Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the major cause of chronic liver disease worldwide, with no universally recognized effective treatments currently available. In recent years, ginseng and its principal active components, such as ginsenosides, have shown potential protective effects in the treatment of these liver diseases. In NAFLD, studies have demonstrated that ginseng can improve hepatic lipid metabolism, reduce inflammatory responses, and inhibit oxidative stress and fibrosis, thereby attenuating the progression of NAFLD. Additionally, ginseng inhibits oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals and enhancing antioxidant enzyme activities, and it can impede fibrosis by interfering with the fibrotic signaling pathways. These combined effects contribute to attenuating the progression of NAFLD. These findings highlight the promise of ginseng as a potential therapeutic candidate for the treatment of NAFLD. However, despite the significant efficacy of ginseng in human NAFLD treatment, the number and quality of clinical studies remain limited, with a lack of large-scale, multicenter clinical trials to confirm these effects. Moreover, the pharmacokinetic properties of different ginsenosides, optimal therapeutic dosages, and the safety of long-term use require further investigation. This review summarizes the existing evidence on the mechanisms of action of ginseng and its active components in human NAFLD, assesses their potential as therapeutic options, and proposes future research directions to provide stronger scientific support for clinical application. Additionally, we performed a network pharmacology analysis of ginseng in relation to NAFLD to identify and investigate potential targets of ginseng in the treatment of NAFLD. This analysis aims to provide a theoretical foundation for the development of ginseng -based drugs for combating NAFLD.

Abstract
Aging is a complex process that involves many physiological mechanisms that gradually impair normal cellular and tissue function and make us more susceptible to diseases and death. It is influenced by intrinsic factors like cellular function and extrinsic factors like pollution and UV radiation. Recent scientific studies show that traditional plant-based foods and supplements can help mitigate the effects of aging. Nutraceuticals, which are dietary supplements with medicinal properties, have gained attention for their ability to prevent chronic and age-related diseases. Antioxidants like flavonoids, carotenoids, ascorbic acid, terpenes, tannins, saponins, alkaloids, minerals, etc. found in plants are key to managing oxidative stress, which is a major cause of aging. Well-known plant-based supplements from Bacopa monnieri, Curcuma longa, Emblica officinalis, Ginkgo biloba, Glycyrrhiza glabra, and Panax ginseng have been found to possess medicinal properties. These supplements have been shown to improve cognitive function, reduce oxidative stress, improve overall health, and potentially extend life and enhance the excellence of life. The obtained benefits from these plant species are due to the presence of their bioactive secondary metabolites, such as bacosides in Bacopa monnieri, curcumin in Curcuma longa, ginsenosides in Panax ginseng, and many more. These compounds not only protect against free radical damage but also modulate key biological pathways of aging. Also, traditional fermented foods (tempeh and kimchi), which are rich in probiotics and bioactive compounds, support gut health, boost immune function, and have anti-aging properties. The molecular mechanisms behind these benefits are the activation of nutrient-sensing pathways like AMPK, SIRT/NAD+, and mTOR, which are important for cellular homeostasis and longevity. This review shows the potential of traditional plant-based foods and dietary supplements for healthy aging, and more studies are needed to prove their efficacy and safety in humans. Incorporating these natural products into our diet may be a practical and effective way to counteract the effects of aging and overall well-being. The foremost goal of this review is to emphasize the importance of supporting the body's antioxidant system by consuming the right balance of natural ingredients in the diet.

Abstract
The application of organic fertilisers and biochar has become widespread in agroforestry ecosystems to enhance the yield and quality of crops and medicinal plants. However, their specific impact on both the yield and quality of Paris polyphylla (P. polyphylla), along with the underlying mechanisms, remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the distinct effects of organic fertiliser (at concentrations of 5% and 10%) and biochar application (at levels of 2% and 4%) on P. polyphylla saponin content. This content is intricately regulated by available soil nutrients, enzyme activities, and microbial community compositions and activities. Our results clearly demonstrated a significant increase in the saponin content, including total saponin, polyphyllin I (PPI), polyphyllin II (PPII), polyphyllin VI (PPVI), and polyphyllin VII (PPVII), in P. polyphylla following the application of both biochar and organic fertiliser. Moreover, in comparison to the control group, the addition of biochar and organic fertiliser led to a considerable rise in the activity of glycosyltransferase enzyme (GTS) and cycloartenol synthase (CAS) in P. polyphylla. Additionally, it increased soil available potassium (AK) and soil organic matter (SOM) concentration, along with the activity of urease, acid phosphatase, and catalase, although biochar amendment resulted in a decrease in nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) concentration. Crucially, our findings revealed a positive correlation between total saponin content and the activity of CAS in P. polyphylla, soil AK, SOM concentration, and the activities of urease, acid phosphatase, and catalase. Conversely, there was a negative correlation with NO3--N content. Furthermore, the application of organic fertiliser and biochar significantly influenced microbial community structures and specific microbial taxa. Notably, total saponin content exhibited a positive relationship with the relative abundances of Dehalococcoidia, Saccharomycetes, and Agaricomycetes taxa while showing a negative correlation with the abundance of Verrucomicrobiae. In conclusion, the observed increase in saponin content can be attributed to the modulation of specific microbial taxa in soils, as well as alterations in soil nutrients and enzyme activities resulting from the application of biochar and organic fertiliser. This study identifies a potential mechanism for enhancing saponin content in the artificial cultivation of P. polyphylla.

