. The risk judgment ability of subjects with positive safety attitude was affected by time pressure, and they exhibited higher risk judgment accuracy only under no time pressure.

On the spread of spatial attention in touch: Evidence from Event-Related Brain potentials

To investigate the distribution of tactile spatial attention near the current attentional focus, participants were cued to attend to one of four body locations (hand or shoulder on the left or right side) to respond to infrequent tactile targets. In this Narrow attention task, effects of spatial attention on the ERPs elicited by tactile stimuli delivered to the hands were compared as a function of the distance from the attentional focus (Focus on the hand vs. Focus on the shoulder). When participants focused on the hand, attentional modulations of the sensory-specific P100 and N140 components were followed by the longer latency Nd component. Notably, when participants focused on the shoulder, they were unable to restrict their attentional resources to the cued location, as revealed by the presence of reliable attentional modulations at the hands. This effect of attention outside the attentional focus was delayed and reduced compared to that observed within the attentional focus, revealing the presence of an attentional gradient. In addition, to investigate whether the size of the attentional focus modulated the effects of tactile spatial attention on somatosensory processing, participants also completed the Broad attention task, in which they were cued to attend to two locations (both the hand and the shoulder) on the left or right side. Attentional modulations at the hands emerged later and were reduced in the Broad compared to the Narrow attention task, suggesting reduced attentional resources for a wider attentional focus.

A Critical Analysis on Characterizing the Meditation Experience Through the Electroencephalogram

Meditation practices, originated from ancient traditions, have increasingly received attention due to their potential benefits to mental and physical health. The scientific community invests efforts into scrutinizing and quantifying the effects of these practices, especially on the brain. There are methodological challenges in describing the neural correlates of the subjective experience of meditation. We noticed, however, that technical considerations on signal processing also don't follow standardized approaches, which may hinder generalizations. Therefore, in this article, we discuss the usage of the electroencephalogram (EEG) as a tool to study meditation experiences in healthy individuals. We describe the main EEG signal processing techniques and how they have been translated to the meditation field until April 2020. Moreover, we examine in detail the limitations/assumptions of these techniques and highlight some good practices, further discussing how technical specifications may impact the interpretation of the outcomes. By shedding light on technical features, this article contributes to more rigorous approaches to evaluate the construct of meditation.
