Patterns of Internet and smartphone use by parents of children with chronic kidney disease

Exploring how members of the public access and use health research and information: a scoping review

BACKGROUND

Making high-quality health and care information available to members of the general public is crucial to support populations with self-care and improve health outcomes. While attention has been paid to how the public accesses and uses health information generally (including personal records, commercial product information or reviews on healthcare practitioners and organisations) and how practitioners and policy-makers access health research evidence, no overview exists of the way that the public accesses and uses high quality health and care information.

PURPOSE

This scoping review aimed to map research evidence on how the public accesses and uses a specific type of health information, namely health research and information that does not include personal, product and organisational information.

METHODS

Electronic database searches [CINAHL Plus, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Social Sciences Full Text, Web of Science and SCOPUS] for English language studies of any research design published between 2010-2022 on the public's access and use of health research or information (as defined above). Data extraction and analysis was informed by the Joanna Briggs Institute protocol for scoping reviews, and reported in accordance with the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews.

RESULTS

The search identified 4410 records. Following screening of 234 full text studies, 130 studies were included. One-hundred-and-twenty-nine studies reported on the public's sources of health-research or information; 56 reported the reasons for accessing health research or information and 14 reported on the use of this research and information. The scoping exercise identified a substantial literature on the broader concept of 'health information' but a lack of reporting of the general public's access to and use of health research. It found that 'traditional' sources of information are still relevant alongside newer sources; knowledge of barriers to accessing information focused on personal barriers and on independent searching, while less attention had been paid to barriers to access through other people and settings, people's lived experiences, and the cultural knowledge required.

CONCLUSIONS

The review identified areas where future primary and secondary research would enhance current understanding of how the public accesses and utilises health research or information, and contribute to emerging areas of research.

Internet search patterns for psychoactive substance use prevention and treatment in Mexico: A cross-sectional study

Objectives

This study was aimed at describing the patterns of searches for information on the prevention and treatment of psychoactive drug use in Mexico, among both the general population and the personnel dedicated to the prevention and treatment of this type of substance use in Mexico.

Methods

An exploratory cross-sectional quantitative study was performed with a validated online questionnaire to collect sociodemographic information, background information and self-reported internet search patterns on psychoactive substance use prevention. A chi-square test was used to identify differences between groups, and a classification tree was used to analyze the search patterns. The combinations of the search criteria with the search topics were entered into Google Trends to validate the information.

Results

The participants (n = 544 adults) were mostly women (65%), 18-30 years of age and bachelor's degree holders (57%). A total of 32% were students, 59% searched the Internet for drug use prevention or treatment, and 12% professionally engaged in drug use prevention or treatment.

Conclusions

Statistically significant differences were found between the general population and professionals dedicated to drug dependency services. We identified six search patterns used in the decision-making process by people seeking information on drug prevention and treatment on the Internet. These patterns were graphically visualized with a classification tree, although, this method did not allow clear differentiation of patterns between groups. The search patterns were successfully validated with Google trends.

Using a think-aloud methodology to understand online physical activity information search experiences and preferences of parents of children and youth with disabilities

BACKGROUND

The Internet is a preferred source of physical activity (PA) information. However, limited research exists regarding the experiences of parents of children and youth with disabilities (CYWD) in searching for PA programme information online. This research examined the experiences and preferences of parents of CYWD in searching for PA programme information online.

METHOD

Parents of CYWD (n = 10) participated in a think-aloud exercise while searching for PA programme information online. Following the think-aloud exercise, semi-structured interviews were used to further understand parents' experiences and preferences in searching for PA programme information online.

RESULTS

Parents identified key features that contributed to a positive online search experience. Additionally, parents noted challenges and resulting negative affect that was experienced.

CONCLUSIONS

This research can inform the development and dissemination of online PA programme information that is accessible and relevant to the preferences of parents of CYWD and can facilitate positive search experiences.

Smartphone apps on burns first aid: A review of the advice

AIMS

Many websites giving first aid advice are disappointingly inaccurate and at times dangerous in regard to burn injuries. With more patients relying on their smart phones to obtain online information the aim of this study was to compare first aid applications (apps) burn advice against those guidelines set by the British Burns Association (BBA).

METHOD

A content analysis of all freely available English written first aid apps from Google Play and the Apple Store was performed. The information was compared against BBA guidance which was split into 12 domains and scored appropriately.

RESULTS

61 of the 103 first aid apps included in the study, had information on the treatment of burn injuries. The mean score for all apps was 3.3 out of 12. 85% of apps postulated the need to cool the burn. However, only 11% of apps stipulated the need for 20min of cooling, while 3% suggested the burn can be cooled up to 3h post injury. Disappointingly even apps produced by reputable first aid charities scored poorly.

CONCLUSION

Burns first aid is documented as being poorly given in the community. With easy access to the internet and specifically smart device apps, more needs to be done to improve burn first aid information online.