Abstract
In East Asia, Panax ginseng is one of the most important medicinal plants and has been used in traditional medicines from ancient times. Today, P. ginseng is cultivated in Korea, China, and Japan. Although the genetic diversity of P. ginseng in Korea and China has been reported previously, that of P. ginseng cultivated in Japan is largely unknown. In the present study, genetic diversity of P. ginseng cultivated in Japan was analyzed using eight simple sequence repeat markers that have been used in other studies, and the results were compared with previous results for Korea and China. The correlation between genetic diversity and plant characteristics, such as ginsenoside contents, were also examined. The genetic diversity of P. ginseng in Japan was substantially different from that in Korea and China, probably due to Japan's history of cultivation and the ginseng reproduction system of agamospermy. The genetic analysis indicated that P. ginseng cultivated in Japan could be classified into two clusters. The classification was related to the contents of ginsenosides Re and Ro in the main root but not to the cultivation region of the samples. These results may be useful for the cultivation and quality control of P. ginseng in Japan.

Abstract
Both the biosynthesis and array of bioactive and medicinal compounds in plants can be influenced by interactions with endophytic and exogenous fungi. However, the composition of endophytic and exogenous fungal communities associated with many medicinal plants is unknown, and the mechanism by which these fungi stimulate the secondary metabolism of host plants is unclear. In this study, we conducted a correlative analysis between endophytic and exogenous fungi and dendrobine and biomass accumulation in Dendrobium nobile across five Chinese habitats: wild Danxia rock, greenhouse-associated large Danxia stone, broken Danxia stone, broken coarse sandstone, and wood spile. Across habitats, fungal communities exhibited significant differences. The abundances of Phyllosticta, Trichoderma, and Hydropus were higher in wild habitats than in greenhouse habitats. Wild habitats were host to a higher diversity and richness of exogenous fungi than were greenhouse habitats. However, there was no significant difference in endophytic fungal diversity between habitats. The differences between the fungal communities' effects on the dendrobine content and biomass of D. nobile were attributable to the composition of endophytic and exogenous fungi. Exogenous fungi had a greater impact than endophytic fungi on the accumulation of fresh weight (FW) and dendrobine in D. nobile. Furthermore, D. nobile samples with higher exogenous fungal richness and diversity exhibited higher dendrobine content and FW. Phyllosticta was the only genus to be significantly positively correlated with both FW and dendrobine content. A total of 86 strains of endophytic fungi were isolated from the roots, stems, and leaves of D. nobile, of which 8 strains were found to be symbiotic with D. nobile tissue-cultured seedlings. The strain DN14 (Phyllosticta fallopiae) was found to promote not only biomass accumulation (11.44%) but also dendrobine content (33.80%) in D. nobile tissue-cultured seedlings. The results of this study will aid in the development of strategies to increase the production of dendrobine in D. nobile. This work could also facilitate the screening of beneficial endophytic and exogenous fungal probiotics for use as biofertilizers in D. nobile.

Abstract
Ginseng has been well-known as a medicinal plant for thousands of years. Bacterial endophytes ubiquitously colonize the inside tissues of ginseng without any disease symptoms. The identification of bacterial endophytes is conducted through either the internal transcribed spacer region combined with ribosomal sequences or metagenomics. Bacterial endophyte communities differ in their diversity and composition profile, depending on the geographical location, cultivation condition, and tissue, age, and species of ginseng. Bacterial endophytes have a significant effect on the growth of ginseng through indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and siderophore production, phosphate solubilization, and nitrogen fixation. Moreover, bacterial endophytes can protect ginseng by acting as biocontrol agents. Interestingly, bacterial endophytes isolated from Panax species have the potential to produce ginsenosides and bioactive metabolites, which can be used in the production of food and medicine. The ability of bacterial endophytes to transform major ginsenosides into minor ginsenosides using β-glucosidase is gaining increasing attention as a promising biotechnology. Recently, metabolic engineering has accelerated the possibilities for potential applications of bacterial endophytes in producing beneficial secondary metabolites.

Abstract
Bioactive compounds are comprised of small quantities of extra nutritional constituents providing both health benefits and enhanced nutritional value, based on their ability to modulate one or more metabolic processes. Plant-based diets are being thoroughly researched for their cardiovascular properties and effectiveness against cancer. Flavonoids, phytoestrogens, phenolic compounds, and carotenoids are some of the bioactive compounds that aim to work in prevention and treating the cardiovascular disease in a systemic manner, including hypertension, atherosclerosis, and heart failure. Their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties are the most important characteristics that make them favorable candidates for CVDs treatment. However, their low water solubility and stability results in low bioavailability, limited accessibility, and poor absorption. The oral delivery of bioactive compounds is constrained due to physiological barriers such as the pH, mucus layer, gastrointestinal enzymes, epithelium, etc. The present review aims to revise the main bioactive compounds with a significant role in CVDs in terms of preventive, diagnostic, and treatment measures. The advantages of nanoformulations and novel multifunctional nanomaterials development are described in order to overcome multiple obstacles, including the physiological ones, by summarizing the most recent preclinical data and clinical trials reported in the literature. Nanotechnologies will open a new window in the area of CVDs with the opportunity to achieve effective treatment, better prognosis, and less adverse effects on non-target tissues.

Abstract
Cancer incidence rate has been increasing drastically in recent years. One of the many cancer treatment methods is chemotherapy. Traditional medicine, in the form of complementary and alternative therapy, is actively used to treat cancer, and many herbs and active ingredients of such therapies are being intensely studied to integrate them into modern medicine. Ginseng is traditionally used as a nourishing tonic and for treating various diseases in Asian countries. The therapeutic potential of ginseng in modern medicine has been studied extensively; the main bioactive component of ginseng is ginsenosides, which have gathered attention, particularly for their prospects in the treatment of fatal diseases such as cancer. Ginsenosides displayed their anticancer and antimetastatic properties not only via restricting cancer cell proliferation, viability, invasion, and migration but also by promoting apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, and autophagy in several cancers, such as breast, brain, liver, gastric, and lung cancer. Additionally, ginsenosides can work synergistically with already existing cancer therapies. Thus, ginsenosides may be used alone or in combination with other pharmaceutical agents in new therapeutic strategies for cancer. To date however, there is little systematic summary available for the anticancer effects and therapeutic potential of ginsenosides. Therefore, we have reviewed and discussed all available literature in order to facilitate further research of ginsenosides in this manuscript.

Abstract
The peroxide produced in the lipid metabolic process attacks liver cells and causes liver injury. Ginsenosides have been shown to have anti-oxidation abilities and to mend myocardial damage. This study evaluated the effect of traditional ginseng essence (TEG) in preventing chemical liver damage induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Forty 8-week-old male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were divided into five groups: control, liver injury (CCl4), and TEG by oral gavage at 0.074, 0.149, or 0.298 g/kg/day for nine weeks. Liver injury biochemical indicators, antioxidant enzyme activity, and lipid contents in liver tissues were evaluated. The liver appearance was observed, and histopathological tests were conducted to estimate whether TEG-antagonized oxidants further ameliorated liver injury. The results show that, after supplementation of TEG for nine consecutive weeks and CCl4—induced liver injury for eight weeks, the levels of liver injury biochemical indicators in animal serum decreased significantly, and, in liver tissue, antioxidant activity was significantly improved and accumulation of lipids was decreased. Pathological sections exhibited reduced liver lipid accumulation and fibrosis. As discussed above, TEG can increase the antioxidant capacity in the liver and the maintenance of hepatocyte function, protecting the liver from chemical injury and improving healthcare.

Ageing is an enigmatic and progressive biological process which undermines the normal functions of living organisms with time. Ageing has been conspicuously linked to dietary habits, whereby dietary restrictions and antioxidants play a substantial role in slowing the ageing process. Oxygen is an essential molecule that sustains human life on earth and is involved in the synthesis of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that pose certain health complications. The ROS are believed to be a significant factor in the progression of ageing. A robust lifestyle and healthy food, containing dietary antioxidants, are essential for improving the overall livelihood and decelerating the ageing process. Dietary antioxidants such as adaptogens, anthocyanins, vitamins A/D/C/E and isoflavones slow the ageing phenomena by reducing ROS production in the cells, thereby improving the life span of living organisms. This review highlights the manifestations of ageing, theories associated with ageing and the importance of diet management in ageing. It also discusses the available functional foods as well as nutraceuticals with anti-ageing potential.
